Steve,
Hi, I was catching up on my mail and I saw your post, stating that it
would be your last. I hope this will reach you.
I don't know about the rest of the newbies, but I for one will miss your
posts. You were extremely helpful, always well informed, and yes even pretty
patient. You've helped me to make the transition from Windows to Linux
without too much hair-pulling. Although I haven't thrown Windows out the
window, I'm able to experiment with Linux and actually relax and enjoy
myself.

Enjoy your time off
Thanks again, you've been a big help.

[newbie] Installation difficulties

2000-03-04 Thread Ratsnake

OK, after admitting that I was quite proficient at
installing Red Hat Linux, and after becoming very
disilussioned with Red Hat (i.e., the Linux version of
Microsoft), I purchased the Mandrake distribution v. 7.0.
Now, my hard disk has already been partitioned into 4
separate compartments, as I was running Windows 98 and
Windows NT. However, I wiped my "C" hard disk in order to
uninstall NT. Now, after attempting to install the Mandrake
Linux, I came to a dead end. Admittedly, my hard disk is
still partitoned, in other words, I only wiped the "C"
drive. I attempted to install the Mandrake Linux, and after
re-booting, nothing happened, and the box automatically went
into the Windows 98 O/S. Any ideas, suggestions, etc.?
What do I need to do to install the Mandrake Linux O/S? Any
help would be accepted.
Regards,
Bob

Re: [newbie] Install prob.

2000-03-04 Thread Ratsnake

Dave,
I just don't get it. Why in hell is any distribution of
Linux so damn difficult to install? I am very familiar with
Red Hat installation, but this Mandrake Linux distribution,
(which, after reading all the reviews, was a basic cake-walk
to install), was virtually IMPOSSIBLE to install on my
computer. I gave up. I went to Mandrake because I felt
that Red Hat was basically the "Microsoft" of Linux, but,
after all their "claims of easy installation", I am very
disappointed.

Bob

[newbie] Mandrake with Wu-Ftp Problems

2000-03-04 Thread maxtorator

I finally got my FTP server up and running (partially). I read through all of
the docs and man pages and faqs that I could find but I am still having
problems with it.
I can connect to it but I cant see any files that I have on there. I dont see
any directories that I have made. I mean, I can change to different
directories by typing the path (using GFTP) but nothing shows up. Any ideas?
I have my password file and group file, ls, and everything (I think) is in its
proper place but still no go. My message doesnt even show on login. All help
would be much appreciated.

[newbie] Install prob.

2000-03-04 Thread Dave Casper

How's this for bad luck: I bought Lin-Man 7.0 Complete
in the hopes of learning Linux. I couldn't install at
home though because my floppy drive died. So I decided
to install it at work [we're a strictly doz shop so
don't tell anyone ;) ] to get started right away.
Installed and works fine there. Get the new floppy
drive at home and try the install; won't go. I fixed
what I thought to be a hardware conflict but now I am
getting the following errors:
   in second stage install
Segmentation fault
_x11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
_x11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
Gtk-warning: cannot open display: 0 at
/usr/bin/perl-install/my_gtk.pm line 139
install exited abnormally.

This error output shows up shortly after a screen
initializing the CD-Rom.

Do you have ANY ideas of what's causing this?

FYI.
Equipment I'm using:
P133 - 32Mb
ATI Xpert98 (3D Rage Pro) - PCI
US-Robotics int 33.6 modem (com 2)
I have a multi-funct card that gives me com1. The
motherboard has onboard IO disabled in BIOS because of
problems.

I haven't had any problems with my win and linux boxes and seeing
drives. Just use samba on the linux box. Be SURE that when you set it
up that you have them in the same workgroup. Type everything in lower
case in samba when you configure it, even though it's in caps in
windows. I haven't tried to setup specific users on windows or linux to
see specific things or have special logins. When you connect from a win
box to linux you'll be asked for a password. This is NOT root (ever?).
It will put you into whatever that user can see and how you setup what
is browsable etc in samba. Eventually, I'll want specific users too,
but this should give you a start.

[newbie] Cd-rom trouble upon install

2000-03-04 Thread Trevor Stewart

Hi,
I'm rather new to linux (all I have done is used other systems, and
installed it on a few computers). I have an old 486 box kicking around
and I want to install Mandrake 6.0 on it (I've installed it no problem
before, just not on this box).
The trouble is when I try to install it, the installation cannot find
the cd-rom.
First of all the cd-rom is a panasonic compatible drive (nscd-2x-p)
which plugs into my SB compatible Zoltrix 1600 sound card.
During the install I'm given the choice to choose my type of cd-rom, I
choose the non-scsi route and then select soundblaster/panasonic for
cd-rom. Autoprobe fails to find it. I have tried to do it manually
with sbpcd=0x220,7,1 but it hasn't worked (maybe I'm doing something
wrong here)
Any ideas?

thanks,

Re: [newbie] General Help: Mounting devices & Modem Trouble

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I checked that file. Here is what it says:
   hda: IBM-DHEA-38451, ATA DISK drive
hdb: Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer Plus 8100, ATAPI CDROM drive
   hdc: FX240S, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdd: IOMEGA ZIP 100 ATAPI, ATAPI FLOPPY drive

I was able to mount hdc as my /mnt/cdrom2, as well as my floppy. However,
when I try to mount hdb the same way as I did with hdc (mount -t iso9660
/dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom) I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb,
or too many mounted file systems

What might be causing this to run differently than the other drive?

Thanks a million,
William

type "mount /dev/hardware_device /a/directory" as root to mount something.
The CD-ROM would command would most likely be "mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom" for
you, and for floppys it's "mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy". As for the CDR, I've
seen several different hardware ID's for it, mine personally is sr0 but I"ve
seen stuff like hdc too. Look in /var/log/dmesg and see if you cant' spot in
there what Linux calls your CDR. And from your "input/output error", were you
trying to mount a music CD? Those don't mount under Linux, just use a CD-Player
app to play them, under "Multimedia" in both Gnome and KDE.

Is the JDK included in the distribution ?

And if I download a JDK from Blackdown, how can I

If so, then you need Samba for Windows Networkin'.

I doubt that this will help you now but maybe for the next time,

I had a similar situation where my partition table became trash by my
own hand *-(

Although the windows data was still in place I could not even
access to the drive...it was unbootable

The thing that saved me and resurrected the MS system without
damage was a stroke of pure luck...some weeks before I had been
playing with a FIPS disk..(just looking) and I booted to that and
looked at my partition table.it suggested that I make a backup
restore file of the original table, so I didI didn't use the FIPS
for any of it's other functions but I still had the disc.

Much later I dummied up the table...I could not gain entry
with FDISK on the Packard Bell restore disc or any other thing I
tried...remembering the restore file I made with FIPS, I booted to
that and ran restore...Magically the MS windows reappeared. from there
I was able to install the Linux as normal..for a moment I had thought
my new 13Gig disk would be a paperweight

I did not ever use the other functions of FIPS but I will
always keep a copy with that partition table recovery filejust in
case

Ps..if someone is interested? FIPS 2.0 is on just about every Linux
distribution and also the linux websites, it is simple to extract it
to a Floppy...for those bad days it will be insurance. although I
doubt the author intended it for this use.

Also the really neat Linux system on a Floppy that can be used for
recovery, from Toms root boot...I have it on hand and have tested it
but have not had to recover with it as of yet

I thought this needed a new Subject. I suspect anything that cheap would be a Winmodem
which seem to be unuseable with Linux. Personally I find it =very= useful to have an
external modem where the lights tell me what's going on.

I have a USR Courier v.Everything that I bought back when I had a very low quality

[newbie] Problem Mounting Floppies

2000-03-04 Thread Dale Morris

When I try to mount floppies I made with Redhat 6.1, I get an error
message, "could not list directory contents, file/mnt/floppy.." what do I
need to do to -- "So many idiots.. get this working correctly. I'm amazed
that I can't mount a ext2 floppy. I so few comets.." edited the fstab as
follows: H Henry /dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda5 / ext2
defaults 1 1 /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/hda7 /home ext2
defaults 1 2 /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,ext2 dev=/dev/fd0
0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

(I added ext2 in fs=..)

I would like to be able to mount both linux and ms disks. How do I do
this?

Thanks

I don't how myip works as I use dyndns.org where updating your ip, via a web
page is pretty easy/painless. I never installed one of the auto update clients
(which all seem to be tars) and now have a static ip and don't need to update.

Not sure what/if you are asking about Apache. Once its installed its pretty
easy to setup from linuxconfig. For starters turn on indexes (heck you might
not even need to do that, I don't remember) and point your browser to
http://localhost or http://foo.myip.org/ (or however their naming scheme works)

[newbie] new to Mandrake 7.0

2000-03-04 Thread CMi1255179

Hello.
I was able to divide up my hard drive and install Mandrake 7.0 and have it
share some space with Windows '95...but I have
some questions.

1. I am new to Linux, and have used Windows for about two years...what is
the best way to go about and learn Linux? I bought the O'Reily book 'Running
Linux,' and it has helped, but
it is very advanced in some parts, and I was looking for something online to
help me.

2. Also trying to get my Epson 600 printer and Iomega 250 zip drive to
work...went to their sites and didn't see like a Linux driver for them...I
though that is probably what they would need...am I right here?

thanks,

I use ISA modems and have no problems. They need to have dip switches and
jumpers. You disable the Plug and Pray and I've set mine to COM 4 IRQ 3.

I can't comment on your prices as I'm in the UK

Pardon me for asking, but is there a space after the "cd" you typed?

I think the fix is to delete (or better just rename) the $home/.kde.share

Hi Bill,
If windows tells you your modem is on COM3, you need to use ttyS2 in kppp.
However, you may have to run setserial (as root) to get that port (I'm not
sure, but I think only the first two exist by default). Also check the other
ttySx ports just to be certain. These might also be a resource conflict with
the touchpad on serial port 1.
Not sure about the sound problem, but I'm sure someone else will chime in
who's far more knowledgeable :o)

Read very carefully man mount and man fstab.

If during installation you had any file /etc/fstab automatically created,
then change the lines caontaining the supermount feature, which apparently
gives more troubles thens advantages, and repalce it with a classic fstab
entri (not without having saved first /etc/fstab in case your changes were
disastrous).

Supposing that one of your cdrom was /dev/hdd and that you had a directory
/mnt/cdrom, the corresponding line in /etc/fstab could be:

/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom auto user,noauto,nosuid,exec,nodev,rw 0 0

[newbie] SCSI devices not recognized

2000-03-04 Thread Claus Atzenbeck

I am using Madrake 7.0 and it is working well. I have a SCSI CD-ROM
writer and a SCSI ZIP drive.

Mandrake used to recognize the CD writer correctly. I was using kernel
vmlinuz-2.2.14-1mdklinus. I was able to mount CDs on /dev/scd0.
With kernel vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdk mounting CDs on SCSI was not
possible.

Then I was installing vmware on kernel vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdk. After
that, even on vmlinuz-2.2.14-1mdklinus I was not able to mount
/dev/scd0 again. Also mounting my ZIP is not possible. This it was
Linux tells me:

[claus@tiger /dev]$ mount /mnt/zip
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/zip as a block device
   (maybe `insmod driver'?)

On startup kudzu was telling me that the CD-ROM writer and the ZIP
drive was removed, which is (I'm sure) not true. Even the computer
recognizes both devices on startup.

The mysterious thing is that both devices were recognized correctlly
when installing the system and it used to work...

PLEASE, GIVE ME SOME HELP...

I have that combination on a HP at work and the modem is a winmodem and the
sound card is piggybacked on to it. Will probably not work under linux but 1)
I haven't tried too hard and 2) I'd like someone to prove me wrong

Thanks for a lot of good advice, Piero. I lucked out this time in that someone
recognized my symptoms as having been caused by my changing the host name. Postfix
couldn't deal with it and was hanging. I removed postfix from the boot process, since
I don't need it.

Was it not installed, or will it just not run? Look in /usr/local/WordPerfect/wpbin
and see if it's there. If it is, then get in that directory in a terminal window and
execute "./wpbin". If it works, then you can work out the issue of how to execute it
normally, depending on the window manager you're using.

If it's not there, then you really do have a bad install and I don't have a ready fix
in mind.

Well??? fdisk will not see everything, and some weird things appear
sometimes like partitions that seem to be mirages etc. try a program called
Ranish Partition Manager which is fairly comprehensive BUT read the manuals
first!

Matthew,
What have you tried thus far? Have you run sndconfig? What was the result?
Have you tried kppp to set up your modem? If the modem is on COM1 in windows,
set it to ttyS0 in kppp. the query the modem and see what you get back. It
*might* be a winmodem, in which case it probably will never work and you'll
need an external.

Can you create a small (20mb) /boot partition that would be below 1024? That
should work if your first "other" OS partition is smaller than the first 8gb.
