If you can't ping the numbered address (192.168.etc) then it is not a Join the
Domain kind of problem. It is a configuration problem with the NIC. You say
other computers so I am assuming that you have checked the "other computers"
against each other (Including the new NT install) and that they will ping and
answer each other. To me this means to check the linux box.

Pinging an address (not a name) has nothing to do with M$ Workgroups or Domains.

Been Here, Done this... Loop caused by bad configuration file and you
are locked into starting X.
X won't run, /etc/inittab has set to respawn, you go in circles.

At the lilo prompt

linux init 3

then it should dump you at a console.

run Xconfigurator

or

XF86Setup

or

xf86config

once you have a good /etc/X11/XF86Config

startx

to test.

If it's good reboot and you will be back to normal

Get it working once and cp /etc/X11/XF86Config to ~

One of the oh so helpful fixits like linuxconf is probably changing it
back. Had lots of problems with linuxconf changing my settings to what it
thought was right. So annoying I finally disabled it. If you have a copy
of XF86Config in $HOME it will take precedence over the one in /etc/X11

Greetings all,

I wrote once before of the problems I'm having with this blasted mouse.
Everything I change in my centrally located /etc/X11/XF86Config file
seems to take. I just got done swapping my 75dpi and 100dpi fonts around
and they work like a charm..

However, FOR SOME REASON, my mouse WILL NOT stay configured.. After I
"startx" it's not working. If I run "XF86Setup" in a "konsole" and
configure my mouse and hit apply it starts working. But it WILL NOT stay
configured..

I've tried as root and user.. I've changed permissions, write and read
access, hand editing and other not so wise things.. PLEASE HELP.. this
is driving me MAD.. BTW, on previous installs of this EXACT same ISO (
mandrake v7.0 ) I've configured it to work fine.. Accck! I

Same old story from the tech guys, that is their excuss for "they have no
idea what they are doing".

Do you have linux installed already?? If you get linux installed and your
network card setup properly the rest is cake.

You need to find you if you are using static IP addressing or DHCP, find
this out from tech support if you don't know.

Get the info for gateway, DNS, your IP (if it is static), smtp mail server,
pop mail server, etc.

Ready to start when you are :)

I have @Home & had to call them for the settings (They will tell you that
they do not provide support for Linux, but they will give you alot of
help.). I could not get Linux to recognize my ISA Ethernet card, so I
bought a PCI card. It took a while to get the settings to work right, but
with the help of @Home's Techies I finally got it right. One piece of
advice... if you are going to use Netscape for E-mail, you will need the
full name of your mail server instead of just using "mail" as you would
under Win98. (Mine is "mail.catv1.md.home.com") You can get this info from
@Home also.

never done it this way  but your image source in this

Rondid you include the path info to the image file (ie.

OK...my Windows box uses DHCP to renew the lease. I have a static IP and DHCP
is not needed ot required, to update a static number...hence the _STATIC_. As
far as my Linux box is concerned I am only a 24.112.blah.blah number on the
Roger's network, same as a 192.168... on a private network. The leases for
the IP is just a technicality so they can enforce rules if they wish.

module. What do I need to do? Any help appreciated.

I'm running this card in my two linux machines. One is running under Mandrake
7.02 and the other under RH 6.1. Have you run sndconfig as card was detected
automatically.

I am running Mandrake 6.1 and have been trying to make X work.
I run Xconfigurator, and I can select the correct monitor, then I get
a test screen, which works.

When I try to run X with startx, it halts at trying to create
an .Xauthority file.

If anyone has this monitor or/and this card, please copy/paste
your config here so I can use it.
Thanks!

2000-03-16 Thread KM Linux

Thanks...you were right. I found the ntfs.o in the fs modules. I loaded it with
insmod and it works fine. Strange problem though...although I can mount and read
the drive and execute some programs through wine...i still get a boot message
during startup that it can't mount the drive because of too many mounted file
systems.

Od that I should get the error and still be a ble to read the drive anyway. Any
thoughts?

write programs to it (less than 1.44MB) I get another message that says similar

RE: [newbie] Free ISP for Linux

Any ISP should be able to handle a Linux user as far as their hardware is
concerned. However getting tech support from them on doing it may be
another story. I would just get manual setting from any of the ones that
are available out there for free and set it up just like you have done with
your own.

I've had better luck with JPilot, for what it's worth. But they both

[newbie] GDM problem

2000-03-16 Thread leftos K

Hello
I've just installed Mandrake 7.0 and I have
encountered a problem with gdm.
When /etc/sysconfig/desktop contains the word GNOME
and I give `telinit 5`at any shell prompt a blue
screen appears and then it goes blanc again and then
the blue screen reappears. This happens again and
again and the only way to stop it is pressing Alt-F1
and immediately Alt-Ctrl-Del which causes a restart.
When using kdm (echo KDE >/etc/sysconf/desktop)
nothing of these happens. I've examined
/var/log/messages and no error appears in there. Also
there is no entry in /var/log/xdm-error.log and
~/.xsession-errors.
I've also verified the rpm package using rpm --verify
gdm and no error message appears.
I know one of your answers will be "just use kdm" but
I want to see how gdm looks (you could send me a
screenshot perhaps:)
I don't know what is wrong and I don't know where to
look for configuration errors. Need help.
Thanks
Bye

[newbie] mouse question

2000-03-16 Thread Charles Ulwelling

I have two very newbie mouse questions.

First, I like double clicking to launch stuff but it seems that Mandrake 7
defaults to a single click to lanuch apps. Could someone tell me how to
change that so I have to double click to launch apps.

Second, I have a microsoft intellimouse and the scroll wheel doesn't work
any ideas on how to enable that in Mandrake?

Re: [newbie] Setup Question

Ron,
The ISO is an image file.  ISO is short for
ISO-9660, which is the format for CDROMs.  Yes, the ISO file is a CDROM
image.  You will need to burn the image onto a CDR/CDRW disk.  If you
don't have a burner you will have to either have to redownload the installation
files, or try an FTP install.

If you have more questions just ask.

[newbie] Weird Networking Problem!!

2000-03-16 Thread Donny

Hey everyone!

OK, heres my weird story:

I have a home network, with windowz NT as a domain controller. I was
always able to get linux up and running on the network, using "linuxconf".
Well i had to re-install NT. This happened the day before my Mandrake 7
arrived in the mail. I get NT up and goin, and now I go to install Linux. I
set up the network stuff, and low and behold, no network!! I cant even ping
other computers, and they cant ping the linux box. So i figure, "Hey, it
must be Linux's fault", so i put redhat 6.1 on, and still get the same problem.

This has me sooo confused!! Is Linux or NT the problem??

Please help!!!

Thanks alot in advance!

[newbie] win-key quest and Netscape fonts quest.

2000-03-16 Thread YekSoon... Lok

Hi,

Under KDE, I can use the win-key to activate the 'menus'
but in GNOME-with-Englightenment, it can't.

is there anyway to achieve this (to use win-key)

and also the fonts size in my Netscape is very small
how can I change it bigger (much bigger)

also when I dial into my ISP to surf, I notice that
Netscape took a long (relatively) time before it finds the
homepage whereas on win98, it is almost instant.
what could be the problem...?

thanks

Same old story from the tech guys, that is their excuss for "they have no
idea what they are doing".

Do you have linux installed already?? If you get linux installed and your
network card setup properly the rest is cake.

You need to find you if you are using static IP addressing or DHCP, find
this out from tech support if you don't know.

Get the info for gateway, DNS, your IP (if it is static), smtp mail server,
pop mail server, etc.

Ready to start when you are :)

Re: [newbie] Mouse cursor is an opaque white square block

2000-03-16 Thread Denis Havlik

This is an common problem which can be healed by using the option
sw_cursor in XF86Config:

1) in /etc/inittab set initail runlevel to 3 and reboot
2) in /etc/X11/XF86Config, search for "Device" section, and
add "Option sw_cursor" (see "man XF86_SVGA" for details)
3) test by typing "startx"
4) if/when happy set initial runlevel back to 5

Yeah good point!! Every cable company has their own policies of static or

Take a look at /etc/lilo.conf

If it says something like ide=scsi, you have to access your IDE cdrom
(CDRW, more likely!) as if it were a scsi device. Probably /dev/scd0.

RE: [[newbie] Mandrake and @home cable]

2000-03-16 Thread Pittman, Merle

I am using roadrunner here. The way it works here is as follows:
 - if you are using the older Zenith modems, then you have a static Ip
 - if you are using the newer Toshiba modems you dhcp.

The newer modems are needed to allow port enabling (ie.. outside access) to
your computer.

It is not really a problem, I have DHCp but have has the same IP for several
months.

hi
I live in Toronto area too...i am Shaw@Home
@home uses dhcp, here is how to set that up in Mandrake
make sure you have dhcpcd installed, to make sure typewhich dhcpcd
run netcfg, goto interfaces tap, you should see eth0 if you don't see that

[newbie] Setup Question

2000-03-16 Thread Ronald Brown

Hi GroupBrand New Newbie here :) Please bare
with me

I have downloaded Mandrake ISO 7-02 onto my hard
drive. I'm a little confused on what to do next.

When in the installation process, I get the first
screen that request this information.

Select Partition

What partition and directory on that partition hold
the Mandrake/RPMS and Mandrake/base directories?

When I used winimage I selected the hd.image and
extracted the files to a 3 1/2 and the ISO download is
on my C:\ drive, what am I to
input?

Re: [newbie] zip in dos help

2000-03-16 Thread Tony

Never used zip disk however this may help in getting cdrom. Try and borrow a
win98 startup disk and boot from it with the option to use cdrom, the 98
disk carries generic cdrom drivers and may for all I know also carry zip
stuff, perhaps someone else would comment on this ??
"Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honeydew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of paradise." (The linux user)

Thats because Macmillian is only a reseller.
Macmillian takes mandrake and puts in their logo and stuff and sells it as
6.5
this is why some tend to buy the lMacmillian instead of the mandrake due to the
way they label the boxes in stores and computer magazine's...
I almost did the same thing until a friend pointed to me the fine print which
says Macmillian

You are using the Roger's@Home service in Ontario, so am I. I successfully
connect without using DHCP.
I just put all the correct info in...then it's done. All the DHCP does is
update the IP lease. My IP is static as your likely is.

I had a similar problem with a NIC. Here is what I did. I queried to see if
the module was installed: modprobe xx.x (I think emu10k1) and even
though it was trying to load it upon boot & lothar recognized it, it was not
installed. I next did insmod x.x. This installed the module. I rebooted

Dear Paul (aka FSB).

When you say it just goes into LILO (which is what it's supposed to do if you
have LILO on the boot sector of your linux partition) I suppose you mean that it
goes no further than this. In other words, it just shows you the LILO: prompt
and then sits there? I assume you can get to your linux partition from a boot
disk so I and others will want to see your /etc/lilo.conf file.

You should use dhcp if your ISP requires it. Check your settings for the
ethernet card in Win98. If the assign IP address automatically option is
selected, you should enable dhcp in Linux. If not, try setting Linux to match
what IP address is shown in win98.

Hope this helps,

Re: [newbie] installing linux and windows

2000-03-16 Thread Tony

Well of course what is crap to you is vital for another mans rose garden!
However look at Newbies Manual and Newbies Administrators Guide both of
which contain SIMPLE & UNDERSTANDABLE detailed instructions as to setting
up a Linux system, the instructions may not suit you personally but that
does not mean they are useless to someone starting out in Linux, once
started on the road it becomes progressively easier to make informed
choices, hopefully the intent of a newbies list is to make things easier for
total newbies who as they progress will move to expert and themselves
contribute to helping other newbies.
Anyway thats my philosophy and at 72 years old I am unlikely to change now,
the giving of advice is just that "GIVING". There is no onus on the
recipient to take or act upon it nor should the giver feel aggrieved if it
is not taken, it is simply put out there in the hopes it might be useful. I
remember starting out with Basic then CP/M then Dos and Windows and have
only in the last few months started to explore the fringes of Linux, however
it keeps me young and gives me some amusement sitting on my catamaran in the
Caribbean
"Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honeydew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of paradise." (The linux user)

[newbie] zip in dos help

2000-03-16 Thread Bill Kinsey

Hello all;
I have a question involving a zip drive and dos. My friend tried linux and
came to the conclusion that he didn't like it. He used the dreaded fdisk and
erased his whole hard drive. He has windows but its on a zip disk and he
doesn't know how to install a zip in dos. I know this isn't a linux question
but i'd greatly appreciate some help.

[newbie] Mandrake and @home cable

2000-03-16 Thread Roger Bird

I finally got linux to recognize my nic but I need help with configuring
it to access the cable modem. I have tried various settings in netcfg
and netconfig. Should I be running dhcp? Should I take out all the
settings and start from scratch?

The nic works fine on my win98 drive and accesses @home just fine.

HELP!!

boot up in text mode (type "linux 3" at lilo prompt) and then start X
manually (startx). Direct the output to a file, "startx >> output" and
check out this file to see what errors it reports.

Re: [newbie] CHOWN of FAT32 partition

2000-03-16 Thread a_hornby

If you have successfully mounted the partition, it
may be read only FAT32 support in the support in the kernel.
(ala WINNT NTFS support)
If so you have no option to change any attributes of the filesystem
-read only.
Check how FAT32 is supported in your kernel version.
Catch ya.

Let me guess...you have the Cyrix MX 200+ <-- notice the +
well the core MHz of the Cyrix is 75 X 2 = 150MHz
This is normal.
The CPU is internally overclocked so that the effective performance is 200
MHz.

[newbie] Re: Caution: Macmillan/Mandrake

2000-03-16 Thread Tony Alfrey

I posted the following message on the list several days ago and also sent same
to Linuxcare (the support service for the Macmillan Software version of
Mandrake). I've gotten no response from Linuxcare except the message-received
acknowledgement. In the meantime, I've installed RedHat 5.2, RedHat 6.1,
Turbolinux 6.0 and various Caldera distros on the same partition with no
problem. I would have tried a commercial version of Mandrake if I could find
one in the stores. I would recommend caution to those considering buying the
Macmillan Software versions of Mandrake. In my opinion, the Macmillan distro
is bad advertising for the full-blown Mandrake package!

Re: [newbie] booting up with BootMagic?

2000-03-16 Thread Alan Shoemaker

JonThe host partition doesn't have to be active for Boot
Magic to work. The Boot Magic configuration program has a check
box to enable/disable Boot Magic. It keeps a copy of whatever
original boot loader was on the mbr and when it's disabled it
writes over itself with the saved copy of the original boot
loader, when it's enabled then it writes its own bootloader to
the mbr.
