bryan.

I've been trying install the Secure Server Edition of Mandrake 7.0 (That's
the Macmillan Publishing version I bought at CompUSA).

The system I'm installing to is an Intergraph TD-4. It's a Dual Pentium 90
with 96MB RAM. It has NCR SCSI (I'm not sure what chipset). with a Toshiba
CD-ROM [ID4], a Conner 1.0GB [ID1], and a Micropolis 4.3GB [ID0]. It has a
built-in NIC, but I have no clue what it is... (I know, I really need to
take a closer look at the motherboard...)

Anyways, the problem with installing is actually the video card. Originally,
it had a Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM PCI. The install got all the way to the
last step, Configuring X.
It then spit out an error that said it couldn't find Server_S3. I replace
the vid card with a PCI Trident Chipset, and I also tried another with a PCI
Tseng Chipset. Both times, I resinstalled completely, and got to the same
spot at the end and got back that it couldn't find Server_SVGA.

Any ideas? Are these vid cards just so cheesey that they won't work or
something? I'm not to keen on digging up a higher-end PCI vid card for
something that is just bascially going to sit around and be a minor web
server for me

When you run into that problem with resolution, monitor, vid card and you
lose the screen - all black or the such; try using the

I had to do this with Opera and others.
First you may want to search the directory where you installed for a .xpm
file.
That, if there is one, may be the icon that isn't installed correctly. If you
find one click on it to view it in Icon Editor. If it looks good, move it to
/usr/share/icons and it will be available in your icon choices.

You can draw one with Icon Editor and save it in the mentioned folder.

Or what I do is find the apps icon in their docs or webpage. Take a screenshot
with Gimp, crop the icon out of it trying to get it roughly square, then
resize it to 32x32. Name it and save it to your /usr/share/icons and you're
done.
Just remember to give it an .xpm extension and make sure its 32x32.

Jay;

Try looking at the file "/var/log/dmesg". This tells you what linux
finds each time it starts. And what it assigns to your drives. Or
append a copy of it to an email and maybe someone on this list could
help you. My internal zip is a IDE but linux thinks it's a SCSI. So
instead of assigning it "hdd", it assigns it "sd0". Your mileage may
vary.

Here's the address for Netscape 4.72 128 bit browser:
ftp://sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake-crypto/RPMS/

You'll need both the 'common' and the 'communicator' files (navigator is
built into communicator), and remember that if you're in the United States
it is illegal (last I heard) to export 128 bit encryption If you're not

Here's an excellent howto for setting up kppp:

Make sure you replace the phone numbers and dns numbers with the ones for

[newbie] Getting more Icons for KDE

2000-03-29 Thread Murray Strome

I can add new applications to the KDE desktop OK. However, when I want to
select an Icon for it, I am given a choice (I don't know where they come
from). I would like to use something more representative of the actual
application (like the "real" WordPerfect and StarOffice Icons). Anyone know
how to do this?

Thanks.

Re: [newbie] browser

2000-03-29 Thread Murray Strome

Out of curiosity, where did you find an rpm version of the 128 bit version of
Netscape 4.71? On the Red Hat site, I can find one for 4.71, and the standard
regular version of 4.72. At the Netscape site, I can find the 128 bit version
of 4.72, but it is not in rpm format and things do not get carried over cleanly
from Communicator 4.6 when using the ns install they suggest.

Probably it is just a "default" install. It does not install networking.
Same for "make" and co. - they are not installed on default.

This will improve in 7.1 - kernel-sources will REQUIRE make, tcl/tk,
gcc... Am I lazy, or am i lazy?.-))

Again assuming you're using KDE

Tag the big K on the lower left of your screen. You'll find a sub
heading of Internet and kppp will be located in there.

there are a lot of choices when editing / adding a new account but it's
fairly safe to accept the defaults given unless specifically told to do
so by your ISP. All you should need to do is enter the phone number
you're goning to dial, enter the afore mentioned DNS IP numbers, and
tell kppp where to find your modem. Just in case you're not aware

com1 = ttyS0
com2 = ttyS1
etc.

under kppp / edit is an area to select the modem port, query the modem
and set the port speed.

let us know how it works out.

feel free to mail me off list at

This is one of the reasons why we use rpm-s now. ;->>
If it is just a binary tarball, you can do:

rm `tar -tzf NAME.tar.gz`

If it is a source-code, then you really want to take a look at the output
of make install. Good luck.

RE: [newbie] Internet Problems

2000-03-29 Thread Pittman, Merle

you only need Kppp if you are using dialup.

Since you are using a PCMCIA card I would assume it is a network card (since
most modems are built in) so you must be using a cable or dsl modem, not
dialup. Therefore, you don't need Kppp.

STARTING LINUX WITH LOADLIN.

Step by step installation:
- make a dir in windoz (ex: loadlin)
- copy loadlin.exe to your dir.
Modif of 'MSDOS.SYS' :
-click on this file and disable 'readonly'
-open with an editer the file and set BootGUI=0 ( in section [Options](this
don't start the logo of windoz.
- in the same section set Logo=0
Modif of CONFIG.SYS :
-open with a texteditor this file.
-insert at top :
[menu]
menuitem=WIN, Windows 98
menuitem=LINUX, linux
menudefault=WIN, 10  #or LINUX as you like !
[WIN]

-insert at bottom :
shell=C:\loadlin\loadlin.exe c:\loadlin\vmlinuz root=/dev/hd
(here I suppose your HD = C, replace hd with your root partition in
linux)

Now go boot-up linux.
mount your dos partition and copy 'vmlinuz-2.2x' to the dir
'loadlin' as 'vmlinuz'.

That's all.
Good luck

get the Communicator, Common, and Navigator files...also the easiest way I
found to install 4.72 was to uninstall the existing version (that way there
are no version conflicts), don't worry about DIR being empty, and installing
new version. The DIR not being empty means that all you bookmarks, plugins
are safe. After this proceedure, my Nutscrape came up without a problem with
my plugin's, and I think my bookmarks also. You might want to back-up your

You can use gnomba, but it's a gui program.
Or you can use smbclient to make you requests.

Re: [newbie] using kpackage to upgrade netscape

2000-03-29 Thread Mike & Tracy Holt

If you use kpackage, you need to make sure that it doesn't check
dependencies or else it will just complain. You already know that each
package depends on each other, so go ahead and uncheck that box; I'm not
sure what files are being replaced when you check 'replace files', so I like
to leave that unchecked - you can always delete later if you don't want
something laying around.

2000-03-29 Thread Herman R.willett

Hi:

I had this same problem (actualy it happens often). The solution is to telnet
in to the linux box that appeas to be hunk, then

su

ps -e | grep scape

then after obtaining the process id for netscakp, issue a

kill

or

kill -k

After this, things return to normal on my linux box.

Re: [newbie] browser

2000-03-29 Thread Mike & Tracy Holt

You don't need the '--force' option, just put the three files in one
directory and type 'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' and there won't be a dependency problem
because you're installing all at the same time.

*note* If you install Netscape 128 bit version, it doesn't allow you to
install both communicator and navigator, navigator is built into
communicator. You'll need to uninstall the old navigator and just install
the common and communicator packages - confusing? This may also be the case
with the standard version, I haven't tried (I'm using the 128 bit version).
Try using all three packages first, and if you have a problem installing,
try leaving out the navigator package.

[newbie] QuakeII mouse problem

2000-03-29 Thread David Hester

Hey all,

I am running mandrake 7.0.. and gotten everything installed.. I am dual
booting between win98 and linux.
I decided to get my quake II game running on the linux side... so I linked
/usr/local/games/quake2\base2q to the windows partition. so that seems to
work I then the quake2 binaries.. and the 3dfx binaries.. all works well
(except I can only get my 3dfx to work while I am root) that I know is a
permissions problems... but the only Thing I can't get working is the
mouse.. I have a microsoft mouse with scroll wheel.
I have modified the libvga.conf in the /etc/vga/ folder .. and have tried
the settings for microsoft,PS/2, Intellimouse..

I also have run the XF86Setup.. and played with the different mice settings
there...even playing with the settings there I noticed the scroll wheel
didn't register..
Does anyone have a mouse with a scroll wheel working?.. is it a setup driver
or setup I need to run?
Also when modifing the libvga.conf... do I have to reboot linux for that to
take effect I am still unsure of how linux handles start up and config
files..

Thanks

[newbie] Mandrake and large hard Drive on 486

2000-03-29 Thread jflanaga

Thanks in Advance,

I have Mandrake 6.1. I'm wanting to put it on my IBM ValuePoint 486 DX66.
I have a 1.2Gig hard drive that I want to use for the system. The bios doesn't
support
High capacity Hard Drives. I've read somewhere (which was full of bad links)
that you don't need Overlay software to make the bios recognize the hard drive
if you use Linux.
My cd-rom on the 486 is not bootable. I also have a k-6 350 with cd-rom, which
will boot, except that I get corruption when I try to dual boot with it(another
long story).

Can anyone tell me if there's a way to install Linux on a 127MB disk then
install Mandrake onto the large drive?

Another question that might help, is there a small distrabution that has
network card support and will communicate with a WIN98 machine over a network?

Maybe this is a better way of putting it:

PC 1 Aptiva with CD-ROM and CD-RW running win98FE, ethernet card 10/100

PC2 Valuepoint 486 with 127 mb hard drive *recognized*, 20mb hardcard
*recognized* 1.2GB hard drive *not recognized* currently running WIN3.1
CD-ROM or eithernet card can be added. But CD-ROM isn't a boot device.

I'm quite confused on how I should install Linux on the 486.

[newbie] loadlin

2000-03-29 Thread Herve ROMANO

I'm using Linux Mandrake 7.0 at work and I would like to stay hidden. A floppy disk
boot is possible but a boot from DOS using loadlin would be better.

So I made the standard manipulation :
1 - Logged as root and in a console window :
cp /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdk /dev/DOS_hda1/dossiers/linux/vmlinuz
2 - I made that ".bat" file under DOS:
   @echo off
   smartdrv /C
   c:\dossiers\linux\loadlin c:\dossiers\linux\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7

But the system hangs after few seconds of booting. Everything works fine until the
line"autorun done". But the following lines are:
Attempt to access beyond end of the device
... (a lot of error lines concerning the device)
Kernel panic ... etc ...

And then I need to reboot.

If I use the "-d" option the only message is :
Uncompressing Linux
CRC error
-- System halted

(nothing else)

What's wrong? Everything works well with a normal boot with Lilo or with the floppy.

The configuration is 1 HD with a primary partition used by dos (C: = hda1) and an
extended one with two logical drives for DOS (D: = hda5, E: = hda6) and then the linux
partitions.

Second question :
To restore a normal boot (without lilo), is the command line "fdisk /mbr" (under dos)?
I'm not sure of that thing because the last time I installed and used linux was in
1996 (it was faster with my old 486-66MHz/8Mo than today with that PIII-450MHz/64Mo!)
and I don't want to crash the thing (it's not my computer).

Thanks

Thanks Rial,

The curious thing is that the thing has run great for so long until I installed
7.0-2 to get some new features I wanted. The disk cache makes a lot of sense except
that the machine was left in this "hung" mode for several hours last night until I
got home to check it out. I wonder if it is possible that something might be
interupting the disk write (several people have sugested Java in Netscape)

Things to ponder

Sounds like your DNS or routing is wrong.

If your straight dialin and use kppp go to the DNS setup tab and put your ISP's DNS
server's IP addresses in there. Make sure you put your domain in the domain box.

Oh, please. Never ever give someone the advice to use --force with rpm. I
totally screwed up my old redhat 5.2 that way, about a year ago.

Instead, identify and download the package that would satisfy these dependencies
and install it first. Or just put 'em on the same line alltogether like this:
rpm -Uvh netscape-file dependency-file

lloww. I did that type of install to check it out and
NOT good. If you use the 'lilo', which is the BEST, you install
Linux/Mandrake to a seperate Partition. Lnx4Win is installed PIGGY
BACKED on Win is the best explanation I can give. It is NOT in a
seperate Partition.

I'm sure it's hung. Mouse is dead, can't Ctrl+Alt+Backspace,
Ctrl+Alt+Delete, can't change workspace nothin'

I finally got home to check this thing out and man was this thing locked
up. Had the wife leave it on just so I could give it a bash (pun
intended 8-)) but no-go. Finally had to hit the reset button and during
reboot it would do the following

boot:
Loading linux.
Uncompressing linux..

CRC error
--System halted

it would do this no matter how I tried rebooting (reset button, big red
help switch, etc..) anyhow I finally got disgusted with it and just shut
it down and walked away bu... curiosity got the best of me and I
went back to it after 10 minutes and viola, it's alive.

>From what I can find a CRC error is Cyclic Redunancy Check but I have no
clue what it means or what caused it. I can tell you that the machine
has been up and running almost flawlessly 24/7 since October.

TIA

Re: [newbie] xterm not refreshing correctly

2000-03-29 Thread nodyak0

I am sure you have tried using some of the other window managers. I have
found that the 'Icewm' is very easy to use and can move around very easy.
A different windows manager may give you a clue on this prob. If it is
repeatable in a different manager then it is system wide if not it is
just in kde or which ever one you use mostly.

Re: [newbie] Network Neighborhood equivalent

Steven,

Look for LinuxNeighborhood on the Net. It somehow appears to be similar to Net Neigh
of Windows. However you'll need samba running and the samba clients installed. I'll
search my backups and see whether I have a copy for you.

i did the install with the low level of security. is there any way to
get the security lower than that? all i really need is access as root,
that would be ok with me. any suggestions?

seth

Sorry Seth I really don't know that much. I learn a lot by trial and error. In
other words I fool around with my system until I screw something up. Then I
reinstall and start over. I should get a life :)
My guess, check the install log in the root home directory and look for
errors. But I don't know how to fix them :(

Check the mail archives for newbie. I think you need the no_accel
option in XF96Config. There might be other work arounds tho.

Assuming this is an x problem, try booting in init 3 (linux 3
at the boot prompt). this will get you in in a terminal mode. Perhpas you
can make adjustments there. Try running XF86Setup.

Did you edit /etc/lilo.conf ?
As root add the lines:
