Peculiar? No.

In kppp is a check box asking if you want to configure your hostname
from their server. You have this checked. It logs in, changes the name
of your system, and you no longer have permission to do anything in X.
Un check the box.

[newbie] kppp won't let me open applications

2000-04-06 Thread Stephen F. Bosch

Okay, my turn to ask questions:

I am setting up a machine for someone else who will only have dialup
access to the internet. I have managed to configure the modem without
any trouble; kppp can dial in, connect, and authenticate, and I can even
surf and ping and all that good stuff.

Here's the *strange* part:

Once connected, I can't *open* anything. Nix. Nada. I can't open
anything on the Kpanel, I can't open apps from the Kmenu... the system
is paralyzed. All I can do, it seems, is disconnect kppp.

No error messages of any kind.

If I have Netscape open when I connect, I can surf normally. If I don't
have Netscape open, I'm SOL -- because it won't open.

After I disconnect -- bingo, I can open apps again.

Peculiar, no?

No, you got it mixed up. The fields are as follows

1st: The minute of the hour(0-59)
2nd: The hour of the day(0-23)
3rd: The day of the month (1-31)
4th: The month (1-12)
5th: The day of the week (Sun=0, Mon=1, ... Sat=6)

in your ex. 1 * * * * /usr/bin/... means every hour 12:01, 13:01, 14:01,
etc...
the asterisk * means every. It is a little confusing at first. To run every
ten minute would be 10,20,30,40,50 * * * * /usr/bin.

[newbie] installation problems

2000-04-06 Thread kerroppa kerokero

hi all,
I just received Linux Mandrake GoldPack and tried to
install it on my machine (Micron TransPort TREK 2,
233MHz, 64M, 4.0GHD w/WinNT). I don't particurally
like this GUI-installation so that I used the
text-base installation. It went fine until it asked
for creating a boot disk. I tied to create a boot
disk but got an error message everytime I attempt to
create one. Also, when I attempt to install LILO on
MBR, I get an error and couldn't install LILO at all.
Now, I re-installed my old Mandrake 6.5. Does anyone
know why I cannot creat a boot disk and/or install
LILO on MBR? Is this version of Linux incompatible
with my machine or I got a defect CD-rom? Thanks in
advance.

Ya sure can! When you boot to Mandrake (either off the CD or a disk) it'll
get to a part where you are to pick a partition. When that time comes,
pick your second hard drive (the device name should be someting like hdb).
Mandrake automatically installs something called LILO. This is a boot manager
for both systems. I have the same configuration (Mandrake 7 with Win98,
but on a PII400, 1 hard drive) and it works fine! Good luck!
P.S.  Be carefull! Any information on that second hard drive WILL
be deleted.

Hello all,

I just have a quick question about crontab. How do I get a program to

1 * * * * /usr/bin/...

would I use decimals or fractions to represent 10 minutes? For example:

0.17 * * * * /usr/bin/...

or

1/6 * * * * /usr/bin/...

Are any of the above lines right or is there a proper way to represent 10
minutes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: [newbie] Probs with NetworkEverywhere Fast Ethernet Card

2000-04-06 Thread philomena

Hi,

Me again - I have had the same problem for a while, using 6.1. I was hoping
that 7.0 or 7.02 might fix this, but I guess it won't. I haven't really seen
any posts responding to this so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions
beyond buying another card I would appreciate it.

Thx,
philomena

I'm using a NetworkEverywhere Fast Ethernet card on my machine. Following
the instructions to compile the version of the tulip driver to work with it
generates pages of errors from the compiler.

Has anyone out there setup this card to work with Mandrake 7.0?

Any help would be appreciated.

Try Igloo FTP, it works GREAT. But is not free, you have to pay
like 15 bucks. Well worth it.

[newbie] Totally non functional ftp server

2000-04-06 Thread Vic

The error was made of uninstalling "wu-ftpd"
to replace it with "ProFTPd" and as a result
I have no functional ftp server, the response
was "connection refused".

Then Proftpd was uninstalled and
an attempt was made to install wu-ftpd
again to restore previous working ftp server.

This produced an unacceptable result.

Response to ftp kittypuss.dyndns.org was:

connection refused.

This is not an acceptable result
when I ftp into my server.

This is the only acceptable result

connecting to kittypuss.dyndns.org
enter password [or similar response]

End of message.

Hello again all ,
M,y thanks to all who offered info in regards to getting my cdrw up and
running, even if it didnt help, your input did at least help keep me running long
enough to get this done "right".All the entries to fstab, mtab, linuxconfig, etc
did not turn the trick, what did work ,and took me two months to remember how it
was done the first time ,was two entries in "proc" Being /proc/devices and
/proc/filesystems,and my entering, as root ,these lines ) configured to my
machine so if you try this consider what you have on yours),anyway ,the line was
(is)"/dev/sbpcd /mnt/cdrw iso9660 user,noauto,rw"
This worked for me,though I have to mount the cdrw manually(mount /mnt/cdrw, and
umount /mnt/cdrw)this is not a big problem,as my other cd,the read only, mounts
automaticly.

I had done this some time back but had completly forgotten where I had written it
down or what I had done ,since I have re-installed Mandrake about twenty
different times over the last three months( that's an honest assesment)

Anyway I can now die peacfully ,thankyou all again,Bill

Yea, it's possible, I'm dong a similar situation on my machine.

I'm not sure how 7.0 does the installation (I run 6.1) but Mandrake has a
tutorial on it that should answer your questions:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Demo/Mandrake7/install/index.php3

And I'm sure that during the installation LILO (LInux LOader) will be
installed, which is a program that lets you dual boot between Windows and
Linux.

[newbie] 7.0 Upgrade

2000-04-06 Thread Daniel Knapp

Help,

I just upgraded Mandrake from 6.1 to 7.0 and the following programs no
longer work:
Acrobat reader
Corel WordPerfect
MapleV
They all give me the following error message:
can't load library 'libXt.so.6'

I haven't had this problem with Netscape, Mathematica, etc.

I looked for the file on my hard drive, and it seems to be in the right
places:
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libXt.so.6
/usr/i586-glibc20-linux/lib/libXt.so.6

Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this.

Thank you,

Daniel

Re: [newbie] How do I install a video card?

2000-04-06 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Use "setup" as superuser. Do your best at selecting the closes thing to your monitor
and test to see if it looks okay. It doesn't
have to be perfect because you can do the fine-tuning in the next step. Then open up
"/etc/X11/XF86Config" in some editor. Now go
to the "Monitor Section". Change the two lines "HorizSync" & "VertRefresh" to match
your monitor's specifications. Restart X.

Please let me know if you need more info.

I'm sorry people are only civilized in here when you believe that Linux is
god. I neither worship nor love bill gates. I definately do not worship
nor love Linux. I respect both, and on my machine, Linux crashes more often
than win2000 so that is my experience. I for one am completely sick of
sitting here and listening to a bunch of uniformed fascists rant and rave
about how much they love Linux and how much windows sucks. I believe both
OS's are strong and that is why I run 2000 and Linux.

Anyway, don't respond because I'm going to leave the group because, I get
sick of the few people in here that are so damn extreme in their views.
I'll get on a list of people who actually know what the hell they are taking
about and have something other than "Windows sucks and Linux rules!!!" every
other post. I'm guessing that most of you don't even know what the
underlying structure of an operating system is so I don't really see how in
the hell you are so damn qualified to speak on what makes a good one.

I'm out,

Stop the arguing! Can't we all get along? Comparing
the 2 OS's is not fair. They are both so different
its amazing. I do agree with Stephen in that this is
a Linux board and if you want to worship Gates you can
find thousands of places to do it on the web. Most of
the posts here are very informative and the people are
for the most part civilized so please settle down.

Hey, man -- I have to support Windows, I am not pulling this out of the

and I reserve the right to hate the damn thing.

May I ask you *where* Windows is today? Oh, that's right -- it's crashing

[newbie] I cannot get modem working...

2000-04-06 Thread kerroppa kerokero

Hi all,
I see a couple of posts on modem problems... Here I
also have a problem/problems with my modem. I have
WinNT and mandrake6.5 installed on my notebook. I set
modem device /dev/ttyS2 (since it uses com3 in WinNT),
but when I try to query modem, I get a message saying
"Sorry, the modem is busy". But for some reason when
I set modem device /dev/ttyS1 and query modem, I get a
reply "modem is ready" and Modem Query Results pops up
(and it's a blank result). Then I try to connect, it
hangs at "initializing Modem..." My modem is Xircom,
RealPrt Ethernet 10/100+Modem56. I know this modem
should work because I use to have RH linux 6.1 and it
was working fine (till I switched over to Mandrake
6.5). If anyone could help me out, I'd really
appreciate! Thanks in advance.

Had the same exact problem with a 3com 3C509 card. I know that the card was good, but
I switched it with a 3C905, and upon bootup Kudzu, detected it and installed it. Now I
dont get any errors. Is is possible the 7.0 does not like old cards?

[newbie] Problem on install with CD-ROM drive

2000-04-06 Thread David Murphy

I'm trying to install Mandrake 7.0 on a Pentium 120 PC
with a 24x (Wearnes?) CD-ROM drive. After I updated my
BIOS so I could boot from CD-ROM, I tried it. The
machine recognized the CD-ROM and I saw the Linux boot
messages going by. When a box on the screen said
"Initializing CD-ROM...", however, it paused. After a
minute or two, without an error message (that I could
see), everything shut itself back down again. Has
anyone heard of this problem? Is there any way around
it or am I totally stuck?

Thanks for any help you might be able to give...

I also had trouble with my network card recently...turned out my problem was
that it had somehow gained the IRQ and IO addresses of my soundcard. You
could check to make sure that these values are correct, if you can actually
find your network card within Linux.

What sort of network card is it? ISA? PCI?

Do:
fdisk -l /dev/sda (With a disk in the drive) It should list the
partition table on the disk. If this doesn't work:

I don't have printing set up (Don't need it very often) but I think if
you do ps aux you might see the printer daemon and be able to kill the
process long enough to test. If it works you can always track down the
startup for it and remove it.

Startup scripts are in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d (console mode) or /etc/rc.d/rc5.d

Try ctl-alt-plus or ctl-alt-minus and see if that changes your resolution.
If
not, try running "xf86config" from either the command line, or from an xterm
session and somewhere in there, you will be able to define more that one
resolution type. I think. Can someone else on the list verify?

It does none of these things well -- and judging by the length of time it
has taken Linux to
get where it is, it should not be too long before nothing remains the sole
domain of Windows.
It took 16 years for Windows to reach the point it is at now -- it has taken
Linux only nine.
The writing is on the wall.

Windows still sucks - it's expensive, the support for it is abysmal, and
worse, the user is
prevented from solving his own problems because he doesn't have access to
the bloody source
code. Period.

Look -- you're on a Linux mailing list. If you want to people to praise the
damn thing, go to
a Microsoft list. There are still plenty of suckers out there who think
Windows is the cat's

support.

Could anyone help me please? I am keen to try Linux for home recording due
to the instability of Windoze. Firstly let me say that I have absolutely no
interest in learning how Linux works - I simply want a stable environment in
which to work. I have a second HD (2g) and would like to turn this over
entirely to Linux for my recording.
Firstly, does anyone know of any good software packages for this purpose? I
currently use Cool Edit Pro with Windoze. A chap in Germany told me he had
heard of 'SWave' (apparently similar to WaveLab). I use .wav files for all
my recording.
Secondly (and the BIG one!), installing. Can I load Mandrake 7 on my 2nd
drive and use a dual booting system of some kind? I've tried RH and given up
completely and also Caldera Open Linux. This one was a little more
successful but I still gave up. It seems to me that you need to be capable
of running the Starship Enterprise to be able to get anywhere! I have no
interest in becoming Cpt' Kirk - I just wanna play music!!
Any help/advice would be truly appreciated,
Thankx,
Toni Vines.

[expert] How to run Netscape 6 from any dir!

2000-04-06 Thread Rial Juan

Ok,

Quite a few people here asked how to run this new netscape, and the answers
generally were: "cd into the newly created dir and type ./netscape or
./mozilla".

However, there is an easy way to running it from any dir. First, move the newly
created dir to wherever you want it, and rename it if you like (really, they
could have come up with a more descriptive name than "package", right?). In my
case I moved everything to /usr/local/netscape-v600/ so I'll be using this one
as example.

Then, in this new dir, edit 2 files. The first file to edit is the file called
"netscape" which is in fact a simple shell-script.

There you must change these lines: (originals are the ones starting with "#")

  # dist_bin=""
  dist_bin="/usr/local/netscape-v600"

  # MOZILLA_BIN="./mozilla-bin"
  MOZILLA_BIN="$dist_bin/mozilla-bin"

Then save this file and open the file called "run-mozilla.sh" and change this:

  # MOZ_DIST_BIN=""
  MOZ_DIST_BIN="/usr/local/netscape-v600"

Now you should be able to start it without cd'ing into the mozilla dir. Handy
for creating a desktop button that launches "/usr/local/netscape-v600/netscape".

If you want your old bookmarks under the new mozilla, simply copy your
~/.netscape/bookmarks.html to ~/.mozilla/PROFILE-NAME/bookmarks.html (where
PROFILE-NAME is the name of the profile you created. Go look in the ~/.mozilla
dir if you forgot what you named it. You'll loose the new mozilla bookmarks, but
then again. Who ever uses the preloaded bookmarks that come with the browser? If
you really want to have them, well... Do some html-editing to merge both files
in one.

I crossposted this to the expert list as well, although nobody asked about it
there. I figured some of the experts might be interrested as well.

RE: [newbie] How do I install a video card?

2000-04-06 Thread BryanMoorehead

Try ctl-alt-plus or ctl-alt-minus and see if that changes your resolution. If
not, try running "xf86config" from either the command line, or from an xterm
session and somewhere in there, you will be able to define more that one
resolution type. I think. Can someone else on the list verify?

[newbie] update to XFree86 4.0

2000-04-06 Thread Claus Atzenbeck

I was downloading XFree86 version 4.0 as RPM. I was trying to upgrade
my current version 3.3.6, bu I couldn't:

Almost every package had some dependency problem.

So I decided to "rpm -e --nodeps " and installing
the new v4.0 packages. The result: X didn't start up anymore
(Error 2).

My question:

I have the new RPMs here. How can I upgrade my XFree stuff??

Thanks a lot for your help!

Regards,
Claus.

be, with text that reads "No Partition - ERROR" across it - Linux and Windows

Y'all have been a great help in isolating my X probs - As it turns out, the
problem seems to be VMWare related (I neglected to mention that I was running in

and major snafu's, I ended up re-installing Linux completely, and it still won't
start X - The only thing left is VMWare... I'll re-install VMWare and let y'all

Re: [newbie] wheel mouse

2000-04-06 Thread Michael Holt

Edit the lines in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file under the Pointer section
to look like this:
Section "Pointer"
    Protocol
"MouseManPlusPS/2"
    Device
"/dev/mouse"
    Buttons
3
    ZAxisMapping  4 5
EndSection
Put a copy of /etc/X11/imwheelrc in your /home/user directory, and finally
put a link in your autostart folder (in KDE) to /usr/X11R6/bin/imwheel
-k
Restart 'X' and you should be good to go.

In rpmdrake select Configuration, Add location of packages CDROM (suggested
name is extra). It will look on the CD with the StarOffice rpm (you did
put it in the drive didn't you?) and adds it to the list of installable
packages. You can find it in (I seem to remember)
Applications/Publishing/Word Processor. Select the StarOffice rpm and
press install. When this is done, go to /opt/Office51/install-kde and run
this. Voila! (I had to do it several times, eventually creating a bigger

RE: [newbie] Boot Manager

2000-04-06 Thread Oliver Stieber

3 ways.
or at least 3 ways i know of
if your in x windows,
1:- rpmdrake
there should be an icon for RPMDrake (you'll need root
password/rites),
if it's a cd, the menu option on the far right that isn't help and
whos name i cant rember,
well click on it, then update, and then instalation.
this will update the lists of rpm's on the cd.
click the icon with two circular arrows this will change you between
what you have installed and what youhave on the cd.
you should see a list of available files. select the one you want
and click the install button (bottomright)
2:- kpackager, archive
if you have installed kpackager/archive then you
can select the file from the directory this should bring up an
instalation manager,
it should be fairly obvious what to do from either kpackager or
archive.

3: rpm from the command line.
you can also install from the command line.

the instalation general systax is

rpm -i filename

if you need to install somthing other than a tar/rpm eg a deb file
it's probably a good idea to install alien first, and convert the pagkage to
a rpm.

[newbie] KDE problems

2000-04-06 Thread kiriakos

Hi all,

I have installed Mandrake 7.02 numerous times and I now have a pretty
good feel of the buttons to push, I even do it with my eyes closed,
hehe...

Seriously, my problem is with KDEit seems to start up fine but just
before the icons appear on screen, I get KFM error messages that 'this
MIME type wasn't found' or something. I get as many messages as the MIME
types supported, and when I OK all the windows, icons and taskbar
finally appear. But all the icons on the Desktop are those papers with a
question mark (probably general unknown icon?) and whatever I try to
click gives me a window that asks what program to associate this link
with. So I guess the KDE installation is incomplete, or corrupted.

However, I noticed that everytime I do either an install or an upgrade,
on reboot my root partition comes up with errors and a check is forced.
During the check, many files (most in /var/spool) are changed to
filetype 6. (yeah I know, I'm RTFM at the same time :-)

Does this mean that my hard disk might have tons of bad sectors? (It WAS
acting up somehow, before I decided to put linux on him). And if so, is
there a way to mark them as such, prior to upgrading, and do a
reinstallation on the healthy remaining disk? It seems that whenever I
reinstall or upgrade, the same files get the same errors. I'm not even
sure if these errors have anything to do with my KDE not working, but it
seems very likely.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
GG

[newbie] Boot Manager

2000-04-06 Thread Mark Ward

I'm attempting to install Mandrake Linux 7.02 and want to run it through
BootMagic 1.0 that came with PartitionMagic 4.0

My setup is as follows:

I have two physical hard drives in my computer. The first drive has two
primary partitions and one extended partition divided into 5 logical
partitions. The first partition contains Windows 98 Second Edition, the
second partition contains Windows 2000. The second drive has one primary
partition and one extended partition divided into one logical partition. On
the second drive I have installed Linux to the primary partition which I
believe is listed as hdb1.

When I installed Linux I installed the bootmanager and pointed it to the
partition hdb1. Read it in here somewhere that this was the thing to do. .
Now when I boot to Linux using BootMagic the screen flickers madly and the
printer prints out the screen contents much like someone is sitting there
pressing [Print Screen].

I can boot Linux using the floppy disk I created and it works great. What
I'd like to be able to do is boot into Linux using BootMagic. Can someone
detail the steps involved from the beginning to achieve this.

Regards,

Mark

Just go to the directory it created when you untared, and type "mozilla" w/o
quotes.

I will accede that it is a pre release copy but they still have a lot
of work to do for the final version.  A lot of work.

It was said earlier long before the beta release of netscape that most
web sites will not load correctly as most web sites are not setup using
the web standards...
it will take some time before all the web sites to be made using the
web standards...
most sites that will not load right are those using the older web building
tools as most tools don't have the standards built into it yet...

I found that qftp works fine and has a simple interface and should be
available from the basic Mandrake 7.0 installation cd

try ':help coloring' within vim.

You can also have a look at the end of the
/usr/share/vim/gvimrc_example.vim file.

2000-04-06 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Wolfen:

Now that you have unzipped (untarred) the Netscape 6.0 file, cd into the
"package" directory that you just created and type ./netscape (period
followed by forward slash plus "netscape"). "netscape" is the executable
but you need the . and / to launch it.
