RE: [newbie] Hey..IT WORKS...

2000-04-12 Thread Mike Perry

Install the Mozzilla fonts in your Netscape.
Worked for me.
Here is the info from www.mandrakeuser.org

Larger, Less Ugly Fonts For Netscape
If you are somewhat shortsighted and too lazy to wear glasses (like me ;-)),
you have every reason to curse at Netscape. The fonts are small. Of course,
you can set a bigger font size via 'Edit' - 'Preferences' - 'Appearance' -
'Fonts'. Which will leave you with bigger but quite ugly fonts (Netscape
doesn't scale fonts right).
Solution? Get the mozilla-fonts package ,
unpack the archive, read the included README.
Create a new directory (like mkdir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/moz). Edit the
included Makefile to include this directory. Run make pcf and then make
install (as root). Edit '/etc/X11/fs/conf' and add the new directory to the
font paths. Run xset fp+ /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/moz/. Restart the browser.
Go to the font choosing menu, select the Mozilla fonts and be amazed (these
fonts are very large, you might want to reduce their size to 12 or even 9).
No more problems with small fonts, I promise! ;-).

Cheers:

Michael Perry.

The culprit is the linux.ld.so file.

It somehow either leaks memory, or mismanages the resources.

Hello. I installed Mandrake 7.0 on a machine that is connected to a LAN. I have not

Any suggestions? Advice?

Your login screen should tell you. If you're machine's booting right
into KDE, you can use the key combo CTRL-ATL-F2 and every other function
key up to 6 to switch among your other terminals. It should give you a
nice penguin and Linux Mandrake version... Use CTRL-Alt-F7 to get back

Re: [newbie] apache

2000-04-12 Thread Icebreaker

Make sure you change the user and group that Apache is running on. Create a
user www and a group www hit return for the password (to make sure there is
no password) This should prevent hacking through using the www user. Also,
chown your /home/httpd/* to user www and group www (recursively with -R)
Then read the httpd.pid file in /etc/httpd/
execute the command 'kill -s HUP 'the number found in httpd.pid' ' ,
it will restart itself. This should fix your problem

On the other hand, the reason we don't see any posts with the correct
spelling in them is probably because they get bounced - everything we write
is checked before getting to the list - go on, spell either unsuscribe or
suscribe correctly and see what happens...

It's a moot point though really. The correct spelling wouldn't work either,
so I don't see why people think that a close, but incorrect, spelling would
do any better.

2000-04-12 Thread quaylar

hi all !

I've following problem with setting up my soundcard under linux :

at startup (kernel boot) i get :

sb: dsp reset failed

and when trying to configure my card with sndconfig i get :

"sb.o : device or ressource busy"

now i know from various how-tos and faqs that this must have something to do with the
io/irq/dma settings.i set the card to use i/o 0x220, irq5, and dma 1...

the i/o and dma settings i took from the windows device manager and the irq i took
from kde control center / PCI which says there (mysteriously the soundcard is
detected by kde ) :

also found by lspci:

bus 0 , device 9 , function 0
multimedia audio controller, unknown vendor, unknown device (rev 160) vendor id=1319
device id=801
medium devsel. fast back-to-back capable. irq5 . master capable . no bursts min gnt=4
max lat=40
i/o at 0xd000 [0xd001]

so i checked the files /proc/interrupts , /proc/ioports /proc/dma output as follows :

dma : 4 cascade

irq : 0 timer
1 keyboard
2 cascade
4 serial
12 ps2-mouse
13 fpu
14 ide0
15 ide1

ioports:
-001f : dma
0020-003f pic1
0040-005f timer
0060-006f keyboard
0080-008f dma page reg
00a0-00bf pic2
00c00-00df dma2
00f0-00ff fpu
0170-0177 ide1

03f6-03f6 ide0
03f8-03ff serial (auto)
d800-d807 ide0
d808-d80f ide1

so i think there should be no problems with resources...i also checked some ftape
driver which was mentioned in one how-to to use dma 1, but it wasnt checked in
kernel config.
futhermore i built a new kernel with modular sound support and support for sb, and MAD
16.nothing works
the file /dev/sndstat contains no values for the different settings and /var/log
messages states following :

kernel: sb : dsp reset failed

i tried the config program lothar too..but with the same results as sndconfig.i
set pnp in bios to yes--the soundcard is a PCI and PnP card.although sndconfig
tells me : no pci or pnp card found in system !
i also tried to use other drivers than sb pro.such as mad16 that were mentioned in
one how-to to work better with sb pro compatible soundcards...but i get again
"device or resource busy"-..---so i think support of the card by linux is not the
prob..

my system information :

i use a PII 350, Mediaforte PCI-64 PCF soundcard (which is according to mediaforte
fully soundblaster compatible and working under linux), and kernel version
2.2.14...

since i have now read really every howto about sound including
/usr/src/linux/documentation/sound and /drivers/sound i would appreciate if someone
could help me at this problem or at least tell me some further resources about
troubleshooting sound (i know from
opensound.com)

thx in advance

Weird question. The binaries are in /usr/bin and /usr/sbin/, the
configuration files are in /etc/, the log files are in /var/log/samba/.
And the installation files are on your mandrake cdrom.
Mandrake/RPMS/samba* files.

It's a service. You can start or stop it with the script
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb
And you can include it in your runlevel configuration.

[newbie] LS-120 Drive, How to set as floppy?

2000-04-12 Thread G A

Hi I've got a LS-120 drive,
(Execlent time saver by the way!) and it's set up as
the only floppy drive.
FDC on mother board disabled and old 1.44MB drive
removed. As it can read normal disks this is great,
BUT Win95 is able to use it as A:,
DOS boots disks from it like a normal floppy.
BUT I CAN'T get Mandrake-linux 7 to do the same.

During boot it's detected as hdd and editing
the line in /etc/fstab to

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount ...,dev=/dev/hdd

just causes KDE/GNOME/... to lock up when I try and
access the drive, but a command like;

/dev/hdd /mnt/floppy vfat ...bla...

mount /dev/hdd /mnt/floppy

works and is perfectly OK!
Is this a problem with supermount, has anyone else
had the same problem? How do I fix it?
Please help, I'm fed up of reading every manual on
my HDD!

Gary.

[newbie] Problems

2000-04-12 Thread Valjean

I have a "freshly" installed system, so no extra software has been
installed except the Mandrake 7.0 install. When I use Netscape in xwin,
it will work, then suddenly will stop. I mean the page will stay on the
screen but when you click on a link, nothing happens. It just stays
there. Shut Netscape down, and then try to bring it back up, and nothing
happens, it merely "shrugs off" the attempt.
Now, if I bring up a virtual terminal and look in the .netscape
directory, there is a blinking file called lock. Delete this and netscape
loads fine...for a while.. Ideas, thoughts on how to clear this up?

and why does X freeze all the time?
it will work fine for a while, then I'll leave for work, with no apps
running, 8 hours later I'll come back home and low and behold x will have
frozen, pressing keys on the keyboard don't work, the mouse won't move the
pointer, nothing. I have to restart the computer.

Not sure if that exact video card is listed ( I think it is), but the monitor
if not exactly listed, you should use the GENERIC MONITOR/GENERIC MULTISYNC,
If the monitor setting are off in CUSTOM, you can damage your monitor.
About ROOT login, what is your system SECURITY set at...my guess is above
MEDIUM, lower it a little then try again. You can lower it through DrakConf

[newbie] V7 : Not recognising my Netgear ethernet card but has 'configured ' another

2000-04-12 Thread David . Clark

Hi folks

I have Linux up and running but no networking (or sound but I'll save that for
another day).

If I run up DrakConf and look into the Hardware config (Lothar) it shows the n/w
card as a 'Lite-On Coomunication Inc LNE100TX'. I actually have a NetGear
FA310TX which may or may not be the same card as this under the covers.
However the I/O address and IRQ values are both -1 which suggest something is
wrong. Also if I try to select another card using the Config tool the only
NetGear card in the list is highlighted, again with values of -1 and if I click
OK nothing changes.

In the Network Config, if I pick the Basic Host option, the 'help' suggests I
run a menu option to configure the network but that option is just not there.
I'm OK with IP addresses etc as I used to run AIX systems.

I ran the pnp utility but it claims to find no PNP cards. I looked at the
Ethernet Howto but it looks very nuts & bolts compared to the rest of the V7
install.

I think I just need info on how to get the system to configure and use the card.
Interestingly the hub shows the card as active!

Many thanks for considering this.

tried a new desktop theme (using Enlightenment window manager), and I now have
Nutscrape in living color! I'm still in 24-bit color, not sure how this
happened...

I have installed a mandrake 7.0 with a net card and i know that it works
well because I can ping the rest of the computers (all of them are built in
win NT and win 9X.). But I don´t know how to see them and their shared
folders. I try to open the netscape but it shows me a message that I don´t
understand well. By the other hand when I try to see the linux computer in a
windows one only sometimes I find it making a "find PC" but when I go to
open it I´m asked for a name and password but I´m never recogniced nor root
nor nobody.

I know that all those tthings are made by samba but I can´t find samba in my
Linux... I dont´t know if I have to install it ( in that case plase tell me
how to do) or where find it. I only know that if I type samba in a terminal
I can start the services but I don´t know any more.

Please help me to set up my Linux in a lan to share folders and to see my
domain.
Thanks a lot.

It's because you have to make your users recognized by samba with
smbpasswd -a username. (man smbpasswd)

At least, that means that samba is installed. But if it isn't, just
mount your mandrake cd and install it with rpm -Uvh
To start your samba services nicely, type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start"

To set up your shares, you have to edit your /etc/smb.conf file. Find
more info in the man smb.conf and in the smb-HOWTO.

[newbie] Routing Problem ?

2000-04-12 Thread Rafael Haeusler

I have here a Linux-Box, which dials itself over ISDN in Internet.
Behind it further computers hang by IP Forwarding. On the dial in Box I
have only over the Proxy of the Provider access to the Web.
A simple "ping" to external server does not work. (the IP address
however one determines by DNS still correctly.) The other computers at
the home network (which are supplied by IP forwarding) have free access
to everything in the Web.
How could that be ? Some kind of routing problem ?

Actually 16 bit or 32 bit works. Just not 24 bit with Netscape.

[newbie] AMD Athlon

2000-04-12 Thread Carl Kehley

Anybody have any ideas on this one? I just built a new system with a
K-7 700, 128mb of ram, Seagate ATA66 hdd, and Diamond Stealth III video
card. I installed Mandrake 7.02, got the installer to recognize all the
memory, and everything seems to work pretty well. One question---why is
the speed being recognized as 696.2 bogomips? Seems awfully slow to me.

Hi
My Netscape Communicator is launching in black and white rather than the
colour interface!

Any suggestions on how to get it back to the original colours?

Thanks
