this whole thing baffles me because i got one a while back and i did not know it would
draw this whole issue up about key words like porn and hate words. it only sent me
back for the word porn though.

In the new versions of al distributions the problem should be fixed. It
includes the Xfree servers version 3.3 or higher.

[newbie] Is there any way to make the mouse smoother?

2000-05-08 Thread Chen, PeterX

I finally got Mandrake up and running! Love the Window managers

Is there anyone I can make my mouse move smoother? I've tried the
accelerate and threshold settings. They don't seem to do the trick. The
mouse is so smooth in Win2K. Is there any way I can get my mouse to perform
the same way in linux? Can I set the mouse resolution like you can in
Win2k? (setting it at 100Hz).

Re: [newbie] Installed SuSE yesterday

2000-05-08 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Caroldo you purposely state things in a obfuscatory
manner. In your original post you talked about fiddling
around instead of telling us what it was you actually
attempted to do. In both posts you've never said what
/size/brand/model of monitor you have or what you see (black
screen, fuzzy image, white but no visible image) when it
doesn't work. In this post you tell us you've got a tiny
drive, but not what size it actually is. It's as if you don't
really want help, just a place to tell people about your linux
adventure.

How about some facts and/or some detailed descriptions of your
actions in the next post.

this might help. when you insert mandrake it goes into its installation and it looks
like it will be a text based install. wait for a little while before turning your

No problem. There you have :
ftp://ftp.lokigames.com/pub/patches/quake3/linuxq3apoint-1.16n.x86.run

And not far from there, you also have the patches for the other loki games
(heretic, railroadtycoon II, myth2, ...)
You d/l the patch, run it (as root if you want to install the stuff in
/usr/local/games/quake3), then you replace the quake3/baseq3/pak0.pk3 by
the one that stands on your Quake CD. Note that if don't have enough place
or don't want to waste it, you can just make a symlink ;-) (but it takes
more time to load the game and the arena's, of course)
If your GL drivers are correctly installed, you just type :
cd /usr/local/games/quake3
./quake3
And then... YOU FRAG, YOU SHOOT, YOU KILL! :-)))

[newbie] watch what you say on this list

2000-05-08 Thread WolfRyder

Following is a copy of an email I am sending to the "filtering" site that
linux-mandrake uses. This is in reference to the email thread about
"Parental Control".

I received an email just now saying my email was " inappropriate subject
matter ". It was logged by you. I don't understand why, though. I was
answering an email on a listserv of which I am a member and we were
discussing filtering software for Linux as opposed to parental monitoring.

I don't understand why I was singled out for this type of monitoring when
the other people the list used the same word as I, but were not censured
(as far as I know).

You can bet I won't be discussing the merits of software filtering on that
list again. If they use this service to strike fear in the hearts of it's
participants when discussing possible writing of filtering options, it's
not a site I wish to respond to at all.

I am therefore unsubscribing right now.

There is a problem with rev 1.1 motherboards (a sticker on bac near the ISA

heavy I/O load (under all OS's). Currently, Abit does not have a fix, but
there is a possible hardware modification on the www.bp6.com messageboards.

I have the registered version CD. (Quake 1). There's a Quake how-to in the 'how-to's'
(on the Linux cd's and all over the web) that provides flawless guidance. Only trouble
I had was getting my mouse to
work the way I WANT it to. It did work by default, just not the way I like it. The
Quake how-to tells you how to install the game and what you need to download, and how
to unpack and configure what you
downloaded.

If you have the game on cd and want help, lemme know

[newbie] Boot Disk, Instructions for Use?

2000-05-08 Thread John Wenger

Would someone please direct me to online instructions for
using a Mandrake boot disk on Mandrake 7.0? Even better
would be instructions here on how to use one.

I just made a boot disk using

mkbootdisk

where was taken from the output of uname -a.

I rebooted from the floppy, and typed "rescue" at the lilo
prompt,

and got the response:

Kernel Panic: No init found: Try passing init=option to
kernel.

I am not sure what this means, and don't know how to
proceed.

I suspect that I can research this by reading up on lilo,
but booting from a floppy does seem like a newbie kind of
question, right?

I RTFM and found nothing relevant in the Table of Contents
of either the User or Reference Manual for 7.0.

TIA,

John

RE: [newbie] Correction to my earlier post!!!

2000-05-08 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Do you have only one drive in your computer?

If so type "fdisk /dev/hda" from the console prompt in Linux.

I.E.

# fdisk /dev/hda

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 1027.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1027 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device BootStart EndBlocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 126208813+ 6 FAT16
/dev/hda227 1027 8040532+ 5 Extended
/dev/hda52730 32098+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda631 1027 8008371 83 Linux

Command (m for help):

---
(q gets you out safely...)

Notice I typed the "P" command to see what the partitions are on the hard
drive.

If you see a /dev/hda1 with a "System" type of something OTHER than Linux,
Swap or Extended, then your Winblows installation is still there...

Try booting from a DOS floppy disk to double check.

If you can see the C: drive from a DOS floppy boot, you merely need to
modify Lilo to allow you to boot Windows.

If on the otherhand you see a Swap, Linux or Extended entry for /dev/hda1,
then you have overwritten your Windows installation while installing
Linux/Mandrake.

RE: [newbie] Can't Install

2000-05-08 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

If you have your CD set up on the IDE channel, either Master or Slave on
Channel 0 or 1, Mandrake -SHOULD- detect it.

Note however that there are a few "generic" CD_ROM's which do not identify
themselves as such.

Mandrake will be unable to detect these as CD devices.

This is a problem with the hardware, NOT with Mandrake, as the device is not
identifying itself as a CD-ROM...

This sounds like what you are seeing...

RE: [newbie] Modem Help

2000-05-08 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

You don't need "drivers" if it not a winmodem.

Merely set up the modem on a COM port, either COM1 or COM2 to make things
easier for you...

If you have on board serial ports on the motherboard, you might have to
disable one in Bios... then set the modem to use the same one.

It is preferable to set the modem up for COM2.

If you have done all of this, then use Drakconf to set the symbolic link
from the actual device to the modem...

I.E.

/dev/ttyS1 ---> /dev/modem for COM2:

or

/dev/ttyS0 ---> /dev/modem for COM1:

That's it.

[newbie] CD-RW Support problem/?...URGENT

2000-05-08 Thread Michael

I just completed a telephone order for a
PANASONIC CW 7585 cd burner; as an after thought i asked if it was
supported by Linux. They said they didn't know- so i asked them to hold
it while i queried y'all.

Does anyone know if i can actually use this unit(cuz they probably
didn't hold it)??

I have a 500mhz amd k62
128megs(soon to be 256)
8.5 gig

TIA,
-michael-

try switching to another console, and login in a root and try

ksnapshot -display 127.0.0.1

it might work...

Re: [newbie] Have someone used Hamcom Word?

2000-05-08 Thread Andrew Scotchmer

Hi Eduardo,

I have just installed it today and have been looking around. From what I have seen the
only scripts that the keyboard supports is english (roman) and the korean / chinese /
japanese writing. Sorry I can not be of more help.

To be honest I am not too impressed with it. Maybe when an approved version comes
out it will have a wider range of fonts. Also when I load up a page from my working
directory it insists on placing some korean writing at the top of the document and
sometimes in between.Do you have the same problem or have you fixed it.

If it is a motherboard with a VIA chip-set and you installed a Athlon
CPU there are anywhere from 2 to 4 BIOS patches that you need to install. I
was lucky with mine its manufacture date was recent enough that all the
patches were on the included CD.

RE: [newbie] CD Rom not accessible

2000-05-08 Thread Ron Greer

Well, it depends on what all you have in your system.
/dev/hdd is used for the secondary slave device you have installed.
Is there any chance that it may be /dev/hdc or /dev/hdb ?
Also, check to see if maybe it's already mounted somewhere (do a 'df' and
see if you see /dev/hdx anywhere [with the exception of probably hda])
I'm also assuming this is an IDE cdrom...
If not, you may try mounting /dev/scd0 or /dev/sg0 (scsi cdrom and scsi
generic respectively).

Thanks for all of your help and quick responses!!!
The /dev/hdd doesn't work at all for any type of disk. I've tried music
cd,
linux-mandrake 7.0 install cd, and a dos cd, none work with /dev/hdd.
The /dev/cdrom mount I spoke of before accesses the floppy drive. I
just don't understand what's going on.

My previous post:
On my first boot into the system, there were 2 problems:
1.) I noticed that LILO only gave me two optons:

- dos
The 2 choices should be changed to:

Sorry about the mistake. I was in a frantic mood after realizing that LILO
didn't have an option for dos.

So please help!!! Thanks to all who already replied!

I'm posting this using SuSE 6.4 (I've run Mandrake 7.02, on my main machine,
since it was released) and I'm surprised that you found it easier. I've tried
every recent distro on my back-up machine and Mandrake 7.02 is still the
easiest to install and configure.

Re: [newbie] Installed SuSE yesterday

2000-05-08 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Carolyou haven't given us (the folks who try to help here)
a chance to assist you in fixing your problem. You just
dashed in here and announced that you were switching to SuSE,
because Mandrake doesn't support your video card (which is
totally untrue). How about a better (more detailed)
description of your problem with your x configuration, so we
can help you to get Mandrake running?

I for one am not here to read about how happy you are with
SuSE. If you "gave up" then why are you still here? If you
haven't given up then let's see if we can fix the problem.
You've seen KDE now, so you can uninstall SuSE and reinstall
Mandrake, so we can get on with it :-)

Alan

P.S. A wild guess might be that you have a monitor that
doesn't have correct synch figures in the data base and we
might need to use another monitor selection (or enter the
synch rates manually) to get things working for you.

Well, The rtl8139 driver is not working at all. This is also funny because I

When I load the epic100 driver he displays the correct IRQ and IO address.

Something else I could check?

[newbie] Can't Install

Hi,
I am new to the world of Linux. I just purchase LINUX-Mandrake 7.0 deluxe
and it tells me to install from the floppy. I am attempting to setup my
machine to duel boot(Linux / Win 98). It does not recognize my cd rom and I
can't go any furhter. It asks me whether I have a SCSI or Other. I choose
other because I have and IDE. It then shows me a list of manufactures, my
brand is not listed. I chose the last option which said ide... and it asked
me for a module. I have a generic brand IDE cd rom (Brand Name: AFREEY
Speed: 50X) I have a ASUS motherboard Pent III 550mhz with 128mg ram. Your
immediate help will be greatly appreciated.

Type netconf at a root prompt.
You can also do it with linuxconf.

Or if you are new to linux and like mental masturbation, you can do it
with the "modprobe", "ifconfig" and "route" commands. It's really
interresting and instructive, but it may sound like a waste of time if you
don't want to spend several hours understanding how it all works.

I agree. I have Freesco running as my gateway right now, and I have an
old terminal set up so I can watch the dns queries out of the corner of
my eye as I am working in my computer/electronics/reloading/hobby room.
Definitely has came in handy. If I see a disturbing site name come up,
I check it out. If it is objectional, well, that was the last time
anyone in this household will ever see it on my network. Perhaps a bit
high-handed, but then I am the one responsible for making sure that
society gets a quality product in another 4 yrs, and I think this will
help steer towards that path.

[newbie] urgente!!!

2000-05-08 Thread Eduardo Arauz

a .sh file is a shell-script. .gz.sh means: it's compressed (.gz) and it's
executable from the shell (.sh) --> a self-extracting archive I suppose. Anyway,
to run it, simply do this:

  sh filename.gz.sh

or make it executable (chmod +x filename.gz.sh) and then run it like this:
  ./filename.gz.sh

and it should start installing.

All I know about this card is that I ran it as a "ne-2000 compatible" last

Hey all,

I just got my Mandrake PowerPack and just completed the installation
process. I installed linux onto a system that was running Windows 2000
Advanced Server. The system has 2 hard disks and I used the Drax
"recommended" mode to do my install. I didn't get a chance to pick which
hard drive to install linux on (so I'm assuming it installed it on the same
hard drive as my Windows OS).

On my first boot into the system, there were 2 problems:
1.) I noticed that LILO only gave me two optons:
- linux
- dos
HUH?! Oh GOD!! Where is my other OS??! I'm going to cry now. Where is
the "dos" option in LILO? Doesn't LILO detect a Windows OS and include that
as one of it's options? Someone please help me with this one.

2.) (as if it weren't bad enough already!) My KDM fails to start!!! I got
the regular console login. The X configuration went fine during the install
process. I get this error:

kdm: error in loading shared libraries: libqt.so.1: cannot open shared objet
file: No such file or directory.

HUH?! In fact, when I do log on via console mode, if I let my system sit
there for several minutes without doing anything, the same error pops onto
the screen again. What is causing this problem? Can someone at least point
me toward a direction? Or do I have to format, reinstall Windows 2000 and
all the servers that ran on it and burn my Mandrake A!

Sniff sniff,

Peter

not sure if i can tell you how to fix your kdm issue but i can tell you that
lilo recognizes all versions of dos and windows as being dos. you should
still be able to boot win 2000 from lilo.

Are you using the authentication that your ISP requires - either PAP or
CHAP ?

Re: [newbie] OT - Quake

2000-05-08 Thread flupke

No problem. There you have :
ftp://ftp.lokigames.com/pub/patches/quake3/linuxq3apoint-1.16n.x86.run

And not far from there, you also have the patches for the other loki games
(heretic, railroadtycoon II, myth2, ...)
You d/l the patch, run it (as root if you want to install the stuff in
/usr/local/games/quake3), then you replace the quake3/baseq3/pak0.pk3 by
the one that stands on your Quake CD. Note that if don't have enough place
or don't want to waste it, you can just make a symlink ;-) (but it takes
more time to load the game and the arena's, of course)
If your GL drivers are correctly installed, you just type :
cd /usr/local/games/quake3
./quake3
And then... YOU FRAG, YOU SHOOT, YOU KILL! :-)))

Re: [newbie] network configuration on boot

2000-05-08 Thread flupke

If netconf doesn't do it automatically (but it should!), add the line :
   alias eth0 3c509
in your /etc/conf.modules file to have the module automatically loaded by
kerneld.

You can add the other lines in your /etc/rc.d/init.d/network file.
