I entered my email address in the user field and now it apparently
accepts that however I
still cannot connect. Looking at my kppp log it now contains a line that
tells me my
password is incorrect whereas it did not before. I have double checked my
password
and it is correct and all lowercase as it should be.

[newbie] OpenGL for NVidia cards?

2000-05-09 Thread Nickolay Belostotsky

Hi all!

Just read the Quake II how-to. I'm wondering, why in Linux OpenGL is only
for 3dFX cards, where it is (IMHO) poorly implemented, and not for NVidia's
Riva TNT2? I have the latter, that's why it's so frustating... Is there any
plans to make OpenGL for TNT2?

If the question is stupid, I'm sorry. :-)

Thanks,

I use freewwweb as my provider (one of them) and have never had any problems
(though they are not as reliable I think as www.worldshare.net ). Are you
sure you have your user name and password configured right. Remember that
the user name for freewwweb is your email address, for example
[EMAIL PROTECTED] It will not work unless all of this is in the user field.

If this is not your problem, let now and we'll take it from there.

Yes, it is very simple, I guess.
First do a chmod +x configure to make it executable.
Then it should work. If then it still doesn't you may need to log in as
root, do the same chmod and see if it works then.

[newbie] freewwweb

I am trying to use 'freewwweb' as my linux ISP. I have entered both of
my DNS numbers and
I believe I have KPPP configured correctly. I have previously used KPPP
with a regular
ISP with no problem. However as soon as I connect I get a PAP
authentication error. I have confirmed both my user name and password
with 'freewwweb' and they are correct. I might
also add the I have tried using windows dial-up networking and I get a
similar response ---
it tells me to verify my password and try again. Does anyone have any

Well, for starters, if you got the boxed version of Mandrake, you may
have the rpm version already. check out the 5th and 6th cd's, if you've
got them. If not, check out www.rpmfind.net to find 'em. If you are
bound and determined to use the tarball you downloaded, then put it in
/tmp, then from that directory, type 'tar xvfz some.file.name.tar.gz'
This will cause some text to fly by; the stuff at the far left is the
new directory that the tarball unpacked into. For more information, try
'info tar' or 'info gzip'. P.S. I think I'd recommend the rpm files,
as I found a cool one on the CD's that basically acts as the plugin that
allows netscape under linux to view pdf files inline.

Hope this helps,

Monte

Kpackage is for .rpm files.  For the tar.gz file you
will need to run
tar -xzvf
This will untar the file and from there you will need to run the install
for the linux version of AR.  Do you know xpdf can also read .pdf
files and is packaged with linux?

each! a 66mhz FSB is not very practical for
two proc's sharing the same bandwidth.

I used the abit BP6 for about a month, its a
unreliable piece of shit and I would recommend
you RUSH it back to where you got it and
get an RMA, quick!

Type "tar -xzvf the_file_name.tar.gz". That should create a new directory that

[newbie] Netatalk and Mandrake 7

2000-05-09 Thread David Okerson

I would greatly appreciate help getting netatalk to work with Mandrake 7.
Netatalk is *NOT* included on the ISO image; I therefore downloaded the
version referenced on the Mandrake WWW site. It appeared to install
correctly, and actually runs. However, it seems to NOT properly use the
password file, perhaps because of the shadow password system. That is, I
can connect as a Guest user, but not as any named user requiring a
password.

Thank you very much,
David

RE: Re(4): [newbie] need KDE login screenshots....

2000-05-09 Thread Anthony Huereca

That doesn't seem to be working for me. I hit to switch to a
new terminal, and then I login. Then when I type "startx -- :2" it gives me a
list of the options, which I figure is because I never really give it an option
with the space between the "-" and ":". So, I then tried "startx --:2", but
then that gives me this:

--
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages

Then it hangs, and I have to hit c to bring back the prompt. And no I do
not have a ".XO-lock" file in /tmp. The same exact thing also happens with
"startx --: 2" or "startx -- : 2" (notice the slight changes in spacing) if
that would affect it any. I know I've gotten two X sessions going at once
before, but apparently I didn't do it the way you instructed.

[newbie] Installing SCSI card

2000-05-09 Thread Patrick Hermanto

I've been trying to get this SCSI card installed completely for a long time. I am
just being introduced to Linux and only know how to navigate and edit files. I don't
really understand the relationship between all the different conf files. I really
need detailed instructions on how to do this. I am using Mandrake 6.1. I inserted a
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller connected to an AIWA Travan 20 Tape Drive.
1. When linux boots up, no SCSI host detected.
2. I entered "modprobe aic7xxx" Which seemed to have done something. When I look at
the "dmesg" I see that the Card is found and the tape drive as /dev/st0
3. How do I may sure it is working? I entered "mt -f /dev/st0 status" and I get some
info on the tape drive.
4. However when I try any other tape command: mt -f /dev/st0 erase" or "mt -f /dev/st0
rewind" I get the command line again and nothing happened. I just want some movement
on the tape so I know it's working.
5. Can someone give me a bunch of commands to try. This is a new tape, so I don't
care it it is formatted or erased.

6. One other thing. When the machine is rebooted, the module is gone and I have to
do the modprobe again. Anyway of installing the module during bootup. I tried
"depmod" but I just am not getting the command structure right. I don't quite
understand what all the options mean. So if someone can help me out here also.

I appreciate any help for this newbie.

[newbie] Executing files from Xterm

2000-05-09 Thread Daryl Schuck

I just installed Mandrake Linux 7.0, and it seems great except for a
very fundamental and frustrating problem.

This is a very simple vanilla unix command line question, but it is not
behaving like the unix I'm used to.

When I select a subdirectory (e.g.: /home/ted/devapp/bin/), I am able
to see a script called configure that I want to run.

Now, I can see the file is there by ls . , e.g.:

[root@schucky bin]# ls -l configure
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 962 May 2 19:28 configure*

[root@schucky bin]# ls -l ./configure
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 962 May 2 19:28 ./configure*

but I get an error when I try to execute it from the same prompt:

[root@schucky bin]# ./configure
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

Now what could I possibly be missing? The file is there, but when I try
to execute it from the command like I get this bizarre 'not found'
error.

I have *got* to be missing something very fundamental...please clue me
in.

Thanks!!!

We're talking about two different filtering mechanisms here. The
mandrake filter prevents people from start flamefests regarding joining
and unjoining.

The original thread was about a "seven dirty words" filter at a
subscriber's site. Both filters exists.

it appears that i am lucky, my isp tells me that i have no limit so i
guess won't be causing any bounce backs, still a strange phenomenon
though, i leave messages on the server as a backup for the number of
times i have to reinstall (i'm lazy i know) but having joined a few
lists it's getting a little unfeasible,
i'll just have let them go.

[newbie] DVD-Rom not working

2000-05-09 Thread gmr

I installed Mandrake 7.0 on my P3-500 with all
sorts of goodies and somehow managed to get everything working except the ATAPI
Sony DVD-Rom drive.  I found that the 2.2.14 kernel does not yet support
DVDs but I thought that it could still access it as a CD-Rom drive.

During boot-up, I get a status message that
it's an unknown device.  The message spells out that it's an ATAPI drive
type 17 but it can't access it.  The strange part is that this is the same
drive that I used to boot up the Mandrake Linux CD and run the install and
the install even added a mount entry for it
in /etc/fstab.

Any ideas on what might be going wrong
here?

Thanks in advance,
Glen

Hmm... one of the generic ways to just change video resolutions and test it
is by typing:
'Ctrl-Alt-+' for increasing resolutions, and 'Ctrl-Alt--' for decreasing
resolutions.
DrakConf should allow you to change your resolution from there also. If
none of these options work, let me know and I'll give you some better help
on modifying the config files.
You might also try running 'xf86config' from the console and try
re-configuring X.
I hope this helps!

Okay, you have the same video card I do which means you have a serious
problem. The x server that works with the Sav 4 card is the generic svga.
The svga server has crashed my mandrake system since day 1. But please feel
free to try and let me know the results so I can figure out if I have some
other type of problem. You need to go to the command prompt and type
xfree86config. This is a simple text based setup program and should be self
explanatory. when you get to the part where you choose video card, there
should be a listing for s3 sav4. Choose it and continue on. Email me and let
me know what the results are. Whenever I run x and try to log out my system
crashes. There have been several individuals who have reported this bug to
mandrake (so I know its not just me) but they have still not done anything
about it (that's why I;ve gone back to RedHat). Maybe someday they will do
something about it. There is also a driver for creative's sav4 and it works
great under redhat but I have yet to get it to work on any other distro
(I've tried SuSE, mandrake, and storm).

that statment that CD-R are mounted diferently is not true, because
before i made the upgrade to my PC, i was using mandrake 6.1 and have no
problems mounting all file system ( linux see the CD-R like a regular
CD-Rom at mounting time).. but now the problem is that it says that it is
not a valid directory and cant no show files!!

Re: [newbie] No freakin clue?!?!?

2000-05-09 Thread Caleb McKay

I found the same problem when I first tried Mandrake 7 (CD

I had previously tried RedHat 5.2 but none of my cheap PC's

Re: [newbie] Linux Mandrake 7.0 with Packard Bell Monitor

2000-05-09 Thread tbelding

Hi,

Here's some more detail:

Video Card: (output from SuperProbe)
Super-VGA
Chipset - Silicon Integrated Systems 5597/5598 (PCI Probed)
Memory - 512 Kbytes
RAMDAC - SiS built-in DAC w/clock (with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit
mode))

Monitor: (off the back...haven't tracked down the manual yet)
Packard Bell
Model #: 20245
100-240v
50-60 Hz
1.5A

Does it seem like I should be able to configure it? I haven't been able
toeven edited the file generated by xconfigurator after creating it to
change to specifically that Hz range...still didn't work...do I need to install
another X server other than what was the default from the install?

Another odditythe GUI install comes up really nice and looks really good...I
was definitely surprised after that happened and then I get such an ugly X
session.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Tim.

Jimoh, I didn't realize that you're using supermount.
That line in your /etc/fstab file is not correct, it should be
like the one below:

/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom
0 0

and of course the softlink /dev/cdrom should link to /dev/hdd

How do you mean providing internet access to linux. if you are talking of having a
shell account I think you will be lucky to find one, but if you are after just a normal
account then any ISP can be used with linux, just like it can with windoze.
I'm with world on-line which after changing my phone line to theirs give me free dial
up costs so no big bills for me :^). I've also heard that BT are starting something
similar for a tenner a month.

Where abouts are you. maybe their is a linux user group nearby that can offer more
help. They are listed in the new magazine Linux Format in WHSmiths.

Alan,

I don't understand your problem with Carol. She actually did post the
specs on her monitor at one point--I remember seeing them. She's a newbie
to Linux, just like others on this list. There are plenty of obfuscatory
descriptions on this list. I've never seen you complain to the rest of the
list about it before. It would be nice if you kept things a little less
accusatory.

'ChineseWall Job' reports:

TXU automatically screens all e-mail for inappropriate subject matter (i.e.
material that is discriminatory, hateful, vulgar, pornographic,
sexually-explicit, or obscene). This e-mail contains information that is
considered inappropriate for the business environment and has been logged and

Special NOTE: I added the *'s to the offending word (maybe I won't get another
slap on the wrist for re-sending vulgar words). This mail filter seems to be
attached to someone's email from Texas. So maybe a recent suscriber
(<--intentional typo to evade the Mandrake taboo list :)) is the culprit for
these filter bounces.

I think that I can say, with 99% certantity, that the filtering "problem"
which occured is connectted to Mandrake or to this list.
Did anyone take the time to go to www.tux.com before becoming outraged? I
did. TUX is a Utility company. They sell electricity, natural gas and other
related products and services. So what we have is someone on this list who
works for Tux and is sending and receiving newbie while at work, and Tux is
perfectly within their rights to filter all incoming and out going e-mail
their employees receive while at work.

You'll have better luck if you move the modem to COM1 or COM2.

This avoids potential IRQ conflicts on your system.

Michael,
That burner should work OK. If it is SCSI there won't be a problem. If
it is IDE you will probably have to turn on SCSI emulation in the kernel
(if it isn't already). I think all burners should work ok with possible
exceptions of the TDK VeloCD and an external USB burners.

Marc
ttyS3 is the right setting but the modem is on Conn 5 not Conn 4.
Did you run # cat /proc/pci ? It will give you a listing of all the PCI
cards on your computer and you will need the the IRQ and I/O listed under
Communication Controler to enter 2 more commands and to edit your rc.serial
file.
If you have not done this respond back and I will give you detailed info.

Carol,

A quick search reveals that ChineseWall is an email filtering program and that TXU
is the Texas Utilities Co.

The most likely explanation is that someone at TXU is on the linux-Mandrake mail
list and their company is filtering / scanning their incoming email and then
sending the originator a warning / notice.

I know, sounds childish but that's business. They didn't single you out, they are
just being paranoid.

Note to whomever is out there from TXU, chew on this.

XXX tra care has been taken not to offend. This author fully supports anti -
pornography efforts and has on occasion pulled the plug from the offensive unit.
Perhaps you might consider re-evaluating some of your catch phrases or at least
review your "archive" log and send apologies to those such as Carol who were truly
offended.

Re: [newbie] GPGP

2000-05-09 Thread John Couturier

I don't know the answer the your problem but you may want to go out to
http://geheimnis.sourceforge.net and try geheimnis. This is what I use and it is very
nice, I believe the one your using is the Gnome PGP GUI.

Roach,
Type X-configurator at the prompt in command mode and you will be take you
step by step through the procedure of setting up your vid card monitor and res.
I had the large icons when I first installed even though I had 800x600 res. but with
changing the refresh rate I was able to get the look I wanted.

What version of Mandrake are you running? I think DrakeConf should be able
to tell you what resolution you are running.

Andrew,
Sorry to be so long before replying to your email. I've got an Epson 740 running
beautifully on my Mdk 6.1 system. I got a driver for the 740 from
http://lcewww.et.tudelft.nl/~haver/linux/epson.html. If you're still having some
trouble, you might give this driver a shot.

Re: [newbie] watch what you say on this list

2000-05-09 Thread Michael R. Batchelor

This "filtering" isn't done by Mandrake, but by someone's site who is
subscribed to the list. I've gotten a couple back from the same site
myself, related to some oddball word they considered "forbidden". Just
blow them off as paranoid. They're free to run their site any way they
feel.

I think the Mandrake site archives all the maillist messages. But not
all sites archive all their mail. We sure don't. The warning message
only comes back to the person who originally sent the message, not to
the list, so they aren't really singling out anyone other than the poor
sucker on the list who isn't getting these filter messages.
