When I try to let lothar configure my sound card it says that it can't
configure it because it is an ALSA card. I tried configuring it with

tell what values they are from linux? Is there any other way to configure
the sound card? And what are the ALSA files that come with RPM contrib CD

Thanks for any help,

I can not recall whether this exact thing is possible, but
the fetchmail documentation is pretty good. First find
fetchmail and install it, so that you will have the
documentation to read. Also, I think the docs are online at

Hi ~

Can I just say, I'm a newbie to Linux and I'm a home-user, not a Sys Admin.

But I think you'll find that if you su to root, cd to /var/spool/mail/ and type:

   chmod -R 777 *

Then that should solve the problem. For details of what this is doing, see the man

Re: [newbie] Printing man pages

2000-05-12 Thread Rial Juan

hmm... Let's see what "man man" says about this...

-t Use /usr/bin/groff -Tps -mandoc to format the manual page, passing the
output to stdout. The output from /usr/bin/groff -Tps -mandoc may need to
be passed through some filter or another before being printed.

so...
  man -t manpage > /dev/lp0
or
  man -t manpage | lpr
or perhaps even
  man -t manpage | /usr/bin/groff -Tps -mandoc > /dev/lp0
or
  man -t manpage | /usr/bin/groff -Tps -mandoc | lpr
might do the trick.

Are you ready to risk wasting a couple of pages of paper to try? ;-)

ps: it looks like crap on screen, and I don't have any clue what it'll give on
paper since I'm at home where I'm stuck with a win-printer. So experiment. Also
the manpage is pretty unclear about it, and since I can't experiment with it
right now I suggest you also take a look at the man-howto (if it exists). I'd do
it for you, but not with this piece of cr@!* 14k4 modem.

Re: [newbie] Question about install Mandrake

2000-05-12 Thread GAPrichard

Depending on the age of the drive: are you operating this HDD in 66MHz
mode? If so, use WD's utility to turn it off [Linux will install on the
33MHz speed this will drop down to]. Next, since you said you have an
overlay, you have to boot from the overlay as it is installed on the HDD,
pause it just after the overlay is loaded (it pauses very briefly for this
purpose, or there will be other instructions), then continue the boot with
your chosen floppy. The exact method varies depending on the particular
overlay and what version of it you have (I hope you have the documentation
for the overlay, or you may end up talking to the WD technical support
people).
As a former computer technician, the idea of running Linux from an
overlay is frightening [and I didn't know it was possible] -- run ANYTHING
that way only if you have no other choice (i.e. a motherboard limitation);
I've seen what can happen.

Re: re. [newbie] StarOffice & Mandrake7

2000-05-12 Thread GAPrichard

It seems to be scrambling the configuration of Xwindows itself.
On 5/4 I wrote:
"After 6 full installs, I now know what was corrupting my X. It was not
desktop configuration, hdparm, video setup (as generics), or any of the other
RPMs I loaded from Mandrake 7 Deluxe, (modem & sound not configured) --Star
Office so corrupted X that it froze Linux during boot, while trying to switch
over to graphical login. I had made many changes during the install, and
fully recreated everything (except for the one thing I was testing) when
reloading. During only one iteration was I able to get a (frozen) console
screen, which showed these messages: bad length in Geometry, output file
/var/tmp/server-0.xkm removed, couldn't load XKB keymap, Font Trans Socket
UNIX Connect: can't connect: errno-111, failed to set default font path
1unix/:-1, and fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'. The
Star Office RPM appeared to run and end normally."
As I indicated in the message you responded to, I have continued testing
with an extremely simple configuration, and I have learned that it's the
combination of WordPerfect and StarOffice that is causing the problems. I
have no other problems (that I know of, since sound is still not configured,
and my modem was found and works however no programs are setup actually use
it yet--I'v spent so much time with this...). Install does not correctly
detect my graphics card, however what it installs is completely servicable
except for the low refresh rate. I believe when video and monitor are
correct I have the same result (frankly I've done this so many times I can't
remember). I'm glad to know that these two can co-exist -- would the fact
that I haven't gotten a registration number for Word Perfect make any
difference [I've been spending all of my time reading "newbie" and doing
these installs]? I wouldn't think so.

Re: [newbie] my winmodem/wish it was a linmodem

Yay, I am writing the list from Netscape Mail within Linux Mandrake. The modem
worked the very first
time I told it to dial, but I did have to reconf kppp as my settings were still
for ttyS3. After I connected to my ISP, I was unable to get any mail or browse
with Netscape, as I was/am facing a ppp0 challenge, and I did not
have correct configs for my DNS and had to edit /etc/resolv.conf to set that in
a working order.

Somewhere along the way I messed around with another switch and I got
disconnected and then my
modem would not dial up again, just silence, I'm sure you can just imagine the
look on my face. :) None the less I persevered and located the switch which now
escapes me again, but it works, it was in netconf though. I will write more on
that in short order.

[newbie] Browser of Choice

2000-05-12 Thread Bob

When I clicka link in Mail Client the KFM file manager opens. A nice little
browser, just can't access it from my desktop.

What I would like is to be able to select Netscape as my browser of choice.

When I attempt to invoke Netscape's mail the following error message appears:

"Can't move mail unable to write to /var/spool/mail/Bob Permission denied.

It continues:
For the internal movemail method to work, we must be able to lock files. On
many systems, this is best accomplished by making that directory be mode 01777.
If that is not not possible, then an external setgid/setuid movemail program
must be used.

All I can say is HUH???

Your advise please

I was just reading that before I logged on. Thank you.
In which order did you partition your drive? That is, did originally
have a copy of Windows on your computer?
Or, did you partition, install Windows and then Linux?

Just curious.

Denis Are you the daddy? -)
then maybe you can solve this small problem that I've asked on the

"Hi,
I'm using MDK 7.1 beta
I have an MS intellimouse ,ps/2.
I would like to have imwheel start automatically, or even be able to start
it as a regular user (It worked fine in v.7.02). The only way I seem to get
the wheel working is to change to 'su' in a terminal ,and type imwheel -k
and then it starts. I've tried changing the permissions but still no luck as
anyone other than the superuser starting this process.
**I have asked this question before, but didn't get a response."

I don't think you do something wrong. I assume that the packages that were
installed were compiled with a different character set loaded than you
have on your system. Happens to me a lot also, but as long as things work
fine I don't care. (Should I??)

Try just "xinit -- :1" or "X -- :1"
If these work, then there must be something wrong in your startx script.
If this is the case, check the way that it passes the arguments when
starting the server.

That is true. And, I think that I will go for door number 1 and purchase
Partition Magic(full version).
It can always come in handy). I have all of my CDs, including NT4

In the meantime, I am reading The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook,
and documentation provided by MandrakeSoft.

And, I fired up an older computer - Dell Dimension XPS 166 with WIN98.
While I'm waiting for Partition Magic to arrive, I'm considering
practicing
the partitioning and installation of Mandrake 7.0 on it first.

does anyone know of a free isp that will be friendly to a linux user? i
just downloaded the altavista free isp on my roommates computer, in hopes of
being able to set it up on my linux box. the only thing i was missing was
the dns numbers. so i called tech support and asked. but they were all
bastards and kept telling me that if i have windows 95,98, nt or 2000 that i
can run it. and i kept telling them that all i need is the dns numbers.
and they said that if i have windows, i can run it. and i told them that
all i needed was the dns numbers. and it went on like that for a while.
damn windows trained monkeys.

The second, I was under the impression that he just basically wanted another

Better way to go is to use sudo, or at least:

Re: [newbie] 3COM, @Home Service and Linux Mandrake 7.0

The C drive partition is FAT with 2 Gig.
The D drive partition is FAT with 2 Gig.
The E drive partition is NTFS with about 16 Gig.

The computer came from the factory with NT4 and three partitions.

The full version of PM allows the user to create and move your partition
in NTFS.
The PM that comes with the Mandrake 7.0 is not a full version.

I also noticed a multiple boot OS manager called System Commander 2000
from V Communications.
We use it at work.

Ron/Euniceyou'd better make it 400, as it is set by

If you are lucky enough to own a Voodoo card, just head over to...

and you will find all of the RPMs for device drivers and Glide.

Hope that helps,

Just a stab in the dark, but perhaps adding some more swap space might

Could it be that your config files have changed user? When you run X as
root from your home directory, then you/user can't access the files that
hold the config. Shutting down X rewrites a bunch of files with the logged
in person as owner. Perhaps you could check this...

I agree. But, do to the fact that I layed out some serious cash for my
Dell Dimenison XPSB 733 workstation, I thought that I would experiment
with the partitioning on my other computer. In fact, I am emailing my
messages to you - as I am typing. I was thinking of purchasing System
Commander 2000 from V Communications. It also includes a partitioning
package. Other than the price, does it matter which one I use?

I will be installing Linux Mandrake 7.0 on my Dell Dimension XPS M166
with Windows 98SE, and about 64 MB. of RAM. I have a 10 Gig. drive to
experiment with. It's a lot slower but I wanted to read as much as I can
before partitioning. I keep reading all of these panic emails and it
concerns me.

In reference to the NTFS, I couldn't agree with you more. The 14 Gig. is
a lot of wasted space. I have been using it for storing back ups and
downloads. But, the only item that I am concerned about is losing my
factory preset image file. Apparently, it is located in the NTFS
partition under Z drive, and it's hidden.

Re: [newbie] my winmodem/wish it was a linmodem

2000-05-12 Thread Charles A Edwards

Wade

It's a matter of cost. Winmodems are cheaper than Real modems. 99.9% of
all PCI modems preinstalled in systems are winmodems and 99% of all PCI
modems that you can buy retail are winmodems. There are only 4 that I know
for a fact are not winmodems. If you are running windows winmodems are fine,
but DAMN, as popular and as many users as Linur now has you would think that
manf. would at the least say on their packaging or in the product specs.
that it's a Winmodem and will not work in any OS but Windows.
   Sorry for the rant.
Now as to your question . Once you have the modem connected and boot into
Linux it should automatically see your modem and you want really need to do
anything. You can check it by opening kppp, clicking setup and then device
The box should show
   Modem Device /dev/modem
   Flow Control CRTSCTS
   Line Termination CR/LF
Connection speed 115200 (that's for 56k yours will be lower)

Hmmm... that's a toughie... basically you messed something up :) J/k.
Okay, things I'd look for:
1. Go to /etc/rc.d
2. rgrep -r ppp0 *
3. If something shows up, reply back with what it said (and any more detail
you can give).
4. That obviously didn't work, otherwise you wouldn't still be here.
*sigh*
5. Okay, now umm... let's look around.
6. Did you play with /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-ppp ?
Okay, the numbering scheme is stupid...
Anyway, if you changed that file, you may want to put it back :)
But same would hold true, you probably would have to have played with
ifdown-ppp in the same directory.

Maybe you played with /etc/ppp/ip-up ?
Maybe you forced ppp.o to load?
I don't know Any more input would be helpful!

Hi,

I think this is very minor as I accomplished this while doing initial
configs in my efforts to get my winmodem to dial up a connection.
I have inadverdently tweaked something with my ppp0 configuration as when I
boot to Linux and when I shut down Linux I get an error on my loading ppp0
and my shutting down ppp0 on the check list it is the only config that
comes up *RED*.

All of the remaining list items get a *GREEN* [ok] both booting and
shutting down. As did ppp0 prior to my configs on my winmodem.

RE: [newbie] my winmodem/wish it was a linmodem

2000-05-12 Thread Ron Greer

Easiest way is to delete /dev/modem
then ln -s /dev/modem /dev/ttyS
The 'number of modem' property listed above is just which com port it's
on... remember Linux starts counting at 0 (Which everyone should)...
So Com1 is ttyS0
   Com2 is ttyS1 ...etc.
Whichever Com port it's set to, just specify it there.

Hi List,

Well I sure am glad to see that I have not been alone in my journey through
'winmodem' land. Yes in fact be it well known by all that if you have a
'Creative Modem Blaster Flash 56 PCI DI5630' you have a 'winmodem'. S*cks
to think that a person can go and purchase a top of the line system from a
local top of the line computer store (several thousand dollars worth) and
it comes equipped with a 'winmodem' even after telling the salespeople that
I was planning to install Linux.

It just sounds like MONOPOLY to me, but that is only me I guess. After
being shocked into the realization that MS had somehow managed to persuade
modem/driver manufacturers to only use winmodems and that way *ALL* new
computer systems everywhere would be dependent on MS to make their modems
work.

I was preparing to take my system in for a new modem and I realized I had
an older external modem attached to an old retired system
that was not in use. I thought hmm, it is external will it even work with a
winmodem installed? I have plugged it in, installed the dos drivers and off
I went onto the internet. It is a bit slower 33/6 but as I am currently on
a dial up I don't think that really matters that much.

My number one question is, what is the best way to tell Linux to look for a
new external modem? Or how do I reconfigure Linux to recognize and use my
external modem?

Re: [newbie] named service and mandrake 7 ????

Do you already have an account with this ISP or are you trying to
estalish a new account?
If you already have an account open kppp, select setup, New, then enter
your connection name, and the access number. Click OK then click OK at the
configuration screen, Next enter your Login ID and your password, click
connect and if your modem is setup you will be on the internet.
If you wish to establish an account with a new ISP you can:
   1) Do it from another OS were you can download the ISP software.
   2) Sign-up at the ISP's website if they offer that option.
   3) Open your account by telephone.
Linux does not have a "Network Connection Wizard". YOU have to supply it
with all the necessary information.

Hi Adam,
I think you need a Multidrop mailbox for that.
This works as this:

you have an account somewhere that lets you receive mail on
@accountname.something. Depending on the you can
make fetchmail determine where incoming mail has to go.

Re: [newbie] Parental Control

2000-05-12 Thread Rial Juan

Hmm. just adding my two cents:

I've been watching porn since I was like... uhhm... 6 or so. Ok, at that age I
didn't understand what it was all about, except that married people did those
kind of things, but anyway... It hasn't made me a less responsible, or more
perverted human being. As a matter of fact, I kind of dislike porn nowadays,
since I regard most of it as cheap filth. Some porn goes beyond the average "get
two ugly people in bed and film the action as explicitly as possible" style that
governs the market, but that kind of "quality porn" is scarce.

But anyway, porn right now can't really attract my attention anymore, and I
usually even change the channel when yet another stupid cheap erotic movie is
playing. Not to say I don't enjoy sex, but just not all the cheap rubbish they
show on TV, or what's to be found on all major XXX-sites.

Of course I can only speak for myself, but I regard myself as the living proof
that watching porn doesn't make you a pervert. So why bother about your kiddies
becoming perverts just 'coz they watch porn on the web? Ok, at first they'll be
very interrested, they'll download tons of pics and movies, even print some out,
share with their friends, and probably play with themselves while watching it.
So what? It's just a stage they have to pass trough, and we all know that kids
in their puberty find their way to porn one way or another anyway, or do you
think my parents realized how much of that shit I have looked at in my life?

But ask yourselves this question: what do you prefer? A 13-year old kid that
watches tons of porn, and experiments with himself while watching it, only to
realise when he matures that it's actually cheap rubbish, and then when he's
passed that stage can enjoy a normal healthy sex-life with his partner of
choice, or do you prefer creating a human being that will engage in a
relationship so insecure about intimity because he's always regarded it as
something of a taboo, and even something evil? Probably even an individual who's
been so frustrated all of his life because he always heard stuff about it, but
never really knew what it was all about. This individual will never enjoy sex in
his whole life. Oh yes, he'll _have_ sex, but he won't _enjoy_ it, odds are he
won't be able to keep a decent relationship for long either, since he'll be one
hell of a screwed up person (ok, I'm going into extremes here, but you get my
point).

I don't believe in forcing porn upon young kids just to have them realise the
facts of life, but I also don't believe in this rigid censorship which has
ruined more lives troughout the years than drugs has. I believe that when a
6-year old kid comes asking you what words like "vagina" and "condom" mean, you
should have an open conversation in which the kid doesn't get the impression
it's something of a taboo, or evil/perverted. Of course, if I had a 6-year old
daughter and she came up to me asking "Daddy, what does 'sodomize' mean?", I
would be baffled at first too, and I don't really know if I would have an answer
for her right away, but then again, it's these moments that make parentship such
a fun job, I suppose. ;-)

Note, I don't have any kids, nor am I married myself. So these opinions are not
the ones of a parent, but the ones of the child of parents who always have had
an open policy about sex and sex-related questions. I turned out quite OK, and
so will many other kids if you give them a chance to prove they're actually more
mature than you'd think. Besides, censorship doesn't work, there's always
classmates who bring porn-mags into school etc... I'd prefer if my future kids
would learn about sex from me and my future wife, than from the other kids in
school.

[newbie] my winmodem/wish it was a linmodem

2000-05-12 Thread mrweb

[newbie] Why doesn't Konsole work?

2000-05-12 Thread Gregg Carrier

Hi,
I can't see anything I type into Konsole. I've tried all the configuration
options to no avail. It's driving me nuts not to be able to resort to command
line when in KDE. I see a cursor about the right distance from the left margin.
It moves when I type. The changes I make are in fact made (ie I type mkdir
testdir not seeing any characters actuallly written to Konsole, but a
directory IS actually made), but it just aint safe to type commands you can't
see. Given that all my other KDE stuff looks pretty good, I assumed it wasn't an
issue with my actual XF86Config or anything. On the other hand, none of
Konsole's settings via the gui help at all. Any ideas? Anyone seen this
problem? Any other software I can install that does what Konsole does (and
hopefully works on my setup ;)

Linux takes care of that. I may step out WAAAY on a limb here, but from
what I've been told, Linux is a self defragmenting OS (Actually, that more

Hello all,

me with a question again.
Sometimes I see a check forced on the harddisk while booting. No problem,
I think that's even good. When I see something like 7.1% non-contiguous,
is there something I should do about it? Or does Linux take care of that
by itself?

Umm okay.
Well, hrm... how to start.
Basically IMHO the easiest way to do this isn't through a GUI.
Go to a terminal, then change directories to /home/Bob/Netscape/caitoo (Or
whereever it unpacked to).
In there, there should be (probably) an INSTALL file... read it.
Generally the standard way to compile things is to run
./configure
make
make install
that should compile everything provided you have Make, gcc, etc installed.
Good luck!

RE: [newbie] Sendmail for multiple users

Hmm... I'd suggest a procmail script.
Have something in the subject or in the headers that you can identify with
each person. procmail rules for this type stuff :)

Subject: [newbie] Sendmail for multiple users

Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to set up sendmail in such a way to
have multiple users uses only one E-Mail address, yet each get their own
separate mail. I have a POP3 mailbox at the university, but the rest of
my family doesn't.and I want to let them use it. However, when it
is delivered to the computer can the incoming mail be differentiated
between my family members. In short I want to split one E-mail address
into fourI have heard that Sendmail/Fetchmail can do this. Can
anybody tell me how to set it up?

Well, heheh, here's a really early tool in development for it :)

Sorry, I haven't played much in this realm.

Subject: [newbie] CD Burning

I FINALLY got a replacement CD-RW today (the old one was defective) and so
now
I"m anxious to use it. However I don't know how exactly to get mp3's into
audio
tracks that you can play on a regular stero. I know you have to convert
them,
and then burn it on a CD-R disc, the only problem is the software. I checked
out freshmeat.net to look for some stuff, but none of them had what I
wanted.
So is there any good GUI CD-Burning utlities that I should check out?
Preferably something that converts the Mp3 and burns it all in one program.
I
did get a burner program to work though (gcombust), but I can't get a mp3
convertor to work for me, so a convertor alone would work too. Thanks.
