[newbie] Netscape 4.7

Need some help getting connected to the internet with Netscape, version
4.7 that came with Linux Mandrake 7.0. When I start Netscape from the
KDE desktop it starts okay but no connect window. I put my ISP and mail
stuff in but no go. I can connect to my ISP (freewwweb.com) with KPPP.
My modem is a USR on com1. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks John..Alex...and Ron..for taking the time to help

I ran the trick without the z and I renamed the file from
tar.gz to .html , I am not sure which did it, but I opened midnight
commander and noticed a folder had been created...one of the two
procedures worked.

The grokking the gimp book opens nicely and is quite a good
piece of work, I can't wait to read it through.

This 29+meg file was the one I was worried about as another
three hour download was not a pleasant thought 8-). I will try the
smaller files tomorrow.

thanks again for the pointers, as always I learned something new.

Don't panic. It's normal. It will do that each time your HD has been

Hi Wade!

You haven't done anything, after a certain times of booting (You can
change it somewhere, but I forgot where) Linux checks it's partitions if
they're still okay. Don't be afraid, you did nothing wrong anbd your
system is just maintaining itself.

Wade,

Linux keeps track of how many times you mount a filesystem, and after a
certain number (not sure how many) It fscks the drive. Its is
preventative maintenance and nothing to be worried about.

Almost all HP printers will work in Linux. If you have not done so
already use Printer Config. and in turn pick each HP DeskJet listed, try to
print a test page, continue untill you find one that will print.
I should have said this first. Be sure your printer is connected via
parrallel port and not USB.
USB connected printers will not have support until 7.2
is released unless you are foolhardy enough to use the beta version.
Before someone fires back I am not saying anyone who uses the beta is
being foolish. I Am saying that beginners should not use it and that
includes me as well as most others on this list.

You have booted Linux often enough to make this automatic disk check kick
in. Windowze only checks the disk when something appears wrong. Linux
keeps track of the number of boots and then always checks the disk. I
don't know if this is something you can avoid, but I know I don't want to
avoid it. Better to check a bit more often than to be sorry!

I think you didn't go wrong anywhere. It's just that Linux counts how many
times it did mount your hard drive, and, after reaching some number (didn't
count, maybe someone knows), it just checks it, to ensure no problems
escaped its eye. Just a profilatics. Don't worry.

(Hope I'm right explaining this :-)

In KDE I can only find key repeat ON and OFF. No setting for a speed. When

This is like asking what the best car is.

If you want a simple, light, stable environment, use Windowmaker.
If you want something very pretty so see, lots of colors and gadgets, use
Gnome.
If you want something real solid, use KDE.
Just about anything runs in everything, is my idea, as long as the right

Just thought this may give you some info, you may know already, when LiLo
boots up all files are set to READ ONLY until boot is completed. This
may be what you are seeing flash on the screen. I have installed
Linux/ManDrake 7.0 Complete about 12 times, trying out different installs
to see which was good for me. Have not had any problems except where I
have made errors in my choices. I have a locally put together CPU AMD K6
II 350meg 32m RAM 3D Sound/w modem & video on the MOBO. My modem is a
Barfmodem, have not been on the NET with Linux yet. Have not given up.
You may have a problem with some part of your H/W check it out very
carefully then try it again. Just for your info I have been working on a
Packard 'Barf' Bell that has had a H/D problem, Conner CFA850A (850m)
H/D, died the other day and am attempting to recover the software if
possible. I have a friend that works on CPU's for living that has 13 1.2
gig Conner H/D's that have died on peoples CPU's he has repaired, I hope
your H/D is NOT a Conner.

Re: [newbie] modifying multiple image settings in /etc/lilo.conf

2000-05-18 Thread Rial Juan

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that, you can set a "default" line in there, and a
"timeout" line as well, so that after the specified timeout it starts up the
default image.

In my example it defaults to the "test" image, after a timeout of 50 (seconds I
believe). But if I want to boot the mandrake secure kernel, I can just type in
"secure" at the lilo prompt. And yes, changes are made as root, and don't forget
to run lilo afterwards.

Good luck.

[newbie] KFM not running

2000-05-18 Thread Romanator

I am also running into problems. I have tried and tried, and I cannot
log on to Netscape in Linux. I keep get messages about the server not
recognized - 'check server name and restart Netscape'. I am using all of
the IP address supplied by provider.

It could be a syntax error. Sorry I could not help. I'm sure there are
experts out there.

following:/opt/Office51/bin/setup 4. smile as the install script
does it's thing.

Hello Rial,

When you have many image sections in your /etc/lilo.conf, do you have to
type in a specific command?
That is, do you have to type anything other than Linux at your boot
prompt? Or. is their another switch to use for another image?
I assume that you do all of your changes at ' root '...

Subject: [newbie] Install from Local Hard
  Drive

I am trying to install mandrake 7 from my local
hard drive. I am trying to go the route of using the Install.bat which starts
up the options of drakeX on restart.

Then once I restart I choose DrakX
  Local

Then it asks for a floppy and I hit
  return

Next it loads up the kernel and I get a prompt
  that says
select partition and Directory holding Linux
Mandrake. I point it to my D: Drive since I have the whole install on that
  drive.

Then I hit return and all I get is a mostly blank
  screen with
Welcome to Linux Mandrake in the upper left hand
corner and a flashing cursor in the lower left hand corner.

There it just stops it keeps blinking I let it
run for about 30 mins and nothing happned.

  Any Advice would be appreciated.

  mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

Yes Alex, I have only a winmodem to access my slow (max 26-4)
connection...I downloaded the files in MS explorer and sucked them up
into Linux through the VFAT hole. first generation W95 with fat16..

Your question indicates to me that this procedure would
introduce errors to the downloaded file? is this a common malady?
is there any way I can repair the breakage or force it to decode even
if it has errors in the format?

I don't like KDE or gnome. I find them too "resource consuming". They can
be usefull for people not wanting to learn how to really use linux. Linux
newbies generally like it, but once they discover how much it wastes
memory and CPU, they change their mind and use the "power" of the
command line.
I usually use blackbox. It's light and fast. Just what I need : a
graphical interface, but no silly unneeded features.

Enlightenment is pretty cool, too, but I fear that E 0.17, with the
integration of efm, will show the same waste of resources as KDE or Gnome.
But what I like in E, it's that, unlike KDE or gnome, it has its own
personality and features. It is not intended to look like Zinblow$.

I think KDE is the best for newbie's who are just trying
to learn linux with a win look and feel. But I use Black

Re: [newbie] High failure rate tar.gz

2000-05-18 Thread John Couturier

I have found that sometimes when I download a file with Netscape it names it with a
.tar.gz extention but in fact it unzipped it when it was downloaded. Try renameing it
to whatever it should be named without the .tar.gz I know that appears strange, but it
has actually worked for me sometimes.

Re: [newbie] Window manager(KDE,Enlightenment,BlackBox...)

2000-05-18 Thread John Couturier

My personal vote is for KDE. I like the symplicity of setup and the way it is
packaged. KDE is in only mabye 10 packages. GNOME is something like 80 and that
makes it hard to keep up to date. Currently I think GNOME only beats KDE in the
themeing arena. But from what I've seen of KDE2 they are in for a fight. I try and
stay out of the liscense debates and phylosophy type arguments. I like KDE because it
fits my style. And the one you like best is the one that fits your style of doing
things.

Re: [newbie] Error when running LILO

2000-05-18 Thread John Couturier

Phil,
I'd have to look at your lilo.conf file to be sure, but maybe your windows
section is pointing to something that doesn't exist. I've attached mine for you to
take a look at. Mine defaults to linux, but to make it default to windows I just
change the "default=" line to "default=windows" which is the label for my windows
setion. I'm guessing you set your windows section up like a linux section and boot.b
does not exist on a windows boot partition.

Re: [newbie] Window manager(KDE,Enlightenment,BlackBox...)

2000-05-18 Thread Necrotica

Careful with this topic - it can sometimes start wars. :)

KDE is too much like Windows for me. Gnome is unnecessarily bloated. I use
straight Enlightenment, mainly because it looks nice and is extremely
configurable (almost too configurable). Very fast and very slick.

[newbie] Install from Local Hard Drive

2000-05-18 Thread Ryan A. Eldridge

I am trying to install mandrake 7 from my local
hard drive. I am trying to go the route of using the Install.bat which starts up
the options of drakeX on restart.

Then once I restart I choose DrakX
Local

Then it asks for a floppy and I hit
return

Next it loads up the kernel and I get a prompt that
says
select partition and Directory holding Linux
Mandrake. I point it to my D: Drive since I have the whole install on that
drive.

Then I hit return and all I get is a mostly blank
screen with
Welcome to Linux Mandrake in the upper left hand
corner and a flashing cursor in the lower left hand corner.

There it just stops it keeps blinking I let it run
for about 30 mins and nothing happned.

Any Advice would be appreciated.
