[newbie] Freewwweb Error

2000-06-10 Thread Marc

I know some people on this list are on freewwweb. That is what I am trying
to use. It has been about roughly 7 hours since I went to the site and
signed up. I put freewwweb.com for the name server. Is that right? I also
use 216.70.64.1 and 216.70.64.2 as my dns servers provided by freewwweb.
When I run kppp in kde I get the dialing out,the sounds but, then I get
"Error The pppd daemon died unexpectedly!" Then is give me a guess for the
reason and that is cause I have the wrong username and password. I know I
have the right account cause I made it not but, 7 hours ago. Can anyone help
me? Thank you

[newbie] lilo troubles again (sorry!)

2000-06-10 Thread root

i'd like to thank dave & charles & the folks that offered help my lilo/
win2000 problem. unfortunately, i'm still having trouble with it :(

i installed the latest lilo build and went into linuxconf and told lilo to use
the linear option (which supposedley takes care of reading larger hard discs
like mine - a 20gig with win2000), I reboot and get the 1's and 0's...i then
edit my /etc/lilo.conf file by adding the lba32 line before my win2000 drive
entry, saved, restarted, and 1's and 0's again. I have tried installing lilo to
the mbr, to the root dir, and to hda1 where my win2000 partition sits on the
1st hdd without any luck; when i run /sbin/lilo in a term it gives the
following output:

Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Added linux
Added windows
Added floppy

so that's it...does anybody have the slightest idea as to why this is not
working? my win2000 part is FAT32, and not NTFS! i've done 4 linux installs on
4 different win95-98 machines without any problems and cant figure this one
out. please, for the love of god somebody help!

p.s. i know there is a NHF at linuxnewbie.org for this, but if there's any way
i can get through this without adding another partition on my win2000 drive
for lilo, it'd be great (if no, then ah wellhell with it - boot with the
floppy :(

[newbie] pop3 server software under mandrake 7.0

2000-06-10 Thread Everette

Hello
A few months ago I installed mandrake 6.1 and I've been playing around
with it.
I installed a pop3 server software called qpopper and it worked great.
Well I just installed mandrake 7.0 a compleate install overwrighting
6.1.
Then I reinstalled qpopper but now it want work.
qpopper seems to be working I can log onto it but it just says no new
messages on server.
So I tryed a few other pop3 server software and get the thing.
Can someone please tell me what to do?

Thanks

RE: [newbie] worthless software innd

2000-06-10 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

In order to set up a news server, you need to obtain a NEWS feed.

This is far different than setting up a NEWS reader (which I'll bet is what
you probably want.).

Most news feeds will COST you big $$$ unless you have a friend who works in
a feeder site...

You can use programs such as SUCK to pull down a group or groups from a nntp
site however. Think carefully before you do this though.

You might want to just use PAN to grab all the new messages in a specific
group. Even then, expect your hard drive to fill after a few days.

If you -REALLY- want to set up a news server and have obtained a feed, then
given that you've spent this much, you might want to invest in one of the
O'Reilly books on News and NNTP.

Did you have any problems loading 7.0?

If not I don't think you will have any problems this time

The rest of the disks will work with the installation disks on 7.1

In linuxconf, I've selected sendmail to start up everytime...

however, everytime I test it...it fails to do so, WHY?

Before logging off...and restarting...I first must

shouldn't it STAY selected...like the others I have?

Re: [newbie] KVirc (Was: Wine problems)

2000-06-10 Thread Fran Parker

Actually I am running it in the original KDE that came with
Mandrake 7.0 (Air) version 1.1.2-30mdk...I only had to update
QT2 to QT2.1.1 and use the tar.gz instead of the RPM.

It integrates differently with KDE 2.0 but I can't say how.
(But that is basically what the web site said)

Hope that helps some.

Great news.

Don't be alarmed when it takes some time...and I do mean

Re: [newbie] KVirc (Was: Wine problems)

2000-06-10 Thread Fran Parker

OK...the new KVIrc version 2 is awesome!

Now how did I get it to run, you may ask. I had the same
problems everyone else had when I tried to install the rpm.

Well, I went and got the QT2.1.1 and upgraded my existing
QT2.

Then I got the RPM and using gnorpm I installed it.

Same problem as everyone elsedoesn't work.

I Checked the configure and it showed the QT2 directories
in the wrong place I corrected it in hopes it would re-read
it the next load and then run. No go.

I uninstalled the rpm and went back to the site and got the
tar.gz instead...since pathing was the problem I hoped I could
temporarily set my QTDIR and create a version specific to
my machines configuration. It worked! And it is awesome.
I am online in KVIrc 2 as we speak!

Maybe this will work for the rest of you as well.

Read the instructions for the installation of the tar.gz on the
web site ...that really helped alot. Although I am using Bash
and I set the QTDIR slightly differently then they suggested.

Have fun,
Bambi

[newbie] Linksys LNE 100tx problems w/ mdk7

2000-06-10 Thread Ajudgeone

I tried setting up a Linksys LNE100TX NIC on my HP / MDK7 / Win98 machine. I
have it up at boot as seen in my dmesg, but when I run ifconfig, eth0 states
Broadcast and not Up Broadcast. I can't ping it from my internal network and
I see the routes are correct. Mdk7 has the tulip driver already compiled and
everything I tried seems okay. The card is set as active in the etherconfig
and routes are correct in the route tables. I have checked the scripts and
they all have the required variables. I guess the question is how to get the
broadcast up or what else could be wrong.

My buddy said to buy a supported NIC like a 3COM. Maybe he's right, but the
Linksys should work... right?

Hi John,

Oh no. I just shelled out about $75 CDN last month, for Version 7.0
Power Pack, including tax and shipping. And, to find out that one month
later the upgrade to Version 7.1 is released! That is not fair. They
could have included a voucher for a free update or upgrade.
I work for a software company, and the general policy is: If a
registered user can prove that they purchased their software in the last
60 days, gets a free update. It's only fair.

Thanks for pointing this out to me.

Oh know. What I was recommending was an auto upgrade feature for Linux
Mandrake. I know it's a tall order but it's worth looking into for
future releases. In fact, I don't think that any one has this feature.
Or, at least, I haven't seen it , yet. Are you listening Mandrakesoft?

Re: [newbie] overwrote LILO, can't access linux

2000-06-10 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Daciaonce you're booted with the rescue system and mounted
your / directory you need to use the chroot (something like
'chroot /mnt/myroot' where /mnt/myroot is the temporary
mountpoint for your / directory) command to change the current
system to using your root directory as / (wherever you've
mounted it). Then reinstall lilo with a /sbin/lilo command.

[expert] 7.1 -- bug: floppy boot image FTP downloading

2000-06-10 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I should have clarified: I tried to download 7.1, as I have done in the
past, by using a network boot image ON FLOPPY, and NOT by downloading an
ISO image. I repeat: I've been using a boot image of 7.1 on floppy.

It brings up the entire install process. The problem is that the
download stops at the "kpppload" file, no matter what option you select,
Custom or Expert, Normal (minimal - 300 megs) or just KDE. It stops at
mid-point (with hundreds of packages remaining on the server and with
the clock at mid-point) because that is where the first CD ends and
where you are supposed to insert the second CD. But no dialogue box or
warning or instructions are given at this point. The install process
thinks that the download is over and just skips to the next installation
stage and those that follow. You get a phony "Installation successful"
message when, in fact, you really have a thoroughly crippled
installation. By the way, if you were not monitoring the download but
went out to have a beer, you would never even know about this because
7.1 just skips ahead past kpppload to the next stage. So, you may think
your installation was a success when probably it is not.

By the way, now I hear that there are not TWO but THREE CD's involved.
Is that true?

The exact same phenomenon occurred to me (at the exact same point) at
both rpmfind.net and metalab.unc.edu

Has anyone figured out a solution for this? Has anyone succeeded in
actually downloading 7.1 successfully by FTP using a floppy boot image?

Thanks so much.

Re: [newbie] 7.1 -- 2-CD download mystery -- How?

2000-06-10 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Benjaminthere's a dialog that occurs during the install
that asks you to deselect any of the three CD's listed that
you don't have available. It appears that you need to
deselect all three. If this dialog does not occur than I'd
say you have probably found a bonified installation bug.

Alan

P.S. I got my 7.1, 2 CD set from LinuxLand yesterday. Watch
out the 2nd CD in the set is labeled 'Applications' but it
should be labeled 'extended'.

[newbie] Printer and Scanner

2000-06-10 Thread Corrado / Prometheus The Gifter

Hi, every body!

I've made a little selection on what I could buy: does anybody owns a HP
930 printer?
I don't think I'll buy a SCSI scanner, not now, anyway... My budget is
very low, I think I'll use Windows as a Linux utility, for the months to
come...
Or do you think Canon 620P or HP 3200C could work under Linux?!?

Re: [newbie] Need desparate help with linux Netscape - Opera

2000-06-10 Thread Dmitryi S. Sizonenco

The Opera Alpha for Linux has a feature that allows it to identify
itself as Netscape 4.x for Windows, M$IE or any other thing you squeeze
into its "referrer" box I think. The Star Office browser also is able to
change its referrer to something different (now if they only fixed those
ugly grey-and-blue colours...). Now you only have to know exactly HOW
the Netscape's referrer field looks like and enter it into the Star
Browser's options :-)

Re: [newbie] Need desparate help with linux elf error in Netscape

2000-06-10 Thread Digital Wokan

You'd have to have a browser that lets you set the description manually
so that it could "lie" to the server. I've heard of such a browser or a
program that intercepted and altered such headers, but I think that was
back when I used (should it be called suffering through instead?)
Windows.
But then on top of that, you have to hope that DialPad didn't write
their Java using MS-J++. We all know how portable that PoS is.

To find a list of sites from which you can download the ISOs go to
www.tucows.com
Click on Linux. When the Linux page loads click on the link for ISO image
files. You will find a list of about 40 or more FTP sites. The closer you
are to the site you choose the faster your download speed will be.

   Me again!!
I have a Creative Blaster 8432CDRW and using the recomend mode istall
both 7.0 and 7.1 recognized and auto mounted it.
I can for the most part use and access it; and in fact both my hds, all
partitions except Be, my DVD,and my USB Zip drive (in 7.1) just as easily in
Linux as I can in Windows. All I have to do is click on the drive or
partition and I have access and use of it.
I know this is more of an answer than you wanted but I just wanted to
give an idea of how well Mandrake installed and works on my system without
any interference from me at all.

All right, I determined that it is a bad super-block so I'm trying to

e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/hdb5

but it returns...

any suggestions?

Hi there,

A power outage turned off my computer while I was exiting from Linux and
now when I try to boot Linux up, I'm presented with this

Unattached inode 522486
/dev/hdb5:unexpected inconsistency;run fsck manually

So I did this

and the outcome was...

==8==

therefore it's an operational error, but now I'm stumped as to what to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [newbie] overwrote LILO, can't access linux

2000-06-10 Thread Dacia and AzureRose

Well, the problem is that I cannot load linux at all.
I have an emergency boot/rescue disk that allows me to
read/write my linux file system but the system has not
loaded linux from my hard drive in that case. It is a
live linux file system loaded from the rescue cdrom to
RAM. A ramdisk.

Aparently the MBR has been over written by win98 so I
need to reinstall LILO but I don't know how to do
that. I can't find any descriptions of how to do that
anywhere and I don't want to re-install because this
seems like a completely recoverable situation.

[newbie] More on my SCSI hd problems

2000-06-10 Thread Tymanthius Rune Speak

I did a text install, and it simply bombed shortly after trying to detect the
hd's. I jumped thru the consoles, and found that it's having scsi parity
err's. What I don't understand is why.

This hd, while an older type is 'new' in that I am the first person to ever
use it.

It will install fine from mdk 7.0.2 (just did yesterday). So . . . is there
anything I can do? I'm lost . . .

My brother had this same problem and we found that in
his case it was because of a conflict between his
motherboard advanced power management features and the
way linux was trying to access those functions.

He disabled apmd and it stopped happening.

[newbie] CDROM

2000-06-10 Thread alice chen

Hi,
I have just intalled the Mandrake. The installation
is quite easy compared with other linux product.
Just now I reboot my system. Just five seconds
after the pc restarted, there is a screen asking
me if I need to configurate my hardware. Then I answer
"yes", the next screen said that something regarding
my CDROM configuration is deleted.
Then it asked me to pick one of the following,
(1)delete configuration
(2)keep configuration
(3)do nothing
I answer do nothing

>From then on I am unable to access to my CDROM.
when I type
ls -l /mnt/cdrom
the answer is always
ls: /mnt/cdrom: Input/output error
Can some people there help me to get my CDROM working?
Thanks
Regards
Alice

'old money' refers to the strange british mix of imperial and metric
measurments used at the same time, before decimalisation we had 240
pence to the pound and people use the phrase 'old money ' to refer to
the fact that they are using older measurements whether financial or
otherwise, it's a sort of old fogey affectation that i drop into

Dear Digital Woman:

Thank you so much for the offer, but I have already ordered the 2-CD
version of Linux 7.1 from LinuxLand and will get it on Monday. I have
meanwhile tried to download it by FTP. I am just curious, in view of
the problem I've described, how anyone can download the FTP version at
all?

Thanks again.

[newbie] lnx4win install probs - please help

2000-06-10 Thread Anthony Finn

I all
first post!

I recently purchased Lnx4win (version 6.5 i believe) in order to try out
Linux.

Unfortunately i have a problem

my cd drive is E: (dvd drive)
installing to hard drive D: (16gb)

(win98 is on C:)

After running install in windows and setting up my options:-
warn on exit
create shortcut
2gb native
128mb swap

The comp restarts, then alot of text comes up on screen telling me what is
happening
then it freezes saying this:-

partition check:
hda: hda1
hdb: hdb1
VFS: Cannot open root device 08:21
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:21

So i can never install it on my comp.

However, i have a laptop and tried installing it on that
hard drive C: (6gb)
dvd drive D:
It worked fine when installing it on the laptop, but i dont want it on the
laptop, i need it on the main comp!!

Can anyone please help??

afiak, you have to shrink the larger one before you can grow the smaller one,
the reason being is the software looks at free hard drive space...if the drive
is full of partitions, there is no free space to add to anything.
Once the space is re-allocated, you shouldn't have any more problems with
MDK...:)

If your Phoenix BIOS is the same as on an HP Pavilon I at one time had
you access the BIOS by pressing F1 before the boot screen appears. It had an
HP splash screen and then the boot sequence started and you had to press F1
while the splash screen was displayed.

the motherboard bios reference to com2 refers to the 'onboard'
motherboard com port, if not disabled then it will conflict with any
other comports that use the same settings, isa modems that are not
winmodems will install as an extra comport as well as a modem,

Re: [newbie]Modem Setup

2000-06-10 Thread bascule

if you truly have never modified anything in your motherboards bios
before then perhaps before you try to do so you should check to see if
your modem has any jumpers or switches on it to set it to a different
irq/io range/com port, as an isa modem it may well do so, i have a
generic isa modem that i have set to irq5 using jumpers on the card and
it installs into windows as com3 and in linux as /dev/ttyS2,

if no joy then while your machine is booting up, when you see the post
screen -the memory count and ide drive detect- try pressing the delete
button on your keyboard, older motherboards and certain less common
brands have other ways to access the bios but this usually works, your
machine is quite newish sounding and i would hope that hp gave you a
manual with it! you should than see a simple menu of bios options to
access, try using the cursor keys to navigate around, if memory serves
you will want to select a set of options entitled 'integrated
peripherals' or something similar, select and press return, if you have
the right set of options you will see an entry for com ports, select
com2 by highlighting it, and if your bios is navigated the same way as
mine, then use pageup or pagedown buttons to scroll through various
options for this com port, note the currently selected value before
changing, look for a value called 'disabled' press escape and highlight
a screen option called save changes and exit, press return, press y for
yes.

as i have implied this how to alter things in the bios on my motherboard
which is an award bios v4.60, yours may operate differently,

let us know if this works

The actual fix turned out to be * just * turn off PnP setting in the bios.
LM 7.0 regular install then is sufficient.

No additional tinkering was needed.

You have to resize your E partition first otherwise there is no space to
increase the size of your D partition.
One other word on the spec. ed. PM is that you can install it in NT when
you use it , it runs in DOS.

   Charles

P.S. I hope the server speed stays like this.

[newbie] Shutdown problem with v7.0...

2000-06-10 Thread Ronald J. Hall

Here is my setup:

AMD K6-3 @475mhz
128 megs of Ram
Voodoo 3000
SB Xgamer
Gigabyte MB
Award BIOS
Western Digital Caviar series HD
Diamond Supra internal (ISA) v.90 modem
Mandrake v7.0 PowerPack

I built this system, and installed everything by
myself, (and I'm a newbie) so beware...

Anyways, everything went fine, installation is
good. I'm up and running, all hardware is found,
working...

Until shutdown. No matter how I shutdown, from
the graphical logon screen, to "shutdown now"
from a shell, I always get a final B&W text
screen that displays a segmentation error, with
an error in line x, something to do with rec.d.

Any ideas? I've reinstalled a couple of times,
just in case it was something I did. I used all
the recommended settings.

Thanks!

[newbie] Doom question...

2000-06-10 Thread Ronald J. Hall

Okay, I grabbed the rpm of Doom from my Mandrake
7.0 CD, and installed it via kpackage. It runs,
as long as I use drakconf to set my desktop colors
to 256. Is there any way to get it to run on my
normal Voodoo 3000 setup? (1024 x 768 x 32bit).

Thanks!

PS and what about that ultra small window? :-)

Re: RE: [newbie] trouble with 7.0 deluxe install and lilo

2000-06-10 Thread dritchie

You should set up Mandrake in expert mode and chose not to use lilo, but create a boot
disk. Look around and find the latest lilo rpm at a mandrake ftp site then copy it to
a floppy (it should fit). Boot with the boot disk into Mandrake, take out the boot
disk and put in the one with lilo. Then open the floppy and click on the rpm. The next
screen should be the installer. Install it. Now open lilo.conf, create any partitions
that you know you have that aren't displayed. Also add on a line by itself "lba32"
without the quotes somewhere BEFORE you specify any of the partitions (i put it right
before the "default=whatever" command. This will allow lilo to understand the 20G hard
drive (I haave the exact same setup, except Mandrake is on a partition at the end of
my 20G, and the 6G is strictly a system backup)

I hope this helps. ( I think the latest release of lilo is lilo 0.21.4.3-1)

Good Luck

Also : will it work with ssh or do I have to use another authentification

was a bit too long for me, but I will try to explain why one should
publicly thank for a solution of his problem, and how.

[WHY?]

There are two reasons for "thx it solved my problem" messages:

1) Feels good for one who solved the problem.
2) Makes searching the list-archive easier

[HOW?]

If you want to be really usefull member of our little family, try
to formulate these "thx a lot" messages in the way I formulated this

1) Change subject line from "Cannot mount CD" into

2) Start the mail with "Hi, Steve" (or whoverer it was who solved
your problem), followed by: Your solution to my "Cannot mount CD" problem
worked perfectly.

3)Include headers of Steve-s e-mail, so that the one who searches later

Thus, when someone else searches the archive for "cannot mount CD", he
will find an e-mail with "SOLVED" in subject. Your short description

Lance
I did not see your post untill last night
as I was leaving for work.
Did you see Marc's post [newbie]Re: Lilo 1/0. It gives an explanation
for your problem at boot with Lilo.
Win2000 if you have more than 2 bootable OSs does have its own
bootloader and as I said I can give you the direction for doing so. It does
require editing and though I can tell you how, it is only fair to tell you
that I have not actually done it myself, the direction come from QUE "Using
Win2000 Prfessional".
Another option if your BIOS allows you to choose which hd it boots first,
you can set it for your second drive install Mandrake and Lilo there and you
should be able to boot either OS and if for some reason that does not work
just change your BIOS back and you will auto boot to Win2000 and/or use a
boot disk to start Linux.

Re: [newbie] Upgrading and Repairing PC's: Linux edition

2000-06-10 Thread Romanator

Great. Can't wait. Although, I have a couple of question? I have the
following on my drive:

C partition = 2047 MB. => This is for WinNT4
D partition = 2044 MB. => This is my Linux partition
E partition = 15 GB. => This is NTFS with lots of room

In which order would you begin resizing D and E.? Or, does it matter?
I was trying out some of the rpms that came with the CDs. During the
install, it said disk full?

I have an SB128. It's cheap and it works great, as far as you don't want a

NEVER winmodems, and you get visual feedback about what's going on with your

You have to modify some environement variables in order to have the sun
jdk running correctly. I have already done it, and I simply followed the
instructions provided in the various README's in the package. But I don't
remember exactly how it worked.
If you want to avoid problems, you can choose the easy solution and simply
install the kaffe package on the mdk CD. It also provides a java
environement, but without the $PATH problems.

You will find out what chip you have by issuing this command :
cat /proc/pci
One of the entry that will be displayed will concern you TV card.

Then, before running kv4lsetup and kwintv, you have to load the
