[newbie] Cannot Access Website & Mail
Greetings! This is my first mail to the group. I successfully installed Mandrake 7.1 (my first adventure to the Linux OS!). My problem, however, is that I cannot access any website or download any email. I can connect and login to my ISP without any problem. For instance, if I type http://www.netscape.com, I get the error message that it cannot connect to this name server. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to access any website? Any help from any guru would be highly appreciated! Unfortunately, I am still using Win98 to get help :-( Thank you and best regards, Al
[newbie] gtoaster permissions (I think)
Hello All, I running the new 7.1 kernel. Everything works just fine for me. Sound, SCSI, games, video etc. However, I am having a problem with gtoaster as a user. If I log in as root, it works just fine. I have it so it finds the proper scsi lun of my burner etc. When I transfer that info to my user account, gtoaster wont let me drag and drop files to the record windows. It also gives me the error: Cdrecord: Permission denied. Cannot open /dev/sg0. Cannot open SCSI driver. Then it gives me the check for possible targets as root with cdrecord -scanbus. Which points me to the lun and id that I am using already in my gtoaster setup. When I check permissions on /dev/sg0 I find that it owned by root and is part of the cdwriter group. Any and all help appreciated! Gary [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [newbie] Installation help on 7.0
First, a word of warning.. ANYONE who takes my advice as if it was anything other than another newbie's opinion is taking their computer to a dangerous place... I am a newbie (and PROUD ) and only have been doing linux since the year 2000 sometime, but I've sat near a Unix box some years back (lunchtime in the office or something) SCSI is "small computer special interface" or something along those lines... it was introduced to me back in the days of 8088's and 286 Intel processors, as a way to fool my bios (an IBM PS1 286/10 Mhz, 1.5 meg mem, 30meg HD) into allowing another drive (cd-rom, single speed) Anyway what they are looking for is IF you have SCSI, it wants to know what kind of card you have. If you do not know, and your computer is a generic type with one hard drive, or only IDE drives, and no scanners or other peripherals, and no connection in the back that is even more pins and is wider than the printer connection (lpt), it is a pretty good bet that you do not have a scsi interface, so answer none, and skip that section. OK I am ready to be flamed for run-on sentences too ED [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > I am trying to install LINUX Mandrake 7.0, and when I am installing it asks > if I have SCSI interface. [newbie] Problems with Mandrake 7.1 installation
I just installed Mandrake 7.1 yesterday, development install from install and ext. cd's, and I've got a few minor problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. First, Mandrake refuses to recognize my mouse as Logitech MouseMan+, and instead keeps calling it a generic PS2. I've changed it in the mouseconfig in DrakConf, it's recognized correctly in Lothar, but I've got no support for the wheel(even as a third button). Next, gnome-ppp--what is meant by "remote name" in the config? I've set it up exactly the same as kppp, but it disconnects about 30 seconds after the handshake, and I've got no dns, even though everything is entered correctly. Finally, there seem to be major conflicts between the RealPlayer 7 Netscape plugin and plugger in Communicator, to the point where RealPlayer freezes and I've got to reboot to get my sound back. I remember seeing something similar in the list last week, but I didn't save the message, and can't locate it in the archives. Any help, advice, creative criticism gladly accepted. Thanks in advance, Carl Kehley

Re: [newbie] Doom question...Hardware that works well?
Michael, I'm running a Celeron 333 O/C to 417 with 96 megs of RAM and an 8 meg SiS 6326 video card and both Doom and Quake 2 work pretty good. I can't use the OpenGL version because my card isn't supported, but it more than does the job. With what you listed below you should do great. Yes, it does do that ... but only if you unselect something later in the list that needs that package. Pretty strange way to do it, fortunately I went back over the list three times before I went on to the next step. Can be a pain, but worth it in the long run. Re: [newbie] How do I install a PCMCIA card on Mandrake Linux 7.0
I had a similar problem under Mandrake 6.1 and solved it by upgrading to 7.0. Under 6.1, I hadn't installed PCMCIA explicitly, 'cause I didn't have a PCMCIA card at that point), and even though the boot script said it was started, it wasn't. With the version of 7.0 which I later purchased (Air; I borrowed another version to see if it worked, and it didn't), PCMCIA support was queried early in the installation, and I installed it on my laptop. The network adapter (a Linksys Ethernet card) appears to work. (Can't use it for anything yet, but that's a Samba problem, not a PCMCIA problem). So --- are you sure that you've installed PCMCIA support? It may be extreme to reinstall from scratch, but this may solve your problem. If you choose a "theme" like MacOS, it enables sound and sets up the *.wav files for the actions(well it did for me anyways). Re: [newbie] Doom question...
Same here Ronald :) But I am having problems running lxdoom at all! I had an IWAD (I downloaded a zip file IWAD) and used Archiver to unzip it, it was a doom1.wad after unzipping. I left both in the home/fran directory, which is one of the places lxdoom looks for IWAD files but it still won't find it. I don't get it. I run lxdoom from a terminal window (as my user or as root) and it does the same thing... allocates memory and tries to locate the IWAD file and fails. I also down loaded a normal .wad file for the shareware 1.8 and it wouldn't work either. BTW: The .iwad.zip file was for 1.9. I have installed both the rpm for the music and the lxdoom (lxdoom I got from contribs in cooker and the music one I ended up downloading from rpm find (i386.rpm). Well, that is about all for now...hope someone can help me on this...really enjoy doom...not as much as Duke Nukem 3D but then DN3D isn't done for Linux as far as I can tell :( I have a Celeron 366mhz with 64megs RAM, ATI All in Wonder Pro and Yamaha SAx sound card. Motherboard VIA chipset. If you need more info...please ask. Thanks in advance, Bambi "Ronald J. Sure Gary, Here's the URL: http://www.kvirc.net/ to read up on it. I chose the download section on the top of the page on the menu, that page it shows locations in several countries. I went to the bottom of that page and chose the section where there are older KVIrc, it took me to the KVIrc directory at the following URL where I chose the 2.0.0 directory, and below that source and downloaded it directly from KVIrc instead of one of the mirrors. ftp://ftp.kvirc.net/kvirc/ Hope that helps, Bambi Gary wrote: > Hi Fran, > > On Sunday, June 11, 2000, 12:01:55 PM, you hammered out in part about > "[newbie] KVirc (Was: Wine problems)": > > FP> Last night I downloaded and 'made' the KVIrc 2. hi lance, i'm afraid that i know nothing about win2k so i can't help you actually recover your data, but you sound pretty despondent and just want to say that if you have only tried to write to partition sectors or the mbr then your data is still intact, simply(!) inaccessible at the moment, if your data is irreplaceable and necessary then as long as you have time and maybe some money you should be able to get it back. i had good use out of a program called 'lost and found' by powerquest which found most of my data on a 4gig drive which claimed to be empty space but which just had the partition info overridden, this prog may support w2k by now, also ontrack do a product but it is/was fairly expensive, i can't for the life of me remember the name though, not much help i know but if the data is worth it then you should be able to get at it, first step would be to see if someone else has those w2k recovery disks i see mentioned?! bascule Lance wrote: > > ...So, 2 years of work and 10 gigs of data all > lost, or so it seems right now. >
[newbie] networking question
i am having trouble setting up two machines to talk to each other, i'll put all the questions in this one post since they are all related, 1) do i need to 'fake' a domain for both machines to belong to or is it enough to give each machine a name? 2)is the ip address of each nic the same as each machine or is that different? (i ask because i know that one machine could have more than one nic) 3)do i need a default gateway or to set up any routing info if i only have two machines connected via a hub? 4)i know about the reserved ip addresses but does it matter which address in an allowed range is used? i have used 192.168.0.1 on one box and 192.168.0.2 on the other 5)what other quiestions should i have asked?! i have never connected two machines before, i have read a couple of books but they are a little over my head and seem to assume a lot, my machines both run mandrake 7-02 one is a 486 and one is an amdk6-2 400, i have installed a netgear ea201 in each machine and according to the diagnostic disk provided both are setup ok. of course until i know that linux is configured properly in both machines i won't know this for sure, any answers, recommended books, urls gratefully received, it is my intention to one day have the 486 machine be a firewall, i perceive that one day the uk will have reasonably priced unmetered isp access and i want to be ready!

I also had troubles configuring X during mdk 7.1 install. Don't be afraid. To avoid problem when modifying a file that is important for the system, you just have to save before editing : cd /etc/rc.d/init.d/ cp halt halt.orig vi halt (NB : DON'T DO THAT if you never used vi... in that case, use kedit, pico or another one that you know. But if you want to give vi a blind try, once it is opened, just type "G$xxx" to go to the last line of the file, go to the end of the line and erase the last 3 chars, then type ":wq" and press enter to save the file and quit edition) That way, if there is a problem, you simply have to boot in single-user mode and put the files as they were before. But note that there is no danger here, since the file that has to be edited is only invoked at shutdown or reboot time. There is also something that can be usefull : make an archive of /etc and put it in a safe place, so that you can restore a file that you broke. For doc about safe edition, maybe you could browse the HOWTOs. There is a security-HOWTO that talks about safety in a network, maybe there is another one about safety in your system... For doc about edition itself, well, I must say that I'm a vi fan. So, I would suggest you two things : - In the man vi, I think you will find a reference to a basic tutorial. Read that tutorial. - Then, you take a cup of cofee, you start vi, and you type ':help' HTH Flupke -- << There's no place like ~ ! >>
Re: [newbie] Worthless email list
Hi Fran, Thanks for your response. This is exactly what I've been missing. For some reason, the DPMS is missing from my control Center in MDK 7.0. I know I had it in MDK 6.1, I'll have another look. At least I know that it is still available in MDK 7.0. I did a standard Developer workstation install and I was so impressed that it detected all my hardware (I have one of those all-in-one motherboards that Linux used to have trouble detecting).
