[newbie] Mdk-7.1 and NT-boot.ini

2000-06-16 Thread Andrea Celli

I'va a strange problem with Mandrake-7.1.

In my box i've installed several Linux distributions and
win-NT.
I use Nt-loader (in a dos partition) to choose operative System
at boot time.

Now, i've installed Mandrake-7.1 in a free partition,to test it
before upgrade 7.0.
I choose to install lilo in bootsector of mdk-7.1 partition
Then I copied this sector in dos partition
dd if=/dev/hdc5 of=/mnt/dos/BOOTSECT.M71 bs=512 count=1
and added the usual line to boot.ini:
C:\BOOTSECT.M71="Mandrake-7.1".

This is the same procedure i followed many time and actually
works to load Mandrake-7.0 and SuSE-6.4.

It doesn't work to load mandrake-7.1 !
If at boot, i choose mandrake-7.1 i've got only a black
screen.
I'm able to start others operative systems from boot.ini
and mandrake-7.1 from boot-floppy.

Any suggestion?

ciao, Andrea Celli

[newbie] lost root desktop + menus

2000-06-16 Thread Oliver Stieber

i just upgraded to 7.1
everything went fine with two exceptions.
for some reason downloading of the security tools failed part way through,
and I was left with 64M of ram even though I told the installer I had 256M.

anyhow, I was just sorting out the network, installing the
downloading+security packages and putting the append mem=256M in the
lilo.conf
when x/linux or whatever started paging memory and ground to a halt.

after a few attempts to change terminals I ended up telnetting in and
rebooting. (since I wanted to do a reboot to get my memory back).

I logged back in as root to check everything was ok and I had no desktop,
and the menu items didn't work.
I could still open display properties and execute commands.
I checked to see if /root existed and that was ok.

the desktop for my normal logon still fine.

any clues?

Hi bascule,

If you have a look at the following URL, you will find all you need to get
you going. I followed the instructions to get my 486 configured as a router
and firewall for my small home network.

http://members.home.net/ipmasq/ipmasq-HOWTO-1.82.html

I have a question for you:

I have a 486/66 VL-bus PC with 32MB RAM and a Trident Video card. I have not
been able to install anything after RedHat 5.2. I'm interested in upgrading
to MDK 7.02 486 and am interested to hear that you have been successful at
it. Can you tell me if your H/w is similar to mine?

Thanks,

Subject: [newbie] networking question

i am having trouble setting up two machines to talk to each other, i'll
put all the questions in this one post since they are all related,

1) do i need to 'fake' a domain for both machines to belong to or is it
enough to give each machine a name?

---

Yes for most purposes you do.

---

2)is the ip address of each nic the same as each machine or is that
different? (i ask because i know that one machine could have more than
one nic)

---

It is different, but a part of the same subnet. Welcome to Networking 101.

Let's assume that machine A has two nic cards, for whatever purposes.

Then Machine B has one.

Machine A & B are connected to a common hub. Only ONE of the interfaces on A
is connected to the hub. The other is connected to another LAN, DSL/CABLE
modem, etc.

Now the interfaces on the same "segment" (in this case connected to the same
hub) would need to be on the same "subnet".

If you've elected to use the reserved IP's (a wise decision) of 192.168.0.1
thru 192.168.0.254 you can set up Machine B to use 192.168.0.2 or 3, etc.

Machine A can also use about any IP from 1 thru 254. 1 however is a special
case.

It is normally used for Routers or Gateways... so if A is to be a gateway...
Nat, etc...
192.168.0.1 is a good choice.

Two other things you need to know.

192.168.0.255 is called a "broadcast" address. The computers use this
reserved IP to "broadcast" to other nodes on the same "subnet" or LAN.

192.168.0.0 is the NETWORK address. Addresses ending in Zero refer to a
group or subnet.

Your Netmask is 255.255.255.0 since this is a class C network. The Netmask
is used to filter out packets. It helps distinguish their destination...
---

3)do i need a default gateway or to set up any routing info if i only
have two machines connected via a hub?

---

If machine A is going to be the gateway (I.E. connected to a Cable
Modem/DSL, etc.) IT is the default gateway.

In Linuxconf you ENABLE routing, but in the field where it says "Default
Gateway" you leave it BLANK on A. On machine B you fill in A's IP number...
Thus B uses A as it's gateway. Get it?

---

4)i know about the reserved ip addresses but does it matter which
address in an allowed range is used? i have used 192.168.0.1 on one box
and 192.168.0.2 on the other

---

See above

---

5)what other quiestions should i have asked?!

---

For starters dealing with DNS. DHCP for your OTHER Ethernet card. Security
levels. Samba, NFS, etc. quite a long list if you are going to set up
everything... though worth the effort.

---

i have never connected two machines before, i have read a couple of
books but they are a little over my head and seem to assume a lot, my
machines both run mandrake 7-02 one is a 486 and one is an amdk6-2 400,
i have installed a netgear ea201 in each machine and according to the
diagnostic disk provided both are setup ok. of course until i know that
linux is configured properly in both machines i won't know this for
sure,

---

Are you using a HUB? (this is a misnomer, it's really a concentrator, but
that's another matter...). You cannot simply connect the Ethernet ports
together. This doesn't work.

any answers, recommended books, urls gratefully received,

---

There are many books on this matter. If you are in a mixed environment one
of the newer ones about integrating Windows and Linux are particularly good.

it is my intention to one day have the 486 machine be a firewall, i
perceive that one day the uk will have reasonably priced unmetered isp
access and i want to be ready!

---

I hope your 486 has at least 64megs of RAM.

While a 486 does fine as a router, it normally does so if it is not bogged
down with things like Xwindows. You can use X to set things up though, then
merely have the computer come up in text mode.

[newbie] rc.firewall

2000-06-16 Thread Victor Richardson

I'm setting up a home cable-modem home behind a
Mandrake 7.1 box, I've
checked out the MASQ and Firewall HOWTO's and
understand them. Actually,
I used them with 6.0. Although, a few things have
changed since then. I
also searched the archives and there was only one
posting that didn't
answer this basic question;

What does the default entry in /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall
"echo 1 >
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/rp_filter" do? Or more
directly - what is
rp_filter?

Do I need to include this line in the MASQ/firewall
rules provided in
the docs?

Thanks, Victor

[newbie] Installation problems on ThinkPad 760EL

2000-06-16 Thread R. D. McCallion

Hi, I'm having problems installing Linux-Mandrake 7.0 on my IBM ThinkPad
760EL. The BIOS does not support booting from the CDROM and since it is
not possible to have the CDROM and floppy drive installed simultaneously,
I can not perform the standard floppy boot CD install. I have attempted
several other installation methods, all unsuccessful:

Brief:

1. autoboot.bat, selecting CD install
- CD install hangs after installer gets to 'Initializing CDROM...'
2. autoboot.bat, selecting HDD install
- Installer begins 'reading second stage RAM disk', then hangs
3. HDD install:copying contents of CDROM:/mandrake/ to HDD, creating boot
disk then booting the install from the floppy disk
- HD install gives 'Error reading second stage RAM disk' after the
partition containing the install files is selected.

System:
ThinkPad 760 EL; P133; 2.1GB HDD; 48 MB RAM; 20X CDROM; video: Trident
TG9660; running DOS (Win95) from a fresh boot (ie. not from a DOS Window)

Details:
The first install method is fairly straight-forward. I ran the
/dosutils/autoboot/autoboot.bat batch from the CD and selected 'local
CDROM' from the installer menu. The system displayed 'Initializing CDROM'
and then crashed.

I subsequently repartioned the hard drive, creating a 20 MB primary
partition with DOS and a 700MB logical drive on an extended partition to
which I copied the contents of the /mandrake/ directory on the CD. I then
ran the /dosutils/autoboot/autoboot.bat batch and selected 'Hard Drive'
whn prompted by the installer for the location of the installation
files. 'Loading second stage RAM disk' was displayed, then the screen
blanked and the system hung.

I then tried creating a boot disk using rawrite.exe and the hd.img
file. The installer booted from this, but when given the location of the
installation files it errored: 'Error reading second stage RAM disk' and
crashed. I repeated this same procedure using the pcmcia.img instead with
identical results.

I repeated all of the the above procedures several times with identical
results in all cases.

Any suggestions? If I can find a way to write the CDROM boot image to my
hard drive I could boot from the HDD and try a CD install. I haven't found
any utils to do this yet (rawrite only writes to floppies).

Thanks very much for any assistance,

Ryan McCallion

LILO goes in the MBR on the primary drive. That would be the MBR of your

start it every time I bootes the machine. Well, last night I started
fetchmail by typing fetchmail -d 150 and supplied the server name and
password and now every time I boot my Linux box and I'm not sooner
connected to the net fetchmail is off and running all by itself. I only
set it that one time. I didn't think it was supposed to do that! It's the

Or run the code from a DOS disk / partition. There is a DOSOS2 or OS2DOS dir on

the disks - at least the OVL file has been updated, I can't remember about the

Not that I like PQ anyway. Those crazy programmers write the most mungged up

Hi all, I have a problem.

I have a "Mouse Systems" serial optical mouse that I currently use with RedHat
6.1. On the RedHat system it works fine, but when I try to install Mandrake
7.1 on the same computer, without changing anything, it won't work. Using the
keyboard I can select that I have a "Mouse systems serial mouse" on ttyS0,
which is the case, but any mouse movement produces only jerky movement up to the
top left corner of the screen.

I've installed Mandrake 7.1 onto my kids computer and LOVE the look of it. So
now I'd like to get it going on mine so I can play :)

A name for each machine is enough.

>one nic)

Each Nic needs a separate IP address. If you hand out equal IP's there
will be confusion all around when one machine shouts "Hey, 192.168.0.1,
here's something. Eh... oh, it's for me too??"

>3)do i need a default gateway or to set up any routing info if i only
>have two machines connected via a hub?

Networking set up a gateway thing for me, on 192.168.0.255. I don't know
if I use it, but it apparently is there.

>4)i know about the reserved ip addresses but does it matter which
>address in an allowed range is used? i have used 192.168.0.1 on one box
>and 192.168.0.2 on the other

This is how I did it also. You can also use 192.168.0.100 and
192.168.0.200, as long as you don't go over 255 (254 in case you have the
gateway on 255). This of course limits you to having only 253 possible
machines on your network. SHould be enough, I guess.

>5)what other quiestions should i have asked?!

Do I need to enable all NFS daemons in the services? Yes. At least, if you
want the machines to be able to transfer files to and from.

Can I share drives over the network? Yes. In your /etc/exports you write:

 (rw,no_root_squash)

where is e.g. / or /home or /usr, or whatever share you want
the other side to access, (add a line for each mountpoint)
and is the name of the OTHER machine. So if you set this up on
machine "bascule_main", and you want "bascule_firewall" to be able to
access the /home share on "bascule_main", this would read:

/home bascule_firewall(rw,no_root_squash)

Then on "bascule_firewall" you mount this one as:

mount bascule_main:/home /mnt/main

And through /mnt/main on bascule_firewall you then can access
bascule_main's /home directories.

Was this clear? Don't know. Was this extensive? I guess!

You're in England? Neat! Tomorrow I am coming over for a week. I am going
to spend a week in Wales!

It's better to have a domain.

No. Each nic has an IP adress. If a machine has 5 nics, then it will
respond to 5 IPs.

If you just intend to communicate between the two comps, it's not

I would suggest you to read the LAME (Linux Administration Made Easy) and
other books from the LDP (the NAG and SAG [Network/System Administrator's
Guide],...) Thoses are available in different formats and language at
http://ldp.linuxbe.org . There sure are other mirrors somewhere else, but
I don't know them.

Well, prepare your knowledge before worying about hardware (but ok,
it's also important to have something to make it run...). Read as lot as
you can about TCP/IP, routing, browse the HOWTOs, etc...

I speak from absolute experience here. I too picked up that card (Ohhh a

I am almost using same type of machine like you, and have had the same problem -
not with my burner, but with my CD-rom. For me to see, the problem lies in the
supermount. When you starts your CD-player, it mounts the drive for audio-use,
and not as /mnt/cdrom (or likely), and then you can't open it as so. I have
noticed, that when I have had a audio-CD in the drive, I have to open it again,
using my 'player-program' and then inserting a CD-rom, it starts to act 'normal'
again - but right - it's locked until you unmount it with the program that has
got access to it.
Hopes it works for you

Re: [newbie] Trouble booting 7.0 from 2nd drive with System Commander

2000-06-16 Thread Wendell Gragg

Ok, I reinstalled SC2000 and it did pick up the Linux drive and gave me an
option to boot; however, when I choose it, I receive an error message saying
that there is something wrong with the boot sector. It says that the boot
sector does not have the usual signature. If I tell it to go ahead and boot
anyway, it just hangs. Obviously I did something wrong in the Linux
install, probably with LILO. Do you have any ideas? I know it didn't ask
me whether to install LILO in the MBR, so I am not sure where it put it.

Thanks again,
Wendell

[newbie] more samba

2000-06-16 Thread Oliver Stieber

ok I've now managed to get samba up and running fine,
and have a fully talking office lun(linux underground network) with one
little exception.
dozy 2000,
it refuses to connect to my Linux box, and smbclient shows no shares.
the samba site says that 2.0.7 fixes a lot of 2000 interferences so I
downloaded the 2.0.7 red hat rpms, but they have a dependency problem
(readline#.so or something).
un-installing 2.0.6 and forcing 2.0.7 to install results in unstartable
services, so I went back.

well here's the question,
1: has anyone got samba 2.0.7 working under mandrake 7.1
2: does it have any problems talking to dozy 2000.
3: where can I get the missing lib.

and last but not least,

when's the samba documentation getting updated, is a nightmare.

I run a p3-450 at 608mhz on a BX board. Consequently I have a
wopper cpu heatsink with dual fans (Alpha p3125), and I monitor
temps, voltages, and fans. I use Khealthcare and dock the cpu's

Hi Gica,
Mandrake found my zip drive alright. When you first installed it with
your installation disk does it can for scsi devices? If not, you will
probably have to manually loan the module and edit fstab.
Here is what I done to get my external drive working.

Mkdir /mnt/zip

insmod parport
insmod ppa
mount -t msdos /dev/sdX4 /mnt/zip

You shouldn't have to load parport.o. Since we aren't using pre 5.2.

Add the folling line to /etc/fstab

/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip vfatuser,noauto 0 0

That entire line needs to be in the fstab file.
I use /dev/sda4. That will probably work with you but no guarantees there.

Then just type: mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip
your drive should light up and initialize. BTW: If you don't have
a zip disk in the drive when you tried to access it on your desktop,
it will give you an error. :)

Here is another way to get it working. My friend had success using this.

mkdir /mnt/zip
cd /mnt
insmod #imm
mount -t msdos /dev/sdb4 /mnt/zip

Hope this helps!
Chris

You do not need to uninstall Sys. Com. just reinstall it on top of itself.
This will allow it to pick up all active boot sectors including Mandrake

Re: [newbie] partition magic

2000-06-16 Thread GAPrichard

I know I'm late in responding, but. here's how to fix your Windows
partition so that you do not have to low level your hard drive.
As a computer technician, if you brought your computer to me I would
probably wipe & reload your windows partition, which would save your Linux
partition. I have not done a low level hard drive (HDD) format since I was
in tech school--it isn't needed on IDE drives made in the last ten years; let
alone there are many reasons NOT to. If there is some reason to seriously
consider low leveling a drive, it would very likely be better to replace the
drive while information can still be pulled off it, rather than to lose all
the time and effort represented by the installing&configuring that's already
invested in it. The time and effort you've put into what's on the drive
(system, programs, and data) is the most valuable part of the computer!
If you were willing to try something on your own, I would advise you to
do the following [this is what I would do (and have done) for myself]:

[for the Windows partition, prior to seriously considering low-level HDD
format]

  1) Back-up all,important,criticaldata on<
depending on what
tape CD floppy
< media you have avail.

  2) Disable anti-virus, screen saver, power management (if active), etc.
(once only!) should show the following tasks active
on Win98 (others should be similar)
Explorer
Systray
Wsloader
[ on Win3.1 shouldn't show anything (except program manager)]

  3) [ I always liked to run "chkdsk" [ without the "" ] from DOS prior to
anything serious with a HDD. Boot to DOS or shutdown to DOS, not "shelled
out." Ignore the scandisk advisory. If there are any errors run "chkdsk /f"
to fix them, as a message will instruct. ]

  4) "defrag" "thorough" the drive. If it hasn't been done in a long time
it may run 1.5 hr or longer. DO NOT STOP IT unless you are SURE it has hung.
If it does hang, reset everything and run it again. And again. And again.
Does it stop at the same place? Is it getting further each time? Is there
no pattern? In the latter case you should think seriously about buying a new
drive (this is the point I bought one for myself), though there are cables
and other things you might want to check first.
If defrag completes successfully but problems continue do a "refresh"
reload [SEE BOOT FLOPPY WARNING BELOW]. Boot from floppy and access the CD.
ChangeDirectory to \windows & run "setup" from there. This should maintain
you previous configuration, but you MAY still have to configure periperal
drivers (you DO have them on floppy don't you?). The exact results you get
will depend on exactly which version of Win95 (there are three, without
considering special versions for Compaq & other large computer makers) or
Win98 you are using. Refresh reloads can also be done with Win3.1.
If your refresh completes successfully but problems continue do a wipe
and reload. Boot from a floppy and format c: ... /u < unconditional (forced)
format [note that the format program must be on the floppy for this to work].
Then change to your CD and run "setup" from the root directory. You do not
need to CD to \windows.
BOOT FLOPPY WARNING >> BE SURE (and I mean to TEST IT FIRST!) that you
have a working boot floppy configured to access your CD ROM -- BEFORE --
you refresh or wipe & reload. Write protect it before you test it.

This should solve your problems. If it does, then go on to use
partition magic to create the additional space you want for Linux. If it
doesn't, think again about buying another drive.

2000-06-16 Thread Wendell Gragg

Charles,

Thanks for the reply! I guess I just don't understand System Commander. I
used to use Boot Magic and someone told me this was better. I also had used
an older version of Linux that was on this drive when I installed SC and it
did not pick it up, which confused me.

Anyway, I will completely de-install system commander and reinstall it and
see what happens. I'll let you know.

RE: Re[2]: [newbie] this is an emergency (lilo, mbr, windows...)

2000-06-16 Thread Mike Perry

Hope this helps if you have the Winblows2k installation disk.

When you boot the installation media, you can press R to use the Emergency
Repair process. You will then press M for a Manual Repair or F for a Fast
Repair.
During a Manual Repair, you can select/deselect the following:
[X] Inspect startup environment
[X] Verify Windows 2000 system files
[X] Inspect Boot Sector
 Continue
Inspect Startup Environment checks the ARC path against the Setup.log file
on the ERD or %SystemRoot%\Repair folder. The Setup.log files contains:
[Paths]
TargetDirectory = "\WINNT"
TargetDevice = "\Device\Harddisk1\Partition1"
SystemPartitionDirectory = "\"
SystemPartition = "\Device\Harddisk1\Partition1"
With this data, the ARC path can be corrected or a missing boot.ini can be
created.
Verify Windows 2000 System Files checks all the Windows 2000 files on the
System/Boot partition against the Setup.log CRC value for each file. If the
file is missing or corrupt, you are prompted to replace it.
NOTE: The optional NTbootdd.sys is not checked.
Inspect Boot Sector repairs the active system partition boot sector and
reinstalls the boot loader. If a non-Windows 2000 boot sector is found on a
FAT or FAT32 system partition, the Bootsect.dos file is created and a C:\ =
"Microsoft Windows" is added to boot.ini.
NOTE: There is no registry repair option with Manual.
The Fast Repair option does all of the Manual Repair options and checks the
SAM, SECURITY, SYSTEM, and SOFTWARE registry hives for corruption.
If a hive is missing or corrupt, it is replaced from the %SystemRoot%\Repair
folder.
If a hive is replaced, your system has some updated hives and some original
hives. You must do one of the following:
1. Restore the System State
2. Use the Recovery Console to replace the hive with a more recent copy, as
from %SystemRoot%\Repair\Backup (if you checked Backup the Registry while
creating a recent ERD).
Both repair options will check the file system integrity on the boot and
system partition. If a correction is made, you will need to restart and
choose Repair again.
Neither option checks %SystemRoot%\System32\Config.nt or
%SystemRoot%\System32\Autoexec.nt.

RE: [newbie] Kppp/Modem Problem

2000-06-16 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Normally this is because your ISP is using CHAP/PAP authentication and
either;

- You have failed to enter what the server expects for CHAP/PAP
- Your machine is trying to authenticate the ISP's, (did you turn this off?)
- Your CHAT routine/script is "out of sync".
- Half Duplex is turned on, on your modem.

Hi, all ==

I have a different modem problem. Kppp recognizes my modem, but when I
connect with my ISP, I get the message "Connect at

but I can't do anything without rebooting. I
suspect that this is a simple configuration problem, but I'm at a loss to
say where it is.

Have any of you had similar experiences?

RE: [[newbie] Mouse Problem after CPU Switch]

2000-06-16 Thread Leo Stutzmann

Thanks, Yes, it is a rotary dial switch allowing 4 cpus to share 1 keyboard,
mouse, and monitor. It works correctly in Windows NT, Windows 2000, and
Solaris X86. It loses the mouse after switching back to a cpu. The mouse can
be restored by CTL-ALT-BACKSPACE, shutting down X, and then starting X
again. Everytime I switch, the above has to be performed. There must be
something, as Solaris works OK.

Thanks

Not really sure what you mean by a CPU switch??? Is it a DATA switch similar
to a printer switch so you can run two printer's from one computer..??
If so have you tested the switch in Windows ONLY? I have a similar setup
here...it shares keyboards/mice with one monitor amongst all the computer's
If this is the hardware you have...I would guess maybe a bad mouse cable or
something like that.

Re: [newbie] this is an emergency (lilo, mbr, windows...)LanceREAD NOW

2000-06-16 Thread Charles A Edwards

Lance
I see the [newbie] server is delaying again this message posted to me
before your [newbie] post did.
When you went to the recorery console and executed your commands a
disclaimer message appeared which I will paraphrase "I do not know where
your Win2000 partition is either. If you choose to complete this command it
will probably screw things up even more." I used it with the same results as
you had.
Yes if you had a Win2000 ERD you could still install Win2000 in restore
mode and preserve your data and settings but it has to be an ERD that you
created on your system. You can not use one created on another system.
I like PartitionMagic and use it myself but it can f up too. So I
would not be overly concerned with what it now says my partition tables are.
What we want to do now is to preserve and hopfully recover the data on
your Win2000 drive so we do not want to do anything else to this drive
If I remember correctly you said yor 2000 hd was 20GB and your other
drive was 12GB so I will refer to them as 20 and 12 rather than hb1or2 or C
and D.
This is what I would do if I were in your position.
1} Disconnect 20 and set 12 as the master drive, remember to change the
jumpers(mine is cable select so it is easy to change between master and
slave).
2} Install Win98 on 12
3} When Win98 is up and running and you have installed your printer or any
other perif. you might need for your data recovery shut down.
4}Reconnect 20 as slave drive, remember the jumpers.
5} Restart your system and , fingers crossed, when Win98 boots and you open
My Computer you will have a D drive which is Win2000
6} Copy your data files from Win2000 to Win98
7} After you have copied all your data, shut down, change 20 back to master
and 12 to slave.
8} Do a new install of Win2000 on 20 use Fat32
9} When the install completes and Win2000 boots the bootloader will display
giving you the option to boot to either Win2000 or Win98.Choose Win2000
10} Once Win2000 boots go to Accessories/System Tools/Back-Up and create an
ERD
11} Install any needed programs and then import or copy your data back from
Win98.
If this situation has not completly turned you off on Mandrake, I hope it
has not, and you plan to reinstall it on your 2nd hd do not delete Win98 use
PM to reduce it in size because unless you plan to do a great deal in Linux
4 to 5GB is plenty space. Also by keeping Win98 all you need do is change
which hd boots first if you have problems again with Win2000.
I myself have not installed Mandrake on my Win2000 system I have 7.1
installed on a dual 98 system. I do plan to install 7.1 on 2000 sometime
this week it uses Grub rather than Lilo as its default boot loader and I
think Lilo might be the problem with 7.0 and 2000.
I have tried Corel Linux on my 2000 system and though I did not like the
distro itself its boot loader did install and work with Win2000.
Let me know how your problem works out and I will let you know how the
7.1 install goes.
   Good luck.

   Charles

P.S. I hope my instructions do not appear too simplistic. That was as much
for my benifit as yours. :-)

2000-06-16 Thread ~-=Mark=-~

Actually it's a new install. I originally wanted to get 7.1, but I
mistakenly ordered 7.0. No big deal I've downloaded the ISO for 7.1 at
work and I only have to burn the CD's yet. However, I'm finding 7.0 isn't
as well behaved as I was led to believe. I absolutely LOVE the look, feel,
bells and whistles that it has, but it's got some quirks that are
intolerable!

Example:

I had Netscape Messenger running last night and was working my
butt off to get it configured, (just one of the intolerable things). When
I attempted to import some address books from my DOS partition I didn't
have access to that dir (/mnt). Yes, that drive is correctly defined and
is mounted at boot. I was able to access the drive using a File manager I
just wasn't able to access the darn thing to import my addy
books. Something I've done hundreds of times in RedHat.

I've noticed there many similarities between RH and Mandrake.

Do the other things work with internet? Can you browse http or ftp server?

Try to make a "telnet popserver 110" and see if it responds. You can even
try to log to the server (with the USER and PASS commands) and send some
commands like STAT, LIST 1, (close the connection with the "QUIT" command)
or things like that. If that works, then the problem comes from your
client's configuration. If it doesn't work, then either there is a problem
with your internet connection, or the pop server is down.

Anyway, you don't need to setup a pop server.

Not that I know of, unless you want to perform ISP-like tasks on your own
system, with mail relay etc.

I use a python scripts called Getmail (link to it on
http://nlpagan.net/linux.htm#tips) which works well. Did you also try
checking mail with Kmail?

Your monitor manual should give you a listing for sreen sizes and res.
Try out a couple to see which you like the best.
I, myself, use 1024x768@100. That setting gives me plenty of sreen area
without everything being to small and there is no flicker what so ever.

Re: [newbie] Swap partition

2000-06-16 Thread flupke

I think that the easiest thing to do would be to add a 250 MB partition,
so that you won't have to resize anything.

Use fdisk, cfdisk, or any other disk partitionner, and create a 250 MB
swap parttion (let's say you do it in /dev/hdb2).

Then, initialize the swap partition :
  mkswap /dev/hdb2
in your /etc/fstab, add a line :
  /dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
and activate your swaps :
  swapon -a

And you now should have two swap partition of each 250 MB.

Re: [newbie] NT and Linux

2000-06-16 Thread flupke

The technic consist of installing lilo on your linux partition (not the
MBR)and make an image of your lilo boot sector. So , if your linux (and
your lilo) is on /dev/hda2, type :
  dd if=/dev/hda2 of=~/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

Then copy the image (~/bootsect.lnx) to your NT partition, and, in NT,
change your c:\boot.ini and add a line :
   c:\BOOTSECT.LNX="linux"

(note that you'll have to change your c:\boot.ini file's attribute to do
it).

Next time you boot, you should see a linux entry in the ntldr menu.

If you have problems, read the Linux+NT-Loader-mini-HOWTO

Yes. Install NT, then install linux (do not let is install LILO or GRUB in
MBR, and make a floppy for booting during install). Then read the
mini-howto on NT+Linux.

Also it is advisable to compile things as root, if you want to be able to
use them systemwide. Don't know if you did this, so I throw this in

If you know the brand of your SCSI disk, perhaps at the website of the
manufacturer you can find a low-level disk utility to check the disk. SCSI
parity errors sound like a nasty thing, perhaps the disk is not too
