[newbie] Problem with Xwindows.

2000-06-17 Thread Ashraf \(Muhammad\) Al-Jumayli

I'm having a problem with Xwindows, I tried to configure it but when it was
done the window came out huge and it was shifted to the right. I tried to
choose different resolutions but it didnt fix the problem, I tried different
monitors and it didnt fix the problem either, could it be my video card? i
have an "Intel i810" video card, which is not listed, so i chose the "Intel
i740". Someone suggested I use "xvidtune" but that didnt work, instead it
gave me an error and said "unable to display". If you have any suggestions
or know how to fix this problem, please tell me.

Thank you.

I don't know, I seem to get better download times on my Win2k box than
either of my Win98 or Linux boxes... let the flames begin!!! Seriously
though, on any of your OS's you can tweak the settings to allow different
connections. Not all hardware is created the same - you're using a 28.8
modem, Windows may be optimized for the 56k flavour. I'm connected via dsl
on a lan and I honestly have noticed considerably higher download speeds on
Win2k. (Me thinks it's time to play with all my settings!)

My $.02

Have you brought up a mixer for your sound card and ENABLED the Line-in
port?

It may be off by default.

Note that with some of the original Brooktree drivers there was a reported
problem wherein the TV tuner card's audio output was not being enabled or
reset.

Since the card comes up with audio output OFF, this can be problematic.

RE: [newbie] networking question

2000-06-17 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Once it's up and running, you don't need much.

The problem is that the installers and configuration utilities utilize X
windows...

Yes, you can do this in textmode... but it becomes very complicated for a
newbie to deal with textmode and script editing... etc.

Anyway after things are set up 32 megs or less will often do as long as the
latency between your interfaces is relatively low.

You have a P100 which is normally adecuate for cable modem speeds, esp. due
to the PCI bus.

He is talking about a 486. Have you every tried a dual ISA 486
configuration?

It works, if you minimize the installation requirements... but performance
is not optimal... or you can run something like the floppy based bare Linux
distros which tend to work well... like the Linux Router Project...

For Mandrake, however he is best advised to get more RAM... just to permit
the install to complete. Use X to set things up and test... and then he can
dump X and all the X apps.

Or, help him set it up in text mode...

Hi Dr Caracciolo! The Reiser Filesystem handles improper system shutdowns
far better than does the (current) standard Ext2 filesystem. The improper
shutdowns, which of course can be caused by a myrid of things like power
outages or inexperienced Linux users' response to a crashed program or
frozen desktop. The way I basically understand it, the Reiser Filesystem
will usually pop right back up in situations that would cause a prolonged
FSCH and often filesystem damage under Ext2. It's a journalized filesystem,
as is the BeOS's filesystem. I've tested the BeOS's ability to recover from
all kinds of improper shutdowns - I basically got really abusive with it
just to see how much it could really take; I never managed to knock it down!
I'm in hopeful anticipation of the same type of stability with the ReiserFS.

Re: [newbie] upgrading to 7/1

2000-06-17 Thread Mark Weaver

it shoudn't be taking that long for an upgrade. I don't know why Mandrake
is taking that long, but what if you just installed right over top of the
current installation. I know when I do this with an installation it
doesn't disturb the user dir's or the data files. Nor does it touch the
settings. As long as you don't format "/" or any other dir other than that
which are being used by the system itself, you'll be just fine.

Be sure though just in case something weird happens that you back up all
of your important, can't do without files.

I Just now, received this reject, of a message I sent to newbie MDK,
on the 11 may 2000...? where has this been for Thirty Eight days? ...I
was trying to help Wayne, the warranty on his computer has likely
expired by now?

Never in five years have I had a mail lost this long..the US
postal service is faster than E-mail? I did not want to send the whole
reject to the list, but in the header was addresses of daemon in the
UK...the MDK machine is in the UK? I thought France.

sorry Wayne.

Re: [newbie] ETHERNET CARD PROBLEM

2000-06-17 Thread Mark Weaver

for the ethernet card try setting the IRQ jumpers manually if the install
will allow you to enter the address manually while you're installing the
system. I've had a few like this at work with a Win 95 machine and I know
of some NT applications are like this. So it would surprise me to find a
flavor of Linux doing the same thing.

:) as for your Video card and the display troubles you're having. That's
somthing that you're very likely going to have to play with for a while to
get it just the way you want it. I worked (wrestled) with mine for a good
hour this afternoon before I finally obtained the desired results.

try setting the color depth a little lower.

You might try this one:

rm -rvf *.rpm

that should take out ever RPM file in the dir that you're issuing the

Re: [newbie] Rescue Disk

2000-06-17 Thread Mark Weaver

I've got a question about 7.1. At the present time I'm running RedHat 6.2
on one drive and on another I've got Mandrake 7.0 installed. I'm falling
in love with Mandrake very quickly, but I'm noticing that it's not as easy
to configure as RedHat was. Not to mention that some things don't install
as well such as Star Office.

My question is, is Mandrake 7.1 any better behaved than 7.0 and what's
configuring it like?

thanks,

[newbie] sound module (nm256) hangs on 7.1 boot

2000-06-17 Thread John O'Shaughnessy

Greetings,

After a successful few weeks of Mandrake 7.0 on a Dell Latitude LS laptop, I
decided to reformat my Linux partitions and do a fresh install of Mandrake
7.1.

The installation went fine using CD's I burned from the two ISO images
available for download, but now, when I boot, the machine hangs when it gets
to:

Loading sound module(nm256)

I need to hold down the power button to get the machine to shut off.
Control-C doesn't seem to work.

I hadn't attempted to use sndconfig with my 7.0 install.

The machine has a neomagic sound card.

How can I get past this error? I could live without sound, if I have to,
but having a machine that doesn't boot Linux is a bit short of my objective
:)

Thanks!

John

In the current dir :
  find . -name "*.rpmorig" -exec rm -f {} \;

To erase all the *.rpmorig in your system, replace the "." by a "/"

2000-06-17 Thread Eunice Thompson

I've installed it but I don't think I've integrated into Netscape yet.
in a terminal:
1) tar xvzf
if you're not already root
2)su; then ls to find a directory called ILINUX
3)cd to that directory- (there is a Readme.txt file, that younshould have a
look at)
type ./INSTALL and it will ask you some questions.
I had to make a directory- /usr/local/Acrobat4
because that is where it installs to.
I basicaly just stopped after I got it installed, leaving the browser
integration for another day.
Hope this helps

although the files are listed as .gz ...sometimes they get to you not
zipped...
What I did to open the files was, run xtvf instead of zxvf
and if the file tested ok with this t option..I ran them with xvf and
they untarred really nice. if they balk try putting "filename" quote
marks ,around the whole filename...if it still don't work try changing
the gz to just .tar...I thought the files were bad at first, but
messing with them made them eventually work. I was doing this on an
xterm command line.

Good luck

[newbie] ETHERNET CARD PROBLEM

2000-06-17 Thread SJN

Dear Linuxers,

I'm using Linux Mandrake 7.0. I've installed it so many timer over just to
get used to installation process. But I still could not overcome two
problems. I appreciate some assistance here.

1. Ethernet Card
3Com 509b (combo) ISA using BNC cable.
PnP mode disabled.
I couldn't get the card to work. Installation found it but after
installation it is not functioning.
Booting process shows Eth0 initialisation failed.
Lothar doesn't help much.
The card works fine under win98 and win2000.

2. Display/Graphics Card
S3 Savage3D AGP with 8MB on board.
I could not get it to it to the resolution I want i.e. 800x600 at 32bit
color depth.
The monitor screen will go blank and the LED indicator on monitor shows that
no signal received from the card.
DrakConf offers no help as well.
The card works fine under win98 and win2000.
Monitor is a 15" Likom L503BGD.

Thank you very much in advance for the help.

Best Regards
Joe

I've heard stories of the upgrade taking up to 17 hours. Yea, you read that
right. :) 17 hours. But then I heard another person say 3 hours. So its
unpredictable. A new installation takes alot less time then the upgrade.

Its under DrakConf. Under the boot section I believe that you can set lilo

[newbie] E-Mail clients

2000-06-17 Thread David M. Kufta

I noticed in the list several messages concerning e-mail client's. I
saw that there was no mention of Polarbar mailer, I found this mail
client about six months ago and like it very much. Polarbar is a pure
java mail client so requires, obviously, that java be installed on your
system . This mailer is very feature rich and can be easily configured
with multiple personas, pop accounts and incorporates it's own very
useful filters as well. Information is available at www.polarbar.org
wher you can download polarbar and also find links for java resourses as
well. I began using Polarbar when I needed to find a mailer that would
understand qmails Maildir structure as I run my own smtp server here and
use qmail as my MTA. There are many mail-clients that are available for
use with Linux-Mandrake and still more that are under active
developement . Look around at linapps for a list of other MTA's,
mail-client's, if anyone decides to try Polarbar and has difficulty with
it I would be more than happy to help where I can. I also have Polarbar
setup on my rsync server here at n3meq.dynip.com and the module contains
everything necessary to setup the mail client as well as rpm's for java.

Good Luck,

[newbie] Need help with charitable linux project

2000-06-17 Thread Eric Mings

I decided to post to this list because I have been using Linux-Mandrake
for a while and feel it is probably the best option for a project I
intend to start. I am hopeful that perhaps some of you may be able to
assist with knowledge or other resources. I am a psychologist who does a
lot of work in nursing homes. In my experience there is a population in
every nursing home that I have visited who are intellectually intact and
quite lonely and bored due to their circumstances. Some of these people
are relatively young and suffer a debilitating disease such as MS, and
others are elderly persons who have retained their intellectual abilities
in the context of declining health. They have lost the physical ability
to interact with the outside world as the rest of us do, and typically
feel quite out of place in an environment where most of their peers are
too confused to provide them much human interaction.

I want to begin placing computers in these facilities for the sole use of
residents who wish to use them to reach out to the world they can no
longer physically access (via email and web access). Obviously I need a
multiuser system and need to minimize costs and maximize reliability and
ease of use. Consequently I plan to try to obtain donations of equipment
and will probably use Linux-Mandrake as the operating system (unless I
were to find another Linux version that would be more user friendly for
novices). I am trying to keep any costs to the nursing homes to a bare
minimum (such as a phone line for internet access) because this industry
is in financial difficulty in the US and unlikely to be willing to
burden any significant costs to participate in such an effort.

If anyone knows of a company that might consider donation of equipment,
or if you wish to provide any expertise you may have in setting up and
maintaining Linux-Mandrake for use in such an environment please contact
me directly _off_list_, so as to not burden this list with further
discussion that might not be of interest to most list members. Thanks in
advance to anyone who may be interested in such a project.

Your setup is exactly the same as mine. AMD K6 II 400 , 64 MB ram via chip on
the soyo 5EHM+ motherboard , ergo you should be able to fix the problem with
the specified edit if the problem is indeed the CPU or chipset. Seems as
though the chipset is the common factor.

KompuKitreplying to myself here (argh!). Judging from the
time it took this message to arrive back in my mail I guess
that the uppercase 'N' is related to somehow slowing down the
time it takes for the sick old server running this list to
send back out the email it receives. I've sent messages after
this one but addressed with an uppercase 'N' instaed of with a
lower case 'n'and it was back in my mail within an hour. All
while this message was languishing someplace on the tired old
server (Wed, Thur, Fri & Sat.) for 4 days.

I think maybe a higher priority needs to be placed on fixing
this problem.

I'm sorry allan...but you are partially wrong...it does.

I was having problems "recieving" my posts back to me...
within minutes of posting...

it was taking sometimes 10 days to get them back...and sometimes
not at all.
The reason for this...was because I didn't cap the "N"
in newbie...ever since I started capping the "n"...I've had no
problem...

for further proof...look at every one elses posts heading
where the address is...
everyone else is also using the cap "N"

AARRGHH!
Could some nice gamer out there PLEASE help?! I've just loaded Q3 on my

I've finally got the game to work with Mandrake 7.1 Final (had been
stuggling to get the open gl to work) but everything is moving REALLY
SLOW. The cursor barely moves across the screen and the sound is really
choppy. I've tried adjusting the settings, but I'm still barely
moving. It's obviously not the hardware (unless I've got something set
incorrectly). Any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch!
Mike

I think I used the wrong commands. I downloaded it to my root directory.
Next, I typed in tar-xvzf linux-ar-405.tar.gz
A new directory named lLINXR.install was created. I could see the
install script with dark monitor.
Every time I changed to this directory and typed in ./install it would
indicate that the directory or file is missing.

Re: [newbie] Can't get Apache to show web page on network

2000-06-17 Thread KompuKit

first of all, you need a website..directory...in:
/home/??/public_html

??= your home directory (not ROOT)

then you need to insert those configurations in the webserver config...
in linuxconf (under drakeconf)...then the tab saying NETWORKING.
it should say: Apache webserver

you need to edit : document root, server dns etc...

if you want, I could send you my httpd.conf file...then all you have to
do,
is re-edit the locations on your machine...to go along with what you
have.

it's attached on this email

Re: [newbie] partition magic

2000-06-17 Thread GAPrichard

This newbie posting clarifies a previous posting and corrects an error.
Sorry.

With your writing about low-level formatting, reinstalling, etc. to make
space for Linux, I want to make sure that a distinction is clear. And please
note that I am not familiar with Windows NT or 2000 and these o/s are not
included in the comments below.
Both chkdsk and scandisk check a Windows hard drive's file integrity.
Windows will write a given file all over the disc, the end of one block gives
the address of the next one to read. An example of a problem that can come
from this, that chkdsk and scandisk will find, is if two different files link
to the same target block--this is called a cross-linked file. A common
problem when a Windows program crashes and Windows fails to update the disc
directory for that program is that program data blocks on the disc are not
assigned to any file nor are they allocated as available: known as lost
chains.
Different is the "defrag"menting process that consolodates disc
free-space together that had been intersperced with program and data blocks.
Complicating the defragmenting is the "recycle bin": things that have been
deleted but can be undeleted. They are assigned to a special directory, and
though the file is "deleted" the blocks that the file resides on remain
unavailable for use yet they show as unoccupied on the defrag screen.
To make the space that you can partition for Linux to use, first run
chkdsk/scandisk to verify file integrity. Then run scandisk "thorough" to
verify that the hard disc itself is OK. Then empty the trash (recycle bin)
to make disc space occupied by deleted files actually available for use and
allow other data to be moved into these blocks. Finally defragment the hard
drive to gather all of this free space together. Now you can partition some
of this free space for use by Linux.

Next let's put this all together (edited from a previous posting).

[preparation of the Windows partition for resizing
to allow free-space to be partitioned by Linux]

1) Back-up - all (or) important (or) critical - data < depending on
what
on tape (or) CD (or) floppy < media
you have avail.

2) Disable anti-virus scanner, screen saver, power management (if active),
etc.
(once only!) should show the following tasks active
on Win98 (others should be similar)
Explorer
Systray
Wsloader
[ on Win3.1 shouldn't show anything (except program manager)]

3) I always like to run "chkdsk" (without the "") from DOS prior to doing
anything serious with a Windows HDD (hard drive).
Boot to DOS or shutdown to DOS. Do not run chkdsk while "shelled out."
At the "C:" command line prompt type "chkdsk" and
(again, without the ""). [for simplicity I'll say ]
Ignore the scandisk advisory and continue.
If there are any errors run "chkdsk /f" to fix them (as a message
will instruct).

4) Within Windows (deactivating other processes first, as noted above) run
scandisk.

5) Next run scandisk selecting the "thorough" option. This may run over an
hour (depending on hardware). DO NOT STOP IT unless you are SURE it has
hung. If it does hang, cold boot the computer, reset everything as noted
above and run it again. And again. And again. Does it stop at the same
place? Is it getting further each time? Is there no pattern? If it stops
in the same place each time, or there is no pattern you should think
seriously about buying a new drive (this is the point I bought one for
myself), though there are drive cables and other things that might contribute
to the problem.

6) Empty the trash ("recycle bin") for all Windows users (if individual
"users" profiles are implimented) and "defrag"ment the drive. This often
takes over an hour. As long as it seems to be progressing allow it to
continue. Depending on your hardware, etc., five hours might not be
alarming. Proceed as in step 5) if there are problems. When defrag
completes successfully, all free space will be consolidated after the
programs and data.

If scandisk completed successfully (even if it took several hangs and
restarts to get successful completion), defragmentation completed, and upon
using Windows you do not have operational problems (if you had problems prior
to the chkdsk/scandisk/degrag process) you can go ahead and shrink the
Windows partition, and use Linux tools to repartition the now unallocated
space to create space for Linux to use.
If scandisk, etc., completes successfully but Windows operational
problems continue, do a "refresh" reload of Windows [SEE BOOT FLOPPY WARNING
BELOW] : Back-up data, as noted in step 1) above. Boot from a floppy disc
and access the CD drive (with the Windows CD already being in place).
ChangeDirectory to \windows (i.e. if D is your CD drive, first

RE: [newbie] printer

2000-06-17 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Probably because there is a parameter missing in

/var/spool/lpd/XXX/postscript.cfg

(replace XXX with the name of the queue you created.)

Look in postscript.cfg there should be a line which reads something like...

COLOR=-dBitsPerPixel=24
PAPERSIZE=letter

If the "COLOR=" line is empty, this is your problem.

It should contain the color depth parameter... the above may work for you...

Remember to restart the lpd daemon!

|to bother my colleagues on this list, I wanted to go to

|the site is next to impossible.
|
|Questions:
|
|1. I assume that the SAMBA Server goes on the Linux box that
|is trying to access NETBIOS resources. Is this correct?

Yes, you must configure Samba (/etc/smb.conf) so that your Linux machine is
a member or server on the same network as your other machines.

|2. How do I configure the SAMBA Server so that it can access
|the NETBIOS resources? I've tried various combinations of
|TCP/IP and NETBIOS names and numbers, but none seem to work.

Basically edit /etc/smb.conf and restart the samba server software...

Since you have NT machines, you'll need to use a Domain Controller (PDC).

Samba will act as a PDC for your network, but you must set it up to do so.

If one of your NT machines is your PDC, then you'll have to point Samba to
it.

You'll also have to configure encrypted passwords...

| Has anybody actually done this, so that you can either
|tell me how to do it or where to go to find out?
|

Yes it works fine (don't know about Warp though...)

There are several books now out on Integrating Samba and Windows Networks
which are invaluable.

RE: [newbie] IP-Chains/Masquarading

2000-06-17 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

As you configure networking in Linux, set your Gateway to be the IP of the
Linux ethernet card connected to the common hub (actually subnet).

If you have configured a DNS in Linux, then set your Client Linux machines
to point to it.

If you have not configured a DNS (meaning that you are running your own
server) then point the clients to the ISP's DNS instead.

The Netmask must be the same on your clients as your Linux machine's
ethernet card (on the common hub).

That's it.

You uncompress the archive :
   tar zxf linux-ar-405.tar.gz

Then, the rest should be self prompting.

Re: [newbie] security

2000-06-17 Thread flupke

Indeed, a too high security level prevents one from being able to login as
root, even in a console.

This is is handled by the msec package.

See the files under /usr/doc/msec for more infos about the
different security levels and how to change it.

Are you SURE that lilo (and not grub) is installed on /dev/hdc5 (check
that there is a line boot=/dev/hdc5 in your /etc/lilo.conf).

If this is the case, try to re-execute /sbin/lilo before make again an
image of the boot sector and copy it to your nt partition.

Without 64 Megs you will have problems getting this to work.

The installer fails to run properly, nor can you get the installers working
under Xwindows..

You can however install it with 64 megs then remove 32 megs later.

[newbie] ReiserFS with Automatic install!

2000-06-17 Thread Thomas 2

For anyone who would like to have the ReiserFS in 7.1, and at the sametime
do the much easier automatic install, here's what worked for me: First
select expert install, and when you get to where you setup your partitions,
select ReiserFS as the filesystem type. After it formats the partitions, go
back to the 'installation class' selection in the left hand menu and select
automatic install. It'll skip the partition setup since it was already done
(or you can just leave it as is and tell it to NOT format anything!) From
there on it's an easy install, and you'll have the ReiserFS to boot!
