Do you want shockwave or flashplayer? If you're talking about
Macromedia's 'Backstage', I don't think they have anything available at
this time. If you're interested, goto this page:
http://www.macromedia.com/software/

They seem to be getting into the Linux thing, so maybe in the next
couple of years we'll see something. This site does mention that they
will be releasing 'generator 2' for web pages in November.

Re: [newbie] Power failures whilst in LM

2000-06-21 Thread GAPrichard

answering 6/18 posting from [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Tom Brinkman)

Tom,
You are correct that the UPS has surge/spike protection within it (at
least all of them that I've run across). And, I've found that the
surge/spike protection built in to the UPS rivals the best separate units
available [I had a data corruption problem where surge/spike effectiveness
was obvious] -- remember that I bought good surge/spikes and UPSs, your
mileage may vary. None-the-less I've always used a surge/spike before my UPS
and (later on) a surge/spike/RFI after.
I replaced my UPS with a new APC 650VA earlier this year. I don't
remember reading anything saying not to also use surge/spikes inline [though
you are correct that it would not strictly be needed], but remember that I
volunteered to being paranoid about this. I've had data problems caused by
powerline irregularities and fixed them with surge/spike and UPS additions.
[I also recommended a surge/spike & UPS combination to one of my customers
when I was a technician and had that customer's problems were cut over 90%.
I guess nothing is 100%.]
Even if APC did recommend use of no other in-line surge/spike units,
unless there was a VERY good reason for not doing it, I would run extra
surge/spikes anyway. Better surge/spike units use better components and will
stand up to more line abuse before beginning to deteriorate, but the problem
remains: ALL surge/spikes deteriorate with exposure to powerline
overvoltages that are in their working range, and there is no way to tell
this without laboratory instrumentation. With cheap surge/spike units
combined with bad line conditions it might be wise to replace the unit every
six months. Normally you do not replace one at all unless it took a serious
"hit" [you can usually test if it is dead, it will be shorted]. If
something's going to have to be replaced early I'd rather it was $50 to $100
for a surge/spike, not $300+ for a UPS. I put the newest & best surge/spike
nearest to the computer, and the oldest next to the power line. In this
configuration my APC has automatically handled low line voltage conditions
and momentary outages easily. In Windows, where I have UPS monitoring
software, everything is reported & metered just as it should be.

[newbie] Cable Modem Blues

2000-06-21 Thread Powers

Hello Collective,

I survived my first disk partitioning and the instilation of a non-windows
os but am left with a cable modem that now serves as a paper weight. I have
no clue where to get info on how to establish a connection with my
comcast@home service and seek the wisdom (and patience) of you - the
knowledgable masses.

Before I can even ask a good question I need to know what I am asking so:

What information will I need to have before I can attempt to get the modem
up-and running, and once I have that info- where is a good place to learn
what to do with the info. The cable company COMCAST will "only answer
specific question but not help use the answers" I need to know what
"specific questions" I need to ask them.

I am using a dell dimension xpsr350 PII. the modem is a Toshiba PCX1100. it
is external, and IF i am reading the system report correctly the network
card is a SMC EZ Card PCI 10 Adapter. Lothar tells me that everthing is
configured fine, but I can't seem to find the place, dialague box or
whatever where I would establish a connection to the internet service

Thanks in advance for the advice, and pleas help free me from my windows
internet chain.

   YES

look 'bout half way down the page an you'll see a list of
everything that's usually needed to compile most all source.
It's mostly 'devel' and 'lib' packages you're prob'ly missing

While you're there, read the whole section MOF, the whole site

1. After installation, it was impossible to start windows 98. I obtained a

avoid this problem, preferably by-passing the use of a LINUX diskette.

Please do not use Linuxconf to admin sendmail. Do you know how many
undocumented executables there are in linuxconf? It admins sendmail in
very nonstandard ways. And you will not know anything about really
working with sendmail..

[newbie] un zipping tar files

2000-06-21 Thread Dennis Myers

I must be going blind , I read the code somewhere on installing a
.gz file. Can't find it, I know its in the book and man pages. I also can't open the

the books on the CD ROM that has the extras, #3 in my package. I can open "Using
Linux" but none

of the rest of the ebooks will open, I just get a blank page and nothing more. Don't
find any help in the users manual either.

That's two problema presented in a bit of an incoherent manner. Any help would be
appreciated.

Jim,

I agree. I was mistaken in my first opinion. Someone brought to my
attention that he is actually offering more at a cheaper price and you're
right. His time is indeed worth something. I apologize if I offended
anyone with my remarks. I really didn't mean to. Expecially he who is
making the offer. I wish I could remember his name. :)

Well...from what I understand from another on the list is that the list
owner, the one I believe who is making this offer, is indeed making it
cheaper than what Cheapbytes is offering this CD set for. I stand
corrected.

Mogens,

don't worry. they're quite stable. I order from them all the time. I do
know that as Linux grows more and more popular, especially now with the
fallout from the M$ - DOJ trial here in the states, they're getting a lot
more business then ever before.

hang in there. When ever I order from them I sometimes don't hear anything
from them till two days later when I receive my first confirmation.

Are you logging in from KDM? If so, you should see a little pulldown button
just below where you type in your password. Hit the arrow and you will see
the options (you proably now have KDE as a default). The options include
Gnome, as well as several others (windowmaker, icewm, afterstep, fvwm2, etc.).
If you choose Gnome, the system will take a couple of minutes setting up
Enlightenment (the default wm for Gnome) and Gnome. Once you get into your
initial Gnome setup, you can configure as you like (background, theme, etc)
and can also switch window managers (try icewm instead of enlightenment) for
your Gnome setup)

[newbie] Huge Terminal Size

2000-06-21 Thread Anthony Huereca

I'm having the wierdest problem. I was running Linux today like I normally do,
and then all of the sudden when I'd open up a gnome-terminal, the size of the
window was huge, as was the text. Normally, when I open one up, it takes up
maybe 1/12 of the size of the screen. But now it fills about half the screen.
The text is also about 3 times as big. This just happened, I didn't change
anything or nothing like that. Just all of the sudden, I opened up a terminal
and it was "big sized". I just rebooted to see if that might fix it, and it's
still just as big. Does anyone know what happened or how I can get it back to a
normal size?

Thanks Thalliox,

I really appreciate your step by step help.

I did the insmod command like Mr Scott Tyson advised but it gave
3c509.o error. invalid io.
what does this error means? wrong i/o port?
the win98/2000 shows that it uses 210 but the modprobe showed that it uses
300...

But anyway I'll try your solution first. thanks

|I've got a small 3 box network running Mandrake 7.02 & 7.1 at

Eh, set the name of each of the hosts in the /etc/hosts file...

Things are a little easier this way...

Then make sure that the hosts all appear in /etc/hosts.lpd and that you've
allowed them access in /etc/hosts.allow.

Yes see above.

Re: [newbie] another modem

2000-06-21 Thread Keith Nickas

I don't know if this is still relating or not, but I have that same modem. I
was using Mandrake 6.0 until recently and the way that I got mine to work
without having to get the card out and make changes was to edit the
"hosts.allow & hosts.deny" along with setting the BIOS with "NO" PNP OS
Installed.

Then, I added this command that helped myself since I have the modem set
with the v.90 update: AT&F&C1D2S202=32X3S6=4M0

This will let you dial-out without having to wait for a dial-tone, which I
was having a problem with on my if I turned off the speaker! If there's
anything else... e-mail me and I'll see what I can do for you!

Re: [newbie] Which is the ideal directory for RealPlayer7 in MDK7.1?

2000-06-21 Thread Roman Bysh

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the info. I checked this out. However, RealPlayer G2 is no
longer available for download for Linux and Unix - according to
www.real.com. Unless, you have an extra .rpm copy Real.com only offers
options for Realplayer7 or 8 .rpm(beta) or .bin(beta).

Too bad.

Re: [newbie] procmail sorting

2000-06-21 Thread Monte Milanuk

Well... That doesn't work quite as I had intended. The
whole story is that the stock kmail that Mandrake 7.1 ships
with has been doing strange things to my mail, and is
generally buggy as heck. Plus a botched fetchmail run
partways thru left me w/ several hundred duplicate
messages. I finally got the latest stable version of
kmail, plus the Kleopatra version... neither was an
appreciable improvement for what I wanted. So I tried
using Netscape Messenger. It's worked for years, and I've
got the hotkey sequences pretty much hardwired by now.
Suddenly it tells me that it cant get write permission to
/var/spool/mail/monte for lock files, and I may need to
change permissions to 01777 on that file/directory. I did
that once, and it worked. I reinstalled for some unrelated
reasons, and in this install, it doesn't matter if I chmod
the directory or not, Netscape still refuses to get my new
mail. Fine. Time for pine, the old standby. Now I try
the command listed in Jari's procmail tips, referenced
earlier in the thread, and it didn't quite work. I don't
know if I need to tell procmail to split the inbox file and
treat it like a digest when I feed it to it, but it isn't
creating any of my list mailboxes or anything. And for
somereason, now pine won't check new stuff in my spool. So
I try mutt. It works, but procmail still isn't. I decided
that I really don't want to settle for a cli mailer unless
there is no other choice. It looks like I may have to
append all these various mailboxes together, and feed them
thru a duplicate nuking procmail recipe, and then just have
Netscape sort the messages into mailboxes. What a PITA.
And I really don't want to have to hunt down and delete
manually the duplicates, so I hope I get procmail running
right, soon. What a mess.

[newbie] Postfix configuration

2000-06-21 Thread Sthitaprajna

Hello folks

Can someone tell how to configure Postfix as my MTA? I have a dial-up
account with my ISP and a dynamic IP. Fetching mails from pop servers
is fine with fetchmail. I want to use my web based email accounts,
like say mailandnews or yahoo, by masquerading as my email address
like [EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than user@localhost. I had
been using sendmail to do this with RedHat, but how do I make Postfix
do the same? I am using Mandrake Air.

URLs would be helpful as would be a little bit of elaborate help.

It would probably be best to find a more expert level list to post this
question to. Most questions considered "newbie" in nature involve
getting minor programs or the OS itself to just work. Your question
concerns the equivalent of running a micro-ISP.

RE: [newbie] Installation problem: flashing login screen

2000-06-21 Thread David Talbot

When mandrake is booting, it will reach a point where "Welcome To Linux
Mandrake" in powder blue. "Press I to enter interactive mode" followed by a
bunch of Loading whatever [ OK ]. As soon as you see that "Welcome To Linux
Mandrake" Press the letter i on your keyboard. It will go on to some of
those various "Loading this [ OK ] Loading that [ OK ]" ect. Then it will
display a screen that has various options like:

Start Computer With graphics and network
Start Computer in text mode with network
Start Computer in text mode only
Configure
Continue
(Rough approximation of that menu from memory, expect it to be similar, but
not identical)

You want to select "Start Computer in text mode with network" by
highlighting it with your arrow keys, then pressing enter.

Your computer will booth nomally until you recieve a login screen.

Login as root.

Type in
Xconfigurator and choose your video card and monitor from the lists then
choose the option to automatically scan for resolution.

Xconfigurator is pretty self-explanitory. (It's actually a link to a Drak
tool, something like DrakVideo or some such, but that is outside the scope
of your problem)

After your finished setting up the video stuff, it'll dump you back out to
a command prompt. You should be able to type:
su - david
(replace david with whatever you user account is probably valvo or
something similar)
now type in
startx

And the GUI should load up. If it doesn't then try toying with some more
settings in Xconfigurator.

Re: [newbie] kdesu

2000-06-21 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Darrylif you don't want to further explore this kdesu
thing then say so, ok?

The kdesu executable does not belong in /usr/share/apps. What
you are seeing there is most likely a directory called /kdesu
that normally contains a couple of icons.

Executables belong in /bin or /sbin directories. All of the
user-appropriate /bin directories are automatically included
in each user's $PATH. The normal place for the KDESU
executable is in /usr/bin/ and if it is in there than it will
execute when called by a user. But if the executable is
really in /usr/share/apps it won't execute when called (unless
called with a full path like /usr/share/apps/kdesu).

RE: [newbie] Installation problem: flashing login screen

2000-06-21 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Or let it boot up and press ALT-F6 you'll be left at a text login...

Then press ALT-F1 to go to the primary console screen...

Login and type

killall xdm
killall kdm
killall gdm

Disregard any errors...

That will terminate the Xwindows session which is attempting to start...

Now run Xconfigurator to set up your video card.

Yes it was, however I installed over Red Hat 5.2, so maybe that

[newbie] Mirrors

2000-06-21 Thread Eunice Thompson

The user group that I belong to (www.cerritoslug.org) would like to set
up a mirror for Mandrake.
Does anyone know how?
I know that I need to use rsync, and although I've requested info from
Mandrake about this I haven't heard anything from them (I've sent
numerous requests for info on different subjects to different people at
Mandrake and I haven't gotten a response to any of them!!).
Any help or clues would be appreciated

2000-06-21 Thread Alan Shoemaker

MogensI just ordered a product from CheapBytes on Sunday
evening. Got a confirmation email from them before 9:00 am on
Monday, and a shipping confirmation just after 4:00 pm also on
Monday. For what it's worth, I'm in California as are they.
As to their stability, I've no idea. I will let you know when
I actually get the product (I chose US Mail because it was
cheapest and they're relatively close to me [~500 miles]
geographically [remember the Creedence Clearwater song, Lodi,
well that's where CheapBytes is located]).

[newbie] Mandrake 7.0 http install problem -- can't locate second stage ramdisk

2000-06-21 Thread Peter Yellman

I hope I'm not repeating myself, some help would be much appreciated.

I thought I had put this behind me with a couple of network/http
installs of redhat, turbolinux, etc., but am having problems w/doing so
on Mandrake 7.0. I'm trying to install from a local network http
server. I have created a virtual directory named mandrake so that the
following directory structure is displayed when you visit
http://192.168.0.3/mandrake/

--> base
--> instimage
--> mdkinst
--> RPMS

However, when I attempt the install, I get the mesage: Unable to
retrieve the second stage ramdisk: File not found on server.

In the Web site name field, I have entered 192.168.0.3, and tried
including the http://, trailing slashes, etc., just for fun. I have
also tried every variant to specify the directory that I can think of,
such as:
/mandrake
/mandrake/
/mandrake/base
/mandrake/base/
and others.

I've tried installing with both the graphical (DrakX) and text-based
network install images, with no success.

I installed RH 6.1 over the network, from the same webserver, on to this
very same machine just a few months ago, and it's been running on the
network fine since, so I'm pretty sure it's not the NIC.

I sure hope someone out there has a quick answer to this silly problem.

Oh yeah -- no CD-ROM on this machine.

Thanks,
Peter Yellman
