[newbie] 2nd CD-Rom/Burner not reading

2000-07-02 Thread Adriaan Barel

Hi All,

I'm running version 7.02 (air) and can read from my ordinary CD-Rom
but not from my 2nd CD-Rom/Burner. Its not a permissions problem and
the second CD-Rom burns CD's OK. Its not a major issue but I do prefer
to use my 2nd CD-Rom as its less noisy and runs more smoothly. For
some reason the first CD-Rom sounds unbalanced. The noisy CD problem
can't be solved and happens also in Windows so I'm not looking for an
answer to that.

Ps. I get the message:-

"Could not list directory contents"
file;/mnt/cdrom2/

Any ideas?

Many Thanks

[newbie] XFree 4.0 Termcap reference

2000-07-02 Thread John Rye

I just tried to upgrade to XFree86 4.0 over mandrake 7.0's Xfree
3.whatever.

Xinstall.sh seemed to function correctly, but gave some guff about
"termcap" needing modifcation.

Anyhow, if I use "startX" I get a termination with the error:

"FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect errno = 111

filer to set default font path unix/:-1"

Can't find any refence to this path in the xterm file.

Help!

sure it won't do anything, Mark.. because it seems that you
don't have desktop #2, yet.
So, open/create that #2 desktop by (CMIIW, I haven't using X for a
long time) right-click your mouse and there should be an option to
make a new desktop. Then, you can switch desktops.. :)
BTW, blackbox, IMHO, is the coolest window manager ;)

When you

ls -l /dev/cdrom

Where does it point to then?

This may be a stupid suggestion but , since you can mount /mnt/cdrom2, maybe you have
to
mount/mnt/cdrom1.? It seems kinda logical if you have two devices to mount, but
this
is really just a WAG.

[newbie] gcc can't find the header files

I installed gcc from the Mandrake 7.0 CD and the
header files were put into /usr/i386-glibc-linux/include/
but when I compile a C program I get an error saying
"Cannot find stdio.h".

I have put /usr/i386-glibc-linux/include in my PATH
but it hasn't helped.which makes me wonder what the
PATH variable is doing anyway.

I have spent most of today on this and am throwing

Since you are using the more traditional mounting method, I
suggest changing the filesystem type from "auto" to

Re: [newbie] Mozilla Fonts

You might just install the following three rpms from the
first Mandrake 7.0 cd:
gtk+-1.2.6-6mdk.i586.rpm
gtk+-devel-1.2.6-6mdk.i586.rpm
gtk-engines-0.8-1mdk.i586.rpm

When I installed Mandrake I selected GNOME as my default
environment. Your mileage may vary if you went for
KDE. gtk is the basis of GNOME. Someone else may have a
better suggestion though.

I'm very very new to Linux so please forgive me if this doesn't help

I read that changing it to 16 bit eliminates this problem.

Not exactly,
I have a P166, 80M Ram and installed Mandrake just fine .(It worked fine
when I had only 32M RAM) the diff is I upgraded to a 6GB harddrive and
used 250M for swap; my friend who belongs to my LUG has a P133 with 80M
RAM , 1,2GB drive and he's running RedHat6.2 with no problems.
My advice is to go to :

and search for your particular model.
They do a really good job

What's wrong with a binary tarball? It installs pretty well, but the
SSL tunneling facility is prety poor as you say. Read the mozilla

Security is one thing, paranoia quite another. If you set your
security settings to low during a Mnadrake install, it has something
to do with the permissions on your computer rather than security via
the internet. Of course, it a good thing to have good security, but
if you set the settings to high or paranoid, you won't enjoy working
on your desktop. Bar some, most Mandrake users use Linux at home on a
workstation or a small home network of 1,2 PCs. Now if you set the
settings as High, you can't access many programs as user because you
will not have access to execute them. Would that be beneficial?

A security setting as Medium is just fine. If you really do want to
ensure that someone else is not intruding upon your privacy via the
internet(if that is at possible), then you'll need to monitor the
logs /var/log/messages when you are connected. Close down and stop
ports that are unnecessary and stop unnecessary services like httpd,
and such likeon the machine. Not only are they security probs, but
memory hogs. A good place to get started is the security howto in
/usr/doc, as well as the system admin guide and network admin guide.
A good book that is very thorugh is Essential System administration
by O Reilly press.

Security is one thing, paranoia quite another. Remember, no security
settings can fully protect your computer. the best course is careful
monitoring, and that comes of need and habit.

Re: [newbie] Fonts in Netscape

2000-07-02 Thread Digital Wokan

I still had to go into the XFS config file mentioned in the README for
the Mozilla-Fonts package and add the directory the Mozilla fonts got
installed to (look at the file list in the RPM, because it's not the
same directory as the readme says).

[newbie] identd and /proc/net permissions

2000-07-02 Thread Frank Reid

I've run into an unusual problem with Mandrake 7.0. I installed identd
(actually, midentd as this box masquerades internal hosts with ipchains).
in.midentd runs as nobody.nobody in inetd.conf, and ident challenges fail
with a log entry that permission is denied for /proc/net/tcp. If I chmod
the /proc/net directory, identd requests succeed. However, permissions
revert to the old permissions soon after.

Is this a bug with Mandrake or something I'm doing wrong? Must in.identd
run as a super-user?

[newbie] re Pronto Mail (Not Quite)

2000-07-02 Thread Pedro _

I have Mandrake 7.02 Air and internet connection via LAN / Windows 98 SE (It
is Win PC that have the modem).
I tried to install Pronto mail with prontoinstaller.pl but I received so
many errors that I abort the installation.
Do I need to make any special configuration for the internet connection?

I decided then, to start work with email, use the Netscape Messenger. It is
very easy to make the configuration. Is there any problem to use Netscape
for email?

Thanks in advance

Sorry, Paul, but I don't agree with what you said:
a low security level can help intruders to have access to your computer
and it can also give more privileges to those people.

Maybe this is not the place to discuss how and why it can happen, but I
think that people on this list that care about their security on internet
should be aware of that.

Of course, the security level can also prevent bad or stupid local users
to do nasty or unwanted things.

I hope you are using a dual boot system with Windows using LILO. At
the LiLO prompt, type linux 1. Now when Linux boots up, at the boot
prompt type root. It won't ask you for a password. Then type passwd,
and enter your password, enter and retype again.
You are done. Reboot, normally. Login as root. Goto KDE DrakConf and
manage the user settings. Remove old users and add them anew if
things dont work out as a last resort.

It might have soething to do with sendinf the messages to Newbie@ or

Well, Hotmail never ran of LinuxIIRC, it used to run FreeBSD, and
it still runs FBSD. And it uses qmail and tries to be pretty secure.
IMHO, BSD clones are somewhat stabler than Linux systems, if only
Bill Joy came out from Sun and helped guide another release of the

Re: [newbie] Mandrake update and new kernel?

2000-07-02 Thread Mark Weaver

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the info. I think there was a problem with the first attempt at
updating cause I tried it again a little later and this time only grabed
the newer kernel. the Update utility took care of downloading AND
installing the new kernel. As soon as I rebooted this time the new kernel
was installed and booted just fine. I'm really liking this version of
Linux a lot cause everytime I get to messing around with the kernel(s) I
almost always toast my box and end up with a few hours of repair
afterward! :P

Mandrake 7.0
Thanks for the help for a successful install. StarOffice 5.1
Steps I used were a bit different from those suggested:
1. As user, not root, I unloaded from the #3 cdrom to:
/opt/Office51/bin/soffice
2. In a terminal , executed /opt/Office51/bin/soffice
which brought up the complete install process
  and this was very simple.
 Printer setup was unbelievably simple.
I execute the program as a user.

Re[2]: [newbie] MS Linux?

2000-07-02 Thread Michael P. Wilson

When they bought HotMail, they tried to convert the servers to NT, but
it was a complete disaster (as you might imagine.) So they had to
switch back to the original platform.

I don't recall which unix flavor it was though. Something in the back
of my mind says BSD.

[newbie] xfree86

2000-07-02 Thread John T. Seebold

1.) I install LM 7.1
At this point booting into xwindows works fine.
That is to say, it works as it should.
2.) Upgrade to xfree86 4.0 so I can use the newish NVIDIA drivers.
Some issues with configuring the /etc/X11/XFree86-4 file,
but in the end it works fine... until I reboot.
3.) Booting into xwindows seems to work fine, *but* no matter what
window manager I select it kicks me into kde.
Now I realize I have to enter name & password first, then select
windows manager - so it's nothing that simple
but it is upsetting, so I now boot to text mode.
4.) Here's the kicker... 'startx -wmaker' works!
No kde... window maker.
5.) My initial guess is that whatever program it is that brings up
the nifty login box when booting to X is pointing somewhere it
shouldn't... any ideas? comment? knowledge at to what needs to
be changed to remedy this?

THanks,
John

Mark,

Click on the KDE Control Panel Center icon. Which kernel version do you
have. The patch was recently put on
the rpmfind ftp site kernel update 2000 2.2.16-9mdk. After it installs,
an entry will be made to /boot/Grub/Menu.1st file. The next time you
reboot, Grub will show 2.2.16-9mdk.

Hi Pete,

Try uninstalling some of the programs that you are not using with
rpmDrake. I think you may be overloaded. This happened to me last week.
I just kept on installing and installing. After uninstalling some
unnecessary applications i.e. text and graphics editors, I was able to
read my files.

Don't forget, you can always add them back again(rpms).

Re: [newbie] Linux-Mandrake 7.0 Complete installation

Dear All, Thank you for your help. I at least did some installing but
made the mistake of choosing no root password since the instructions
said I could. When I came to the add user page then I put myself in
there as well as my husband then I put a password in. Now when I get the
Log in page with the cute Penquin sitting there ( I think this is the
KDE control center) it will not accept any of these user names or
passwords. I tried the user idea but that did not work. How can I go
back through the installation process and change a few things such as
create a root password and set up some other things that I skipped
without messing up the install?Do I put the install CD in again and
choose reinstall? Is there a way to login that I do not need a root
password? Should I put 'user' after Login and 'root' for the password?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Sincerely,
Marcia

If you have installed it, do (as root) # updatedb &

Then # locate soffice

Or #which soffice
/usr/X11R6/bin/soffice

Then (as user) issue command $ soffice

If 'soffice' is located somewhere outside of your path, then
either move it to /usr/X11R6/bin or make a symbolic link

I get groups of postings two or three days late and yet mail arrives in my

mail posted on those days takes 48 to 72 hours more to get to my inbox is a

has a whole suite of accounting apps including Bank reconciliation and
what you are looking for "Billing". I haven't had a chance to do

Hopefully, the Mandrake people will have an i586.rpm of this available

Check freshmeat.net, appwatch.com, and linuxberg.com for your needs.
You're likely to find it somewhere in them.

Login as USER !
Then type 'su' and enter your root
passw.
There is a way to do it, but
for security raisons don't login as
'root'.
If you like it, setup kdm with your KDE
Control Center
and log-in in X, therefor change in
/etc/inittab the 3 to 5
or at boot type 'init 5'.

Re: [newbie] No Penguins on login screen.

2000-07-02 Thread Romanator

Hello Mark,

Login as 'root' and start up the KDE Control Center:
1. Navigate to Applications->Login Manager->Users tab
2. Under the user column, click on the word root.
3. To the right should be an icon button. Probably something other than
a penguin.
4. Click on the icon button, and then the drop down arrow.
A window will open up (by default) to /usr/icons or /usr/share. It
should be blank.
5. Choose /usr/share/icons, and scroll down in the window until you see
your penguin icons.
Choose the penguin of your choice, then Apply and OK buttons.
Repeat steps 2 to 5 for your login name
Restart KDE and you should see your penguin icons.

I think the firewall is more a protection for things coming in from the
big bad world. Internal security is more an issue for warding off stupid
users. If you have no (stupid) users on your system, you can go to low
security.

Keep firewalling!

Re: [newbie] MS Linux?

2000-07-02 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

http://www.hotmailsux.com/ should do the trick. I stumbled upon it while
trying to do the same thing as you, Mike (i.e. convince friends how crap
Hotmail and Microsoft is). However, it states that Hotmail began with FreeBSD
(not Linux), and after a failed attempt at moving it to NT, it is now back on
FreeBSD. Also on that site are good links, including one to get free webmail at
microsuxx.com. I made an account, and I can say it's pretty good (and quite
speedy too).

I remember reading in a reputable computer publication (I don't remember
which one) a while ago that for a (very) brief time M$ had part of it's
microsoft.com site running on Linux with Apache, and some pages had Linux
links. This apparently was *fixed* as soon as word got out. This could well be
true, especially since Bill has been known to have held shares in Linux
companies in the past.

Re: [newbie] Mozilla Fonts

2000-07-02 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

I tried Mozilla Fonts with Netscape. They wern't that bad, but on some sites
they still left something to be desired. I found the best way to get decent
fonts was to install the TrueType fonts commonly used in WinDOS (Arial, Times
New Roman, Courier New, etc.) and set Netscape to use those. I originally
installed them in Mandrake 7.0, which required some fiddling around with
configuration files. In Mandrake 7.1, however, DrakFont makes installing fonts
exceptionally easy.
The hardest part is actually getting these fonts in the first place. If you
already have Windoze installed (like I do), then just copy them from your Fonts
directory. If you don't, then you either have to copy them from someone else
with WinDOS (is this legal if you don't own a copy of Windoze?) or find a way to
extract the CAB files on the Windoze CD or discs. I don't think there are
currently any Linux programmes that can do this, so you may have to use good
ol' DOS.

[newbie] Regarding Samba

2000-07-02 Thread Justin Ford

I have been struggerling with Samba for quite a while and now I am turing
for help.

I will explain the problem then explain my troubleshooting.

I have a PII 333
64 Megs of RAM
Linksys Ethernet Card
The Box with Samba is Mandrake 7.0
Other workstations are Windows 98 second edition.

Well I originally configured Samba and i am able to see other computers on
my workgroup but unable to mount or surf these computers. But the other
computers which are running windows 98 are able to access my Mandrake 7.0
box Another funny thing is when I try to restart my Daemons SMB and NMB I
get a error that reads
"[root@digital init.d]# ./smb restart
Shutting down SMB services:[FAILED]
Shutting down NMB services:[FAILED]
Starting SMB services: smbd: error in loading shared libraries:
/lib/libreadline.so.3: undefined symbol: BC
   [FAILED]
Starting NMB services: nmbd: error in loading shared libraries:
/lib/libreadline.so.3: undefined symbol: BC
   [FAILED]"

So I have uninstalled the samba RPM packages thinking something funny happen
during the install. Then I download the new Samba version 2.0.7 in the
*.tar.gz form and was able to compile and install. I still have the same
problem with browsing other computers and restarting the daemons.

So I have no Idea what to do now. The only thing I can think of is downgrade
to Redhat 6.1 bcs that is my other Distrobution in my house. But I would
rather not because Mandrake is far superior.

Please help me

I missed something of this thread, it seems. MS did try to make the
transition from Linux to Windows NT after they took over Hotmail, and they
put in a LOT of effort and money. The problem that they faced, however,
was that there was no combination of NT-computer/memory/disk and windoze
mailserver that could handle the amount of accounts (millions) and e-mails
(gazillions per day). They tried setting this up for 4 months, shadowing
the load of the Sparc's that Hotmail used to NT machines in each
conceivable configuration. It did not work.

So they did not choose Linux, they were just doomed to continue using it,
in a way, since their own product was not able to make it work.

The only thing that I know of that MS did for Unix (not even specifically
Linux), is build some things for Apache so that can support "BackPage"
extensions. (Who'd want that with PHP anyway.)

I know about the limitations of win NT compared to Unix. At work we use a
bit of a database that continuously calculates processes (1.6 million
measuring points that are updated every 2 minutes). All attempts to make
this go on Win NT failed 10 out of 10 times. MS-Access cannot take it,
Oracle for Windows is way too slow.

A nice basic Oracle database on an HP-9000, running HP-UX, has no problem
with it...

Either in /opt/Office51/ or in /opt/Office51/bin/ there should be a small
loader-file called so51, if I am not mistaken. That is what you use to
start the program.
You will have to create an icon yourself (rightclick
desktop->new->application) and enter the full path to the so51 (I think
that is it) file.

Re: [newbie] Staroffice 5.1 install

2000-07-02 Thread Bill Fisher

Mandrake 7.0 Macmillan
The Getting Started manual says to follow the ReadMe file insttructions on
disk 3, which is:
 'rpm -i StarOffice-5.1a_01_517i8-1.i386.rpm'
in order to install from disk 3.
and got a cannot find message.
So I just opened the other icon StarOffice5.1a and installed it into
/opt/Office51/
Now wondering how to start the program? I dont see any icon on the desktop or
in the list of applications.
Thanks for any help
Bill

Isn't supposed to be 128m (small M) or doesn't it make a difference

while linux may support your setup, the distr of mandrake 7.0 is optimized
for Pentium class processors, I suggest you either get correct version for
the mandrake web site or try an older version (or of course you could get a
newer computer)

I'd suggest you go to www.freshmeat.net and do a search there. It's

You will need the "xsane" package for that. It is something else than
"sane" (hence the 'x' in front of it). That should get a plugin in Gimp
going.

Must be server problems or upgrades at linux-mandrake.com

go to /etc/logrotate.d and see if in one of the files you can find
"sudo.log"

grep "sudo" *

If it shows up, you can edit the file that it is in. Remove or comment
(with #) the line(s) that has/have sudo... in it, and that should be it.
Unless I am way off!

yes and I like it that way. The minute M$ starts making apps for Linux I
have a feeling we'll be right back to one of the original reasons I left
