Re: [newbie] monitor/video card screen distortion
Mandrake 7.1 seems better than the 6.5 version I replaced, but had the identical problem with the display skewed left. I simply reset the monitor display and after about 60 seconds it "takes" and seems to be holding. I had to change resolution to 800X600. Using Amdek 815E monitor and Erazor Victory video card in 166 Mhz AMD K5 system. Using switchbox to move back and forth the monitor, keyboard and mouse to the Windows 98 system and both handle the changes very well. All displays work just fine and dandy. Go with the simple solution and try that first before you mess with the LINUX files. I did that at first, silly me, with no success. Don't make it too hard on yourself unless you like pain. Hope this helps. B. B. Stanfield KC5PIY Romanator wrote: > > Hi Phil, > > What type of monitor and graphics card are you using? Re: [newbie] Ethernet problems.
Can you see your zip drive at all or just can't access it? If you don't see it at all, there is a thread just a couple of days ago that worked for me. Basically you have to manually enter the drive in the list and then tell the system to find it. It's a SCSI device on the parallel port. Not a big deal, modify two files and you're done. Worked good for me. Also, if you've got one of the later Mandrake CD's you can open the install, go to the section where it installs things like drives and simply answer yes to the SCSI question. It'll automatically set up your zip drive for ya'. If this is too much I can send you the details. My data is at work so can get it tomorrow if needed. You can do it, check the archives for the Newbies at the Mandrake site, it shouldn't be older than about a week. See ya' B. B. Stanfield KC5PIY A J Benamu wrote: > > I got my internet running... Re: [newbie] Aliases
put them in your /etc/aliases file. take a look in there and you will likely find some aliases pre-defined. the general format is ALIASNAME=ALIASVALUE (you don't have to capilize.) one good place to start is from any terminal, type: "help aliases" if your shell is bash (omit the quotes). hope that helps, -- Keith On Sun, 09 Jul 2000, you wrote: > Hi! John, you can go into KPPP setup and click on your intenet service so that edit becomes enabled. Click on edit you will see a tab that has IP, click that tab and you can put a check in the box for "dynamic IP address" this will allow the ISP server to assign an address each time you dial in. I am assuming you use a dial up modem because everyone I know that has a cable modem or DSL etc is on-line all the time and are asigned a static IP. I think that you should find it ok if you look around in setup, I hope I was clear enough to help. Dennis -- Dennis-Registered Linux User #180842

Though I had to tell Mandrake that I had a SCSI device (and IDE disk - still don't understand that, waiting for anyone that does) to detect my CD-ROM... doing nothing special other than a full development install detected the card and propoerly installed the emu10kwhasit drivers. I get sound effect, I can play music... I *CAN'T* use the daughter board (the 'live drive')... though Lothar is helpful enough to tell me it's there. Of course, it doesn't need to happen too soon, I still need to test at the end of the next week - and temporarily leaving quake was one of the reasons I nuked my windows partition. ;) From time to time I find calculated destruction more effective than willful resolve. That should be: "imwheel -k" in your Autostart folder There are a few other things I've had to do to get imwheel to work. First, edit /etc/X11/XF86Config: Find the lines follwing Section "Pointer" Change the line that says Protocol "PS/2" to Protocol "imps/2" Comment out the two lines using a # at the start of the line Emulate3Buttons Emulate3TimeOut 50 Add a line: ZAxisMapping 4 5 If you have a serial mouse, set the protocol line to "IntelliMouse" or "Auto". Don't add the line Buttons 3 to the XF86Config file like the doc says. It caused my PS/2 Intellimouse wheels buttons to act like left and middle click. Am trying to run the new Drak tools with Mandrake 7.1. All were installed by rpm and no dependancy problems showed. Drakfont works fine and is a nice step towards beautifying my desktop. This is so weird. So many people have had problems with the SB Live cards. I've got one, and it worked out of the box with both 7.0 and 7.1. Only problems I've ever had (with both) is that I can't get music (sound fx is fine) with Doom or Heretic. Am I just lucky? ;-) -- /\ Dark>

Hi Phil, What type of monitor and graphics card are you using? And, what is the resolution and amount of colors on your color palette? Re: [newbie] partition (drive) access (Dana)
Charles, I just repartitioned that drive that I was having problems with. I put the swap partition at the end of the drive and the windows partition at the beginning. All of my problems have disappeared. Windows always recognizes that drive now. Maybe it's because it is a large drive, I don't know. I just know that that solved my problems. Running dual with Windows 98 SE, and ML 7.0. Re: [newbie] Who needs the SuperUser File Manager?
Hi, I pretty much do what Paul does, except I either go to a Alt-Cntrl-F1 and log in as root and do what I need to do from command line or in midnight commander or just go to Gnome ... I use Gnome exclusively for root stuff and use KDE for user stuff. Simple stuff, like moving mp3s and other files to archives on a windows partition, I su in terminal window or use kfmsu whichever I am in the mood for. I have even been known on occasion to su in terminal and run gnorpm to install certain small rpms right in KDE. The beauty of Linux is in its diversity. There is no one way to do something that has multiple ways of doing it and still be rightit is a matter of preferencean individual thing. Re: [newbie] partition (drive) access (Dana)
Dana Windows could care less when you install it or were you install it. On diferent drives and systems I have bootable Win partitions on the beginning, middle, and ends of the drive mixed in between BeOS, Linux and multiple versions of Win. Win might like to think it is the boss but what it doesn't know won't hurt it. Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
I was fooling with the networking configurater and all of a sudden from having a perfect Kppp modem set up I started getting exactly as described below. So I went back in and took out all of the network config stuff and rebooted and voila! I have my connection back. My suggestion is to go into Drakconf and make sure all of the networking config is blank with the exception of your NIC card config. The "routing and gateway" try blank as well as anything else. I have'nt figured just how but somehow the loop back or something is trying to talk to itself. PPP0 can be configured too if you want. Re: [newbie] Need Help with USB Modem
Joseph The fact that your Viking modem is offered in both a Win and Mac version leads me to believe that though you tecnically have an external modem it is still a Win Nomodem. If it is a real modem it should be listed under devices and in kppp there would be a listing for acmo. Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
I too have been battling a modem install under 7.1 all weekend. Tried all the timeout tricks on this list, tried the noauth option - still no go. In the end i had to download a program called qppp i think it was, and that did the trick once it was configured. But using either ppp under Linux conf, or gnome ppp, ( i installed from 2 cd iso set - maybe kppp does not come on that ? ) the ppp daemon died always. I think it seemed to be a problem with the PAP config, howver that seems to work fine under the program i downloaded. Any other battles like this ? Alan, Thanks. I am able to reformat under Windows and copy files to it, but whenever linux is run, Windows loses it. It is strange. Like I say, it seems like a m$ bug of some sort. [newbie] monitor/video card screen distortion
Hi all, I have just installed LM 7.1 on my AMD K6-2 500 MHz. I am having trouble with screen distortion, mostly on the left hand side of the screen. I have a generic Voodoo Banshee video card which the OS has had no trouble recognising. Do I need to reconfigure the monitor or video card in some way? Thanks in advance for the help!

[newbie] RPM failure/coredump suggests GetRight!]
The word I received is that it isn't the linux fault for working with dialpad but the website itself! Dialpad's server identifies what type of browser and operating system you have. With that information, the server supports your profile unless it is linux. I don't if the reason they do not is because of a lack of "standard" driver support or what. I am personally attempting to find away around this problem. I think that maybe a client/server program may need to be created that interface dialpad with everyones' computer. a sort of "box" that has set drivers to use for dialpad to execute from their website. The client program or what I call the "box" will have the individual settings and binaries of the linux computer that is installed that are necessary to access and use the soundcard. But I actually think all of that isn't necessary and that maybe another website can be put together locally or through a default server that will be setup as a "gateway/portal", a "mirrored" website with one exception: The website will say yes for support of javascript/java for linux. As everybody knows, Linux Netscape 4.72 and Netscape 4.73 support java and javascript fully. Give me time and I'll let you know what I come up with in a little bit. Is there legallity issues? I don't know but I feel that if you signed on to a website that promise you it's services, there shouldn't be anything wrong with "fixing" any problem yourself that keep you from using those same services. ---Sincerely, Altoine "T. Re: [newbie] Hard drive compromised by Mandrake install
Hi Graham - your problem happened to me a week ago. It seems that when I was deciding how big the Linux partition was going to be I thought the size recommended was a mite to small. So I went for a much larger size. What seems to happen is when you get to creating the swap file the software has to pinch some space from the windows partitions. This has the efffect of corrupting the disk. Like you tried to sort it out with Partition Magic with the assistance of their help desk but to no avail. PM would not allow me to even get into the program to sort it. I fiddled around with Fdisk etc., but to no avail. In the end, and in desperation, I bought a new HDD transferred as much as I could from the old, i.e.Windows stuff. Then from the new HDD used PM on the corrupted HDD. It worked a treat and the disk is now clean. I shall put Mandrake 7.1 when I can get hold of a copy. Hope this is of some help. It's at least as easy if not easier to delete your harddrives with a graphical frontend than it is by typing rm / as root, and besides typing rm / will ask you at every file if you want to delete or not and the standard setup of kfmsu asks only once! So it's a whole lot unsafer to use kfmsu than to use a terminal. And really, how often do you need access to the su FM? There really isn't that lot to copy/delete/whatever as root. Re: [newbie] PCTEL linmodem driver
Here is a FAQ from the PCTel web site. To me it says that you have a Win NoModem but you can judge for yourself. Can I use my modem with Operating systems other than Windows 95? Yes! PCTEL HSP technology operates in all Windows operating systems. These include Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows CE. PCTEL currently has no plans to run on the DOS, UNIX, or Linux operating systems. We support most DOS based programs in the DOS Box under Windows 95. I dont think I'm the original John and I dont have a 6Ghz drive. However I do have Linux Mandrake 7.0 Deluxe installed on a P 200 MMX 80M Ram, 4GB drive. Got the Video, Sound, NIC, & Modem all working. Got connected to my ISP using Netscape. So far I'm pretty impressed. My questions are with Adobe Acrobat Reader V4.0. I dont understand well how TAR and gzip works. Do you have to unarchive and also uncompress the files or what? Again I'm a Linux newbie. I also have a graphical utility called "Archiver" which seems to be able to view the compressed file contents but seems to have a problem extracting out to a new folder at /home/popi/desktop/Acrobat . On one attempt it locked up the computer and I had to hard restart. Also does my copy of this have a DNS server available? Also is the host name aliase in DrakeConf Network in any way a netbios computer name ? And is there a way it can have a netbios name as well as a host name? Also Do the extra 2, 3, 4 desktops take up extra memory? If so how do I close them so number one desktop has all to itself?

John, Ensure that have created a separate partition for Linux. MDK7.0 will create dual boot loader called lilo. After installing MDK7.0 and the the computer reboots, in DOS, a lilo prompt will appear. If you want to boot to your Windows 95 partition, type in: dos If you want to boot to your Linux partition, type in: linux There is a default setting of 5 seconds to boot automatically to Linux which can be changed later. Thanks. I just downloaded the same RPM from several different places (I searched the name in Lycos), and guess what? NONE of them work! They all say "execution of script failed"! Re: [newbie] mouse driver and CD-ROM problems
Hi Roman, I have MDK7.1 and noticed that when I selected Intellimouse PS/2 it jumped across the top of the screen. If you encounter this, hold down the following keys: Cntrl+Alt+Backspace This should get you back to the kde prompt and log in again. The sensitivity settings are well... very sensitive. Personally, I keep the settings low or off. Using RpmDrake When using Rpmdrake: A) Single click on the icon and choose the file of interest and click on the install bar B) You will be prompted by small window asking you to insert cdrom1. C) If you do not place the installation CD in the tray, your rpm file will not install D) Try not to double-click too fast because it will call up an installation from cdrom1, cdrom2, If you have overclicked, close the cdromx windows prompt Check to see if your mouse is supported on the linux-mandrakesoft.com web page. [Cooker] ANNOUNCE: KDE Snapshot Binaries available 2000-07-08
VERY IMPORTANT: THESE BINARIES ARE CREATED FROM THE CVS AND MAY NOT BE IDENTICAL TO THE BETA THAT WAS RELEASED. THESE ARE NOT OFFICIAL KDE BINARIES. (DEVELOPERS: The date in kapp.h is changed to 2708). A new version of the KDE Snapshot binaries are available at us.mandrakesoft.com. Please read the README file in the same directory. Just in case you missed it "READ THE README" prior to doing anything! If you need help installing please go to www.kde.org and look for directions. MANDRAKE, REDHAT, and other RPM based system users should update to the RPM's with this build. This is extremely important and will save you problems as we move forward. The file locations will change with my next build and if you are using the tar binaries you will have more work. The RPM's will do all the needed work for you. These binaries are built from CVS as of 08 July 2000 at 06:00am Eastern Standard Time (-0500). Please bring all install questions to the un-official kde-alpha list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] These binaries are built with QT 2.1.1 (-3mdk if you are a mandrake rpm user). You must have qt 2.1.1 with jpeg support compiled. Get it in the same directories as the packages or at any Mandrake-devel mirror. These files are available via ftp from: ftp://us.mandrakesoft.com/pub/kde or via http at: http://us.mandrakesoft.com/~molnarc (follow links for kde2 Alpha binaries) You will also be able to find these at (after a few days): http://www.htw-dresden.de/~s2697 The rpm's are also available on any Mandrake-devel mirror (cooker), if you install on Mandrake please make sure you get the kde2and1scripts.rpm as well. You will have to do a --force on this one. The RPM installs have been tested by me on a Mandrake 7.1 machine. They have also been reported to work on all other distributions. The rpm's are built with Mandrake 7.1. If you are not running the most recent version of rpm, I would suggest an upgrade. If you are running prior Alpha's I highly recommend you update. There are a lot of fixes and some structural changes in the packages. You will also find Source tar.gz's in the same directory. -- --- Christopher Molnar Mandrake Software Hartford, CT USA (860)956-9408 [EMAIL PROTECTED] "It said uses Windows 95 or better, so I loaded Linux!"

Hi Charles, Yes, my provider helpdesk says they do use PAP. Pls excuse unclear wording in my letter. As for trying each and any setting in all their combinations... well, I would prefer to know what I am doing and why, and my time is somehow limited... That's why I paid for "official" Mandrake hoping I would get some E-mail support. Oh yes. Besides, IMHO default configuration should work or at least be not too far from working one. And - yes, I do know about help button ;) in more than just one or two different systems... Didn't find right answer there but sure tried before asking Support (which didn't answer) and now asking this group. As well as did several web searches and found lot's of questions about the same problem but quite few real answers... My guess is that lot's of potential Linux users might be scared away and not asking/trying anymore after being unable even do this simple thing - connect to their Internet providers using default (or close to default) configuration and methods. Thanks for trying to help, anyway. Re: [newbie] Modem Problems
When I first started using Linux almost a year ago, like everyone else I tried using kppp. I found it generally frustrating and useless, especially trying to configure a PAP script thing that worked. I gave up on that. My only suggestion to others with kppp problems is: dump it and use wvdial. wvdial is easy to install and use. The program senses what kind of handshake your provider wants and keeps you connected. Since wvdial is not on the Mandrake cd's you will have to download an rpm version (I had to do this using Windows when I started with Mandrake). I forget the URL but a search at Google for "wvdial" will lead one to water. Now I have my computer configured to dial up when I boot Linux, and it works like a charm. Harry I might also help us to know what ISP you use. You can not simply take the word of the person you spoke to at your ISP that PAP is "acceptable". They either use the PAP protocol or they don't. 5 will get you 10 that if you tried each of the other settings as well as increasing the time-out value you Would find one that worked and from your log that is your problem. As for FAQ, when you were setting up your connection did you happen to notice a button in the bottom corner of the window labled Help and if you did, did you bother to use it.? Re: [newbie] partition (drive) access
When I installed Linux, I created two partitions, one a 256mb partition for swap, and a second large partition for Windows D: The Linux partition is ahead of the Windows partition on the physical device. I think this is giving Windows a hard time reading the D: partition, which is after swap on the physical device. I can read all of the files from the D: partition in linux as DOS_hdc2...but can't access them from Windows. Guess it's another m$ heartache. I haven't changed any other kppp parameters besides Account name, Provider phone No., two DNS server addresses given by provider, my username and password. [newbie] mouse driver and CD-ROM problems
Hi everyone, I am a total newbie, so, please, don't kill me for questions which might seem so easy. Thanx in advance. :-) I just installed Mandrake 7.0 and wanted to find my way round in KDE as I discovered that the mouse cursor is sometimes jumping around the screen and behaving as if I were pressing buttons, which I am not. So I tried to configure some other driver. I looked into DrakConf where I started Hardware Configuration (Lothar) but it only gave me info about the mouse, not letting me change anything. Therefore I clicked the 'K', settings, input devices, mouse, but I only can change the sensitivity (and switch left/right) there. Desperately I went into RpmDrake to look for some package which might help me. Under System Environment, Base, I found the package mouseconfig and I tried to install it. A message showed up asking me to insert the CD named installation. It was there, so I clicked OK, but it said it can't find the file and is exiting. (BTW: Funny that after the error message the mouseconfig package disappeared from the list and I had to quit and restart RpmDrake to see it.) I clicked onto the terminal emulation icon and started midnight commander from there (I know there's gotta be a better way) to look at the /etc/mtab and /etc/fstab files. I saw that the CD-ROM was configured for rw access, so I went to LinuxConf, filesystems, access local drive, clicked onto /mnt/cdrom. Tried to unmount and mount it back again several times (maybe shouldn't have done that), changed the type from supermount to iso9660 and back, changed misc, other options from fs=iso9660 to empty and back and still nothing. I can't access the CD-ROM drive under /etc/cdrom. To make things more interesting, another problem came up - now instead of trying to access the CD-ROM when accessing /etc/cdrom my floppy drive is being accessed... Can anyone please help ? Summary: 1. How can I change the mouse driver ? 1a. What mouse driver should I select if I have a WinMouse 4D+ mouse (model WWW-11) - it has four buttons and two wheels ? I currently have Generic Mouse (PS/2) selected - doesn't work properly. 2. What have I done wrong that when trying to access my CD-ROM (PlexWriter 8/4/32A) my floppy drive gets accessed ? My /etc/fstab looks like this: /dev/hda1 /boot vfat user, exec, conv=auto 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/DOS_hda5 vfat user, exec, conv=auto 0 0 /dev/hda6 / ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/hda7 swap swap defaults 0 0 /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount exec,dev,suid,rw,fs=iso9660 0 0 /etc/mtab looks like this: /dev/hda6 / ext2 rw 0 0 none /proc proc rw 0 0 /dev/hda1 /boot vfat rw,nosuid, nodev, conv=auto 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/DOS_hda5 vfat rw,nosuid, nodev, conv=auto 0 0 /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount rw,fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0 none /dev/pts devpts rw,mode0620 0 0 /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount rw,fs=iso9660 0 0 2a. What to do for my CD-ROM to work ? It hasn't worked since installation (I can't read iso9660 CDs). 3. Is there an easy way to change the screen refresh rate (e.g. I have 100Hz and want 85Hz) ? Sorry that the mail got so long... Thanx in advance. Roman

[newbie] Modem Problems
I have installed Mandrake Linux 7.1 for the first time. During installation it detected my external modem, and it did setup my internet connection. My problem is that when I login into kde desktop, and use kppp tool (there is a icon on the desktop which says Internet and it looks something like Windows dialup connection) to dial to internet I can’t connect. During connection process, there is a brief “handshaking” going on, and then my connection will drop and error appears “PPPD Demon Died Unexpectedly”. Anybody with any ideas ? Is there other way for me to connect to Internet ? Regards, Dariusz S Stochmal E-mail 1: [EMAIL PROTECTED] E-mail 2: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Home Page:http://www.stochmal.com/
