thanks, i'm glad too. i had a nightmarish weekend a week and a half ago,
where i couldn't get it installed no matter what. i'd run into one snag,
didn't feel like fixing it, reinstall, rinse and repeat.

so it's working the way i want it to now.

i'm still playing with window managers now, and the only thing i'm running
into with that is getting the same menus to show up in each window manager
(mostly enlightenment, which seems to be doing its own thing and not
telling me.) i remember seeing a post about that on here a while back, but
i deleted it.

also, is anyone else getting flaky sound running enlightenment? the sounds
seem to be a little scratchy now and then. i can use the same sounds in
other environments though, and they'll be just fine. perhaps it's the
resources that enlightenment uses, since it's obviously a bit more
intensive than other managers, but even with lots of goodies on, it still
runs pretty smooth. maybe the sound just isn't too refined under e yet.

RE: [newbie] Which Windows mail client is best for compatibility?

2000-07-10 Thread Viboon Chaojirapant

Hi,

I am looking to use email clients with compatible email
file format. The reason is that many a times, people I
know would write personal emails to me using my office
account. And since I have a habbit of keeping personal
emails (instead of deleting them), I want to be able
to put them (for example) in one Outlook .pst file and
bring them home to archive.

The problem with this is that it seems to me Outlook's
file format is pretty incompatible with NetscapeMail. :(

I have looked at Mahogany, but the Win32 version is,
IMHO, quite unpolished.

Cheers,
Viboon

[newbie] Re: Network Card Installation [Incident:mcpaid 000708-0020]

2000-07-10 Thread Alfred Basta

Guys I have a little problem configuring my 3Com 3CCFEM556B ( Lan+ Modem
card)
here is the history
remember I am very neww to Linux, I do not understand a lot of complex
Linux expressions.

here is the history of e-mails between myself and the Mandrake support guys
hopefully you can make it simple and help me fix my problem.

Thanks

I downloaded pcmcia-cs.06-jul-00.tar.gz to /usr/src
I used the right click --> Archiver.
from the Edit menu I choose Extract.I pointed to /usr/src, so that extracted
the file to a directory called pcmcia-cs-3.1.18.
Fron the Konsole I typed the following commands in order:

cd ..
cd usr
cd src
cd pcmcia-cs-3.1.18
make config

this exactly the response I got

  --Linux PCMCIA Configuration Script
The default reponses for each question are correct for most users.
Consult the PCMCIA-HOWTO for additional info about each option.
Linux source directory [/usr/src/linux]:

( I press Enter key)
Linux source tree /usr/src/linux is incomplete or missing !
See HOWTO for a list of FTP sites for current kernel sources

Configuration failed.

make:***[config] Error 1

Please tell me what did I do wrong.

Thanks

Alfred

You need to tar xvf a src.tar file. This will usually give you a subdir
with the source code of the program, which then needs to be
compiled. Always check the README an INSTALL files that are there.

it is. An Os where I can do that.

Re: [newbie] Wheel Mouse Driver

2000-07-10 Thread Ralph Day

Dave -

The problem is that imwheel writes a file /tmp/imwheel.pid where it keeps
track of the pid of imwheel so the "imwheel -k" command can be used to kill
a currently running imwheel and start a new one. imwheel has a nasty habit
of leaving its pid file around and it sets the user and group to the user
creating it and permissions to rw for only the user creating it. So it
sounds like you have an imwheel.pid file in /tmp that only root and read and
write.

You have a couple of options. Note this is all theory as I only run with
one user id and "su root" when I need to so I haven't had your problem.
That said, you can "chmod a+rw /tmp/imwheel.pid" and hope imwheel doesn't
manage to delete it or your system cleanup doesn't delete it. Or you can
try using "imwheel -p" to forego writing the pid file. Then you takes your
chances that you don't end up running two copies of imwheel and making
things act goofy. This might happen if you put it in your autostart folder.
A recent post about putting the imwheel command in the Xsession script might
be a better idea for this option. Lastly, you could write a script that
starts imwheel and does the "chmod a+rw /tmp/imwheel.pid" in case it is
freshly created and put that in your autostart folder.

[newbie] install problem: recognizing partitions

2000-07-10 Thread Jonathan Wolfgang

Hello,

I have a 20 gig Maxtor hard drive installed in my pc. The BIOS does not
recognize the full capacity of the drive so I am using their release of
EZ-Drive called MaxBlast. Naturally, Windows works fine. I have Partition
Magic 5.0 Pro and have partitioned the drive for FAT32 and also Ext2 file
systems. When trying to install Mandrake 7.1, the partition program only
shows one large FAT32 partition and a tiny 7 MB partition at the end of the
drive. I'm assuming this is due to MaxBlast being installed on the drive.
If I press the "restore partition table" button (in Expert Install Mode) the
Ext2 partitions are shown, but the remaining FAT32 partition is shown as a
blank or empty partition. I am not brave enough to continue the
installation because I am afraid that my Windows partition will be
destroyed.

I have checked for a BIOS upgrade, but the most recent one available is from
1997 and does not mention anything about large hard drive detection.

I have previously installed RedHat 6.1 with the exact same partitioning
scheme and it detected everything properly. I am wondering if there is any
command that can be passed to the installation routine that can help this.
Is there an updated boot disk that may help the partition detection?

Many thanks,

Jon

Ensure that you are logged in as 'root'. When you are prompted by a

No - I uninstalled it at once - I see no reason for such a 'tricky' program.
I am not running Linux, only to be able to get free windows programs.
I only tested the program to see, if it could do something else/better

RE: [newbie] Upgrading kernel

2000-07-10 Thread Mark Weaver

Al,

No, I didn't try the Emacs upgrade. I don't use emacs. In fact since I've
learned VI and MC and don't really have a need for emacs at all.

As far as LILO taking over for grub if I were going to do something like
this the first thing I would do is remove grub from, I'm assuming it
installed in the MBR the same way LILO does. Boot to a C:\ prompt and
type: fdisk /mbr= hit the enter key

then, boot into linux using your boot disk and install LILO. You can do
that once you've configured it with Linuxconf open a terminal window as
root and type: lilo . That will/should install LILO to the
MBR. AT least that's how it was done in RedHat. I can't think that it
would be too much different for Mandrake.

Hi Roman,

Hmmm...I used to have MDK7.0 installed but I am using MDK7.1 which
offers
a button called MouseDrake to change your mouse driver.

When you pressed Cntrl+Alt+Backspace, were you able to see your mouse
pointer?
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the "WinMouse 4D+" a.k.a.
"WWW-11".

I'm gonna have to let Charles, Denis or Paul take over. How about guys?

RE: [newbie] Server assign DNS address

2000-07-10 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Eh, not true..

PPP itself does not care or use dynamic DNS, but if you configure your
connection thru Linuxconf (which Drakconf invokes...)and enable dhcp, then
upon connection the if-up script modifies the appropriate Linux files to
configure the connection.

/etc/resolv.conf gets the dynamically allocated hostname as well as the
addresses of the server at ppp startup.

I've done this numerous times with Linux boxes set up as internet routers...
with
Dynamic Services such as @home, etc.

No, you're not wrong, but the default in a Mandrake installation is, that rm
is an alias to "rm -i", and thus rm asks, whereas the default of kfmsu is to
not ask, or maybe ask once for the whole files.

The syntax for specifying the HDD location of the os you want
to boot is a lot different with grub, but 'info grub' explains it
very well. Compared to other man and info pages, it gets an A+ in
my book. Have a look, I believe your questions will be answered.

[newbie] /dev/sda6 boot error

2000-07-10 Thread Victor Richardson

I have a system running 7.1 (current) that worked perfectly (I assume)
yesterday, when I turned it on this morning the system fails during the
"Checking root filesystem" portion of boot.

The error message is:

Checking root filesystem
/dev/sda6 contains a file system with errors, check forced.
Unattatched inode 24460

/dev/sda6: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCIES; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
(i.e. without -a or -p options)

[Failed]

*** An error occured during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D for normal):

Where can I find docmentation for FSCK or what should I do?

[newbie] System sounds

2000-07-10 Thread Hugo GONZALEZ

Hello everyone.

I'd like to thank everybody who helped me on kppp. This list is REALLY helpful and
supportive.

I now have another issue (I wouldn't call it a problem): At first, when I just
installed Linux and was able to boot it I thought the sound card was not detected at
all or at least not properly, because I wanted to enable system sounds but nothing
happened. So I went to drakconf and there was detected another soundcard (Don't
remember the name, Eqsonic (?), and I can't check it right now cause I am at work
right now). So I thought to set it up some other day. Then, one day, just for
curiosity, I wanted to see the cd player playing a cd even though I knew I won't hear
it. When the CD was being played I heard a very weak sound, almost imperceptible, from
my speakers, so I turned up the volume (by hardware dial) and I could listen the cd
perfectly

How come is that I can't hear the system sounds when I enable them?

Where do I control volume by software?

My sound card is a Creative SoundBlaster Infra128. I tried to use drakconf to configue
it as SounBlaster but couldn't make it work, after I set up the DMA, etc., an error
message appeared (I can check the error message tonight at home).

Thanks in advance.

[newbie] Adapter Help

2000-07-10 Thread Ronald Brown

Hi,

I have been having problems trying to connect to the Internet through
Mandrake 7.1.
Mandrake recognizes my NIC card and when it boots up eth0 is in the list
and everything is ok. I must be doing something wrong in the network
config files. I have used netcfg to edit it, but still nothing. Every
time I try to connect or ping a site, all I get is host unknown.

Is there a standard of IP addresses to use? I have used 192.168.1.1 and
still nothing. I have read all the docs, but still nothing. I have use
many examples from magazines and so on.
If anyone has this same problem or if anyone has resolved this issue,
please let me know.

I have a EnterNet SMC adapter. My provider is BellSouth and they don't
support Linux in any form or fashion. When I boot into Windows, I have
to connect from an icon on my desktop to establish the connection, but
in Mandrake, how do I startup my service without that icon? A newbie
question.

TIA,
Ron

RE: [newbie] Upgrading kernel

2000-07-10 Thread Wilson, Al

Mark, you have a good point about LILO. I will try installing LILO and then
upgrading. Do you know whether LILO will take over nicely from Grub if I
just run LILO?

After I switch to LILO, I shall try the upgrade again.

Just out of curiousity, did you try the xemacs upgrades from MandrakeUpdate?

Re: [newbie] Netscape problem

2000-07-10 Thread Joe Brault

Eugene and Seth

Not to worry, I had this problem yesterday when I installed my modem and was
able to fix it. Here's what you need to do:

1) You need to be able to connect to the Internet for starters (sounds like
both of you can). When you get connected wth KPPP goto the details on your
connection (found in the little window that shows you are connected) and you
will see your local IP and your IPS's IP, write both of these down, you'll
need them in a minute.

2) Open up your /etc/resolv.conf file and see what is contained inside.
For mine, I had no entries. In order to make mine work I had to add the
below lines:

search mc.net
[put your ISP's IP address here]

Once you have added this info to the file, you should be all set. Close
the file, exit all your Netscape windows if you have any open, and try
Netscape again. If this still doesn't work, try looking up your local ISP's
IP address and see if he has any others that can be used. Or you could
break down and call your ISP to get a list of IP's if he/she will give it to
you :)

I hope this helps. I'm at work now, so I don't have my files in front of me
to be able to supply you with specific examples, but i'll send some when I
get home tonight if you are still having trouble. Later-

Joe :)

In my fstab the cdrom statement looks like this:

/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

That works fine. If your CDRom is secondary master, the /dev/cdrom should
point to /hdb. Can you verify that this is the case by running

ls -l /dev/cdrom

If this fails, you should define a new link to it:

ln /dev/cdrom /hdb

(as root)

Good luck

Do you know what physical partition your E: disk is? Is it a logical
partition on HDA? A separate disk?

In case you are on mdk 7.1, you should be able to pull the files from
/mnt/WIN_e/linux.
Otherwise you will need to figure out what partition your E: disk is on,
run the "mount" command and see what directory it is mounted on.

If there is nothing there, go to /mnt, create a directory
(e.g. diske) and, as root, do mount /dev/hd /mnt/diske

Then you can copy the files from /mnt/diske/linux to the linux partition.

Hope this helps. If not, dump a listing of "mount" here, perhaps that
helps. You can do that by " mount > /tmp/dump" and pulling "dump" into a
mail (or copy it by hand).

Not that I am this smart, I just save mails:

You need to download the src.rpm for it, and then do something like

rpm --rebuild --target=i586 .src.rpm

and install RPMs package which will be created.

RE: [newbie] Upgrading kernel

2000-07-10 Thread Wilson, Al

Thank you, Charles.

I will have to wait till I get home to get the exact errors. The problem was
that the system would not boot. An entry had been added in the Grub list for
the new kernel, but when selected, booting would stop at some point along
the way. I was not able to boot from the rescue diskette, either. That is
why I re-installed. As I said, I will try upgrading tonight and see what
happens. Maybe I should learn to do it the proper way!

One interesting thing that I noticed on the last re-installation was that
part of the installation of the security programs actually worked. All the
other times, it would fail saying that it could not connect. This time, it
seems that most of the programs installed. The two openssh programs failed
due to some error reported by Mandrake.

Re: [Re: [newbie] LILO Mandrake 7.1]

2000-07-10 Thread Jaguar

Not true. Since patitioning occurs alot before installing the boot loader,
Linux has already NOT created the /Boot patition independant of the loader.
It is at the end of the install you actually choose your loader, either LILO,
or GRUB. Therefore I believe the Kernel its self is responsible for the 1024
limitation, or in MDK 7.1's case non-limitation.

Re[2]: [newbie] mouse driver and CD-ROM problems

2000-07-10 Thread Roman Korcek

Hey Roman,

Thanx very much for your reply. Though you offer solutions, they're
not quite for my problems. I'll try to write more clearly this time.

1. I have a "WinMouse 4D+" a.k.a. "WWW-11". I am using the "Generic
Mouse (PS/2)" driver. With this driver the mouse cursor sometimes
jumps to the upper right hand corner and also behaves as if I would be
clicking the mouse buttons. I think it is because I selected the wrong
driver.

How do I *change* the mouse driver, please ?

No re-login, login as another user, login as root, login in console
mode, login to KDE - nothing helps.

2. And second - I would love to access my CD-ROM, but it doesn't work.
A copy of my fstab and mtab files is included several lines below (in
my original mail).

I can't mount the CD-ROM neither using (I think it was like this)
mount -t iso9660 -o user,ro,exec /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
nor using "supermount" as filesystem - as it was defined after
installation.

My CD-ROM is on secondary master, if it helps.

If you know how to help, thanx in advance.

Roman

no real patches, more like new versions best thing to do would be to get
the full install, download or a cd.

just check out the mandrake home page

[newbie] Access DOS files from LINUX

2000-07-10 Thread Gil Baron W0MN

I moved this to newbie list where it is probably more fitting.

I do not know how to get the files I downloaded (to my E:\linux folder to
copy them to the root so that I can proceed. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. I am sure there is some simple command but I do not know what
it is.

This has to be done from the command line. xfree86 and all other GUIs do not
exist on my system. I am trying to add them. the files I wish to copy are
the xfree rpms.

Hello all,

I see to be having problems installing Adaptec's RAID card under Mandrake

The supplied .rpm files from DPT's web site do not seem to work properly as
I am unable to see the card or load the driver properly. Has anyone
experienced any problems similar to mine who could help me out?

I guess they call it the cheap way around porting a windows program to
linux. I have decided to stay away from any further prgs in a format
that must run through wine.

Seeing I can't find any help with the problem I will just do a full

Re: [newbie] Server assign DNS address

2000-07-10 Thread Ralph Day

pppd does allow this. I don't use kppp so I'm not sure how to specify it
using kppp. But if there is a place to specify additional options for pppd
try adding "usepeerdns". This will make pppd add the DNS entries received
from your ISP to your /etc/resolv.conf if no nameserver entries exist,
otherwise it will overwrite the first two nameserver entries in resolv.conf.

Re: [newbie] Wheel Mouse Driver

2000-07-10 Thread Ralph Day

Glad I could help - its what the newbie list is all about. This one drove
me crazy for a while too. I haven't had any X crashes with imwheel yet but
I'm on LM 7.1 now which comes with a newer version of imwheel. I believe
the ability to move the cursor around the console is a function of gpm, not
X or imwheel so its probably unrelated to the crash.

Re: [newbie] New Partition Question

2000-07-10 Thread Ralph Day

If this is LM 7.1, there is a diskdrake bug that changes the first extended
partition type from Windows Extended to Linux Extended making it unreadable
from Windows. See http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/heliumlast.php3 for more
info and a script that might fix it. I tried the script, but it failed for
a reason I couldn't figure out. So I picked out the fdisk commands from the
script and just typed them in by hand to change the partition type back to
Windows Extended.

[newbie] Install Prob

2000-07-10 Thread Dave Naylor

Hi

I tried installing Sawfish .30 on my Mandrake 7.1 system this morning but
it seems to require libreadline.so.3 whereas I have so.4 installed. I
wrote to the Sawfish author who tells me that it's because it was built on
Red Hat 6.2 which uses so.3 unlike Mandrake which has so.4. He suggests
rebuilding the RPMs.

Sorry for being a newbie, but what the heck do I have to do?

Re: [newbie] LILO Mandrake 7.1

2000-07-10 Thread Wienand Drenth

Thanks. I already did something like that, see below, but was having some
problems. I partitioned by hd as follows:

8 GB Fat32
15 MB /boot
12 GB /
9 GB Fat32

Hence, the 2nd Fat32 partition was my D: disk under windows and all worked
well. Untill I boot Linux, do something in Linux and reboot in windows. Then
the 2nd Fat32 partition isn't any more... How is this possible?
Therefore I have planned to reorder my hd as follows:

15 GB Fat32 (possibly a C: and D: station)
15 GB Linux (/boot, / /.)

This means Linux to start beyond the 1024 cylinder, and it would be nice if
Mandrake 7.1 incorporated the new Lilo (21.4.4). Is there possibly another
solution?

Re: [newbie] LILO Mandrake 7.1

2000-07-10 Thread Mark Weaver

I don't think so. As near as I can tell, and I'm running 7.1 it's the same
old LILO. Steady and true. The easiest thing to do to overcome this
obstacle is to make a partition "/boot" your first partition. Make it
about 10MB in size and you are then free to make the rest of the
partitions as large as you want. LILO will load fine and be happy.

My partition(s) are laid out like this:

/boot = 10MB
/ = 4GB

LILO is very happy this way on large drives.

work the fist time. I think I did something wrong. But the second time it
worked like a charm. When I was done I just rebooted the system and it
booted the new kernel like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Re: [newbie] Wheel Mouse Driver

2000-07-10 Thread John Couturier

Here is how I got it to work in 7.0. Upgrade to the latest version of imwheel then
edit /etc/X11/Xsession and you'll see
"(fg) Starting imwheel from here works" around line 78. I commented out the 3 lines
under that and just put "/usr/X11R6/bin/imwheel -k" above it and it works. I think
the key is upgrading to the latest version.

Hope this helps.

Re: [newbie] LILO Mandrake 7.1

2000-07-10 Thread Charles A Edwards

As far I as know because using LILO requires a boot partition LILO still
suffers from the 1024 limit.
GRUB which is the default in 7.1 does not reguire a boot partition and
allows for Linux to be installed anywhere and on any size hd.
