Daciajust a guess, but it sounds like you installed the
4.0 version of XF86 (all of the problems you list sound
Xserver related), if so I suggest you try switching to the 3.6
version first, before wiping ths disc and reinstalling 7.0.

Hello
In my experience diskdrake cannot do non-destructive partitioning.
Somebody at Mandrake and/or Macmillan obviously agrees because PM
and BM are included in one of the Macmillan 7.1 offerings.

Working fine for me...did you uncomment the various choices in the
portsentry.conf file?
I'm using Mandrake 7.1 and it works fine...I added the command lines (

Re: [newbie] Ethernet problems.

2000-07-16 Thread frank

sounds like a tech who needs a bit more training or experience...i'll try to
point you to the where and how of it:

1. be in root to accomplish the following:
2. open drakconf
3. click on network setup
4. click on networking
5. click on basic host information
6. click on adapter 1
7. select the enabled button
8. select the Dhcp button
9. type in the Primary name + domain (this is something like
cm55631.cox-internet.com the cable company has given you this name)
10. make up a name for your computer and fill in alias (if you want to)
11. leave IP address blank
12. Netmask is optional - likely is 255.255.255.0
13. Net device ought likely be eth0
14. Kernal module ought to have been filled by mandrake during install
15. click accept to close the host basic configuration window

16. click on Name server specs (DNS) in the prior window
17. fill in the IP numbers for server 1 and 2 if cox has given you these...if
they've not, then you likely do not need them...IP numbers are quadsets of
the form: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
18. click accept to close that window

19. click routing and gateways on the prior window
20. click on "set defaults"
21. fill in the Default gateway quadset number...cox has given you this...
22. select "enable routing"
23. click on accept
24. click quit on immediately prior window
25. click quit on next prior window
26. click quit on the last window left open...another small window will
open...
27. click on "activate the changes" in this small window...

you ought now be online...kppp is not necessary for a cable modem; its used
for dial-ups...hope this gets you moving in the right direction...

delaying eth0 initialization, followed by 'FAILED'. I also tried manually
setting the IO and irq for it taken from my winbloz portion of my computer,
but that didn't work either, just gives the same message as above. I even
went as far as to add a line to my lilo.conf file to see if I could assign

After my troubles with 7.1 I have about the same feeling. I am doing this as
a learning experience and something to play with. It is obvious that for

Install trouble and lack of applications are the villains. Even if install
trouble vanished the lack of applications that interface with the rest of

The lack of applications PERIOD for my ham radio uses alone mandates windows

execute things), add an xhost +localhost see if that helps you.

[newbie] Multiple questions on Mandrake 7.0

2000-07-16 Thread Andrew Miller

1) Having trouble getting proper configuration for a 3Com 10/100 LAN
CardBus PC Card 3CCFE575BT on my Thinkpad 760 XL. Under KDE, the
card works correctly for a couple of minutes and then just stops.
Pinging the machine over my local lan then gets no response and I
can't get to the internet via my DSL connection. Works better under
Gnome desktop, but only for longer. Any suggestions? Is there a
driver out there for this device that I can put on a floppy and copy
to the Thinkpad?

2) I have two Macs on the same LAN as the Thinkpad and I want to copy
files from one of them to the Linux Thinkpad to use it a a web
server. Both are configured with IP addresses and file sharing is
on. HOw do I get the Thinkpad to see them so that I can move files?
Or conversely, can I get the Macs to see the Thinkpad and drag and
drop files to it from them?

3) I tried to upgrade to Mandrake 7.1 by burning the two 7.1 iso
images found on line from the Madrake site. The install halts early
with a message saying unable to start ram disk, or something close to
that. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

RE: [newbie] Network Card trouble

This does not sound like a Linux problem.

Are you sure that the BIOS is not set to a power saving mode that shuts off
power to the PCMCIA devices?

This is highly probably and would account for what you see...

RE: [newbie] Problem !

2000-07-16 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

It helps to understand the nature of the error message...

The Kernel Panic error indicates that Linux is unable to utilize the swap
partition you created, when it needs it.

You have a problem with the SCSI bus itself... that is the cable going from
your SCSI adapter to your SCSI drive(s).

The fact that formatting fails also indicates this. (assuming you do not
have a failing hard drive.)

You need to make sure that you have your temination set up properly.

Does the last drive on the cable have a terminator on it?

Is it the ONLY drive with a terminator on it?

Is the SCSI card terminated as well?

You should immediately check this AND replace your scsi cable too.

Lastly, terminator "power" sometimes causes problems with older drives.

Usually only one or two devices supply terminator power (voltage to the SCSI
bus' "pull up" resistors) but not all of them. Most devices arrive with
terminator power ENABLED, so if you have more than one device on the cable,
it's a good idea to disable terminator power on all but two.

[newbie] Using PM Special Edition with Windows NT4 SP5

2000-07-16 Thread Romanator

Hi,

I would like to resize my partitions but my earlier email answers were
deleted during reformatting.
When I rebooted my computer with the Partition Magic Special Edition, I
get an error 101 or 102.
In other words, no partitions can be identified.

I know that it can be done.

Should I insert the MDK7.1 installation CD and delete the Linux
partition first?
Or, should I boot up with a Windows 98 startup floppy, and type in:
fdisk/MBR
to get rid of Grub or lilo, reboot, and then delete the partition?

[newbie] After installing Linux Grub ->Windows NT4 Event Viewer Gives Startup Error

2000-07-16 Thread Romanator

Hi again,

This may be off topic but I'm not sure, and it's directed to any one
that has a WinNT4 partition. After partitioning and installing Linux
I get this startup error. It shows up in the Event Viewer that's driving
me crazy.

The ZipToA service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.

Is this due to the Linux installation and Grub?

[newbie] Linksys LNE100TX Nic under Mandrake 7.1

2000-07-16 Thread Michael Valley

I have a dual boot system running Win98 and Linux. Recently, I
upgraded my network card to a Linksys LNE100TX(ver. 4) and then upgraded
from SuSE Linux 6.4 to Mandrake 7.1.

Neither version of Linux will install my network card. Checking PCI
devices shows an Ethernet card present but the vendor is unknown. I've
tried all the tricks: compiling the latest tulip driver (I get a ton of
errors), changing network settings, changing BIOS settings, etc. No luck.

Has anyone had any luck with this card? I have scanned all the support
pages and news groups I can find, but to no avail. They all mention
compiling the driver, but I can't seem to make that work. Any help I can
get would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Mike Valley

YES!!, (if I may jump in here) 7.1 has been THE most problematic install I
have ever done in about a dozen different flavors and versions, including
FreeBSD and Debian. I think Mandrake ought to stop with making it easier and
fancier and get it back to stable and less bug-ridden. This is after all,
Linux's strong suit. At $50.00+ I am seriously dissapointed w/ Mandrakesoft
and Macmillan. This is my third Mandrake, and probably my last. Don't court

Re: [newbie] X window

2000-07-16 Thread Victor Richardson

I've got a S3 Trio3D in an IBM Netfinity 3000 that I have never got to
work in anything but 1024x768 Frame Buffer mode, and unfortunately I fiddled
with /etc/lilo.conf one to many times without an emergency disk and had
to re-install Mandrake 7.1. It has never worked again even though I followed
the same config again.
Anyway, I've attatched IBM's directions for setting it up in Frame Buffer
mode, but if you are looking of better performance... I suugest that you
buy another card and save yourself the months of sleepless nights trying
to make it work, the saved time really makes this cheaper.
Just substitute in the latest 3.3.6-x version (not 4.0.x, a whole diff
game):

Appendix A: Installing the VESA/Frame Buffer server
After the installed system has restarted, at the boot: prompt, type linux
text.
With the system started in command mode, login as root.
Mount the Red Hat Linux 6.0 CD and install the frame buffer server package
by typing the following text:
# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
# cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
# rpm -ivh XFree86-FBDev-3.3.3.1-49.i386.rpm
4. Save the current symbolic link by running # mv /etc/X11/X /etc/X11/X.old.
5. Create a new symbolic link by running # ln -s
../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev /etc/X11/X.
6. Edit /etc/lilo.conf to add a new entry for the frame buffer server by
copying the existing entry. Only add a vga=773 line after the image line and
change the label so that it is unique to other entries. The following is an
example of a kernel entry with frame buffer server installed:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-15
vga=773
label=linux-fb
root=/dev/sdxx
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.5-15.img
read-only

Warning: Do not remove the existing entry. Do not make any changes to the
root line in the new entry. The first kernel entry in "/etc/lilo.conf" is
loaded by default. 773 indicates 1024 x 768 pixel density with 8 bit color
depth. For more information, see /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt
(kernel-source-2.2.5-15.i386.rpm package).

7. Update the master boot record and the LILO boot loader by running # lilo
-v.
8. Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to create a new section entry for the frame
buffer server under the Screen section. Copy the following example of a
Screen entry and make the necessary changes.

NOTE : and depend upon predefined strings in XF86Config. Replace
"" with the string following "Identifier" under "Device" in the Graphics
device section. Replace "" with the string following "Identifier" under
"Monitor" in the Monitor section.

Section "Screen"
Driver "fbdev"
Device ""
Monitor ""
Subsection "Display"
Modes "default"
EndSubsection
EndSection

9. Reboot the system and remove media.

10. At the LILO boot prompt, press Tab for kernel options or press Enter if
the new kernel was set as the default kernel.
11. After the system restarts in command mode, issue the startx command to
enter the X Window

Hope this helps, I'm trying to work up the guts to try X 4.0.1-2
after 4 months of trying with 3.3.6. Although, I did buy a $30 Permedia
II just in case.

I guess you should watch what you ask for : )

Anyway, Partition Magic has always been able to determine that Linux is
indeed ext2fs and can even create, move and resize that file type. It can't
however do anything with reiserfs, which is the new journaling filesystem
that you can optionally install for Linux. Partition Magic identifies that
type as '85' which I was wondering myself - hexadecimal??

Re: [newbie] MDK7.1 IDE Configuration Freezes During InstallationonDell Dimension XPS PII 200 MMX

2000-07-16 Thread Romanator

Dan,

I could not get MDK 7.0 installed. I did see some installation script
patches on the linux-mandrake.com web site. I was wondering if my IDE
configuration problem points to the way the hard drive is configured.
That is, two hard drives on separate buss lines. I'm glad that I wasn't
the only one experiencing this.
I still think the best way to isolate the problem is to strip down any
fancy configurations. Then, begin with a single drive, CD-ROM with Zip
drive(in my case), and proceed from there.

I will take notes. This may be easier to isolate the problem. I remember
a message pointing to a table. I have to check my older emails. When
Linux gets installed, I will add a step-by-step help file.

I have to admit, this has been an eye opening learning experience on
installation. Installations should be very transparent. And, we take
this for granted. I'll check up on the freezing business.

Cheers!

Roman

[newbie] Multiple Idenities Email

2000-07-16 Thread Anthony Huereca

Is there an email client and/or work around to kmail's lack of multiple
idenities? The client would have to be GUI based. Right now the only workaround
I see is to create some more users and have their only purpose being to collect
mail for me. That or change my idenity in the settings whenever I send out an
email. So is there an email client (other than Netscape) that'll let me do
this? Or am I going to have to wait till the next major release of Kmail comes
out (which will support multiple idenities)?

I have much the same problem. See my post on Expert. It stands to reason
they should test this better. The WORST thing that an happen in my opinion

I realize the y can't test all possibilities and maybe my video is unusual
but S3, gimme a break!

I NEED the upgrade for wheel mouse and my video but I guess I will have to
wait and hope they fix it in 7.2.

Or you can simply change the partition type of your extended partition
from 85 to 5 with the Linux fdisk program. That way PM should be able
to see the contents of your extended partition.

BTW: Why does Mandrake set the partition type of extended partitions
to 85?

Are you sure there's an audio cable from the CD player to your audio

No. Partition magic is distributed on the Deluxe (I think) package you can

Let me put this as gently as possible. You must be able to open a termial
window without shaking and vomiting from fright, and be able to say
something other than. "O my god! what does this do?" to be able to
appreciate the REAL power and STABILITY that is NORMAL and expected from
Linux. Since these things don't exist in the Windows world I'm really not
suprised to hear you say what you've said. You haven't yet swalowed the
last bite that Micr$oft has fed you.

You know...it's not polite to talk with your mouth full... :)

And please... take no offense at these ramblings, for that's all they are
and weren't meant, in any way to suggest that you've got an IQ less than
that of a piece of lunchmeat. I just couldn't help myself. I get silly
everytime I hear a Windows user wondering what all the hype is about
sitting behind their WINDOWS screen mailing to a LINUX mailing list!

I don't know...maybe it's just me. Either get in the water and test it and
then decide whether you like it or not, but please...don't sit on the wall
and say the swimming is terrible.

The message I get (using F12 knob) is : Kernel Panic. Scsi free: trying to free

Why not just make things easy on yourself and load an earlier version of
VI from an older Linux distro like RH6.0 or 6.1. Those didn't ship the
release of VI VIM that supported colored syntax. Would/might be a little
easier and less time consuming for you if you're not too familiar with VI

Re: [newbie] To Buy or not to buy

2000-07-16 Thread Dacia and AzureRose

Speaking from my experience I say that there is no
compelling reason to update if you are happy with your
current install. I made the leap to 7.1 last week and
have been plagued by problems ever since.

Mouse wheel refuses to work. Over all performance is
slow. Gnome and enlightenment crash when I try to
open netscape. GQphoto doesn't work. It leaves weird
artifacts on my desktop. My internet connection is
much slower then it was in 7.02. It went from average
70-80K to 15-25K download rates. Quake3 is slower and
more laggy. My mouse simply doesn't feel right.
Somethings different but I can't seem to get it to
feel comfortable to me.

Earlier this morning my girlfriend and I decided to
burn a CD of all our important files, wipe the whole
drive and re-install 7.02.

Thats my experience with 7.1. Yours will probably be
different.

answers the question of should I upgrade. Hopefully 7.1 will support S3
better. Or maybe I should get a new card. The AGP slot is easy to swap out.
Anybody know of a totally compatible video card that linux has no problems
with? Or any other suggestions would be helpful. I sending this out of a

I agree, I've been using Partition Magic for about a year now and it works
great! There is another option however; GNU parted. I haven't had the guts
to try it, but you can download it from the Mandrake cooker and give it try.

ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/cooker/Mandrake/RPMS/parted-1.2.4-1md

If you do try it, give a report on the list and tell how it works, k?

Someone has posted this question a couple of days ago and to be polite,
people have answered. I don't know how long you've been on this list,
but people will occasionally have a slip and forget to turn off html when
sending

what
this is about.

If your partition is smaller than 2 GB, a dd if=/dev/hda of=/mnt/hdb/output-file
will do it.

This will create the file output-file in /mnt/hdb. You should take
care to save the file (output-file) in a directory which is not on the
same drive though.

If your partition is bigger than 2 GB, you're in bad luck with dd. It
can only read/write files upto 2GB max (currently).

To still be able to backup your whole drive, first save the parition
entries to a file. sfdisk -lx will print out all the entries. Then
something like "tar spcfvI /tmp/MyBackupFile.tar.bz2 -C / .
--exclude=/tmp/MyBackupFile.tar.bz2". This will create a bzip2'd tar
file containing all your files in /tmp called MyBackupFile.tar.bz2.
If this still results in a file bigger than 2 GB (tar can also not
handle this), think about tar'ing all the dirs seperately.

Thanks Alan,

This makes sense to me. I thought it was
such a nuisance to have to scroll to the
bottom of a message (most of which I had
read earlier) just to get to the new post.

I will continue to do this. I will not
change :)

That was my thought as well. It made
sense to me...it was doing unto others

inefficiency..with so many messages

very inefficient to have to scroll

An added note on PM. If you let the Mandrake installation create your
Linux partitions then PM will see them all as 1 Type 85 partition and you
will not be make any changes to the partitions using PM. You will instead

Your box is expecting "~~~" and is only getting "~". Changing the expect
string to "~" may work for you, it didn't for me. What I had to do, was
find a pattern in the garbage sent, and set my expect string to that. In
your case it looks like the pattern is "}4}", in my case it was "}9}".

I recently experimented with Genome. The open applications should be in the
taskbar at the bottom, on the right side. I had problems with the screen

Where (almost) all the other themes are at: http://www.themes.org.
But there aren't any GNOME themes at all. GNOME is using GTK, so one
point would be gtk.t.o. And because GNOME doesn't have a window
manager of its own, another point to lookat is
http://.themes.org, so for sawfish that would
be http://sawfish.themes.org, or for Enlightenment
http://e.themes.org or whatever wm you use.
