2000-08-04 Thread =*=

I am not sure what you mean here. Do your modem lights
indicate that you are connected? And the problem is that
Netscape "cannot find" anything? In this case it means you
might need to check your file /etc/resolv.conf to see if the
DNS nameservers are listed. I mean those xxx.xxx.xxx.x type
numbers your ISP gives you. Do #cat /etc/resolv.conf in an
xterm and see what happens.

[newbie] Lost CD-ROM Drive in Mdk 7.1

2000-08-04 Thread Bob Howard

List Members,
I installed Mdk 7.1 to its own hard drive just fine, but the
second CD-ROM cable was accidently disconnected before the
install.

There are two ATAPI CD drives... an R/W and a plain R/O both
on the second ide controller

It sees my 'master' CD-RW just fine and has an icon on the K
desktop, but does not see my
other CD-ROM (slave) nor can I access it.

I have read the man (8) mount doc, but can't seem to get the
hang of getting the CD-ROM mounted and functional at the same
time as the CD-RW.

What must I do to have both on the K desktop?

Re: [newbie] MDK7.1 Developer installation disabled my sound but workstation works okay

2000-08-04 Thread Amien Salie

Peace

I haven't done that myself.

If you really want to find out what the problem could be, why not
do a normal install and then install each devel package one by one, until one
of them takes out your sound again ie using a process of elimination.

Another approach.because sound was affected, why not install all the
devel packages minus those development packages related to sound. If sound works
after doing this you have narrowed it down those packages, then install the
sound devel packages until sound is taken out again.

I am certain there are various other methods which you can use to approach this
situation.

In this way you can discover the "bug" and report it :)

What I am trying to say or get across here is that GNU/Linux is built on solid
Hacker Philosophy and I think it important for us here on the newbie list to
instill this philosophy at this level.

Ask not (only) what GNU/Linux can do for you,
but what you can do for GNU/Linux.

[newbie] Refresh rates / Screen quiver

2000-08-04 Thread Ian McLeod

I have heard through the grape vine that the refresh rates can sometimes
be off by 1Hz or so. Try your refresh rates and make sure they are set
correctly. You may have to go into the X config file, I am not sure how
to change it. I am trying to work this out myself.

And I thought monitors were meant to protect themselves from incorrect
refresh rates.

Any ideas people?

I had terrible problems getting Kppp to work. The problem was absurdly simple
to fix. Just increase the timeout on the kppp daemon. I use 150 as my
timeout, and it works fine. The program is a good one. But the defaults
don't work right. Stick in there.

[newbie] Netscape 4.74

2000-08-04 Thread RJS II

Hi,

An interesting point to whomever:

I tried to update (using DrakConf) to Netscape 4.74

This turned out to be a royal pain. First, I had conflict problems (I
use 7.1). Ok, I then did what I have had to do before and Gftp'ed the
three files (Common, Communicator and Navigator) and tried to install
them using Kpackage. No dice there either, conflicts again.

I finally got them to install by unchecking the "Check Dependancies" box
and replacing packages with the install.

All is fine, Netscape shows version 4.74 and all plugins work.
Unfortunately, the updater still says that I have to update these
packages. A glitch?

Anyway, I hope this is help to someone else who experiences the same
problem.

[newbie] LM 7.1 and KDE 1.90

2000-08-04 Thread dickon1

Hi guys

I finally got the LM 7.1 Essential Package. Installed without any hitch and
it seems to work well with the hardware that I have.

Wanted to try the new KDE 1.90. Got two sources, one of RPMs built for LM
and the other are the different tars. Can not install any of those because
of missing libraries which are to be found on CD2 which is supplied only
with the Power Pack or because those RPMs and tars needs some older
libraries which LM 7.1 does not have any more. Any suggestions how to get
around it and have KDE 1.90 installed properly?

And, for the stupid newbe part - Once all those components are finally
correctly installed, how do i put it in the path so that i'll have a choice
between starting KDE1 Or KDE1.90? The graphic interface starts
automatically and i'd like the choice of KDE1.90 to be listed among all the
others.

"Warning SERVER specification missing in Card database Trident TGUI9660
(generic) (line 2513)
> Press enter to continue or ctrl-c to abort"

I've tried manually inputting the monitor settings but no luck.

[newbie] ATI XPert 98

2000-08-04 Thread John

Has anyone had success configuring X (3.3.6) for an ATI XPert98 AGP card in
Mandrake 7.1? Is the card supported in X (4.01)?

I had no problems with Mandrake 7.0.

Thanks in advance for your help.

[newbie] Umax Scanner 1200s hangs when attempting to scan

2000-08-04 Thread Pat Koch

Greetings,

I have a Umax Scanner Astra 1200S that is attached to a Adaptec 2906 SCSI
card. The scanner is recognized at boot and works perfectly in Red-hat 6.1
which I also have running on my machine. I am unable to get it to work
with Mandrake 7.1 though. It is recognized by Mandrake at boot also. When I try to
scan, the scanner makes noise and appears to begin to scan then hangs. I have
tried the version of Sane that came with Red-hat, but that causes a seg. fault
when I try to run it, so I reverted back to the version of sane that came with
Mandrake. The SCSI card is SCSI3

I have confirmed that the scanner is properly terminated and it uses ID 5.

My system, in addition to the two above mentioned items consist of:
AMD K-2 400 processor
128Mbs memory
2 hardrives (hda1, hdb2)
1 dvd rom
1 ide cdrw (hewlett Packard
1 parallel port zip drive
cannon printer
Yamaha sound card using the OSS driver
ATI rage fury 32mb.

I hope that I have included all necessary information.

Thank you for your past answers that have helped me transition to Linux
relatively pain free.

Thanks again

[newbie] LAN configuration

2000-08-04 Thread Allen White

Hi all,

I have two computers that are both with Win 98. I have two AMD K6-2 400 and
450 processors. I use Sygate as an internet sharing through a LAN, cable
internet provider. I have a second harddrive on my second machine, where I
installed the Mandrake 7.1 full install, not the windows version.

My problem is that I cannot get the linux to see the internet through the
Netscape Communicator. I am though able to ping the main machine just fine.
I obviously have something not correctly set in the NameServer or something
like that but I can't figure it out. Sygate is supposed to be able to work
with linux as the clientplease help.

Subject:[newbie] Sound Card Problem

First let me say , WOW. This Mandrake Install is the
best Linux install that I have come across. It's a
huge welcome after trying to work with FreeBSD.

The install went well with one exception. My sound
card is not working. I tried using DrakConf and it
responded with "generic" but then when the little
sample sound test is playing I can not hear the sound.

Is there a command that will tell me what type of card
I have ? I really have no idea. The laptop was given
to me awhile back. I remember that the sound worked
under RedHat so I know it has some sort of card..

[newbie] Etherlink card set up

2000-08-04 Thread Mark Bevivino

OK, this is the third time I will have sent this. I
hope that it shows up on the list this time.

I have just installed LM 7.0 and I acquired an 3com
Etherlink III ISA modem after the install. I tried to use Lothar to get Linux to
"see" my card but it did not. This card from what I understand is pretty basic
and the drivers are supposed to be there. I need help getting this thing
recognized and then I want to connect it to a Windows 2000 server. Any help
would be appreciated. Thank you!

[newbie] ejecting zip disk

2000-08-04 Thread Fred Schroeder

Hi!
I have just installed Mandrake 7.1, but haven't been able to figure out
this zip drive thing. I have an internal zip drive, and can mount the
drive with the icon that 7.1 put on the desktop, but I don't know how to
unmount the drive, to eject the disk. If I try umount, it tells me that
the dev is busy. It is kind of a pain to reboot the system to change a
zip disk! Any idea what I am missing here?
TIA

[newbie] Post 7.1 Upgrade problems (3)

2000-08-04 Thread Brad Smith

I have 3 significant problems that developed after an upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1.

(1) In DrakConf, the 2 X related buttons no longer work. One is the X
configuration button, the other is the Change X Resolution button. They click,
a little hard disk activity is heard but nothing is displayed. These worked
well under 7.0.

(2) Related to (1) my X configuration is locked at 800x600 or VGA resolutions
and 16 bit color depth. I have an nvida card with 32 mb ram. When the X
Configuration utility worked I had no problem with resolutions to 1280x1024 and
lots of colors.

(3) I cannot access the CDRom or floppy. If I click on either icon on the
desktop, the window opens, a status line of "working" is displayed and nothing
more. If I try and close the window or logout, the desktop freezes completely
requiring a hard reboot (4 times today).

Linux is the only OS on this PC. Home built, ASUS K7V motherboard, Athlon 700,
128 Mb ram, 15 Gb hard drive, ASUS 50x CDRom, ASUS V6600 nvida video card.

Thanks,

Brad

[newbie] upgrade to 7.1

2000-08-04 Thread jinxinker

A few days ago I went through the agonizing (wait. . .) process of
upgrading from 7.0 to 7.1. I bought the boxed set from Linuxland, the
"official" McMillan set, which in this case consisted of an installantion
CD, a sources CD, and an application CD. I expected the wait, as I had
been following the threads relative to upgrading in this list. I had been
warned about sufficient memory, etc. I have a K6-2 450 and 64 mb of
RAM. Still, the upgrade, when it came to the actual
installation/upgrading of packages, took over 6 hrs, and then when it was
99% completed, it froze at the point when it asked for the application CD,
complaining about the media being corrupt or some such. It was late, and
my wife wanted to use Windoze, so I wanted to just get out of the
installation process, even thinking I might have trashed everything
already. No dice. The program would not let me exit, and none of the
secret handshakes worked. So I hit the reset button. Well, I'm not sure
how complete or incomplete the upgrade may have been, but my Linux still
boots just fine, and it gives me a mixed message, saying I have 7.1 Helium
installed, but also indicating that the old 2.2.14-15 kernel is
operative. However, when I go to the /boot directory, I find that the
vmlimuz link points to 2.2.15-4mdk. Since /etc/lilo.conf points to the
vmlinuz link, I have to assume that maybe the newer kernel is actually
booting. Not sure. But I do know that something filled up my / directory
completely in the process, so I had to do some shifting of sources from my
/home/src directory to /usr/src. I have /usr on its own partitiion. So,
I guess this is just some ramblings about what may or may not have
occurred when I "upgraded." I think most stuff actually did upgrade
before the process froze. I really didn't want to go through all the
configuration stuff anyway, as that is already taken care of, so it was a
good place to stop. In future, I believe any upgrading will be
incremental. If I want a new kernel, I will upgrade the kernel, etc. I
suspect that there was little benefit to the "upgrade," and I wonder what
surprises await. But we Linux guys like surprises to solve, don't we?

[newbie] Shutting down httpd FAILED ... can't reboot !!

2000-08-04 Thread Hadrian Oliver

I sent this out last night, but got no reply. Can anyone help? Is
anyone there? Hello?

Shutting down httpd:FAILED

For the second time now, when shutting down Mandrake 7.0 I saw that
message. When I try to restart, it all seems to go as expected, right
up until you would expect the login/password box to appear; it doesn't.
Instead, the num lock light on my keyboard flashes on and off and the
monitor (screen blank) sounds as though it is switching on and off in
sync.

All I have done is install Mandrake 7.0, PHP3 from the RPM included on
the disk, MySQL 3.22.32 (server and client RPMs downloaded). I did all
this only yesterday (for the second time) and today it all seams to
have died. It only lasted about 2 weeks last time. Even my Windows'98
which runs on the same hard disk lasts longer!!!

Please, if anyone can help I'd be extremely grateful - I need the Linux
operating system with Apache, PHP and MySQL (with JDBC drivers
installed) for a major project with deadline in just 5 weeks!

I run a standalone pc with 475MHz AMD-K6 processor, 64MB RAM, 13GB hard
disk (8GB for Windows, 5GB for Linux). Don't know name of motherboard
(SoundBlaster 64v sound and 8MB ATI graphics on motherboard).

[newbie] Modem Problem with 7.1

2000-08-04 Thread Paul Sherr

After a couple of tries, I've installed 7.1. My system is a K6-2 450
with 192 megs of memory, 8 gigs of disk space allocated to Linux, and

an Actiontec 56K, call waiting, internal PCI modem.

The modem works fine, in fact extremely well under Win 98. However I
can't get the system to locate or use the modem. The modem is
assigned to Com 3, so I expect it to be on /dev/tty/S2. I tried
(from the modem's documentation) using /cat/proc/pci and found that
the system has found the modem. The modem is using IRQ 11, a 16550A
chip, and memory at xDC00-FF and xD800-xD8FF.

I have run setserial /dev/ttyS2 over and over again with no results.

Heartfelt thanks, in advance, for any ideas.

Paul

[newbie] New System Software Problems

2000-08-04 Thread Paul Sherr

I've installed 7.1 on my system, K6-2 450, 192 megs of memory, 8 gig
partition on my D: drive with windows 98. I had some problems with
partitioning (don't ever allocate 102% of a drive), but several
things are wrong.

During the install, I got messages that two packages failed to
install: XV-3.10a-6mdk and vhs-printfilters-1.62-6mdk. What, if
anything, should I do to fix these?

The system will only boot into Gnome. I don't get the same boot
screen as I did before, and I can't find any way to access KDE. I'm
using Gnome with Enlightenment, which is very nice, but I'd like to
fix this.

I can't access The Gimp. Something just flashes on the screen, then
nothing.

I'm also having modem problems, but I'll put that in a separate
posting.

By the way, I'm new to Linux, but do have some Unix experience that
is very rusty from 1981-1982, and much DOS, Windows, and MVS
experience.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

[newbie] CD-Burning

2000-08-04 Thread Ty C.Mixon

Here's a minor issue I've had since I've started using Linux. It's never been
a big deal, so I've usually not worried, but now I have time.

Anyhow, when I burn CD's, be it w/ gcombust, X-CD-Roast, or directly with
cdrecord (like I'll ever do THAT by choice ;) ), I get an error msg that
states something like 'can't get mlockall - permission denied'. But if I su or
burn as root, it's ok.

Where do I need to change things?

Thanks!

[newbie] xfree4.0 on LM 7.1 and XFConfig file

2000-08-04 Thread soulreaver

I used the expert installation and installed xfree4.0, after looking through
'/etc/X11/' i found differnet versions of the xfreeconfig file:
'XF86Config'
'XF86Config-4'
as i installed xfree4.0 all i done was to rename them to:

'mv XF86Config XF86Config-3'
'mv XF86Config-4 XF86Config'
thus in effect using the new config file for xfree4.0, but every time i try
to install the nvidia drivers for my geforce 256 sdr, i get error msgs
compiling the kernel driver using:
'make SYSINCLUDE=/usr/src/linux/include'
but its says that the kernel drivers have installed o.k, so i then go to
remove some mesa items, only to find they are links, so i rename the links
and targets and install the GLX driver (go in fine. no errors), reboot and
get a few flashes and blown back to the console line. does any one know of
the correct way?

so if say you want to kill kmail, type 'kill 1102'
if you don't have permission , just su it, then kill task
hope this has been some help.
now for me, have posted a number of messages to the board and none got through,
ive been using kmail, to send the message to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
is this right?

[newbie] MDK7.1 Refuses to install - Any ideas?

2000-08-04 Thread The_Sandman

Well I have wasted 4hrs trying to get Mandrake 7.1 to install on my P233.
Specs : P233w/mmx, 40Mb EDO RAM, 2Mb S3Trio64, 4.37Gig Fujitsu HD, LITE-ON
20x CDROM, Triton BII M/Board.

The installer either dumps out the stack on Stage 2 or just stops working.
I have tried it in both GUI & text mode.
It seems to be hanging when detecting of HD, but I am not 100% sure on this.

I have looked through earlier posts & it appears only 2 other people have
had this problem, but no solutions were given. The Linux Mandrake is 7.1
given away on Maximum Linux magazine August/September.

Can someone help me please as I have had to put on RH6.1 for now just to
show it is not a hardware issue.

Thanks in advance,

Sand.
