Re: [newbie] Internet configuration for Mandrake 7.0

2000-08-20 Thread Dan LaBine

Nope, I'm not using your provider. But this is the first I hear of a
cablemodem having a MAC address, too, so you could be right. It's either an
extra EEPROM chip in the cablemodem or some such piece of equipment if thats
the case. With mine, you need to contact them if you change your NIC. Then
they scan your system, get the MAC, and your back up. Here, it's actually
the MAC address that ID's you to them, and then they can connect you. It's
probably the same 4 U, but as you say, the address comes from your
cablemodem. Hmmm,..you just never know, do ya?

I had the same kind of problem. In /etc/rc.d/rc.local I added

and that helped.

Red Hat issued one Saturday. Expect a Mandrake version Netscape within the week
I'd guess, although I'm not really sure what the difference is between the two.

Synopsis: New Netscape packages fix Java security hole
Advisory ID: RHSA-2000:054-01
Issue date:2000-08-18
Updated on:2000-08-18
Product: Red Hat Linux
Keywords: Brown Orifice netscape java
Cross references: N/A
-

1. Topic:

New Netscape packages are available to fix a serious security
problem with Java. It is recommended that all netscape users
update to the new packages. Users of Red Hat Linux 6.0 and 6.1
should use the packages for Red Hat Linux 6.2.

Packages will be made available for Red Hat Linux 5.2 when
fixed binaries are available from Netscape.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Linux 6.2 - i386, alpha

3. Problem description:

Due to a problem in the Java environment shipped with Netscape,
it would be possible for a java applet on a remote site to
view files on a local machine, and then provide access to those
files for other machines.

For more information, please see:

http://www.brumleve.com/BrownOrifice/

4. Solution:

For each RPM for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filename]

where filename is the name of the RPM.

Mandrake does not install well on livestock or domestic pets. Please do not
write for support on these installs to this mailing list! But the 'boot'
command seems to have a decent affect if used correctly.

(Just kidding! It's Monday morning and I'm not at work yet!)

KFC?? I hope that it isn't a bucket of Fried Chicken you're trying to
install Mandrake 7.1 into!! I don't think that we have software for that
yet. But it might taste better!!

Have a good day! (sorry for the odd humor, I saw KFC and went into left

Re: [newbie] Kppp and Networking

2000-08-20 Thread Greg Stewart

OK, I think I've learned something tonite...

Mandrake seems to like adding the line:
ALL:ALL EXCEPT localhost:DENY
to the /etc/hosts.deny file. Since this is the case, you'll need to remove
it and add your internal client (Box2) to the /etc/hosts/allow file on Box1
with:
ALL:ALL 192.168.100.2:ACCEPT
this should clear a few things up and we can continue.

> Do I have to use a Firewall anyway?

Yes, actually, firewalling in linux can do two things: protect your machine
from hackers, and masquerade internal IP addresses so that more than one box
can access the internet. (and other things, but that's enough for now).

Download the pmfirewall tarball from www.pointman.org and we can get that
install to establish firewall rules, and masquerading in a very easy
installation script.

For the file and printer sharing, if Box2 is a windows box, you'll need to
install Samba, if not we're much closer.

The firewall: once you've downloaded the tarball for pmfirewall, gunzip and
untar it (gunzip filename, then tar -xvf filename). cd to the pmfirewall
directory, and type ./install (that's: dot-slash, then install--I still
can't see them dots!)

The first thing you'll be asked for is a directory, choose the default.

Then for your external interface, type: ppp0

say no to almost everything, unless you plan to run ftp, ssh, httpd, etc.
And if you use chat rooms, say yes to IDENT.

You'll be asked if you'd like to open ports for special IP ranges, just
press enter, Mostly, the defaults are what you'd like to select.

You'll then be asked if you want pmfirewall to autmatically detect your
external IP, say yes.

then You'll be given the option to masquerade, say yes.

The internal interface is eth0.

Automatic detection of IPs is good. Say yes.

pmfirewall should be set up at this point (if I've missed anything, simply
select the default setting).

Just to make sure, cd into /usr/local/pmfirewall and type: ./pmfirewall
restart

You should see you IP address listed correctly.

At this point, you should be able to ping straight through your new
firewall, from Box2 out to the internet.

Now, I'd suggest you go to www.psionic.com, and get yourself portsentry.
When you've done that we can install portsentry and really tighten up your
firewall box.

Re: [newbie] Internet configuration for Mandrake 7.0

2000-08-20 Thread Dan LaBine

Mifune; Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) set up
your cable modem with one specific network card. The first thing to remember is
that you MUST use that network card ! Each network card ( No matter who built it
), has a distinct MAC ( Machine Access Code ).  That code is only used on
your card. It is not transferrable to another card and it is how your ISP
identifies your computer when you're connecting. I just learned this the hard
way 2 days ago. There is almost nothing to configure in Mandrake. Go to
Drakconf, Network Configuration, find your NIC (Network Interface Card). You
don't need to put anything in for Host Name + Domain, or Alias. Make sure that
the "Enabled" button is turned on (Pushed in), and make sure that you've
selected DHCP as well. That should do it. You can also enter your DNS
numbers which you will find on your ISP's web-site. If you have all of that
configured, everything should be fine. Make sure that you have not enabled ADSL,
PPPOE, or ISDN anywhere is Drakconf. At the worst, you may want to reboot, just
to make sure everything is O.K.

That's all.

   Hi,
I have installed Linux Mandrake 7.0 on my

I would like to configure my internetconnection

The only information to do so that I found
  concerns Mandrake 6.0
This tells me to go to control panel, select
  network configuration (of course),
  and then select interfaces.
But the network configuration panel of Mandrake
7.0 gives me no such option.
I get the options: Basic host information, Name
server specifications, Routings and gateways, Host name search path, NIS, IPX
  interface and PPP/SLP/PIP.
  Can somebody help me?

thanks Kathleen...I think there's a menu file for grub that you can
edit. I read something about that today from the list.

...ok...I was looking for the grub menu.lst and I found it in
/usr/doc/grub-doc-0.5.94/menu.lst...rats! other than that there doesn't
seem to anything else in the system about grub, or how to install it.
That's certainly is a change cause I've grown rather used to being able
to find the docs necessary for just about everything with Linux right on
my system. This is a first.

The key word in this discussion is "Free". Regular ISP's work just fine, but
free one's usually require you to run a .exe that displays ads while your
connected. And since they don't make a Linux version of those ad programs, you
can't connect to the free ISP.

Re: [newbie] Remote login (telnet and X)

2000-08-20 Thread Welker Donald P NPRI

I am further than I was: inetd was not starting. What script is inetd
normally started from?

I should add that this system was installed with the "secure" option, so it
probably isn't doing lots of things that a default installation would do
automatically. For example, I also need to get it to start lpd
automatically. I have pretty good reasons for security as you can probably
divine from my email address, so I don't want to just start with a default
configuration.

Nonetheless, I am still stuck. The computer no longer refuses all
connections, but closes telnet/ftp after a few seconds without prompting for
login.

[newbie] (newbie) Help: Mandrake 7.1 and Weird X

2000-08-20 Thread Prashant Krishnamurthy

Hi all,

I installed Mandrake 7.1. When I typed startx, I would get a blue screen
with the mouse and then the X windows would close with the message "Waiting
for X to shut down". Someone told me it is a problem with KDE and I should
instead use xinit to start. So, I tried that with icewm-gnome, twm, and
other window managers. it works! I get the X-windows, including a clock
at the bottom right corner, and all the menus in each of the window managers.
Netscape starts, so do xpdf, xv and rxvt. But NONE of the other applications
start. Nothing happens or else I get a skeleton box that dies. Sometimes
there is a core dump, sometimes there isn't. What could be the problem?
Help!

Once this gets solved, I need to fingure out how to connect my modem.
But that will be another story I guess :-).

Thanks in advance.

I tried to set up transparent proxy, but
didn't make it.
I think that the problem is, that I don't have my

check that out??
Well recompiled my kernel (using
kernel-2.3.9), but I was unable to
boot it so I restored the old one back. I
noticed that that the is
no source of the kernel I am using
(kernel-2.2.13-7mdk) on CD of mandrake linux so I used
that one. Where can I get src file of that or some
newer kernel??

I can't imagine what's wrong Aaron. Anything like Linuxconf or
'timetool', is just gonna use 'hwclock' to set the system/bios
time. Anyhow, try again
connect, then run the rdate command to a time server. Now, if
the system time is correct, run hwclock --systohc (as root) which
should set your hardware clock in bios to the time you just
corrected in software (system). If this doesn't work, you've got
somethin amiss in hardware/bios.

Last resort: reboot the system and enter bios, set the correct
time there. If this still doesn't work, the next thing would be to
replace the battery on the motherboard. If this doesn't work, and
you can't live with the wrong time... replace the motherboard.

Always buy the best motherboard you can find, break the piggy
bank. Nothing in your system will work better than the motherboard
will let it or help it to.

Re: [newbie] Kppp and Networking

Configuration  is Internet <==> [Modem--Box1--NIC] <==> HUB <==>
[NIC--Box2]>
Box2 also has a modem. Box2 can access the internet but networking is not
setup. If I do setup Networking thru Drakconf , the same situation will
occur. Under "Basic Host Information-- adaptor 1" I use manual instead of
Dchp. Is that allright? I tried to install the rpm's for Dchp but "eth0"
fails during boot when I enable Dchp. Do I need Dchp?

I changed the "static gateway" as you suggested to 192.168.100.1--I got
the same Message "peer is not authorized to use remote address
192.168.100.1"
Here is /etc/reslove.conf below
nameserver 192.168.100.1
nameserver 208.223.196.128

Whenever I use the "default" gateway instead of a"static" gaetway ,I get
the same message except the DNS number is 208.223.199.240-I have never
intered this number, my ISP doesn't know (or admit) where it comes from. My
ISP assigns me a differnet DNS number everytime I logon. My ISP is of very
little help with Linux.

Greg , what I'm wanting to do is be able to share files (and printer) and
also to be able to access internet from either computer. I"m not wanting my
LAN to be accessed through the internet. Do I have to use a Firewall anyway?

Sorry for my ignorance, the help is much appreciated!!
Thanks

Re: [newbie] Free ISPs Compatible With Linux

2000-08-20 Thread Goldenpi

I dont know what all this fuss is about, unless us isps work differently
than uk. All I had to do was enter the phone number, username, password, dns
and a few other things to get both my isps going on linux. apart from aol,
compuserve and msn, most isps should work with linux. The isp doesn't know
what os is connecting to it. What is this about?

You can hit 'c' to bring up a command line when GRUB pops up. :)

Now I just need to figure out how to add BeOS...

Re: [newbie] Remote login (telnet and X)

2000-08-20 Thread Pete Clapham

Hi all --

I assume this is a response to Donald Welker's original and then follow-up query about
FTP and Telnet. I agree with Greg that
the config is quirky, but I disagree that it is a matter of login name/password on the
local machine. I was actually able to fix
FTP (but not Telnet) on my server by adjusting the allow/deny parts of the config.
Now I can and do FTP from windows and
Linux machines to the server even though one of the linux and none of the windows
machines has ever heard of root or the
name I usually go by when using the Linux Server.

For FTP, find the allow/deny portion of the config (I think that changing this is what
security actually does -- or at least one of
the things it does), and allow the machines you WANT to FTP from and make sure those
machines aren't denied. It should
work.

Now, can somebody tell me what to do to get Telnet to work? Uncommenting the daemons
in inetd.conf will get telnetd turned
on, so that a telnet command will connect to the server, but the server will then
refuse the connection.

RE: [newbie] Remote login (telnet and X)

2000-08-20 Thread Pete Clapham

Hi --

You're having the same trouble I had/have. There's a part of your inetd.conf (I
think) file where it allows you to allow or deny
access to various IP numbers. Take a look at these. Uncommenting the lines in
inetd.conf just starts the daemons. However,
you probably have the default status of denying access to all workstations. Remove
this denial. This should allow FTP. At
least it did for me. Alas it probably won't allow telnet (at least it didn't for me).
Can anybody out there tell us BOTH how to
enable telnet to work?

I don't use it myself, but one of the SysEng guys I work with just set up
Apache, MySQL, and PHP, along with writing a web-dased DB for scheduling
meeting rooms and he did it in less than a shift.

I do know that Apache will give you warnings about the default php needing
to be upgraded or something, but my co-worker left the default, and all went
well.

Do you have a version of Apache that includes some form of php? If not, I
believe all you need do is install php aside apache.

Re: [newbie] Remote login (telnet and X)

2000-08-20 Thread Greg Stewart

Are you attempting to telnet in from a machine where you are logged in using
an account with the same username/password, or a different one?

I had/have lots of problems with remote logins using ssh on my MDK box, and
I've taken security down to "low" through that DrakConf crap which I had to
find and install manually. (sorry, I just don't like it)

Apparently the rule set Mandrake creates somewhere, somehow, gets VERY fussy
and limits who and how they can log in.

I *have* set of ftpd (wu-ftpd, and anonftp) on the mMDK box, and cannot ftp
in...Out, yes, but in, still no.

It's a very quirky config. If you can, try creating an account with the same
name/password on the remote machine and try getting in again.

For some reason, I am unable to use DrakBoot. When I click on it in X, nothing

But!! I added FreeBSD to GRUB by editing /boot/grub/menu.lst in vim! And it
works, yay! So thanks to you guys for the help...and now I have another

How do I add BeOS? This is the OS I am currently booting from floppy. It's on

partition type. Can anyone help?

Re: [newbie] Lost passwords

2000-08-20 Thread Mark Hillary

Just to let every one know the way to change the root password if you forget it (or
for some other reason) is to at the the LILO (I use LILO becuase it is better, I
think) prompt type

linux 1

then run 'passwd' and change any of the passwords on the system.

You realy don't want people doning this so in the file /etc/lilo.conf add the
following lines

restricted
password=somepassword

then because this file is world readable ,which means any unprivliged user can
change it, at the command line type

chown root.root /etc/conf
chmod 600 /etc/lilo.conf

Beware, once you use these precautions, if you forget you root password or you root
password, you will have no option but to reinstall.

Also I think it is a good idea to turn the bios password on and set the boot
sequence to C, CDROM, A so that a floppy can not be used to boot your system.

The Usb support in the 2.2 kernels is a bit here and there. It is only beta.
Where as the Usb support for the 2.4 kernels in a lot better even though those
kernels are considerd to be beta them selves. i think that it would be best to go
and download the latest 2.4 test kernel, which I think is 2.4.0-test6. How that
works. (it is about 20mb).

Re: [newbie] Red hat installation problem

2000-08-20 Thread Greg Stewart

Hey! wait till RedHat 7.0 is out in full release. The beta has a better
implementation of gnome, also provides the option for XFree86 3.3.6 or
4.0.1, and has a huge amount of kernel tweaks to 2.2.16 that provide
features found in the upcoming 2.4 kernel.

The "sharper and prettier" problem was possibly due to the differences in
XF86, and the versions gnome...remember RH6.2 was in development a while
before MDK7.1 and just didn't include the same things.

If all distributions included the same exact versions of every app and
service provided, you'd problably see only minor differences between them.

In /etc/inetd.conf you have to remove the # marks with the telnetd line to
make the telnet daemon active.

Re: [newbie] deb vs rpm

2000-08-20 Thread Greg Stewart

rpm can install and updrage packages from an ftp stie just like deb.

Try: rpm -Uvh ftp.redhat.com/pub/updates/6.2/RPMS/etc/packagename*.rpm

as long as you have the directory tree correct it should take all the
"packagename" rpms and update accordingly.

Since I'm not "registered" with redhat, I don't have access to their
auto-update.

And, actually, RedHat has an unpdate utility.. you *do* have to register for
it, to have the priveledge, otherwise you need to use the ftp site/mirrors
and do things manually.

I don't believe you can use deb effectively on any other system than Debian.

I added BeOS to Grub using DrakBoot in DrakConfig. It was easy to do and
it works.
You can change the order listed, add, remove and change the default OS.

The way Linux is setup (unless changed by hand) passwords are shadowed and
encrypted with SH-5, so there absolutely is no way to find out what the password
is. Best is to over write as previously mentioned.

Really, anybody with access to your box can change the superuser (root)
passwd. It is not difficult!

When you say resolve, do you mean that you are trying to resolve a domain name to an ip address?  If this is the case, you would have to be running a local primary DNS server or modify the LMHOSTS file on the NT box.

Can you ping the Linux box from the NT box using just the IP?  If so, can you access Apache using http://IP (like http://192.168.0.3) from Netscape/NT?  If not, can you access Apache using Lynx or Netscape from the Linux box (http://127.0.0.1)?

this should initiate a FileSystem check and fix the problems. However
you may have to tell it where to look so it may want you to reference
which partition it's supposed to do the fsck on. i.e. e2fsck /dev/hda1
and so on.

hope this helps,

You also have to put in thMhï+fault gateway.

I'm a former redhat user, and the day I ordered RedHat 6.2 I also
ordered Mandrake 7.0 which I then promptly changed to 7.1. I noticed a
HUGE difference in performance of some things, and others weren't so
different. The biggest difference I noticed was the display in Mandrake
is SO much sharper and prettier than RedHat ever was. That, and some
other things sold me on Mandrake forever. And I thought I was going to
be a RedHat user forever! :)

just my two cents...

Well, all I can say is that thank god I am on the 'newbie' list. I went

this cause I could ping, I could telnet and I could get to the internet
via wingate, thus...

I am flying along here. I love this new Mandrake. I used RH5.0 two years
ago and it took me forever to get it running.

[newbie] Installing GNOME

2000-08-20 Thread Jim Reimer

ok - now I can change desktops, but I'm not sure where to start with
the GNOME installation. I have 26 RPM's containing either parts of
GNOME, or utilities related to or working with GNOME. Which one goes
in first? Or does it matter? I figure at least a few will have
dependency failures if they don't go in in the right order.

As far as I know, you need to edit (as Root) /boot/grub/menu.lst
Check "info grub" and look at the Installation section, this should get
you going.

You should be able to edit your ~/.xinitrc file, and define your
preference in there.

exec kde # runs KDE
exec gnome-session # runs Gnome

"Nothing" should run plain vanilla X.

Also look in ~/.Xclients, there should be several more window managers
defined.

2000-08-20 Thread Andrew Collington

Hi there,

I have Mandrake 7.1 and I was trying to recompile the kernel so that I could
use my 3com ethernet card. Whilst I was in the config panel (using make
xconfig) I also set on the USB drivers because I have a USB scanner, printer
and desktop camera.

However, when trying to compile with the USB support set to Y, I got
these errors and compiling stopped:

// snip

So I tried turning the USB support to M(odule) and although the

compiling. These errors are as shown:

Now I cannot recompile my kernel. Can anyone tell me what is happening

Anyway, any help is appreciated!

I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to that one myself. I tried

Re: [newbie] Partitioning questions

2000-08-20 Thread Goldenpi

I had to use it. Windows 95 insists on booting from hda, which is the only
drive big enough to put linux on. Linux needs the whole drive. I fixed it by
putting windows on another hard drive, the other hda. Selecting between them
is done with a switch in the power cable and a few relays. windows hda is
only 500mi, so I also have hdc which is slightly damaged 2gi. The slight
damage makes it useless for anything except as a fat32 frive, and it cant
boot.

The system has an added advantage, it prevents windows from overwriteing
lilo.

[newbie] GRUB bootloader question

2000-08-20 Thread Kathleen Dickason

Okay, I have kind of a silly question. How do I add another OS to GRUB?

I started with a dual-boot Windows98/Mandrake 7.1 setup, and GRUB worked just dandy.

Still does, but I have since added a 2nd hard drive and two more OSes, one of which I
boot from floppy, and the other

of which I access by typing things in GRUB's command line.

Is there a way to add these two permanently to the choices that pop up when GRUB loads?

Thanks!

I presently use Yahoo's Blue Light but the only version of their software that
is available is for Windoze.

Any help would be appreciated.
