[newbie] ip address
hello, i have a couple of questions if anybody could help me out. Assuming that a linux machine is hooked up to a network and it obtains an ip address from a dhcp server where does linux store that ip address that it obtained? My second question is assuming i want to have linux obtain a specific ip address from a dhcp server without setting it up as a static ip how would i go about doing that?. thanks KAS __ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup

'Cause the system is encountering an IP conflict now. 192.168.x.x is a reserved address (you may know this already) for internal LAN usage along with 10.x.x.x and , i believe, 172.something..x.x .You definitely need to check to make sure there is no IP assignment for ppp0, only DHCP. Also, check /etc/hosts to make sure you only 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain as the entry...no other IPs until we can figure out why there's this new conflict. Um... yes, if you configure ppp0 to start at boot, it wiil attempt to dial up unless you have demand dial enabled...let's not get into that yet, though. Disable the boot-time on ppp0 for now. You should be able to leave pmfirewall the way you have it. After boot, type /sbin/ifup ppp0and see what happens. I negotiation occurs, wait a few seconds and then type /sbinf/ifconfig and see if ppp0 is listed. if it is, check the IP info. If you get assigned a 192.168.x.x number then we have to use a different range on the NIC (10.x.x.x maybe). Geez...it's 1am--I have to get to sleep now... I'll think some more on this tomorrow. --Greg > Hi, its me again. > > I tried different port and also different slots. It didn't help. By the way > where do you find system info on your serial ports? Same here, I sure as heck hope that the full version does not act like that too, I think the programmers when they told me it was the sound drivers were just making dumb excuses to sit around picking their noses and not do anything about it, or goodness knows maybe they were hopefully getting something done, I sure hope so. [newbie] Telnetd close connection
Hi, I have recently installed Mandrake 7.1 within a LAN. I could telnet or X-Win into this new server (from another Windows98 PC) but so how my telnet connection will be closed by the server (perhaps telnetd) at some irregular period (from 3- 30 mins after connection is established). Does anybody know what .conf I should change to fix this problem ? Thank you for your help, regards Calvin _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: [[newbie] 7.1 Install freezes at IDE config]
Mike: I could be way off base with this, but I just had a thought: You don't say what you did to prepare your HD. Have you got enough space on your HD? 2 gb isn't a whole lot of disk space. (I can't believe I just said that.) My Win98SE installation uses 900 mb and, except for one monster application, it doesn't have a whole lot on it. Open Explorer, pick C:, Properties and see how much free space you have. A Mandrake workstation installation needs 500 mb as the minimum, but 1 gb is preferred. A server installation would just about take up your whole drive. If space is the problem, don't give up. Run Scandisk and Defrag. If the first pass doesn't do it, you may be able to recover some space with some housekeeping. /temp directories are a good place to hunt. Again, I apologize if I'm way off base on this, but I had to ask. -- Carroll Grigsby > > "Cunningham Michael" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > I'm trying to install Mandrake 7.1, but it consistently freezes at the > > "configuring IDE" installation stage (I have to hit the 'reset' button). > > I've tried booting from the CDROM and launching from w/in Win98, lin4win and > > > full install, graphical and text install, PnP BIOS off and on, always with > > the same result. Whenever I exit the game, end turn, etc, etc, the game music stops and the game is locked at that point, totally unresponsive. Hmm. I didn't kill it via terminal though. I had the same problem with my Matshita CD ROM originally. After tearing my hair out for a few days I set everything in my bios to default on my Abit motherboard. Installed without a hitch. Could be sth to do with PnP but it's hard to say because I had turned that off and it still didn't work. Brian Chua Leap Kee wrote: > Hi, i'm also having the same problem. Re: [newbie] Kppp and Networking
Hi, its me again. I tried different port and also different slots. It didn't help. By the way where do you find system info on your serial ports? I can find about my PCI devices. I then went to net conf and then ppp/slip/plip/ and enabled ppp0 to start at bootup. Also enabled pmfirewall to start at boot. When booting it gets to ppp0 and starts dialing ---its says it failed and will retry. I noticed that my modem is connected after trying to start KPPP. I then ran./pmfirewall restartand got the following results Internal eth0: 192.168.100.1/255.255.255.0 External ppp0: 192.168.100.1/255.255.255.255 I can ping this mysterious 208.223.199.240 and my box successfully., but nothing else.I haven't set up box 2 yet. I have to go to netconf to disconnect modem. I played with "ip-up.local" some but will try some more. Well, any ideas? is ppp0 suppose to start at boot without dialing out? Thanks for all you help ,Greg. [newbie] KPPP still giving me aggro!
Please someone , help if you can. Installed and configured Madrake 7. Set up kppp , but sometimes will - sometimes wont. Creation of duplicate files (host.conf & resolv.conf) created continuously. Any ideas? I thought I had it all figured , but I've missed something and I can't find what it is. Many thanx - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[newbie] SO52 -- normal font corrupted
Dear friends: Here is the problem: Often in SO52 when typing a line (e.g. of poetry), the last word suddenly switches from normal font size to subscript size. When I retype the word, it usually returns to normal size. But what could be causing this and how can I prevent it from happening. It happens quite frequently. I noticed this in SO51 and was hoping the problem or bug had been fixed but, no, it's still there in SO52. Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix this? Thanks so much in advance. [newbie] SO52 -- HTML Single Space?
Dear friends: Hopefully, an easy question: When I create a SO 52 document (foo.sdw) in SINGLE SPACE format and then save it as SO HTML (foo.html), the document produced is in DOUBLE SPACE. In SO's Options I made sure that Single Space is the default. It is. And the foo.sdw document is in single space. But the foo.html document remains in double space. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as to how correct this. Thank you. Do an install with: --prefix=/usr/local Or look at the makefile and change the install-dir. Eric MC Jason Ashman wrote: > > -- > Hey Linux users.
