[newbie] error on samba-2

2000-08-30 Thread Juggernaut

Hi again..
I'm trying to connect windoze 98 SE with Linux. And then I get some error
messages on Windoze.Anyone can help me ? Please.

Computer 1 : IP Address : 192.168.0.1, Mandrake 7.0, host name : Craven.net
Computer 2 : IP Address : 192.168.0.2, Windoze 98 SE, host name : teteh.net

Here's the errors :
1. I'm trying to copy files from linux to win, and I get error message like
this :
"cannot copy kfm_0_776Craven. Access denied. Make sure the disk is not
full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. "
The file is in /tmp.

2. "Cannot access \\Craven\Linuxer
The network name is either not found on the running network, or is
incorrect. Do you want to connect by using Dial-Up-Networking ?" And I
answer "No". And the the second message appear.
" \\Craven\Linuxer is not accessible. The share name was not found. Be
sure you typed it correctly."

3. "You must supply a password to make the connection. Resource :
\\Craven\pungki
Password : "
And then the box " Save the password in your personal list" is checked.
I tried to fill the password with user password, root password, and the
user password in windoze. But I still cannot access it.

Thank you very much for helping me.

Mark,

The HCF series is a host based modem or more commonly refered to as a
winmodem and will not work with Linux.. If you go to http://www.linux.com,
you
will find, under the Hardware section, a list of modems that are known to
work
with Linux.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.1 modem installation

2000-08-30 Thread Larry Hignight

I believe the reason you modem isn't working is that it is a winmodem.
During the past couple of years modem manufacturers began producing modems
that lacked dedicated processors and instead relied on the computers cpu to
do all of the processing. Unfortunatly, these bastardized modems are very
hard to provide support for in Linux. I've been stung a couple of times
(even with windows support) because quite often these modems come from small
manufacturers that are just hoping and praying to ge their company off of the
ground.

Chua,
What version of Mandrake are you running? Version 7.0 has Xfree
3.3.6
which has full Banshee support. I'm not sure about the lower versions.
If you have a lower version you may want to upgrade and save yourself
some headaches.

Re: [newbie] Netscape lockup problems in Mandrake 7.1

2000-08-30 Thread Anthony

Yeah, I've been using Mozilla as my main browser ever since M14. And it's been
getting better with every milestone. I'm not sure if you've downloaded the
latest nightly build lately, but they've changed the way Mozilla looks again.
It's much more blue, and IMHO looks better than it used to.
http://binaryfusion.net/screenshots/latest_mozilla.png (90K) for those of yall
who don't have the time to download the 7 MB file.

Galeon is also really nice for just simple web browsing. It requires Mozilla to
be installed on your system, but it only uses it to do the web page rending.
The actual browser is MUCH faster and doesn't take up near as many resources as
Mozilla does. http://galeon.sourceforge.net/ if you want to check it out.

The only times I use Netscape 4.7x now is to go to sites that require SSL
logins or Flash, as Mozilla and Galeon don't support that. But I'm so happy
that I never touch Netscape 4.7x anymore; I never did like that browser.

[newbie] Help setting up DSL

2000-08-30 Thread Jeffrey P. Jolma
I am having troubles getting using my DSL account from my linux box.

I have had DSL for a while functioning properly on a windows box. I bought a new machine and am dual booting it with win98 and mandrake 7.1. The different computers access the same DSL line via a hub. Win98 on my new machine works fine with the DSL. To configure it on the linux partition, I used the same settings as found in the windows network applet in the control panel:
- same IP (it is a static one)
- same netmask
- same gateway
- same DNS host
- same DNS ip addresses
- DHCP is disabled

I didn't mess with anything else.

Also, it seemed to find my 3Com card fine (3c905 10/100). When I type "ifconfig etho" it displays the proper stats of my card. "less /etc/conf.modules" display (what I think) is the proper driver: 3c59x. I didn't mess with any other settings.

I cannot successfully ping any site or log onto any web site. I don't getting any errors when restarting inetd or httpd.

Any suggestions?

Thanks much.

how to enable sounds in gnome if that is the desktop you are using.
Check in KDE control center to see if system sounds is enabled. And
click on the small speaker icon on the task bar to see where the volume
is set.  If you have already done these things, I would go to Konsole
and  "su" and type in " soundconfig" and try configuring that way.

Hi,
I am running Mandrake 7.0 and originally had a SiS 6326 PCI card in
when I installed Mandrake. About a month ago I exchanged the card with
a Creative Labs VooDoo Banshee. Before I changed cards I downloaded the
latest Linux drivers from Creative, untarred them in a temporary
directory and then changed then run level from "5" (graphical) to "2"
(console) in /etc/initab. I changed the cards, rebooted and Mandrake
automatically found the card, deleted all the info about the SiS
reconfigured X for the Banshee (albeit using the SVGA server). I then
ran the executable supplied from Creative which installed the correct
server and updated /etc/X11/Xf86Config. I typed in startx and there I
was 32 bit color, 1280X1024. Now if I can only get glide to work I'd be
set, but that's another topic completely.
I know your card is from a different manufacturer but it may be
worth a
shot. Good luck

[newbie] DHCPCD not working with Kernel 2.16 cable modem

Anyone else have this prob?

Works fine with 2.15 -4 MDK kernel, but with the 2.16 kernel, my internet

kill old dhcpcd and reload it. (I don't think I have to reload my NIC module)

Yeah, there's a lot of us. Some of us might be able to help you.
However, to put it mildly, your plea is somewhat vague. We need to know:
1. What media are you trying to use? A Mandrake CD-ROM? A downloaded
version? Something else?
2. What kind of system do you have? CPU, motherboard or computer brand
name and model, RAM, HD(s) including size and available space, video
card, etc...
3. What have you done to prepare for Mandrake?
4. What have you tried so far?

 from /usr/include/gdk/gdk.h:31
 from /usr/include/gtk/gtk.h:31
 from ps.c:53:
/usr/include/glib.h:56 globconf.h: No such file or directory
ps.c:54 libgimp/gimp.h: No such file or directory

however there is a file named ps that has been created, is the above
indication of some sort of error in the compilation or just info?

If you're running any "Free" software that you think might have spyware
built-in, try "http://grc.com/default.htm" . Grab the free downloadable file
called "Optout.exe", and run it. It will clean out any spyware you may have.
The guy who runs the web-site is the same guy who found the spyware built-in to
Netscape's Smart Download program. His web-site is a major education!
Unfortunately, it's only for Windows.

To compile a .c file you must use gcc.

Type gcc -o ps ps.c

The middle ps will then be the name of the executable. This can be changed to
anthing you like.

Actually, I think you can install individual parts as in Navigator and
the common files to just have the browser.  See  the  rufus
site  like as in rpmfind. I think it is  http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/
.   You will find several different versions there, in various
languages. Be sure to get both  "Navigator " and  "Common".

I think you can either install all or nothing.
You can move to Kmail, Pronto, Mahogany or something like that for
e-mail.
Plenty of choices...

If you've ever configured your soundcard, the sample that is used to test
whether it works or not is Linus Torvlads pronouncing Linux. It should be in

The same thing is repeated in ssl_engine.log. I changed the ownership of
the log directory so that user & group 'nobody' owned it, but that didn't

[newbie] Mellenium dome

I have just came back from the millenium dome, and I found that most of
there computers use windows NT, except for the internet access which use
win95. But I found that some of there computers use linux. Linux has been
excepted by a famous attraction.

Anyone been to the talk zone? The internet access computers were suposed to
allow me to type email, but there keyboards dont have a backspace key. I was
suposed to be able to access internet sites but there was no way to enter
the url. The touch screens are all out of allignment too. And I crashed two
of them by overloading the keyboard buffer. Heres a sample of an email I
typed at normal speed:

Re: [newbie] Question about some of Mandrake's install prompts

2000-08-30 Thread Charles A Edwards

Mark
Most of the Mandrake installation is to your / partition so having 1GB of
free space dosen,t mean that you have that much space available for the
installation.
You are asked how much you want to install because you get a lot of extra
programs with any Linux distro. these programs are installed based on their
priority/use and upon avaiable space (mbs). A functional Mandrake can be
installed in as little as 600mb so really 1GB is not that much extra space.
In 7.1 a normal installation is 1.3GB.

I was just at this site last night and thought it was pretty cool so I
signed up. At this point, I have to go in and reconfigure my router to
accept voice packets, but if you look in the faq's, they also talk about
linux solutions; granted those are for people using a linux box as a
firewall, but nonetheless... I would say that the biggest obstacle is being
able to use the java applet under linux - if your linux browser supports it,
then you should be able to use it (I haven't tried yet). I'm planning to
use it from my windows partitions now, and as soon as I get it going there,
I'll play with the linux side.

Re: [newbie] AGH!! Linux not ready for prime time (OS/2 user)

2000-08-30 Thread Jeff Malka

I whole heartedly agree with you Paul. You expressed it much better than I
did. I am willing to put in the time to learn but have the concern that
many will not - again leaving me with a marginal or orphan OS for which
drivers no longer exist and hardware incompatibilities abound (as happened
to me with OS/2). I think everyone expects to have to learn new things when
using a new OS, it is the need to learn programming syntax just to be able
to configure it that is daunting.

But I will master that too. I have been using computers since the Apple II
days, have used numerous OS's from DOS, Win 3.1 (same thing), OS/2 in
several versions, W95/98 and NT as well as having played with some simple
programming. However my programming experience is rudimentary and that has
been a stumbling block for me with Linux - though one I will overcome in
time.

In an ideal world there would be a simpler configuration interface for those
who wish it while leaving the code visible and _available_ (without taking
anything away from) those who would prefer the command line and UNIX syntax.
One does not obviate the other. It is my understanding that Linux is moving
in that direction anyway, which is logical, and Mandrake is a definite step
in that direction especially as to installation.

Depends on your perspective. The typical home user wants something like
Mandrake which has a pretty large bag of tricks. A sysadmin on the other hand
may like using TurboLinux for his/her clustering solution, eServer for a thin
client, and eDesktop for the employees desktops. More to the point of that
thread I think that a lot of the dirstros just don't update fast enough to
stay on top of all the developments in video/sound drivers and X. Therefore,
they aren't really lending themselves as fully to the gaming market as say a
Mandrake which tends to have a new version rather frequently.

I've done several "taste tests" with a number of people and have yet to find
someone who can tell the difference between the 320bit mp3 and the .wav file.
Of course, a guy with an oscilloscope may do better ;-)

Given that I think the quality of the 320bit mp3 is indestinguishable from the
.wav file or cd, the compression is rather nice. A typically 50mb wav file
compresses down to about 10mb at 320 which means I can burn anywhere from four
to six cs's onto a single cdr.

Actually, I don't need WC to be baffled by the use of windows. :P

WC looks to be a very full featured utility and would appear to be much better
then explorer. Perhaps MS should buyout the makers of WC and then incorporate
it into the os instead of as an alternative to explorer. It actually reminds me
of an older dos utility called gold something or rather.

Well, you address having to move from /home to /mnt/dos_hda5 in one of two ways
that I can think of off the top of my head. First, you could create a symbolic
line in your /home pointing to the dos partition. Second, you could just move
the dos partition or files into /home and then access them there when using WC.

> BTW: WC also handles tar.gz archives ;-)

That is actually a really nice feature about time some of the windows
programmers started supporting tar and gzip.

This sounds a lot like a hexeditor which may explain why it isn't present in
kfm. As a sysadmin, I don't think I would want to have a file manager that gave
users the ability to peer inside of sensitive files and the opportunity to crack
passwords. This would be doubly dangerous in windows where none of the files
are off limits.

Well, you had to select the file/directory that you wanted to move somehow ...
which means that you either had to tab over to it, or use the arrows, or use the
mouse to select it and then do the key sequence. We'll race sometime :)

I think you can either install all or nothing.
You can move to Kmail, Pronto, Mahogany or something like that for e-mail.
Plenty of choices...

Steve,

When you installed MySQL, do you use PHP? I tried and it did not
recognize the MySQL specific commands. Did you hve to re-install PHP or
do use another program to access Sql database?

Re: [newbie] MySQL RPMS

2000-08-30 Thread Michael Hatzakis

Paul,

One thing I tried is install it using the RPM manager and PHP did not
recognize it. Ie., did not recognize any of the sql commands, ie.,
mysql_connect(). It did work on it's own, though. So, I took it out and
tried manual install and ./config using the instructions. Same.
Then I removed PHP and tried to reinstall it with MySQL support using the
compile instructions, but it did not find support to MySQL even though I
turned on the switch --with-mysql=/dir... (details escape me) but the
./config still crashed looking for the MySQL exececution files.

So, still sql'less in seattle.

Thanks, Michael

I am having troubles with KDE though, or I think I am. When

I thought there was icons and task bars so to speak in the KDE

I am new to this so maybe that is all you get. If I am wrong maybe
somebody could help me out with this. I am running Mandrake 7.0.

I don't do voodoo, but perhaps you should try setting things up very
conservative. 640x480 and 256 colors to start with, and then see how far
you can push things upward.

You could try downloading and installing the Lexmark RPMs

That should be as follows: when you set things up properly, you can
"startx" and that will load the first X server session. You can then
switch to tty2 through tty6 by pressing CtrlAltF2 - CtrlAltF6.

On the second (F2) login screen, ->After Logging In!!<- you can run
another x server, "startx -- :1" (startx -- :2 for the third one etc.)

But don't do that when you don't need that, in KDE you already have 4
virtual desktops and you can expand that to as many as 10 if I am correct
(I don't run KDE anymore , XFCE goes to 12).

>I thought there was icons and task bars so to speak in the KDE

Do you see a graphical screen with a mouse cursor? If so, you are running
X without a window manager installed. Then you better "upgrade" your
install and make sure you have KDE installed (although this is done by
default). If you only see a text screen, make sure you log in and you run
"startx" to start the x-windows system.

Let's hear if this gets you somewhere...

Lynnyou're welcome. What I suspect is that the model you
have is pretty much like the group of printers commonly
referred to as WINprinters. These printers require
proprietary software to work and if the manufacturer only
supplies software for windows and Mac OS then it's probable
that it may never work with Linux.

Jeremy, the same thing happened to me when I
installed Mdk 7.0 originally.  I was able to use the netconf command from
the terminal window, and then added them as needed.  Your first device is

can add it to the text based menu system if needed.  If you still have

didn't 'detect' any of my two NIC's that are installed. I've had no luck
finding any information about how to 'manually' install a NIC, even after
searching hundreds of websites etc. Any info out there usually has to do with
installing drivers AFTER Linux has already detected your NIC initially. i.e
when I go to HardDrake and see a list of my hardware, there is no plus sign
next to Network Interface device etc.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated,

p.s Both my NIC's aren't listed in the

Linux drivers...and colleagues have used them in their machines with Linux

OK, what I did was boot from a W98 boot disk (not the one w98 creates,
just formatted a new one and let it copy system files onto it) and
copied fdisk from windows\command and well fdisk didn't see any
NON-DOS partition on my drive. That's the funny thing - I have used
fdisk for deleting non-dos partitions before, but it just doesn't see
the Ext2 partition.
Now comes into my mind - could it because of the misbehavior of LILO
when installing Linux and it didn't want to install correctly cos of
the 1024 cyl. limitation ?
But still, I have reinstalled W98 since, so it should have rewritten
the partition table (or does it not ?)

please tell me in a way someone like me can understand ;-)

Might be, but who wants to have different distros for servers
(Debian), desktop work (RedHat, MDK, Corel) and gaming (probably MDK
and I don't know more) ?

Erm, if quality is most important, then why do you make MP3s and don't
just let it be raw wav or something ?

Take a look. It's worth it. After you try it, you won't understand how
someone can work with Explorer or My Computer.

Yo man, right, but try WC and see for yourself. After a week you will
not want to work in anything else in Win.

Well every file manager should be able to do that... however WC also
has a "button bar" - you can place icons of your fav. progs in the top
part of the window and launch them from there.

> browsing disks ... hd, fd, cd

Yep, but HOW... To access my regular drive I have to go up (home), up
(/), mnt, dos_hda5 to get to my stuff. I know I could do it somehow
with ln, but in WC you have a dir hotlist, you just press ctrl-d and
choose one of your fav. dirs to go to, and you're there. Of course I
could cd or something, but this is just so easy.

With F5/F6/shift-F4 or F7 ?

Actually, my main point is that KFM looks and behaves like windows
Explorer, but I am used to something similarly pretty, but much more
effective - WC.

By compression I meant that it uses the free zip source from the
Info-ZIP group to create .zip files. You just select the files you
want to compress, press alt-F5, name your archive and press enter.

It also has an internal unarj and uses external archivers for other
file types (ACE, UC2, RAR, etc.)

BTW: WC also ha

[newbie] ahhhhhhh corrupt partition table

2000-08-30 Thread Oliver Stieber

here's what I've done...

nt workstation was installed on the pc (not allowed to remove it because of
work!)
hda1 + hda2 both 4096mb
installed mandrake 7.1 all reiserfs except for /boot with was ext2
every thing ran fine..
then i created another reiserfs partition with diskdrake.
but didn't get around to mounting it.

booted up into nt, and created an extended partition with 1 fat logical
drive to share between Linux and nt and formatted it.

rebooted into Linux, moved /downloads to /olddownloads
started diskdrake, which told me that the partition table was too corrupt.
couldn't mount the reiserfs partition mount said that there was a problem
reading it probably not formatted).

mounted the fat partition as /downloads and moved all the stuff across.

rebooted Linux and tried to go into nt, nt loaded came up and told me it
couldn't find disk(0)partition(1) or something like that,

tried to boot into Linux, kernel came up but couldn't mount root partition.

tried mandrake install disk to try and recover the situation it just comes
up with No root partition found when setting up filesystems.

doing a mount -r -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/nt from the Linux installer disk
says, mount failed: Illegal seek at /usr/bin/perl-install/fs.pm linr 209

any clues on how to recover the file system? good Linux/ dos tools for
sorting things out.

Thanks, Alan!

It looks as if it's time to contact Lexmark.

Jason:

To THAT, I plead guilty. That's why I bought Linux. I just
have to put it on a different computer so I can go online
with the good one.
