[newbie] Modem Trouble
I have a modem, it is a Diamond SupraMax 56k v.90. Linux finds the modem but it tell me the modem will not respond? I was lead to believe that this modem was not a WinModem, is this wrong? Maybe there is something that I am missing, which is why I am talking to you fine people. I am real new to this, I just got it up and running tonight. My eyes are likely going to fall out soon so I think I may head off to bed now. Thanks for helping me with this annoying problem. Stephen

[newbie] Wine: It works! (Mark)
Thanks Mark - it actually worked! So far I've only tried the method of clicking on the .exe from the file manager and specifying to open with Wine, but I'm going to experiment. Couldn't get most of my regular programs to work properly - some games complained about the lack of DirectX 6 being installed, and many others seemed to think that they had just been installed - I guess they couldn't find the path to their configuration files. Probably all to be expected though, at this point. Sure was strange to see them startup in Linux though! Even more strange - one program that nearly always crashes Windows when something goes wrong - it locked up, but this time all I had to do was "Kill" it! Re: [[newbie] Full Harddrive Warning]
Lemme steer this back onto Linux a bit. I have a server that's been running happilly on 6.1 & a 2 gig drive for a while now, and it's getting about 92% full, so I wanna upgrade. What's the easiest way to do that? I'm hoping things like crontabs and userdata and programs like MRTG can move without much fuss. I would like to upgrade the drive. install 7.1 on it, and then move my other data. and then remove the small drive. What's the procedure for a brain transplant?
[newbie] X setup w/new install not working!!
Fresh install of drake 7.1 with a Gladiac Geforce2 32meg, xfree86 4.01 When I got to the X setup towards the very end of the install, I kept getting a message that it wasn't working and to try a different vid crad or monitor. I went through evert possible combination and it wouldn't work. This is a system that was working with a tnt2 ultra working. I tried a fresh install with that card and got the same error, so I thought I'd try again with the geforce2. After spending hours doing reinstalls and trying different card/monitor configs, I decided to skip the X config and try it through cli. Well, with X -configure I get: Fatal server error XFree86 has found a valid card configuration. Unfortunately the appropriate data has not been added to xf86PciInfo.h So I try XF86Setup and get: Warning SERVER specification missing in Card database entry Trident TGUI9660 (generic) (line 2513) Warning SERVER specification missing in Card database entry Trident TGUI9680 (generic) (line 2519) Warning SERVER specification missing in Card database entry Trident Cyber 9320 (generic) (line 2537) Segmentation fault (core dumped) So I try xf86config I get the same thing if I choose to see the vid card list. [newbie] A Script
Something I have been thinking of trying for a while and I finally did it this morning. I thought I would pass it along. I wanted something -- a mailcheck and an alert. A mailcheck that would work with procmail because I have five different mail folders that procmail sorts to. An alert in the form of a wav file that the computer could play. What I mean by mailcheck is not on the order of fetchmail or anything like that. Just something to tell me I have unread mail in my mailboxes -- when I am busy with something else. I know there may be GUI solutions in KDE or Gnome, but I don't use either of those desktops. Besides, I am rather fond of my own home-grown solution. Here is the script -- I named it "m": #!/bin/bash cd ~/mail if test du -b -c Austin-LUG Inbox NDS Newbie Xfce | grep total | grep 5120 then echo No New Mail else /usr/bin/play ~/wavs/close03.wav fi exit 0 The first two lines are obvious. The "if test" is a conditional: it runs "du" with arguments on five different mail folders. (This is Pine I am dealing with so it may not work with another mailbox format.) Then it pipes into a search for the "total" output; then it searches that output for the number 5120. 5120 is the static number of bytes indicating that each folder is one kilobyte, even with all mail already read -- there is the "internal format" thing that goes into this mailbox format. Then, if "5120" is found, the output is "No New Mail." If it is not found, that means the number has increased and there is new mail in a folder or folders. So: else ... It plays a wav file which is the five notes from the movie "Close Encounters". I tested this on a command line this morning and, to my satisfaction, it works. Later I made a crontab entry: $ crontab -l */11 * * * * $HOME/bin/m >> $HOME/Procmail/log Meaning the script is run every 11 minutes. The output (which with cron is normally sent as another e-mail) is redirected to the Procmail log. The double ">>" appends the info to the log without erasing the rest of it. Shell scripts are cool. I hope maybe someone might want to give it a try and experiment for themselves. Phil -- What makes the universe so hard to comprehend is that there's nothing to compare it with.

Jaguar wrote: > > Hmmm another shortcoming of Linux:) > when will it end > My $0.02 worth > Jaguar > It's only a shortcoming if you, the sysadmin of "your" system allows it to be so. One thing Linux is not and that is "cradle-to-grave" software. When you load this stuff up you've got to plan ahead a little a know what you've got. That includes planning for how much space you're going to need on certain partitions and why. That's the way the software is written. Another plus about Linux is that IF you want it to act like windows and remind you when it's time to take out the trash the you have that ability to program the system to do so. You don't have that kind of freedom with Windows. You get what come out of the box courtesy of Redmond, Washington. Whether you want it or not. Thank God they're not the only game in town. Don't get me wrong. Windows has it's uses...although at the moment I can't think of too many that I'd brag about other than being a real good training tool to train sysadmins about disaster recovery and such things. You know...the things you "can't" learn when the Linux system NEVER crashes or has to be rebooted due to an abend in just one process or service. Anyway, back to what I was say. What Windows users see as Linuxs' weaknesses are actually reflections of that windows users own fears and weaknesses. To date I haven't found any weaknesses in Linux. Only strengths. So what the learning curve is high. Once you become proficient enough to effectively use this OS to conduct business or research or whatever your computing needs might be you're what we in system administration like to call a "low maintenence" user. That's someone that actually knows what they're doing and when something REALLY is broken they might even have half an idea about how to fix it instead of say,"well the thing stopped working and it's a peice of crap!" Never mind that the user doesn't have any patience to let the machine finish booting before they overwhelm the thing with 50 requests to do something...but then again I've only seen that happen with Windows at boot time. You can't do that to a Linux machine cause it won't allow you to.:) Just my $1.75 -- Mark

Curious, I have 7.1 and all systems work for me. I have noticed that some problems are being experienced on dual boot systems. I have 7.1 on a stand alone AMD K-6 400 Soyo Mother board and except for lack of experience and understanding it loaded linux first time with not much of a problem. ** Reply to message from Jaguar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 31 Aug 00 19:33:25 EDT Partitioning is something that really needs to be considered when installing any operating system. I n reading this message thread I saw no mention of just how large the partition containing /home was and must say that in 9 + years of running various linux distros I have never encountered this problem. The command df -h will tell you in human readable terms just how full each of your partitions are , and is a command that I routinely use to discover just that information. You wouldn't try to put 2gig worth of data in a 1 gig partition would you ? I have seen many complaints on the list as to all the supposed short comings of linux. My advise is to allways realize what space you have to work with before trying to fill that space. My personal observations of comment's I have seen many of which seem to come from jaguar, whoever you may be, not knowing this gentelmans background or expertice I would have to make my own conclusion that he is obviously not very familiar with linux operating systems and I seriously believe that comment's as to certain short comings of an operating system which someone quite obviously knows little about should really not even be considered as worth $0.2 worth David M. kufta David M. Re: [newbie] Linux4Win - never again
I didnt like the linux4win because i thought it was really hard to play with the kernal, i didnt really understand the different ways. I think it is much better to just repartition your drive or even go out and buy a small 5 gigger or somthing. Im runing mandrake 7.1 on a 4 gig drive with 98 on a 10. I wish I could switch that around but I havnt been able to get all the corel software for linux, and it sucks up all my space on my 10. Let lilo do the booting and forget the linux4win for now. Maybe in the future... PS. If you are like me you love to tweak with windoze ini files and have to reinstall windwos once a month. If you use linux4win all your information is lost when you reinstall windoze by what i understand. ~Lance

[newbie] Full Harddrive Warning
Is there anything to warn me about having a totally full harddrive? Today Linux was deleting everything I opened up, and I had no idea why. Eventually it struck me to check how full my /home partition was, and low and behold it was 100% full. I didn't lose anything too important thank goodness, but it would have been a lot better if something would have told me that I was out of disk space. Windows has a dialog box pop up if you have less than 75MB left, but I never recieved any kind of warning in Linux. Is there such a program or do I just have to keep up with how much space I'm taking up? -- Anthony http://binaryfusion.net Computers are not intelligent. They only think they are.

[newbie] kmix not working
I installed Mandrake 7.1 on a k6-200 with 64MB and using a Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum 16 sound card. I use this same system with different harddisks (removable trays) and the soundcard works find for other distributions (e.g. Caldera 2.3, Win98 and RedHat 6.2). The cdplayer works and so do the system sounds..I can hear the cd and sounds through the speakers but at a low volume. When I select the speaker icon (kmix) the kmix window opens but the volume control slider (and the other sliders) does nothing. Any ideas as to why I cannot control the volume using kmix? -- Dean J. Re: [newbie] ESS Audio still not working
Dennis: I have a similar problem...I have a MV Pas16 sound card which works fine under windows98 and with the COL2.3 Linux. With Mandrake 7.1 I get output from the Line Out of the card but it is at a low level. I cannot seem to get kmix to control the volume. (kmix is the program you get when you click on the speaker icon on the bottom of the screen (kde). Any ideas why kmix does not seem to work with in Mandrake 7.1? btw: the correct command is sndconfig. Path is /usr/sbin/sndconfig Dean. "Julio C. Title: RE: [newbie] cannot connet to internet Hi, from the KDE desktop click on the internet link to bring up Kppp box. Click on setup and then in the little window it should show what you named your internet connection. Like "Earthlink" or what ever. If nothing shows click "add" if something is there click "edit". Then you should put in the DNS addresses for you service provider in the appropriate places, I can't remember which tabs they are but check each tab to make sure the correct info is in there. The PAP or CHAP should be selected and set your modem speed to the appropriate setting. (I always set mine one step higher than it actually is like at 112 K instead of 56K. RE: [newbie] Help setting up DSL
Sounds like you might have the same problem I was having. If your ethernet uses pppoe (ppp over ethernet) like Bell Atlantic, you need to do this. Glenn was kind enough to sned me these instructions that worked wonderfully for me, so I'm attatching his email below. -Paul Paul, you need to get a program called rp-pppoe-2.2.tar.gz from Roaring Penguin. Their web site is www.roaringpenguin.com. Download the newest version and install it per their instuctions. It's a very easy program to set up. Answer the 5 or 6 questions when you RUN the adsl-setup program (actually, it runs itself at the end of the questions) and you should be good to go. I use this program myself. When I first tried it out I could connect but couldn't move to any web pages. I found that I needed to add my ISP's dns server address to my /etc/resolve.conf and all was well. That done, I connect and surf to my heart's delight. To disconnect you type ADSL-STOP. Good luck. Oh, one other thing, pay VERY close attention to their 'how to connect' text file. This will help to resolve any other problems you may encounter. They really seem to know what they're talking about. :) Glenn Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registered Linux user #175132 Linux-Mandrake 7.0 Check out the latest in independent media at http://www.indymedia.org . -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jeffrey P. I have had DSL for a while functioning properly on a windows box. I bought a new machine and am dual booting it with win98 and mandrake 7.1. The different computers access the same DSL line via a hub. Win98 on my new machine works fine with the DSL. To configure it on the linux partition, I used the same settings as found in the windows network applet in the control panel: - same IP (it is a static one) - same netmask - same gateway - same DNS host - same DNS ip addresses - DHCP is disabled I didn't mess with anything else. Also, it seemed to find my 3Com card fine (3c905 10/100). When I type "ifconfig etho" it displays the proper stats of my card. "less /etc/conf.modules" display (what I think) is the proper driver: 3c59x. I didn't mess with any other settings. I cannot successfully ping any site or log onto any web site. I don't getting any errors when restarting inetd or httpd. Any suggestions? Thanks much. -jeff _ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
[newbie] ethernet module won't install
Hi team, I installed kernel 2.2.16 and now my net card won't load. It did on first kernel. I upgraded via the rpm. In console it says vm linux linked to correct kernel but in kfm it says unknown. I removed the old kernel efventually and reinstalled the kernel 3 times I got this message with modprobe "/etc/conf.modules is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.16- 9mdk/modules.depmodprobe: Can't locate module tmp" Anyone have an idea how I can fix it, besides reinstalling. However I will if necessary. cheers, Mike cheers, Mike (in Adelaide, South Australia)

[newbie] DHCP fails at boot time to allocate IP address
Environment: Mandrake 7.1 (CD-ROM) Linksys Router (which does DHCP) Linksys NIC CableModem During the installation of I selected dhcpd/bootpd and left the IP address blank. When I finished the installation and rebooted for the first time it brought up eth0 ok [ PASSED ], but when it went to grap an IP from the DHCP server (the router) it failed. The two windows machine handle the DHCP fine so I know, I assume, that the DHCP server is working... After I logged in I used DrakX to try to reluctantly specify an IP address: 192.168.1.103 (the other two (Windows) machines are .101 and .102 via DHCP). Thought DrakX didn't complain or show an error this didn't worked. So I tried adding a gateway: 192.168.1.1 No error, but didn't work either. Then I went to the command line and typed ifconfig all I get back is something like: [root@tux /root]# ifconfig loLink encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.0 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1 RX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 I didn't see eth0 and I didn't see the loop back address 127.0.0.1, only 127.0.0.0 - i'm at a loss here. When I typed route all I saw was something like: [root@tux /root]# route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface 127.0.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 lo Then when I tried for fun to add a gateway by hand: route add -net default gw 192.168.1.1 dev eth0 it says something like SIOADDRNORT or something... I've read 3 or 4 HOWTO about setting up the ethernet stuff, and none of it has helped me. Any suggestion on how to trouble shoot this. How can I determine for sure that the OS is seeing my NIC?
[newbie] Linux4Win - never again
I downloaded Mandrake 7.1 yesterday, burned a cd and just (4 hours ago) tried to install Linux 4 Windows... Setup crashed and after that I wasn't able to boot Windows or Linux. That was a bit frightening experience and I really can't recommend Linux4Win after this. Anyone had better luck? -veikko £:-) P.S. I'm using Win95 by the way. Anyone tried with 98 or 2000?

What IS preventing Wine from finding and executing your request is your path statement. It WAY wrong. You don't reference your "partition" identity in the path. If that is a correct representation of the path on your computer to the Windows Notepad program the path statement should look like this: /mnt/windows/windows/notepad.exe The full command line command with arguments looks like this: wine /mnt/windows/windows/notepad.exe the | the path statement prog | wine = the program being invoked /mnt = dir on linux fs where the windows folder lives /windows = the actual vfat partition /windows = the windows dir within the windows partition notepad = the executable desired to be run Hope this helps, -- Mark

Re: [newbie] problem with emacs
Hi, There are two possibilities, and hence two solutions: 1. The libraries are copied but they are not installed to your system. Try control-panel or glint (as root) from a xterm to verify if the library is installed. If not, install it. 2. If the library is installed and works well, you may "deceive" your PC by creating a logical link: ln -s /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libXaw3d.so.6 /thedirectory/libXaw3d.so.6 where "thedirectory" is the one where emacs expects to be found (I don't know exactly which, probably /usr/X11R6/lib). Good luck, Chris, and tell us informed about your success (I hope).
