Neat. Seems that there are a lot of people on the mandrake lists from teh western washington area. I got my copy of quake3 at the EB in pacific place mall in downtown seattle. EB is the only software store around here that I've found that carries a lot of linux software & distro's on shelf. Let me know when you get your copy & get it running. We'll have to play. [newbie] Dual Processor Support
I have just installed mandrake 7.0 and when I hit ctrl-Alt F1 to look at what Mandrake thinks that I have it says that I have 1 600 mhz celeron processor, when I am sctually running a BP-6 with two celerons 533 on it. I have the board clocked and I scaled back just to make sure that that was not the problem, but needless to say.. I don't even know where to start. So far I really like Mandrake, but I have to have the dual support. Anyone even know where I can start?? thanks!! Donnie R. Shelton [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [newbie] OT Linux gaming OT -- Heroes 3
To be honest with you - I haven't had ANY luck running Q3. Dacia on this list has had better luck using the voodoo cards, but I'm using a Matrox G400 max (which was supposed to work with this game - out of the box) which has not worked at all. I've tried xf3.3.x, xf4; I've tried using SuSE 7.0 (which I was able to grab off of a German mirror which has since been closed??) as well as every version of Mandrake that I've upgraded to - it's been very disappointing. On the other hand, I also have Q2 which uses software rendering and works great! I love to frag! I'm anxiously awaiting the day that I can actually use my copy of Q3 - I've even considered buying a new voodoo just so I can, but I just built this system to add to my home network and that was a couple thousand - my wife has confiscated my piggy bank for awhile... NERO trys to make it hard to record from an ISO. There is no info in the manual or on their web site. Here is what you need to do: 1) Find the folder to which you downloaded the ISOs, right click on each and choose rename;(example) mandrake 71-ext.iso change to mandrake 71-ext.nrg mandrake 71-inst.iso change to mandrake 71-inst.nrg 2) Launch NERO 3) Close the New Compilation window so that you have only the main window open. 4) From the toolbar along the top of the window select CD Recorder/ Choose recorder and be sure your CD-RW is picked as the recording device. 5) From the File menu select Burn image. In the pop-up window navigate to the folder with the .nrg file and click on one and click OK 6) A Foreign Image File box will open. Click OK. 7)A Foreign Image Setting box will open. Change it were necessary to show the following values: Data mode 1; Block Size 2048: and the Swapped option should be checked.Click OK. 8) A Write CD window will open. If you have not done much burning and are not familiar with your CD-RWs abilities check all 4 boxes, test speed, simulate, burn, and finalize. By doing this NERO will auto select the burn speed. Finally in the top right of the window click the Write button and the process of burning the CD will begin. When the 1st CD is finished follow steps 5-8 to create the 2nd. Hope I have not made it seem too complicated. If you have any problems or other questions you can reply to the list or, contact me direct if you choose. Charles

RE: [newbie] ISO files
The iso image already is bootable so you should be able to just use the iso cd. I've just downloaded nero to try out on win2000 (because the idiots at Adaptec don't feel they should have to support their software with win2k), but with easy cd creator under win98 you just double click on the iso file and it does the rest. With nero I believe that the option to make a bootable cd is if you copy raw data and specify an 'image file' (such as cdrom.img found under the /images directory) to be burned onto the root directory. The idea behind the iso image being premade is so that you can just put that file on a disk and all the preparation work has been done for you. Mike hey, I just downloaded the ISO files for Mandrake 7.1 (650MB and 340MB) now how exactly do I burn them? I'm using Nero software which give's you an option to burn CD (ISO) or CD (Boot), etc. my system supports the boot from CD, I'm just not sure how burning an ISO file on a CD will make it bootable... cheers, paul.

[newbie] Tips for buying a hardware
Tips for buying a hardware (http://forum.mandrakesoft.com/article.php3?sid=2902110054) I just saw a "linux buyers guide" on Duke of URL-s site, and this reminded me of one very important FAQ: Although linux hardware support has immensly improved, there are still products out there which are either completely useless for a Linux-user, have binary-only or beta-quality drivers. Winmodems, winprinters, PP scanners, some Adaptec SCSI controllers... It is a long list, and you do not even want to know it .-) So, what would be the easiest way to avoid unpleasant surprises? Well, I hope to see "Cool, it works with Linux", or even "designed for Mandrake-Linux" stickers on the hardware one day, but we are not quite there yet. In the meantime, here are some possibilities, ordered according to ammount of work you have to invest: 1) Buy from a linux-friendly store. If you buy from a dedicated linux-hardware company, or go shopping on a Linux-Mall, chances of surprises will be rather low. 2) Ask in the shop. I have been shopping for computer parts for years, and in some dedicated hardware stores this works really good. This will still not bring you very far in a warehouse, I am afraid. 3) Ask the hardware producer. This is a very nice vay of finding out if the product works with linux or not: All you have to do is find a contact e-mail, and ask "Does your graphic card XY work with Mandrake Linux 7.1?". If they do not know, don't buy. Binary-only drivers usually mean trouble too. OK, these were the "easy" solutions, but if you really want to, there are other ways too; 4) Search the mailing lists archives and other searchable archives (like this site). For Mandrake-Linux, I would start by digging in "newbie" and "expert" archives, and continue with other sources of info mentioned on our "Support" page. In particular, searching in "dejanews" is very powerfull. 5) Consult some big web-search site. Search for "Yourhardwarepiecename" + "Linux" + "support" or such... Sometimes it works really good - I use this approach all the time. 6) RTFM. A good starting point is Linux-Hardware HOWTO, There are also other ways - for instance one could ask friends, people in mailing lists, consult some "buyers guide" (Duke of URL looks qute nice to me, and he is a great fun of LM too .-), read the horoscope or whatever... However, I really think that today there are enough Linux-friendly shops out there, so if you want to save your nervs use one of the first three metods and be happy. As a side effect, linux-unfriendly shops will die out, which will make my tips completely obsolete. ;-

[newbie] pppd dies and not all ram found
Hi all. I have installed mdk 7.1 and am very happy with it apart from two serious things: 1) I can't get ppp to work. Using kppp I input my dialup no , and after it connects I get a message saying "pppd has died unexpectedly". I get the message as soon as I try to connect with gnome ppp. I have not entered the ips of my ISP, I don't know them and didn't need them with caldera. Would this have caused it, and if so can I put in 0.0.0.0 for both dns servers (this is what is in it for caldera and it works). I did a whole fresh install and it still was happening. 2) Only 64mb of my 256mb of ram is recognised. In the installation in the field total ram , (found 64mb) i put in 256. If I reinstall how can I get all my ram to work? If these two probs can be fixed I would reinstall mandrake (for the 4th time...), I liked it loads apart from them. What I did was remove the package (kpackage, as root) and reinstall it. Then it worked. I use it only to show what's new, then I download things by hand, one at the time (online time = money here). For instance, I just downloaded the kernel-2.2.16-9mdk.i586.rpm package and installed that offline. I don't take chances with things like that. [newbie] Where did my sound go?
I am having a problem with my sound. card (Sound Balster AWE64). I tried to upgrade my Mandrake 7.1 system using packages from Mandrake Cooker a few weeks ago. After a reboot, I found that my sound card no longer worked. There's nothing wrong with my card -- it works fine in Win2000. I believe that what I installed may have somehow wrecked the settings. Here's a list of the packages of what I installed: BitchX-75p3-12mdk.i586.rpm linux_logo-3.05-3mdk.i586.rpm Device3Dfx-2.3.4-7mdk.i586.rpm linuxconf-1.18-4mdk.i586.rpm GXedit-1.23-5mdk.i586.rpm locales-2.3-7mdk.noarch.rpm alsa-2.2.16_0.5.7-9mdk.i586.rpm locales-en-2.3-7mdk.noarch.rpm chkconfig-1.2.7-2mdk.i586.rpm make-3.79.1-5mdk.i586.rpm chkfontpath-1.7-3mdk.i586.rpm man-1.5h1-5mdk.i586.rpm cups-1.1.2-11mdk.i586.rpm man-pages-1.31-1mdk.noarch.rpm dosfstools-2.4-3mdk.i586.rpmmodutils-2.3.15-1mdk.i586.rpm drakfont-0.52-2mdk.i586.rpm mount-2.10o-1mdk.i586.rpm esound-0.2.19-6mdk.i586.rpm mpage-2.5.1-12mdk.i586.rpm g-print-0.2-7mdk.i586.rpm mpg123-0.59r-12mdk.i586.rpm gedit-0.9.0-2mdk.i586.rpm mtools-3.9.7-3mdk.i586.rpm gftp-2.0.7b-1mdk.i586.rpm netscape-common-4.75-3mdk.i586.rpm ggv-0.95-2mdk.i586.rpm netscape-navigator-4.75-3mdk.i586.rpm gqview-0.8.2-4mdk.i586.rpm pam-0.72-7mdk.i586.rpm gtkhtml-0.5-3mdk.i586.rpm playmidi-2.4-15mdk.i586.rpm gurpmi-0.6-5mdk.i586.rpmppp-2.4.0-1mdk.i586.rpm imwheel-0.9.8-4mdk.i586.rpm rxvt-2.6.1-9mdk.i586.rpm jed-B0.99.11-4mdk.i586.rpm sh-utils-2.0-11mdk.i586.rpm jed-common-B0.99.11-4mdk.i586.rpm sndconfig-0.44-12mdk.i586.rpm kups-0.8-1mdk.i586.rpm svgalib-1.4.1-6mdk.i586.rpm lha-1.14f-3mdk.i586.rpm switchdesk-2.1-4mdk.i586.rpm libc-5.3.12-34mdk.i586.rpm switchdesk-gnome-2.1-4mdk.i586.rpm libgtop-1.0.9-4mdk.i586.rpm switchdesk-kde-2.1-4mdk.i586.rpm libjpeg-6b-15mdk.i586.rpm symlinks-1.2-10mdk.i586.rpm libmikmod-3.1.9-2mdk.i586.rpm time-1.7-16mdk.i586.rpm libpng-1.0.8-2mdk.i586.rpm timeconfig-3.0.2-8mdk.i586.rpm libsigc++-1.0.1-3mdk.i586.rpm timetool-2.7-4mdk.noarch.rpm libstdc++-2.95.2-10mdk.i586.rpm tree-1.3-3mdk.i586.rpm libstdc++-compat-2.95.2-10mdk.i586.rpm unarj-2.43-13mdk.i586.rpm libtiff-3.5.5-2mdk.i586.rpm unzip-5.41-3mdk.i586.rpm libungif-4.1.0-7mdk.i586.rpmurw-fonts-1.1-11mdk.noarch.rpm libxml-1.8.9-3mdk.i586.rpm wget-1.5.3-12mdk.i586.rpm Upon rebooting, gmix (the GNOME mixer, which I run at startup) told me (and continues to tell me whenever I start GNOME) that it souldn't find the mixer settings. It then suggested to check if sound support was compiled into the kernel. I figured that since sound worked before and I had not done a kernel recompile (besides, sound was always loaded as a module) this was not the problem. I tried running Mandrake's Lothar Soundconfig, but this didn't help (not that it did before). Red Hat's sndconfig, which had brought my card to life in the past, only gave me an error, saying that modutils (which as you can see above I had replaced) was reading from one file (I think /etc/conf.modules) instead of another (I think /etc/modules.conf). I then tried replacing modutils with a version from Red Hat 6.2, and then one from my Mandrake 7.0 CD. I even tried uninstalling Alsa. These did not help at all, and at startup I always get the same errors: Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996 sb: dsp reset failed. When I try "insmod sound" at a console (as root) I get the error: /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdk/misc/sound.o: a module named sound already exists And when I try "insmod sb" I get: /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdk/misc/sb.o: unresolved symbol probe_uart401_R6467f99b /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdk/misc/sb.o: unresolved symbol unload_uart401_Recfdd9c9 /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdk/misc/sb.o: unresolved symbol uart401intr_R6391d066 /lib/modules/2.2.16-9mdk/misc/sb.o: unresolved symbol attach_uart401_R45af1327 I have also been told by Linux that /dev/dsp is not a device, when I know that it had represented the sound card before this all happened. If anyone can help me find a solution to this problem I would be much obliged. -- _ Sridhar Dhanapalan Hi! I'm a .signature virus! Copy me into your ~/.signature to help me spread! _

A few suggestions here - Upgrade to whatever is the newest version of netscape-navigator. Don't even try to use communicator. Communicator seems to be unstable on some systems, and there are better options for everything it gives you over the plain navigator package. Try increasing your cache size in netscape. The correct shutdown command should be typed in the command line and look like this: shutdown now -h When the command line reads powerdown you're free to turn off the machine with doing any damage to the file system. > > 2. When I browse the net using Navigator, some times after visiting several > sites my hard will begin to read continously. After that Navigator hangs and > I can't even kill it. Sometimes the whole system will not respond at all. My > system has Windows 98 running on another partition, which shows no problem > while browsing. > First, what version of Netscape are you running? Secondly, there is a program listed in the menu under Applications ->Monitoring ->Process management. This program will show you all the processes running when Netscaoe freezes and you will be able to kill the runaway process. If your desktop locks up and you can't get anything to work there are several things you can do without resorting to a hard boot. 1) CTRL-ALT-F1 will take you to a console login prompt. FRom here you can login as root and find out the offending process and kill it. you can find it by issuing the command 'top' on the command line, read the CPU usage percentage, type 'k' and then supply the PID which is listed down the left side of the display. 2) when that's accomplished you can get back the X graphical login, if in fact this is the method you're using to log into your machine. This is done by performing the following steps: CTRL-ALT-F7 This will restart X and you will be delivered to the X-windows login screen. I seriously doubt that windows has anything what-so-ever to do with your troubles. It sounds alot like the problems a lot of folks are experiencing to one degree or another with Netscape though. As far as Netscape goes, if all else fails uninstall the version of Netscape you're running and install Communicator 4.61. That version at least is stable enough that it won't give you the troubles you're having at the moment. There is also the alternative of running Mozilla which is very fast surpassing recent releases of Netscape Communicator and Netscape 6. The difference in the two are these: Netscape Communicator & Netscape 6 are being coded and released by AOL. In plain words since AOL bought Netscape took over the reigns Netscape Communicator has gone to hell in a hand-basket. It sucks and it isn't getting any better. Mozilla in the other hand is still being coded by a lot of Netscapes' original programmers as well as the open source community and programmers all over the world that adhere to the original programming standards that USED to be Netscape. The Mozilla project is progressing beautifuly. The latest release, M17, while being somewhat resource hungry, is quite nice in appearence and functionality. The nightly releases of M18 are getting even better. It's not quite there yet, but from what I've seen so far it's going to be GREAT browser/email client/editor suite when it's finished. Mark

Re: [newbie] mandrake7.1 iso integrity
i just mounted the downloaded iso as a filesystem and examined the floppy images from within that, bypassing the need to burn a cd, the md5sum for cdrom.img in /images/ still does not match. any ideas please, i visited the mandrake website but there is no mention of this bascule bascule wrote: > > i just (took for ever actually) downloaded the two isos for 7.1, the > md5sums check out for both, after burning using xcdroast and verifying > the burnt image to be the same as the downloaded iso and double checking > the md5sum of the iso to be sure, there is still a discrepency between > the actual md5sum of the cdrom.img and the one quoted, this probably > explains whay installing from a floppy made from this image falls over, > but i can't see how this can be unless mandrake made an iso with a > faulty floppy image in it. > > any ideas, suggestions? > > the version file in the root of the burnt cdrom reads 'Linux-Mandrake > Helium 2517' > > bascule

[newbie] Shutdown problem
Hi, I'm a new user of Linux from India. I've with me LM 7.1 Complete. I've two problems 1. When I issue the Shutdown command from the console of KDE desktop, it will close X-Windows and restarts (without rebootng) Linux in character based single user mode. Here it automatically logins as root without asking any password, even if I was logged as a normal user when issuing shutdown command. It may create a security problem. Why is it so? 2. When I browse the net using Navigator, some times after visiting several sites my hard will begin to read continously. After that Navigator hangs and I can't even kill it. Sometimes the whole system will not respond at all. My system has Windows 98 running on another partition, which shows no problem while browsing. My System configuration is as follows: Intel PIII 450 64MB RAM 10GB IDE HDD nVidia Vanta AGP card with 16MB VRAM 40X CDROM Linux is on a 2GB ext2 partition with around 950MB free diskspace.
