I hope thats just typo, but linux will be looking for /etc/resolv.conf ^^ I wouldnt normally respond, but I just spent an hour tracking down a ppp dialing error. Re: [newbie] More C++ problems
Alright, I was finally able to install the developer version of Linux, I just used the one CD and it worked. Anyway, now I use g++ (part of the gcc) at school. What happens now is that none of the libraries are there. I checked using whereis iostream.h -- nothing. I know that I can download it from the internet, any ideas on where to find it? Is it in an RPM file or will I have to use a tar? Anyway, hopefully by tomorrow this will be solved. Just got one. Set your flamethrowers on high because I didn't look until afterward to see if Canon supported Linux. I know that the 600 and the 4000 series printers were supported. Anyone out there running a BJC-6000, or am I going to have to hook this thing up to a winblows box and print to it whenever it isn't busy crashing? P.S.: Any Canon people out there reading this, please direct your flamethrowers at your marketing department. Re: [newbie] cna't ping on local network
Um, have you set these ipchains rules yourself? Or, is some script setting them for you? Did you know that you have ipchains rules set in the first place? (Stupid question, I know, but it doesn't hurt to ask). You may want to check to make sure your internal IPs do not exists in hosts.deny. Let me know what secuirty level you installed MDK with. Check to make sure that your ipchains rules do not DENY the 192.168.0.0 subnet for the internal network. For some reason your machine is set to drop packets on port 8, or it may be set to drop everything from non-routable subnets (10.0.0.0, 176, 127.0.0.0, 172.16.0.0, 192.168.0.0) on all interfaces--I don't know, and can't tell from here without more info. Re: [newbie] pmfirewall and portsentry test?
OK, I keep repeating myself, but it doesnt seem to do much good... so one more time and I'm through: www.grc.com is a decent site, and I'm not trying to knock it, but for linux it doesn't hold much validity. It is a site for WINDOWS security, and tests machines as though they are Windows boxes. This means that would-be open linux hacks will not be tested for. It is better to set up your firewall and portscan detection, and go to www.hackerwhacker.com. No, I do not get any kick-back...The first scan is free--it IS a rough scan, however. And... it may work your hard drive for an hour or two if you have lots of logging turned on. Of course, if you have portsentry running, you may wish to put their IP address in the portsentry.ignore file temporarily so that you actually get the scan report when they're finished. Portsentry will can their IP quite rapidly. grc.com gives a false sense of security to linux users as it usually says "There is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that a port (or even any computer) exists at this IP address!" It can only detect one of my ports open, and I already know it's open! But what it cannot detect, is that I also have portscan detection bound and listening to linux's vulnerable ports ready to lock out anyone who tries to poke around in those areas. These bindings should show open ports, but grc.com doesn't see them, because it doesn't test for them. www.hackerwhacker.com uses an outside nmap scan, and doesn't have any prejudices about which OS you're running, it'll hit you for whatever it can find. Their paid services go even further, but you'll be surprised by the ports it finds open after you've relied on grc.com. --Greg - Original Message - From: "Ronald J. The majority of the info I have been reading on firewalls, and pmfirewall in particular, refers to a second machine setting between you and the outside world. What about the typical dial up client? Does pmfirewall work here as well? -- Barry :-)

Just remember that GRC only tests a few certain well defined ports. Better idea would be to download nmap or saint and THEN scan yourself (just remember to turn off portsentry first otherwise you'll lock youself out of your machine) Dan

I forgot to include that. i think I did that already: This is for the host.allow file for 196.168.0.2: # # hosts.allow This file describes the names of the hosts which are # allowed to use the local INET services, as decided # by the '/usr/sbin/tcpd' server. # ALL: 127. Re: [newbie] I am having problems with my modem
On the WinNT mouse issue... This is a pain-in-the-arse problem very common to MS, I have had it happend to me a few times in the past (someone's wheel mouse goes down, and I don't have an exact replacement, have to substitute a serial mouse for the interim and it f***s things up!). I had never taken the time to try this, but you might just to see if it works...Of course, if it doesn't, you'll get used to using the ALT, TAB, Arrow, Shift and ENTER keys! Check in Start|Settings|ControlPanel|Devices to see that device "mssermou" (no that's not a typo--it's the device controller for the serial mouse) is set to start up with "system".Cloick OK, close, etc. In regedit, search for "mssermou.sys" it should already be set to 0x0001. Double click the device path, and change the 1 (hex/decimal-doesn't matter it's only a 1 or 2) to a "2" (no quotes).click OK, close the registry and restart. If that doesn't work, there is another place to edit the mssermou "Pointer Port" settings. These are located in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mssermou. My settings look like this (but I have a PS/2 mouse!): (Default)(value not set) ErrorControl 0x (0) Group"Pointer Port" Start 0x0001 (1) Tag 0x0002 (2) Type 0x0001 (1) Don't ask me what exaclty these mean, I haven't played with them before...but if you can back up your registry, you'll prevent any permanent damage! :-) OR: if you're willing to wait a day or two, I can give it a try at work (I'm sure as hell not screwing up my machine at home :-) !) and get back to you... I have a couple of macines at work that I can temporarily destroy--I'll just restore a new image on them if they need to be used. --Greg - Original Message - From: "Mark Thurston" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Actually, I just tried to change the settings on my modem, it uses jumpers. > The problem is, when I changed it to COM2, no matter what I tried, I could > not get it to work in NT. Actually, I just tried to change the settings on my modem, it uses jumpers. The problem is, when I changed it to COM2, no matter what I tried, I could not get it to work in NT. I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked. I tried to detect it and NT said that it did not exist, I know that the jumpers were set correctly, I still have the manual, and it is quite specific. I had to change everything back in order to send this email. At any rate, NT is just driving me crazy. Of course I am having trouble with Linux too, so I guess that I should be used to this frustration by now. Re: [newbie] pmfirewall
By "logged on the internet" do you mean dial-ed up? If so, ppp0 should be your external interface, and any NIC card masquerading an internal network should be the internal interface. If you have cable and simply mean that you started using the internet, eth0 should probably be the right choice, and you'll need to provide information as to how you set up your system so we can better answer the question. You can very easily re-run the install script to fix this. If you have any questions... just ask. --Greg - Original Message - From: "Rob" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Hi Everybody, > > I just installed pmfirewall and that other program I forgot what it's call. > well anyway, After installing it, then I restarted it. You obvoiusly have to add each machine's IP address to the other mashine's /etc/host.allow file. You can either do this by simply typing the IP address, or as foolws: ALL:192.168.0.x where 'x' is the other machines number on the subnet. --Greg - Original Message - From: "Dan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > I'm having a problem connecting two machines: one > running Mandrake 7.1 and one running 6.1. [newbie] cna't ping on local network
I'm having a problem connecting two machines: one running Mandrake 7.1 and one running 6.1. The machine running 7.1 has Roadrunner on eth0 with the IP assigned by DHCP and this works fine. I put a second NIC car in this machine (DFE-530TX+) and it seem to be working per IF config info: eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:BA:40:57:43 inet addr:192.168.0.1 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:10 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:2 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 Interrupt:18 Base address:0xd800 I gave the card in the machine running 6.1 the address 192.168.0.2. I set 192.168.0.1 machine as the gateway. The problem is I can't Ping the other machine. I can ping the the machines locally i.e. 192.168.0.1 can be pinged from 192.168.0.1. When I try to Ping 192.168.0.1 from 192.168.0.2. Nothing happens. When I ctrl C I get a message that all packets were lost. The same thing happens in reverse. I did happen to look in /var/log/messgaes in the machine that was pinged and found the following: Sep 12 18:37:09 cm-24-161-17-97 kernel: Packet log: input DENY eth1 PROTO=1 192.168.0.2:8 192.168.0.1:0 L=84 S=0x00 I=34 F=0x T=64 (#30) This appears in both machines log files for every packet sent. It appears there is some sort of security setting that is dropping the packets? I just can't figure out where. Both machines have IP chains and PM firewall installed since both at one time or another have had internet access. The one currently with internet access has PM firewall running on eth0. On the other machine I ran "PM Firewall stop". Any help much appreciated. __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - Free email you can access from anywhere! http://mail.yahoo.com/

RE: [newbie] PCI Hardware Modem Says "Sorry, the modem is busy."
Bill, thank-you. This is great info on how to determine my modem model type. I plan to open up my PC soon and do what you said below to determine my modem type. My modem is now working thanks to pezcal (see other replys on this same subject). Hi pezcal, You were CORRECT! Thanks. I disabled USB from starting via drakconf, drakxservices. The modem was then detected and I get a dial tone. Previously, under drakconf, Hardware Config, the modem was not detected. Thanks again. Re: [newbie] PCMCIA Ethernet Card
Hi -- I had a similar problem, also a Linksys card (although a different one) and a Toshiba Satellite (again a different one) and largely solved it. The secret was to make sure PCMCIA was loaded. Once it was, the system recognized the card as a PCMCIA network card -- not as the driver that supposedly corresponded to it. Try loading PCMCIA and not specifying the network driver. Linux is fast with 128 megs. It is much faster with 256 and when you put 384 in it really starts to cook. I imagine that a 'hammer with a gig of ram would pretty much do everything right as the thought to do it first crossed your mind. Imagine a world where X and netscape don't push you into swap even though you've got enough ram to power a small third world nation. Re: [newbie] kudzu - A Clarification
I have swapped motherboards with no problem under linux. You should make an attempt to turn kudzu back on before you do, or you could run into problems.. Also, if you have PnP disabled in this BIOS, make sure you disable it in the BIOS of the new MOBO... this can royally screw you by swapping comm ports and making NICs and things do funny dances. I wound up having my eth0 and eth1 swapped on me without warning, and I felt like an idot after an hour of fiddling to find that it was the damnable PnP. --Greg - Original Message - From: "Paul" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > On Wed, 13 Sep 2000, John Rye wrote: > > >I am running thru my list of startup services disabling > >all those I don't routinely need to load. > > > >I note that at each reboot (I doing lots at present) kudzu > >runs and does a check for new hardware. > > > >Do I really need to run this as the hardware doesn't change > >and is not likely to change in the near future? > > Somewhere in Linuxconf (don't recall exactly where in boot options) you > can switch off the hardware checker. > > >And out of that comes another question... [newbie] PCMCIA Ethernet Card
Hello again. First of all, thanks to everyone that helped me out earlier. Everyone has been a great help. I'm now entering the world of PCMCIA eithernet cards. I have a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 PC Card. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT Laptop. The instructions for the card say that I should be using the tulip.c drive. So, I run that graphical netconf thing, I enter in all of the stuff. I just guessed that eth0 was my ethernet card, but I can't be sure. Anyway, it fails to initialize when I reboot. Something about insmod trying to bring up eth0? Another wierd thing that happens during booting is that it keeps trying to find a directory called /proc/bus/pci/devices but it doesn't exist. Any thoughts? Thanks, Phil _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Share information about yourself, create your own public profile at http://profiles.msn.com.

Change your passwords to upper and lower case with a mixture of symbols, even with this your password can still be cracked but it would be a bit harder. If you are using icq or some sort of messenger..beware, when talking to someone, you and that person have a direct connection with each other, all that person has to do is run netstat -n on the command line and bingo..he has your IP address..easy as that, from there they can scan to see what ports are open on your system, hence the firewall so you can guard those ports. If you are getting regular attacks from the same person, you could be infected with a trojan, when you go on-line the trojan that sit's in your machine will send your IP address back to that hacker and then he will hack you again. This is just a brief outline, there are many way's that it can be done. Personally i don't use my linux box to go online as i don't feel it's secure enough yet, as i'm still learning linux, i use my windows box cos it's like fort knox...if you get mail from someone that you don't know and it has an attachment, don't open it [delete it] for all you know it could be a virus, soon as you open it, your infected...Oh yes, see all the stuff at the top of this e-mail, their's enough info there for you to be hacked..worrying isn't it...by the way, don't get the wrong idea...i'm not a hacker..i just study alot. Re: [newbie] Hacker on Licq
I usually go online when I'm using the computer and go offline when I'm not. Apparently, this hacker just secretly performed some work to alter my system and I was not even logged in as root. I thought I had fixed it when I deleted all the licq files and replaced it with my back-ups. I noticed something was not right. so I logged in as root to deleted the user and added another user. when I go logged on as the new user. there were a whole lot of features missing. and most of them were useless. I noticed when the system were creating the directory for me. It told me that it couldnt install some files from the /usr/share files. I'm like great. Time to reinstall the whole mandrake system. This time I got a few programs like pmfirewall and the other program others had suggested. I will be better prepared next time some crook try to break in. Luckily I have some other .tar.gz program that I've spent hours downloading put away in some secret place just in case I need it again. Rob - Original Message - From: "Oliver L. However ipchains is still a good idea (Search for the howto on ipchains) ... Another suggestion (until you can set up some rules in ipchains) is to grap some utilities from psionic .. namely "Port Sentry" This will not only log break in attempts based on ports you specify to monitor ... but will also drop IP's from your routing table preventing future attempts (I think the URl is www.psionic.com) Good Luck! That's true but only as long as you neglect to make a /boot partition for Linux to install the kernel into. If this is done then LILO works quite well not matter how big the drive is. I am running thru my list of startup services disabling all those I don't routinely need to load. I note that at each reboot (I doing lots at present) kudzu runs and does a check for new hardware. RE: [[newbie] Athlon thunderbird & ka7-100]
I generally canabalize from my old computer what I can when I build a new one. When I get enough left overs to make a complete system I do. Right now I've got my new system (duron 600 based) my most recent system (K6-III 400 based) and my first computer (NexGen P-110 based) all running. The NexGen is being groomed for work as a firewall/router while the other two are for daily use and online gaming. I usually either give the parts I don't need to friends/family that need them or I just hold on to them until I need them again. I'm looking forward to playing around with over clocking my duron system when I've replaced it with a sledghammer based system. I plan on using the change over to 64bit processors as my opportunity to go all linux. I won't have any legacy apps to keep my tied into windows at that point. With my 'record' of reinstalls - I thought it was worth the try. And I got the reward... Only problem I saw was a message from one of the rpms was a dependancy on the 2.2.14 headers. So I simply reloaded them. I don't yet know if I've given myself another headache, Advise anyone?? Now all I have to do is make DoD work the way I want it to... Re: [newbie] 2nd Harddrive question
LILO itself remains on your Linux fs. It writes a little modification to the boot sector of your bootable drive (whichever you tell it that is). The modification allows you to tell your machine what bootable partition (on any drive) to boot up. When you start the install, the program will ask you where you want to install Linux. You will then tell it which disk you want it on. It will let you set up partitions on that disk, and then it will let you write file-systems onto those partitions--what DOS users call formatting. Second question, when i put in cd to boot to the new drive does the Mandrake install give me a option to format drive, or do i have to figure out how to format drive before install of mandrake? And how would i do that if it is blank..? Thanks, markOpoleO

It does not support LBA and all my drives are set to auto detect. In 7.0 LILO would not even install so I had to use a boot disk. In 7.1 using Grub it is not a problem. BTW, I checked and there is no BIOS update available for the MOBO. Hello friends. I have installed the Linux mandrake 7.1 Complete Version on my computer. I selected the Normal mode of installation. I wish to develop a web site on my computer. I have done some ASP work before. Do u think APACHE server would have installed?? I referred to a book which gave me a path to look for files of Apache server but i did not find anything there. You mention (way down below here) that you modem is showing up on Com3. If we were discussing that other popular opsys, I be shouting very loud that that was the problem - under DOS Com1 & Com3 BOTH use irq4 and almost invariably cause conflict problems. Your suggestion re Gnome is probably valid for other users but not in this case. But thanks for the thought. Cheers -- ICQ# 89345394 Mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [newbie] More C++ problems
Mark The LBA is causing your problem NOT the # of CDs you install from. I did the Dev. install on 2 machines and on both used all 4 Cds with no problems. If your BIOS does not support LBA(Large Block Address) which is a fancy way of saying Large Harddrives then the bootloader you choose to use and were you install it are critical. Grub has no problem with it but the LILO as shipped with 7.1 does.
