[newbie] scandisk

2000-10-21 Thread chronos

Hi all,
Not to beat a dead horse but yes I can assure you all that windoze cannot
see linux. Windoze cant see anything outside of its partition, except linux
can see windows. Personally I would uninstall linux and format your C drive
and reinstall windoze and use partition magic and reinstall linux clean. If
that still doesnt work then get a new hard drive because then it really is
a hardware issue. I run scandisk and defrag once a month and it has never
hurt my linux partition. Give it a go and let us know what happens.

I...err actually use Windows and IE5.5 for my mail, but I only get
duplicate mail from mail groups, never duplicates of any mail sent directly
to me. And sometimes the duplicates will be missing the header or similar.

sounds like you did everything well except to make a "boot disk" for

Is the linux partition formated as a DOS partition instead of an linux

I am running @home and a smc1211tx card and everything is well.Try setting the
irq too 10 9 doesn't give high enough priority.I am also running mandrake 7.1.
Another thing that works is setting irq too 10 and use dhcp.Downside is that
you will have too either be a root, or have superuser priveledges and type
dhcpcd -I (client id=C*-A) from a term but it works fine. Hope it helps

yes...I'm getting there. Slowly but surely. There's a lot of good info

Re: [newbie] Dupes

Huh? Are we talking about the same Pine here? When I attach a file to a
message all I do in Pine is place the cursor beside the atrtachment
header, preses CTRL T which then goes to another screen within the Pine
windows already open where I can navigate to the file that I wish to
attach much like a file manager screen. When I find the desired file I
simply press "S" for select and the file is attached to the message. No
path typing needed. Heavens! If I had to type the entire path and file
name you better believe I would be using something else to send an
attachment. :) My typing is bad enough!

It sounds like the trouble is within your /home dir. Backup your data

If your controller was acting up this could easily cause such a
problem.

I wasn't part of the first round of this and certainly don't want to
argue with you about this. But consider that your Windows partition
is the first partition on the drive. Its boot sector is at the head
of the drive. Your Linux boot location is at a partition boundary.
If that partition boundary isn't maintained properly, it and your
Linux book code could easily get overwritten and yet not affect the
operation of Windows.

Unless you've got your Windows drive completely full, it's likely that
you can go into your partition table and truncate your Windows
partition by a few meg and it won't have any affect on the operation
of Windows. Expanding it by even a little bit will destroy your

Yep...you do a new installation, it identifies a location for the boot
info, puts it there and it works...until you set some program loose
that will do some writing at that partition boundary. Just a
thought...have you compared the exact sizes of partitions given you by
both Linux and DOS utilities? Do they agree in terms of start/end
points?

[newbie] Crashed Fetchmail

2000-10-21 Thread Dennis Myers

Hi all, I was trying to set up kmail and it crashed linux. tried to
reboot and got a kernel panic. I know my /home directory is still on
the hdc6 partition and swap is still there but have no idea how to get
back to being able to boot. I tried to do a upgrade hoping to write
back the files lost, but that tells me i don't have enough room on my
disk. I am using my 7.1 install on the hda disk right now. Can I access
the files on the hdc disk from the hda disk? Sometimes I just amaze
myself by my fearlessness in the face of my own ignorance. A little help
would be appreciated. Dennis M.

Agreed, though having to open another window to figure out the
filename I need to attach, followed by having to type in the path and
filename isn't what I'd call a good competitor with point and click

Re: [newbie] assigning ips to usernames. & Bind IP to user account?

2000-10-21 Thread cloak

Lee and I are trying to figure this out, and we both thought of
the list at the same time... anyway.

Basically, I have domain names (oh.. about 120) and I have IPs
(Class C). If someone wants a shell account on my machine, and
wants to use it for irc or whatever, I'd like the reverse DNS to
work. In order to do this, I have to specify an IP address.
That's easy enough. Where my problem arises is making the linux
machine 'understand' who I want that IP to be assigned to.

I understand how to setup the DNS (I have them all setup with
win2k), and how to point it to that machine (bind it to the NIC,
in this case eth0:0), what I don't understand is how do I get it
such that if I login to the machine with my username 'Cloak' for
instance, will it understand that its 207.188.100.99 (public IP)
and not the machine IP itself.

I don't know if I can make myself any more clear... I have no
idea how to do this, so that's probably the source of my problems.

(To give an analogy as I understand it. If you're doing IP based
hosting (vs named) each user account and resulting domain is
given an IP. That's basically what I'm trying to do, but I don't
necessarily want the webhosting done on the linux machine yet, so
no, i don't want to deal with Apache).

As for the 'cool' domain name, the other alternative use we're
trying to head for here is if a client has a website hosted with
me, and they want to use a shell account so they can keep an IRC
bot open to take questions about their business. And it would be
much more professional if it showed up as
[EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks.

Re: [newbie] Windows 98 Defrag and Linux Partitions

2000-10-21 Thread DataChannel

So a hardware problem would be completely missed by SMART and a clean FULL
format and a thorough scandisk and a defrag that results in erasing the
linux partition?

I would love to know how a hardware error would result in only wiping out
the linux partition and leaving the windows one fully intact with no errors
or anything.

Yet Linux can be reinstalled and work *perfectly* without *ever* crashing or
generating a single error on that same partition that the windows defrag so
kindly removed for me.

Um..yup, I believe that cache card might be necessary. :-)

On-board IDE controller? If so, try disabling the primary IDE in the BIOS
(if possible--some BIOSes don'r allow this) and connect the (a) hard drive &
the CD-ROM to the secondary IDE controller.

This very thing actually happened to my home firewall PC--the IDE controller
took ill, and I wound up changing the motherboard.

If you've got a pile of old, spare parts, they might be spare for a reason.
How did you come by these?

Your /etc/resolv.conf should contain three lines similar to:

search mydomain.com
nameserver: 24.2.9.43
nameserver: 24.2.9.45

Bernard,

I am assuming that you are using Netscape.

Can you try the following steps:

1.
Shutdown your computer

2.
Unplug (from the wall) the modem. Let it sit for about 15 seconds.

3.
Plug the cable modem back in the wall. In the end of the modem should be
4
green lights. When the modem starts up the 4 lights will blink on and
off - almost in
a circle.

4.
Allow the modem a 1 minute or so.

5. Restart your computer and reboot to Linux. Check to see what passed
and/or failed

6.
Log in as root.

   never say never.
I've dual booted since I began with linux several years ago. I've
not had a problem with Scandisk, other than that it's necessary to
run M$ OS's ;)
Consider all the possible combinations of bios settings, that
all motherboards aren't created equal (even from the same
manufacturer, based on the same chipset), all the different
harddrive schemes (even from the same manufacturer), and many other
variables, including the most common... there's a whole lot of
Windoze inspired junk hardware out there, specially the most popular
name brand ready made crap. It's amazing to me that more Linux
users don't have problems with M$ disk utilities screwing up Linux
file systems.
My experience has taught me, and I believe I'm in the vast
majority on this, when problems like this occur they're best
approached as caused by user, hardware, OS. In that order. If
overclocking or a ready made is involved (eg, Dell, Gateway, Compaq,
etc), then hardware might come before user.

compiling now and not crapping out on me. It was a real struggle there for
a while. I was just about to give up when I realized that it was actually
starting to work.

I'm a little brain-dead at the moment though as to what to do with this
new type of "protocol." I've got the basic HOWTO to read through although
I'd still like to use ipchains for now. I guess I'll go back to compiling
for now and see if I can get the support to work for ipchains. I couldn't
believe it, but I spent 6 hours total time configuring and compiling this
bugger to get it to the point to where it would work. Actually I've had
better luck with this "bleeding edge" kernel than with the other so-called
more stable versions of the kernel. go figure!

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Greg,

My machine is a dual boot of Win98SE and Mandrake 7.1 and the cable is
the proper type since the setup works in windows. I am double checking
ipchains to make sure I am allowing access. I use pmfirewall to set the

Re: [newbie] Hmmmmmm...no ipchains support!

2000-10-21 Thread Greg Stewart

Umm... sorry to break the news to you Mark, but I think you're gonna need to
recompile again! Kernel 2.4 uses something called iptables, not ipchains.
It's a new version of the rules which enables true routing capabilities.

The 2.4 kernel DOES, however, support ipchains...but this needs to be
selected at compile time. The ipchains support does limit the iptables
capabilities, though--the full routing ability is not available.

Again...sorry!

Re: [newbie] Unable to get Cable Modem Working

Hmm, your problem may be something totally different, but as a
particularly clueless newbie, I also kept finding that my network
card wouldn't connect after a reboot, although I could get it working
again in DrakConf. Turned out there's a "save configuration" button
in DrakConf that I'd never checked!

Not implying that you're quite as clueless as I was, but it might be
worth checking.

Re: [newbie] Unable to get Cable Modem Working

2000-10-21 Thread Greg Stewart

> Delay eth0 initialization Failed

> Use the ServerNameDirective to set it manually Failed

The first error here usually indicates that a DHCP client failed to obtain a
lease on an IP address. Are you supposed to be configured for DHCP with
@home? Or, is your IP supposed to be static...If @home gave you a static IP,
but (for some unknown reason) either pump or dchpcd are attemtping to get a
lease from your ISP, that could be your conflict... check either top or
ps-aux for one of those DHCP clients.

You'll need to stop the DHCP client if your IP is static. Or, if your IP is
dynamic, and pump or dhcpcd are not running, you'll need to run one (and
only one) of them.

The second two lines are simply the result of not having your host name
listed on the appropriate DNS server, and/or not included in the /etc/hosts
file along with your IP address--they really have nothing to do with
accessing the internet...but they will prevent Apache from serving a web
site on your machine. If you don't run a web server on your PC, you can stop
the httpd service at boot and you won't get these second two lines. Or,
simply add a line to /etc/hosts similar to the following, but use your
"real" IP address:

192.168.0.1 mypcname.myispdomain.com localhost.localdomain

Larry...John...Lonny and others,

I've done it! I managed to get Linux-2.4-test9 to compile and work! It's
running at the moment and it took a few times round and round to get
TCP/IP and PPP to work, but by God it's working. Now I'm curious to see if
I can get this Turtle Beach sound card working on here which was the
original reason I started on this adventure in the first place.

it may be... and it can happen,,, that your hard drive really does have a
problem (hardware) in the boot sector. it may die tomorrow and it may last

RE: [newbie] Unable to get Cable Modem Working

2000-10-21 Thread William Presho

The steps I took to configure the card are as follows:
Started DrakConf
Clicked on Network Configuration
Under Client Tasks tab, clicked on Basic host information
under Host name tab input the DNS Name provided to me by @Home
Under Adaptor 1 tab I set it up as follows
Config mode: Manual
Primary Name + Domain: my user name + subdomain address as provided by @Home
No Aliases
Next input the IP address
Put IN Netmast, net device eht0
Kernel Module rtl8139
I/O port 0 x 1000
IRQ = 9
Next put in IP of Name Server (DNS) 1 and 2
Next went to Routing and gateways, clicked on Set and entered my Gateway IP
Then Quit Quit and Activate Changes

As I stated before this setup will let me connect to the cable modem and use
the internet. But if I shut the computer down and then restart it I get the
following:
Delay eth0 initialization Failed
Starting httpd: httpd:cannot determine local host name
Use the ServerNameDirective to set it manually Failed

I hope this will help you to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it.
Thanks Bill

Um... "shutting down and rebooting" just ain't enough information for me
figure out what's gone wrong.

Please list the steps you took to configure the card, whether you happened
to use a static IP, or have cofigured pump or dhcpcd. Whether you are
activating your NIC at boot, etc.

Hello All
I know this has probably been discussed here before, but I can't find
anything that helps me.

I have @home with an SMC1211TX Ethernet Card. I have used the help files and
set it up accordingly, using drake config. It tells me that everything is
okay but will not connect. Also I have an extra drive so I clean installed
Mandrake 7.1 on it and everything worked perfectly until I shut the machine
off and then tried to bring it back up, it would not connect. I wiped the
drive and clean installed again and it worked, but when I shut down same
problem won't connect.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Bill Presho

Bill,

First of all, did you try powering down your computer, turning off the modem
for 15 seconds. Some modems may have to be reset the first time. Allow
another 15 to 20 second for reset. Start the computer in Linux. In addition,
are you using Netscape?

Other Information to Check

Did you get a static IP address or are you set up using DHCP?

Your numbers should appear similar to the following example below:

Host name: cr800114-a
IP address: xx.xxx.xxx.xx
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: xx.xxx.xxx.x
Broadcast: xx.xxx.xxx.255
Network: xx.xxx.xxx.1

Sub domain name: etob1.on.wave.home.com

DNS server 1: 24.2.9.46
DNS server 1: 24.2.9.48

Mandrake Linux 7.1 does not address Broadcast and Network fields in
DrakConf-->Network Configuration.
So, you will have to edit a two or three files manually.

[newbie] printing from kedit

2000-10-21 Thread Jeff Malka

When I try printing something from kedit it always seems to print in the same
standard font size (12) . This happens even if I change the fontsize of the
document.

How do I get it to print in a more compressed format?

The print command used by my kedit is "enscript -2rG". What do I need to
change it to print in say fontsize 8?

Thanks.

Actually Paul, your statement is incorrect. The people that originally
wrote down everything that was "later" canonized as "the bible" new from
the words they were writing that the earth was indeed round. It was the
clerics of the dark, and middle ages who lacked the proper spiritual

Re: [newbie] Windows 98 Defrag and Linux Partitions

2000-10-21 Thread DataChannel

If defrag finds any errors during the scandisk-like mode of it (first 5%) it
wouldn't let me continue. I ran scandisk before running defrag and it
didn't do anything to my linux partition because I rebooted to linux to make
sure it still works and it worked after scandisk was run and there were no
errors in scandisk.

Defrag is supposed to only defragment files within the partition, why does
it go as far as wiping my linux partition and screwing up the partition
table to do it?

Even if I disable its check for errors and program optimizer, it ends up
destroying the linux partition when run.

What does defrag need to do to other partitions to get its job done on the
windows partition anyways and WHY?

Re: [newbie] Monitor problems

2000-10-21 Thread Tom Brinkman

On Fri, 20 Oct 2000, you wrote:
> Why is it better to leave a computer on 24/7?

I've seen most all the other replies. As was said, there's
pros and cons. I still believe if you turn your computer on every
day, you're just as well off to leave it on. My main reason is
Linux is usually set to run it's cron jobs at 4am. If you're
systems off, obviously these updates don't get done.
Power: most desktop systems use about 150 watts or less. This
drops a lot when the monitor goes into suspend. If heats a problem
when running 24/7, you've got hardware problems. Linux sends HLT
signals to the cpu when it's idle, basically turning it off. I run
a p3-450 overclocked to 608mhz, 24/7, no problems. I read sometime
ago that the difference in your electric bill to leave your computer
on 27/7 as opposed to on/off everyday is about $2 to $3 month at
most.
UPS: Contrary to what someone said, Wal*Mart is a great place
to buy an UPS. They sell the best brand, APC, at very competitive
prices. Sometime ago I bought an APC BackUPs 500 at wally world for
$123. The 500 is more than adequate for a desktop system and also
features the serial port connection to shutdown the OS and power off
the system in an extended power outage. An UPS is almost a
requisite for a Linux (file) system, but it also provides better
power protection for your hardware than even the best surge
protectors. It not only eliminate surges, it also boosts and cleans
the power during brownouts and power dips (like when your A/C starts
up). I'm not intending to plug Wal*Mart, but buying an UPS online
is expensive because they're heavy (ie, shipping costs). I do
strongly recommend using an UPS on any computer system, regardless
of what OS you use. Some of y'all might even find that problems you
have with Windoze are really caused by your electric company or
house wiring ;)

RE: [newbie] Flashing login-screen

Try alt-ctrl-+ and/or alt-ctrl-- (use the ones on the numeric keypad) and
see if you can change to a lower-resolution video mode for X. Then login
and reconfigure the high resolution mode for X. It could be the monitor
selection, too. I had a NEC XV17+, but selecting that one from the list
never worked. I ended up selecting a generic 1024x768.

Hope this helps.

Re: [newbie] VNC Problems

2000-10-21 Thread Brian K. Garel

Matt,

I've seen similar messages on my system...same config...

1) It just DOESN'T work from a web browser on whatever port you try...I
have long since given up
2) The VNC viewer is looking to find out what "virtual" pc to connect to
ie... xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1 (this is why I believe that from the web
browser it doesn't work because you also need to specify the port
unlike the windows version where you just need the port.)
3) I don't know the URL of the windows vncviewer client so I have put it
on my website http://www.garel.org/~brian/vncviewer.exe
After you have downloaded it try using it with the following syntax:
vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1 (or whatever virtual session is active)
The best way to find out what virtual session is active is by looking
at your processes and grep for vnc
4) From another Linux box however you should just be able to type
vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1 (or whatever)

Hope this covers it...
