Anathis is a private message. Do you have an AOL Instant

Anait sounds like you've got windows occupying the entire
10gb drive and that the DiskDrake partition resizer can't
resize (make it smaller so there is room on the hard drive to
create some Linux partitions) the windows partition for you.

If that's the case, and you just reinstalled windows anyway,
then reinstall it again, but make the windows partition 5
gigs instad of 10. Then when you go to install Linux there
will already be 5 gigs of free space where Linux can install
itself.

[newbie] Linuxconf not working

2000-11-22 Thread Brian P. Trotter

I am running Mandrake 7.2. From KDE, I keep trying to launch Linuxconf from
the Drakconf window, but when I click on it, I hear the hard drives spin up,
the icon goes gray for a second, but comes back, and nothing happens. I have
uninstalled the linuxconf-1.21r5-5mdk RPM and reinstalled it, but it still
does nothing.

Can anyone recommend some more courses of action to fix this problem?

Thank you,
Brian

[newbie] g++ compiler error

Hello. I wrote an elementary C++ program with vi and called it temp.cpp
After compiling with g++ temp.cpp I'm presented with the executable a.out

getting is

Any ideas?

Re: [newbie] Stupid printer question

2000-11-22 Thread Vic

yeah, and it just flashed this box
and did nothing after that.

I noticed that on linuxprinting.org
I had to get a couple of files off of
that site for the old HP Deskjet.

I think it works now, I just have to
lpd -Pqueue instead of just lpd.

I do not have the ink cart yet,
so I just have to judge by the
way the carriage is acting
that it is printing correctly,
at least it is trying.

I will let you know when I
actually get the ink cart in
if it is actually printing the
correct characters.

Thanx

Re: [newbie] StarOffice as user

2000-11-22 Thread Anthony

When you install Star Office, you need to append the setup command with /net.
So type this "./setup /net"

Then once you install it to /usr/local/whatever, as a user type "./setup" and
it'll install about 4 MB of files in your /home directory. Then you can use
Star Office as a user.

If you need clearer/better info, read the instruction manuel you can download
off of Sun's site. It's in the "Network Installation" section.

Re: [newbie] Cable Modems

2000-11-22 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

I can't get Optus@Home running with DrakConf either. The only solution was to
do pretty much the same thing as you have done. I run the line dhcpcd -d -n
-h hostname eth0 at the command line as root (it doesn't work as user). The
-d creates a small log file that can be used for troubleshooting (it doesn't
generate much output, so you won't be overwhelmed with data) and the -n
renews the connection if dhcpcd is already running. That way I can put the
line as a cron job to run every five minutes to prevent connection dropouts,
which occur from time to time on the Optus network. Also, put the line in
your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file so that you automatically connect at bootup.

Hi Ana, welcome to the wonderful world of Linux. We need more info. What version of
mandrake, how big a hard drive and did you choose the auto install or custom, expert,
just for starters. The Partition for linux will have to be linux native ext2 or

Well, why dont you tell them how to access this information. That is why this is the
newbie linux help. I won't tell them because you are the one that brought up the
issue. IF you want them to educate themselves you must first help them by at least
educating them to find this information. Yes, one is manual, but if you are an expert
you will tell them other ways of finding this information. Such as trying to lock the
screen as root... You can see which process isnt running *the name of it* and in the
terminal type the name of the process or program that isnt working that go and look
for information on that problem. Such as xserver says if you look in the help area
that you cant lock the screen as root but goes about telling you how to manually set
this, so you can lock the screen as root.

[newbie] Wanna see a Penguin puke?

2000-11-22 Thread Brandon Vanderberg

hehe I just learned something I thought I'd share and ask a question at the
same time.

When you hit CTRL+ESC you get the window manager (or whatever it's called -
process viewer). When you Hold down those same keys (in frustration because
for example, it didn't respond quick enough - being the very impatient person
you are) you get a million copies of the process viewer running at the same
time all viewing each other. If you do this, make sure you have that little
system monitor applet running so you can catch the fun. Alternatively, you
can put your ear next to your computer and listen to all the little baby
penguins in your hard drive scream and vomit at roughly the same time.

Ugg, had to reset. Happily, no harm was done. Good job Linus!

Question: I don't suppose there's a way I can limit the number times a
particular application or process will spawn at the same time, is there?

[newbie] upgrade question

2000-11-22 Thread Adrian Smith

ok, as i get ready to order some 7.2 disk another question comes to mind.
i've decided to go ahead with a fresh install.
i have the following partitions

/
/home
/usr
/var
/swap

of course i do not format /home -- but i do tell the install program to mount /home on
that partition right? *duh*

i do format / and /usr correct? then reinstall everything that i put on that is not
part of mandrake (and the theory is my settings are contained on /home so will still
be there) right?

it can't hurt to format /swap

but what about /var? i don't have any email or anything there that i need to keep, so
i could format that also right? but if i do have things there in the future that i
need to keep then i can just tell the install program to mount /var on that partition
and it will all be groovy, yes?

thanks much

I didn't find too much on the KDE website - www.themes.org has more info.
Some of the old themes are being re-written as KDE2 themes, and more are
showing up at themes.org. There is also a legacy theme importer utility under
Configuration->Other , but I haven't had much luck with that yet.

Shawnit sounds like the framebuffer resolution
specified in /etc/lilo.conf is bogus for
your system.  Boot into Linux with the
boot floppy you made during installation.  Sigb in as root and edit /etc/lilo.conf by changing any line that
  starts with:
  vga=
and replace whatever appears after the 'equals
  sign' with 'normal', like this:
  vga=normal
then save the file and at a command line
  type:
  lilo -v
after lilo is done re-writing itself then log out
  and reboot.
Your system should boot normally without
Aurora.  If you want to experiment
wuth getting Aurora to run during boot, change the current 3 digit code to another in the 'vga=' line in
  /etc/lilo.conf till one works
properly.  The below chart of framebuffer codes will help you in this process:
   Colors  640x480 800x600 1024x768
  1280x1024 1600x1200 +---+---++-+-    256  |  769

Ollysorry, I misread your original message and thought
that you said that you had a previous version of Linux active
on your computer. That was the 'other Linux system' to which
I was referring. However, instead you could use the rescue
capabilities of your installation CD (or tomsrtbt) to do the
same things I already suggested

RE: [newbie] StarOffice as user

2000-11-22 Thread Odysseas Kostas

Hey, was wondering if anyone could help me with starting StarOffice as a user rather
than root.

Starting simple I recently reinstalled Mandrake 7.0 onto my hard
drive. As root I installed StarOffice in /usr/local/office52 and
it works just fine. When I try and use StarOffice as another user,
however, I am unable. I tried to "repair installation" and I got
the error, "An error occurred while unpacking the file soffice.new.
There is probably not enough disk space" (which can't be right.)
I figured the problem is with user permissions and so I tried changing the user
permissions on a few folders and now when I click on staroffice the hard drive spins
for awhile and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Should I have installed
StarOffice in /opt instead as someone had advised me? My mistake is probably pretty
obvious to an experienced user, but I'm flummoxed. Ideas? Thanks.

[newbie] Installing on an ATA-100 system

2000-11-22 Thread Robert Fargher

The other night, I helped a buddy build a new system. It has an AMD 1 GHz

Creative Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1 (comes with a remote control for
the sound card!!) dual 7200 RPM IBM ATA-100 hard drives.

We could boot the kernel from the DVD drive but could not install Mandrake

[newbie] Creative Soundblaster live! Player 1024 troubles

Hi!

I've just done a fresh install (7.1) on a new computer with the Creative
Soundblaster Live! Player 1024 in it... when I try to configure it with
Sounddrake, it chooses "Creative Labs SB Live!" which is okay. It also plays
the sample when I press "test", but when I click on "okay", I get the following
error message: " sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp': no device found. Any
ideas how to fix it?

Hi Joel,
You might change your /etc/inittab
Look for the line:
id:5:initdefault
and change the 5 to a 3
You will then always boot into a non-gui environment, and will have to type
startx to get into the gui.
If you don't want to go that route, you can just try hitting ctrl+alt+F2 to
get to a terminal mode [ctrl+alt+F7 should get you back to your X
environment].

Through linuxconf, or a ...drake...utility of which I don't remember the
name, change the runlevel (bootmode) to 3. My prefered way:

su
vi /etc/inittab
/initdefault
i
change initdefault to 3
escape

I'd agree that giving the initial pre-Xmas boxed sets a miss is a good idea,
The seven disk set DOES sound like the one from Mandrake, The one from
MacMillian had 6 disks. How much was this and how much would you charge to
ship one to the states?
I don't at all agree with skidly chad, about the lack of quality with the
final release,

The TV is on right now, tuned to CNN, The sound is too low for me to hear
what it's saying but I keep hearing this chant with something to do with an
election. It keeps saying his name, over and
over..Chad, ...mumble, .mumble ..election
Chad ..mumble ..Chad
Is HE the one that messed up the elections down south?

In any case, 7.2 gpl final works well with me. I'd like to get the Mandrake
boxed set to get some of the comercial and extra items sold with this. The
big item for me would to have the IBM via-voice. This is probobly just a toy,
that would cause me to yank the headphones off and start typing again, due to
my impatience with the process of training a voice interface. Supposedly the
via-voice application is NOT included with the Macmillian copy, so this may
be the indicator on which version it is. I'd install the first two disk with
the gpl ones and go to the other disk to get the extras.

It's fairly straight forward.

Log in on your ISP.

Click on the Updates icon (or go to DrakConf).

Select Update List. It will download a list of ftp servers followed by a
list of available updates and the descriptions.

The default server seems to be the download.sourceforge.net site. I have
found it to be really slow, probably due to heavy activity. If you go to
'File', you can access 'Preferences'. From there, you can pull down the
list of available sites and pick an alternative. The ftp.tux.org site
was a lot faster. Keep in mind that the cups update is 6.6M, so you may
want to opt for an alternative site first.

To update, select the file you want and click on 'Do updates'. It goes
through the download and the update automatically.

Hope this helps.

Barry :-)

Hi Ronald et al,

Shawnit sounds like the framebuffer resolution
specified in /etc/lilo.conf is bogus for
your system.  Boot into Linux with the
boot floppy you made during installation.  Sigb in as root and edit /etc/lilo.conf by changing any line that
  starts with:
  vga=
and replace whatever appears after the 'equals
  sign' with 'normal', like this:
  vga=normal
then save the file and at a command line
  type:
  lilo -v
after lilo is done re-writing itself then log out
  and reboot.
Your system should boot normally without
Aurora.  If you want to experiment
wuth getting Aurora to run during boot, change the current 3 digit code to another in the 'vga=' line in
  /etc/lilo.conf till one works
properly.  The below chart of framebuffer codes will help you in this process:

I think Mandrake-KDE has outwindowed the windows interface. They've made
the menuing off the start button much more sensible without all the
Microsoft hardcoded bragging and advertising. It's really much better. I
find those other window managers mysterious (Enlightenment) or just plain
impossible (like the original FVWM thing.) And you can tweak it practically
any way you want, unlike windows.

Still using windows unfortunately. need to figure out how to configure Wine,
and spend some money on hard disks and more software. Why is it that the
linux crowd loves to program all kinds of graphics stuff but gets bored with
creating something basic like a word processor?

With "Different output modes" I mean the printing option "Output mode".
One can choose between "Photo", "Solid tones", "Line art", and "black

Re: [newbie] KDE2 solution

2000-11-22 Thread Marcia

Dear All, It did not even occur to me to switch to Enlightenment or
Icewm and maybe that will solve these napster -mp3 problems and possibly
I could get the Linux Hearts game working in there? Does anyone have any
ideas or suggestions about this?

Also, I plan to install the new Suse7 that I just got yesterday. I have
the linux M 7.2 installed on this machine however I would like to
possibly do a dual boot system with the Suse 7. What is the best way to
do this without causing problems with my 7.2?

Someone asked me if Suse has the complete Xserver. That I do not know
yet and I will let you know as soon as I find out.:)

Thanks for your help. Marcia

Mandrake was forced by Wal-Mart to get the boxed version of 7.2 out early
(under threat of not putting it on shelves at all until after the new
year). Wal-Mart had them by the cojones, and they did what just about
anyone interested in keeping them would do: cried uncle.

RE: [newbie] Boot Defaults

2000-11-22 Thread Dickman, Jeff

Joel,

You can open a terminal window, type init 3. This will shudown X and take
you to a text logon.

or

On the logon screen there is a button that says shutdown. When you click on
that, it should give you 4 options. One is Console mode. Select that and
click OK.

IMO the second way is the better way to do it.

That should do it.

Shawnit sounds like the framebuffer resolution specified
in /etc/lilo.conf is bogus for your system.  Boot into Linux
with the boot floppy you made during installation.  Sigb in
as root and edit /etc/lilo.conf by changing any line that
starts with:

vga=

and replace whatever appears after the 'equals sign' with
'normal', like this:

vga=normal

then save the file and at a command line type:

lilo -v

after lilo is done re-writing itself then log out and reboot.

Your system should boot normally without Aurora.  If you want
to experiment wuth getting Aurora to run during boot, change
the current 3 digit code to another in the 'vga=' line in
/etc/lilo.conf till one works properly.  The below chart of
framebuffer codes will help you in this process:

 Colors  640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
+---+---++-+-
   256  |  769 771  773  775   796

Hello

I have an Asus CUSL2 Motherboard with the New 815e Intel chipset. I am

printer

In HardDrake (im using 0.9.3) it has a list of other devices, and the list
is composed of 8 "Intel Corporation Unknown". In usb devices, nothing is
shown.

When I load win98 normal, i need to use the Asus Driver CD it install the
drivers for this problem, while in Winme, and Win2k i dont have to. Asus's
website does not have linux support for this motherboard. I also believe
that Linux cannot detect my USB printer (Brother HL-1240) because of this
unknown devices.

Does anyone know how to fix these problems

This problem has been pissing me off and i have reinstalled Mandrake 7.2 2-3
times for screwing around with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Suspends your X session and puts you at the prompt so you

When you're done w/ thatwill fire your X session back up

[newbie] Unable to install 7.2, suspected HD controller problem

2000-11-22 Thread Christian Blouin

Hi,

hardware is AMD thuderbird 850 /Asus A7V motherboard / 128 Mb SDRAM Seagate
barracuda 30Go ATA66 (Promise 66 controller)( 15 Go partition for WinME) /
Asus v7100 GeForce MX 32Mb / Panasonic R/RW 32X

Red Hat fails to install, which is no much surpise with my ATA66
controller. I got an install boot image from the Promise web site and it
installed fine. Unfortunately, the boot disk made by Linux does not boot my
machine and the one provided at Promise do not work for some reasons. So I
got Mandrake 7.2, that fully support ATA66.

Alas! The install loops at the "create filesystem" step (mind you, after
successfully detecting my hard drive) asking me if I have a SCSI controller
(or card?) and NOT taking no for answer. I have then to hit the infamous
reset button and move on to something else.

The UDMA-HOWTO does not work for me, Linux ignores my commands:

linux ide2=0X9800, ide3=0X9000,...
as well as it ignores
linux ide0=... ide1=...

Some suggested to downgrade to 33 instead of 66, which is fine with me, but
I don't know how to do this.

That was the background. I'd like to know if anyone have been through a
similar situation and how they solved it.

I just cannot believe that I can't run any Linux on my machine that I
bought especially for this.

Have a good day,

Christian

The standard KDE printing dialog is unfortunately made for LPD and it
does not offer any possibility for setting the resolution, because in
LPD there is no possibility to send options for individual printouts. So
the only possibility to set options for an individual printout is to
start xpp or qtcups, change the options and save them. Then the KDE app
would use them.

[newbie] (...) Sound card problem

I have a OPTI 82C924 and I have mdk7.2. the sndconfig of mdk7.2 it's too good
for my card so I used the one in mdk7.1 but keeps giving me the same error.
when I exit (yes, I listen to the sound) but then I exit and he says this:

MAD16 / Mozart: Invalid Midi port 0x0

and YES I LISTEN TO THE AU AND THE MIDI SAMPLES. but then a friend told me to
do this:

pnpdump
pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf

ok and the thing worked, I could listen to sounds, and I could boot and then
I turned him on again, I still could listen to sounds. But the problem is
when I reboot without making the reboot command... Like... "RESET" or "POWER"
(sometimes the electricity goes down here in my house, so...) then the in the
boot he failes to the 2 devices :\\ and I have to do the sndconfig and those
3 lines all over again and reboot. isn't there any way to record the
configuration? for saving me trouble every time I force reboot to make the 4
commands again and re-reboot...?

This is a hardware problem, particularly with a lot of older machines.
You've got APM enabled in the BIOS, and Mandrake is issuing a power off
after shutdown command, but the hardware is blinking back on and
starting the reboot process again. Either disable APM or twiddle with
the BIOS setting for it. Really old hardware wou;dn't shut off at all,
mot of the new stuff correctly powers down, but I've got a few machines
around here that do exactly what you describe. I just killed APM on
them.

Re: [newbie] No NUMBER lock? Solved

2000-11-22 Thread Jeff Malka

I discovered the problem is not the version of numlock but the file to invoke:

In Mandrake 7.1, the command to enter was "numlock".
In Mandrake 7.2 it is "/usr/X11R6/bin/enable_X11_numlock" (without the
quotes).

The 7.1 kde autostart folder is no longer functional. The new autostart
folder in 7.2 is ~/.kde/autostart.

The kde2 in Mandrake 7.2 overwrites the root window so that commands like
xsetroot no longer take effect.

etc., etc.

Is there somewhere where one can read the changes made so as not to waste
days trying to devine what Mandrake did here or there?

Thanks.

Re: [newbie] Pine doesn't send mail unless using the root account.

2000-11-22 Thread Mark Weaver

Ok...first check your Pine settings to make sure you're telling it where
to find "sendmail" which should be /usr/sbin/sendmail, then (su) and
become root and issue this command to "reset" the permissions on sendmail:

chmod 755 /usr/sbin/sendmail

That should take care of your sending problems. This cropped up on me once
some time back and I chased the little bugger for about an hour before I
realized what was going on. After I change-moded the sendmail binary
things straightened out again.

You may also want to check your .pinrc file and make sure that the path to
sendmail is correctly stated and defined. There are two entries in there
for sendmail. The first one should look like this:

smtp=server=/usr/sbin/sendmail

and the other one should look like this:

sendmail-path=/usr/lib/sendmail

These two statements should appear in this manner and in this order in
