Dear Rich, Yes it works with 3.3.6, I believe. Someone on this list just gave me some instructions upon how to install that as opposed to 4. I will probably consider that option eventually. Marcia

Marcia Fri, 24 Nov 2000 22:48:52 Since you already spent the money Marcia, and you do want the program, one option would be to reinstall and elect not to use version four...the expert install I know, gives you that choice... One word of caution from someone who did an all nighter with 7.2 saturday . As soon as the partitioning program reads your table and gives the panel to make the first change...Immediatly stick in a blank floppy and hit the save to floppy button...this will make a copy of the table that you can recover to, when the thing freezes. There is something bad wrong with it, as I have heard too many tales of woe..on this very listone is going on right now. In my case it would freeze and I would have to hit reset to boot back to the CD...at that time the partition table is GONE..work forward to the panel again and hit restore from floppy and you will be fine again. I never got past building an extended partition, nothing could be put in it? although I gave it many tries..thanks to the floppy.. I finally wound up using the wizard and it did OK but the partitions are where he wants them and not like I wanted them. I am so glad I did not have to reinstall M$.. if I didn't have that little backup, I would have likely went off the building...and that would not have worked either as I live in a one story 8-). [newbie] hdparm utility
Found an interesting article on hdparm. The article stresses extreme caution in using it. I recommend using hdparm -v /dev/hda (put in your IDE drive) to find your current settings. I was able to get the buffered disk reads up from 11.5 MB/sec to 13.7 MB/sec. Didn't think that would be much of an improvement, but application loads were noticeably quicker. Netscape downloads seem to have improved somewhat as well. Don't think I'll try and push it any further though. http://oreilly.linux.com/pub/a/linux/2000/06/29/hdparm.html Barry :-)

[newbie] 7.2 installs and "stuff"
I've installed 7.2 on two different boxes, now (developmental), and both installs took 3 HOURS! These boxes are probably minimum, P200mmx with 64M of ram and scsi 9 gig drives with 50x ATAPI cdroms. Three hours seems out of line for an install on a clean, formatted HD--at least to me. The longest 7.1 took was 70 minutes, or so--I was using scsi 4X cd's with those, though. Would a scsi CD make that much difference? So far, kde2 is definitely prettier than its predecessors, and a bit slower to load. Apps are somewhat slower to load too (ala Win98)--I guess that's the payment for the eye candy. Some stuff is not totally stable, imo. So far my crashes have only happened when I CLOSED an app, never while running one or while loading one. I get a consistent crash when I close the background manager if I choose a background from a source other than kde's default sourcefile, and I get the "app has crashed" window when I close any Gnome game that I'm running in kde. Minor annoyances, but I don't think I'll do any more 7.2 installs until the bugfixes come in the next month or so. CUPS was kind of a headache for me, but I've got it figured out now. In fact, I think I like it, now I've got the StarOffice printing sorted out. Like anything new it requires some getting used to. My one real complaint is the Konquerer network ran really slow copying from Windows machines to the 7.2 machines. I don't have a clue why, it was fine going from Linux box to Linux box. I installed the LinNeighborhood rpm and now both Linux and Windows files copy fast. Anyone know why this happened to me? Has it happened to anyone else, and if so, how did you fix it? Eryl

[newbie] problem with update
I recently updated to the latest versions of cups 1.1.4-5.1, modutils 2.3.20-1.1, and tsch 1.09.04-1.1 uding mandrake update and they still appear in the files-to-update window of mandrake update as if I have to do them again. When I update again it erors and says that the rpms are already installed. Is there something I have to do manually for the update program to recognise that these programs are already installed on my system? Nev Cobb

Re: [newbie] Grub/LILO--why?
Anyone with windows installed on the front partitions that are migrating over to mandrake will probably appreciate grup as it overcomes the 1024 cylinder limitation of lilo. A few weeks ago I went to onstall SuSE over my mandrake partitions. Since it uses lilo and my boot partition was outside the 1024 boundary I had so readjust some of my windows/data partitions before I could install. And that isn't as easy to do in SuSE as it is with mandrake using DiskDrake. I have since moved back to mandrake for a lot of similar reasons. Re: [newbie] word processors and my Applix review at last
wow - if you fall from that high horse you're on you might seriously injure yourself ! What does a user review of a product have to do with knowing how the platform works ? Only an "expert" is allowed an opinion? If you tell someone you like a movie, it has nice special effects but the acting sucks, should you keep quiet unless you are a trained actor and special effects wizard ? Anyone can discuss how they like or don't like a product - if they want to post their opinions on their own website, go for it. Either disagree with the review or agree - how you can make comments like that about someone's product review is beyond me. Use your Linux Mandrake 7.2 install CD in rescue mode to gain access to both fdisk and your partition. The 't' command of fdisk will change a partition's system id. From what you've been saying you probably need to change it back from whatever it is now (probably a type '83' or a type '85') to a type 'b'. Check out the 'l' command to decide what to change it to. -- Alan

howdy -- my comments are mixed in below with yours... you said: I have a backup of my bootsector, I think i created that with norton, but when i boot from that it also asks for the location of command.com, and i've tried first booting from win98 bootdisc, and then using the 'backup of bootsector' disc, but it doesn't find any files on the disc... me sayz: hmmm, that's odd now that i think about it if you boot from a win98 disk, shouldn't command.com be on that disk? it's been so long since i have booted win from a floppy. but that seems really strange. do you have a norton rescue disk? that should have partition info on it which could be restored. you said: I think i'll try to boot from my lnx-mdk 7.1 install disc, and look at discdrake again, although i'm pretty sure that when i entered that window, the whole graphical display of the hard-drive was filled with the recommended sizes of /, swap and /home (together filling the hard-drive) but i doubt wether this will help at all, as i don't recall any diagnostic or repair tools included there... me sayz: i don't know if there are diagnostic or repair tools there either didn't someone on the list write that they used linux fdisk to look at their partitions and that "refreshed" the partition data & brought it back? try that. i don't know much about linux fdisk yet, but i was looking at it the other day and i see that it will let you change the type of partition. if the former win partition still exist, perhapse you simply need to start fdisk and change that partition to fat32 but not format it or anything. maybe that would fix it?? i'm just theorizing here -- understand i have never done this. you said: I never actually answered 'yes' to any such action, infact the install system froze just as i was going to make that choice. me sayz: again, i theorize, but this would lead me to hope that your information is still on the drive, just the partition table is lost. you said: So in effect i think it shouldn't have but it did somehow totally change the information ABOUT the partitions (which i gather is in the partition table), not the partitions themselves. (this i think is exemplified by the fact that running fdisk told me that the windows partition is a non-DOS partition, but that it does exist, and obviously has the same dimensions as i had left it with.) me sayz: yes, the partition table records what the partition type is & where it ends & begins, at least that is my understanding. you said: Are there perhaps any tools which i can use to just tell the computer that my windows partition is infact a FAT32 partition, just by editing the partition table) - this excluding fdisk, as i had no luck there... me sayz: probably, tho i don't know what they might be. =( partition magic might be able to do it (i don't have PM, but hear very good things about it) i'm sorry i can't tell you anything that will save you here, just tossing a bunch of theorys at you. =) i've been lucky & never had to recover from something like this, so i have no first hand experience. i still kinda think using linux fdisk to "tell" the computer that partition is a fat32 system might work. is this what you tried? i also wonder about using windows fdisk with the switch to repair the master boot record. maybe that would convince it that you have a fat32 drive? this last suggestion is a big big big SWAG (scientific wild ass guess). please don't try that unless you are really brave or unless someone smarter than me thinks it might work. =) i hope your problem works out... i am leaving soon & will not be back to the list until monday. i hope to see a post from you telling us how you fixed it. =) --- > hi creaktop > > i'm still a linux newbie, but fairly experienced with windows > > umm... it sounds to me like you have blown away your windows > partitions. > i've never used the "install to free space on Windows" and i'm not sure > exactly what that does. is Linux installed on your computer and > actually working? you said you had 7.1 on the box before. if so, try running > diskdrake as this will give an easy to understand graphic view of what the > partitons on your drive(s) look like. linux is red, free space is > white, fat is blue i think. if it doesn't show any fat drives, then you > may have totally killed it. > > do you have any backups of your partition tables? diskdrake will allow > you to do that -- tho i have never used that function so i couldn't say > how well it works. > > ummm i use norton disk doctor also if that doesn't see any > drives to work on then, i would say you partition table is damanged or > changed... at any point before your crash & burn did you answer 'yes' > to anything asking you if you were sure you wanted to write a partition > table or format a dr
Re: [newbie] Grub/LILO--why?
I prefer grub for a few small reasons - you can make changes on the fly and try them out without having to remember to run lilo to effect your changes, and to make the changes permanent you simply edit the menu file- again, as soon as you save your changes, thats it - nothing else to execute. I have heard that the newer lilo versions are more graphical and friendlier, but I'm sticking with grub. I don't think the differences bewteen lilo and grub are not that great - more just a matter of slight preferences. philomena On Saturday 25 November 2000 12:03 am, you wrote: > I am presently running another distro than mdk, so I'm not > familiar with grub. i have the above card in my box, under lm7 and 7.1 it worked fine but now i've installed 7.2 i cannot get get the card to initialise, i have not changed the cards internal settings (full duplex non pnp) i have entered the io and irq in the linuxconf>networking>network devices section but when i run ifup eth0 or when the machine boots the error message 'delaying eth0 initialisation' comes up, i'm sure the card is fine and i have just missed out a simple step, but lms 7 and 7.1 were so simple hardware wise that i'm not aware of what else i should be looking at, what are the services needed to get the card working (as opposed to actual network service like nfs etc.) bascule

hi, well, 7.1 is installed, but not working. So i can only run discdrake from the install menu of either 7.1 or 7.2... I have a backup of my bootsector, I think i created that with norton, but when i boot from that it also asks for the location of command.com, and i've tried first booting from win98 bootdisc, and then using the 'backup of bootsector' disc, but it doesn't find any files on the disc... Marcia: When you attempt the installation with rpm, the rpm will tell you that certain 'dependencies' are not fulfilled. It will tell you which files you need (by name). You can search your Mandrake CD for them, and if you don't find them, you can search the web using keywords rpm and . I almost always find the files I need this way. i can't say much about the printer problem, mine doesn't work either =) as to the sound i think you have to use sndconfig. i don't think there is any other way. also make sure your window manager isn't involved. i have seen some situations on this list where it was simply that the volume was turnned down in KDE and in my case, i use Enlightenment, and i had no sound until i ran esd. so run sndconfig -- and they say you should not do it under X and i think you have to be root. i don't remember now as i did mine so long ago =) hope that helps Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] >>> Jay <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 3:09:35 PM 11/24/00 >>> I have two problems that need addressing. [newbie] XFree86 hangs during hardware probe
I previously used Mandrake 6.0 with no problems. I configured my Rage LT Pro card as a Mach64 with no clock settings. Now, after attempting to install 7.2, my system hangs when the machine attempts to start X. It doesn't actually start the server, and I get a plain, black, empty screen. I must cold boot. I have tried the following: reinstall my backup config file. Boot to text mode and startx to start the X server. Reinstall Mandrake 6.0 (which now hangs in the same place!) X -probeonly causes the hang to occur, so I assume that it happens during the probe. What is going on? What can I do? Rich Chase

[newbie] AIR-i486 or??
Hello, anybody there, As a real, real newbie I did'nt want to "mess up" my winblows system since I spend quit al lot of hours to have it configured as it is now, readily fast and quite reliable. So I downloaded the 486-image to try out on my older system, which is : proc : Intel 486DX2-66 mb : VL-bus mem : 24 Mb ram HD : IDE 1.7 Mb Quantum Fireball vc : Trident 9400cxi CD-rom : IDE Creativ CD4834E standard SVGA, capable at least 800*640*32k standard serial mouse PROBLEMS! The grafic installation kept always stuck at "no scsi drives found" with no other buttons then "OK". With an install disk, as mentioned on the CD, i managed to install everything upto "xconfiguration" where the system hangs. Restarting with the (by that time already made) boot disk, I could'nt log on as root, only as user. After about 15 tries, with different hard disks, other video-cards, I finally gave up. Then I could use a system from a friend for a time, and I retried. This system was a Intel PI-133, PCI-bus, S3-Trio64 and I placed my Quantum HD. First attempt to install was successful. What's the problem with my 486 system??? Afterall, the iso-file I downloaded intended to be written for a 486 system or not? I really like to reuse it. Can someone help me out? [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [newbie] partition info destruction
Believe it or not but I've had this happen three times to me but I could not repeat the circumstances in which it occurred. I acted hastily twice and lost all my data however the 3rd time I went straight to Fdisk as you did tried to create a partition and it said that there already was a partition whereas the boot disk came up with the same answer as it did in your occasion. It seamed that going through the process of the fdisk seemed to be enough to refresh whatever holds the partition mapping and all boot well when I backed out of it. I was using win98 and trying to install Md at the time, but not into the windows partition. It hasen't happened since either. Since then I've always maintained a separate data partition in Fat32 that windows and Mandrake can share. Ie found it to be a good safety net when you are playing with multiple operating systems. And as the other response said, I aslway choose the Mandrake install option where I can use DiskDrake to visually see what it has done or chosen to do. > Under my laptop, owning a Celeron 500 mhz, Mandrake 7.2 says it's got a > PIII Copermine... what's wrong?? 8-? Your Celeron 500 is probably a CeleronII. This is the successor of the CeleronA and it's based on the .18µ Coppermine core of the PIII. Only the cache and the L2 associativity have been altered, and it runs on a slower Front Side Bus speed. Linux Mandrake is correct in telling you that you have a PIII ;-) BUT, the CeleronII's performance is WAY of that of a regular PIII due to the mentioned L2 cache associativity... cat /proc/cpuinfo should tell you more.

Hi Phil I have been playing with my sendmail some more and have figured out a way to get it to send mail out via pop account. unfortunely I have to put in every domain I wish to e-mail there. Its the /etc/mail/relay_allow file. Is there anyway I can have myself and the users allowed to e-mail out to where ever without someone using my machine as a relay station for spam!! P.s. the funny thing is whatever I put in th relay_allow file does not show up anywhere in the webmin system even after restarting the sendmail system. Regards Mike Freeman Embrace the Penguin. Re: [newbie] LM7.2 -- Switchdesk -- where is it?
It's been eliminated. One alternative is as follows: Set SysV to usermode 5. This boots directly to X using kdm and allows you to select your GUI at login. When you logout from the GUI you are returned to the kdm screen, from which you can login to another GUI. If you are uncomfortable booting directly to X, you can get a console when you get the kdm login screen by using Ctrl-Alt-F2. (From a console, use Alt-F7 [rather than startx] to get back to an X login.) Paul On 23 Nov 2000, at 3:22, Benjamin Sher wrote: > Dear friends: > > I am embarrassed to ask. [newbie] core backtraces don't help debug?
Hey, When I attempt to get backtraces from gdb (either from bug-buddy or manually from a core file) they often times do not contain *any* useful information. I can provide an example if it becomes necessary (I don't have one handy at this time). Suffice to say that what a bt reports is only signal information, and not enough to do any sufficent debugging. Is this because the program was compiled without debugging symbols? Much of my software is installed from RPM or src.rpm files -- maybe these have debugging symbols turned off by default? Re: [newbie] HD Partition question
hi Jacqueline; how comfortable are you with messing with your computer? i can tell you one way to do this, tho there might be easer ways. 1st -- have you backed up your windows system (or have the CDs to reinstall) on the off chance you kill windows? =) but yes, you can put linux on your E drive, leave win on your C & duel boot, not a problem. i would use the expert install. when it gets to the point where you have to select the partitions to mount the file system it will open diskdrake which will show your drive and you will see 2 fat partitions. select the "E" partition (make darn sure you select the right one -- look at the size of each one) then you can change the type of drive -- it will be fat32, you want to change it to ext2 -- then you can format that drive -- then you can tell the install program to mount your file system there. from diskdrake you can also break that partition into smaller partitions if you want to mount linux on seperate partitions. diskdrake is pretty straight forward (i figured it out) just be sure you read everything carefully before you click on anything =) i hope this makes sense & helps you out Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] >>> "Jacqueline Michell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 12:32:27 PM 11/24/00 >>> I*m very sorry if this is a dumb question. I bought Linux-Mandrake 7.2 (powerpack deluxe) and need some advice on partitions before I install. I have no experience with Linux and find the installation manual unclear on this point. I have also searched the newbie archives. My 15G HD now has two partitions: 7.14G (C:) Windows and Windows applications that are already installed--AND--7.13G (E:) reserved for Linux--not yet installed. (I need to be able to dual-boot to either Windows or Linux.) My questions: 1. Is there a way to insure that Linux is installed on the E:\drive? If so, is this choice made in the Recommended, Customized, or Expert class of installation? 2. Or---do I need to remove the E: partition and let Linux make it*s own partitions? You are always asked where you want Linux installed. The first partition will be /dev/hda1, the C: drive. Do Not Use That. At a certain moment the installation program will ask you if it should use its own intelligence to assign diskspace, or if you want to do it yourself. Do it yourself. Do not go for Fdisk when asked, use diskdrake. The FAT partition(s) will be marked in a certain color. When you click a partition, the screen will tell you what the program has detected there. You can then select the second partition, where you want Linux, tell the installer that you want to use that. >2. Or---do I need to remove the E: partition and let Linux make its own >partitions? If so, can one make sure that both OS have about equal HD >space? This would make things a bit easier, then you do not have to meddle with the installer to clear the partition first. Then you can make the partitions for linux (swap, /home, /usr and /) directly. Re: [newbie] SBLive! and MIDI
First you might want to check the levels by running xmixer from root. As a last ditch attempt to get it up, try this command line from root # modprobe sb io=0x220 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330 irq=5 This loads the SoundBlaster module and all the modules that go with it. If you see a warning about the sound module already being loaded, you can safely ignore it. If however, you see an error message about the interrupt number in use the command cat/proc/interrupts to examine the interrupts being used on your Linux system and check the documentation for your sound card. Then try the above command again with a appropriate parameters. Most Unix/Linux systems keep their time using Univeral Time or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), but Microsoft systems keep their time as local time. When you set the time in either system, you set the CPU clock to that version of time. Then when you boot the other system, it interprets what is in the CPU clock differently and reports a different time. The fix: Run timeconf as root The Configure Timezones dialog box appears. Set your system clock to GMT by selecting the Hardware Clock Set to GMT option at the top of the screen. Then Deselect the Hardware Clock Set to GMT option Close timeconf Finally reset the time to the proper value using the date command after you reboot. Good luck! Very unfortunate decision to try to upgrade or install system files, _especially libraries and headers_, using --force or --nodeps. RH 7 is broken and buggy because they tried to make the jump from the 2.95 libraries to 2.96. Now you've done the same to your Mandrake 7.2 system. Benjamin, I know you're an experienced user, the situation with 2.96 (which is still unstable in today's cooker) is also easily obtainable information. -- Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay
[newbie] Grub/LILO
Ok, here today's question. I recently upgraded my winblows OS and it overrode my grub. I used the rescue disk and I can get into Linux now. It is however, using LILO to boot. How can I get it back to grub? Thank you in advance. Chris Kelly Registered Linux user 185775

I just want to make my wine work with > Office97 While you can use wine to start Office 97, it's almost certain it will be entirely unusable. The best source of info for setting up and using wine is the wine-howto, paying particular attention to wine.conf example configuration. Your wine.conf must accurately reflect the location (ie, hda1) of your Windoze and other drives/partitions. That is really the only thing that needs to be done to use wine. Windoze does not need to be installed, but then the Win-app and all it's dependencies (.dll, .vdx, .ini, etc) must be. It's prob'ly obvious that this approach is very difficult. For the most part, few if any Windoze apps will run satisfactorily with wine. One notable exception is Forte's Agent (mail/news). If a Linux user must maintain the ability to use windoze apps, the best option is to dual boot, followed by a solution like VMware ($$) or Plex86 (free), and as a last resort wine. While this is just my opinion, I believe I'm safe in saying it's a widely held one. -- Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay
[newbie] Urgent! Switchdesk -- Trapped in Gnome!
Dear Xaos and friends: Using LM7.2: I cannot begin to tell you how frustrated and bewildered I am by the absence of the old "switchdesk" application in LM7.2. I dowloaded the Red Hat 7.0 switchdesk files as follows: switchdesk-3.6-1.i386.rpm switchdesk-gnome-3.6-1.i386.rpm switchdesk-kde-3.6-1.i386.rpm There was a problem in installing the "switchdesk-kde" file. It demanded a certain file. Here is the data: [root@localhost sher]# rpm -Uvh switchdesk-kde-3.6-1.i386.rpm error: failed dependencies: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 is needed by switchdesk-kde-3.6-1 [root@localhost sher]# So I did a search for this file using Google (in Gnome/Netscape). I found it listed under "libstdc++-2.96-54.i386.rpm". When I tried to install this file, I got a message that this installing this file needed another file. I managed to install it anyway using the rpm -Uvh --nodeps. I then typed "switchdesk" in KDE'xterm. I logged out of KDE and typed "startx" in the console. This brought me right into Gnome. Everything seemed fine. I was just exploring to see if Gnome was installed properly. After a minute or so in Gnome, I decided to get back to KDE 2.0 Final. Well, this is where the problems began. I typed "switchdesk" in Gnome's xterm. It showed me all my options including KDE 2.0, WindowMaker, etc. I selected KDE 2.0, closed all applications and logged out to the console. In the console I typed "startx" hoping to be brought back to KDE 2.0. No chance! No matter what I do, I am STUCK FOREVER in Gnome. I even reinstalled my LM7.2 using "custom, update". When I booted up, it once again insisted on booting up to Gnome, which is where I am right now. Can someone please help me get back to KDE 2.0, and please be specific with your suggestions. I have wasted hours on this and I can't for the life of me figure out why Mandrake had dropped "switchdesk" and left us in the lurch. Or have I missed something? I did check out rpmfind.net but found no Mandrake "switchdesk" files for the current 7.2 release. The old "switchdesk" files (LM 7.1) do NOT work in Lm 7.2. Would very much appreciate your help. Re: [newbie] Enlightenment pager problem
As far as I know, in Enlightenment, all you have to do is right click on what every little border you get with "no border" and it should give you a menu. At the very bottom of that menu it should have the option of "Borders." If you click there, another sub menu will open up and it gives you the options of the different kinds of borders available to you. There are actually two different borderd "made" just for the pager and are denoted as such in their name. I'm pretty sure that works for both Mandrake 7.1, and 7.2. tdh T. I had Mandrake 7.2 installed on two different machines..same motherboards but different BIOS revision dates. The one with the newer BIOS date worked fine...the one with the older exhibited exactly the same symptoms as you outline. Updating the BIOS to the newer version cured the problem on the malfunctioning PC. BTW...the machine that experienced the proble also exhibited the same behavior with another distro with specs similar to MDK 7.2 Paul
Re: [newbie] mandrake 7.2: installation from iso's problem... PLEASE HELP!
You say you burned the ISOs, did you make your cd's by burning the disk image or just copy the downloaded file, I ask because the first time I made the inst. and ext. cd's I just copied the file and could get nothing to work. See the cd burning help on the Linux-Mandrake ftp server site if the above is the case. If it is not, please don't be offended if I was preaching to the choir. I am not only a real newbie, but have limited computer training. (Self taught) I had Fortran IV some years back, well back before dirt was invented.
