Hi Marcia, When you say your computer had(has) LinuxM7.2 I'm assuming you mean Linux Mandrake 7.2, right? And then you also have Suse 7... ok, now I have never tried Suse, and I'm pretty new to Mandrake, but why do you need both? I would just pick one and concentrate on getting that one working right, but if you do want to keep both I think you should be able to do that depending on how you partition the drive. And if you wanted to get rid of one you might think about how you want to partition that old space, so either way it sounds like you should look at your partition tables using something like DiskDrake. Notice how the diald "name" and "remotename" equals client and server columns, respectively, in pap-secrects. Also: /bin/echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr to allow diald to resend the ip packet that triggered ppp coming up. Plus: echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward to allow ip forwarding. Diald works fine for dial-on-demand. I have used it sucessfully for years. I always had my masquerading rules implemented when the system booted. All the computers talk to each other and everything with the local lan works fine (so far). I run into problems when i try to use DialD to perform the on demand dialing though. Currently i can log in from any of the computers and use '/sbin/ifup ppp0' to start my ppp link to my ISP and then everything works fine with masquerading, etc. I cannot get diald setup to detect when one of the computers calls for a connection to the ISP though. I know there is something with diald that requires it to be setup with a series of ipchains so that the computers are not masq'd to begin with so diald can get the message that it needs to call the ISP and then it starts the ipchains rules for masq'ing. I havent gotten this part figured out and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could offer any advice on this. One other thing that i am having some problems with is the usage of pppd in the examples i have managed to find for setting up diald so far. I have yet to be able to get pppd to connect to my ISP and have always used the '/sbin/ifup ppp0' line i mentioned above with no problems. I am sure this is something that i am probably overlooking but have no idea what exactly it is. If anyone knows of an alternative for diald that is easier to setup and use or can give me some fairly simple instructions for setting up diald i would greatly appreciate hearing it. [newbie] re:vmware and Xfree86v.4
Marcia, It is fairly straitforward to install. Vmware has the manual posted at it's site. Once you install Vmware you will need to run the vmware-config.pl as root to set up the virtual machine for your computer. It will lead you step by step through the proccess. I think you can safely answer yes to most of the configuration questions and it will need to compile some modules. Then you need to install the guest operating system. I could not get the biderectional printing to work but when I Turned that off in the guest operating system it printed, just slowly. Hopefully this helps, Pat

Re: [newbie] Printcap
Connect the printer to the 7.2 box and install it with printerdrake or kups as a local printer (see http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hcups2.html). Check whether you have set the options (paper size, resolution, ...) correctly so that you can print from the 7.2 machine. To make the printers accessible from a client which only runs LPD (your 5.3 machine), set up the CUPS-LPD mini daemon which emulates LPD on your server (see http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hcups4.html#lpdcl). On the client (5.3 machine) you do now the same as you did if the server was a LPD machine. The printer names of the emulated LPD are exactly the same as of CUPS. So if you have given the same name to your printer on the 7.2 system as it had before you installed 7.2, you do not need to change anything in the /etc/printcap of your 5.3 client. Yes, the FA310TX will work fine, but the FA311TX and FA312TX are toast, as no drivers work for them. I went to www.skyld.com site and followed the instructions to compile natsemi.c, but got 20 pages of errors. I do know enough to know that there must be someting very basic wrong if you get 20 pages of errors, but don't have a clue what. I imagine the directions make assumptions about what I have installed or something that I (being a linux newbie) wouldn't be aware of. I sent an email to Netgear asking for help and got no response. Re: [newbie] Modem's busy
Dear All, I installed Suse 7 a couple of days ago and it was sharing my computer with LinuxM7.2.Something I did in there made it impossible to boot back into Linux7.2. I had to reinstall Linux 7.2 Also, I made the mistake of trying to setup my internet in Suse and I think it stole my serial port or i/o or whatever because now I cannot get on the net with Linux7.2. I was on the net without a problem before with Linux 7.2. I have set up everything I can however it says my modem is busy and that there is no card found even though I have it set up as it was before in the /etc/modules.conf file and with linux conference. One benefit I got though is now my Mp'3 play great in LinuxM7.2 and they did not before. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am thinking of removing Suse and hopefully that will get my internet up in Linux7.2 again. What would be the best way to do this? [newbie] Ethernet Adapter not found
My computer is a compaq deskpro with a built in PCI NIC (PCNET PCI AMD) with a pentium 120Mhz I use my NIC to connect to my ADSL ISP. It worked ok with W98. I totally erased the HD to install a Mandrake 7.2. The hardware detection seemed to be ok, my NIC is recognised as an "AMD LANCE and PCnet". But when I use the ADSL wizard, it ends with a message "Not ethernet adpater". Has anyone a clue?

[newbie] set -o vi for bash?
Hi: I am using Mandrake 7.1 on a Thinkpad 770 ED for the first time with KDE. My previous relelase was Red Hat 5.2 and fvwm95 as the window manager. I am not new to Linux, but I am new to this release and KDE, and I haven't been able to get my beloved "set -o vi" to work in any of the terminals in KDE. I have placed the command on the command line as well as in the .bashrc to no avail. Each time I enter the "ESC -" key sequence nothing happens. Can someone out there provide me with some suggestions for fixing this problem? I really really need this feature, because I am lazy and bad typist, and I truly hate having to use the mouse for repeating commands... Thanks! Maureen

Okay, with HD prices so low, I bought a 2nd (20 gig) Seagate hard drive. I added it to my current system, and decided to make a dual-boot system, using my old 10 gig WDC as the boot HD, for DOS stuff, and the new 20 gigger for my precious Linux stuff. I'm not going to go into a huge lengthy narrative here, but it works, except that with DOS 6.2, I get 2 gigs out of 10 available on my 1st hard drive. I know that if I installed Windblows, I'd get the full benefit of the drives space, but I refuse to have it on my system. Note that I'd also much prefer to have DR-DOS on my first drive, if anyone out there has experience with it (and pointers for getting/installing it?) I found some stuff on Caldera's web site, but its all bigger than the 2 gigs I've got on my 1st HD. Any idea on how to get the other 8 gigs from DOS 6.2, until I can get DR-DOS installed? [newbie] Re: HD partition question
Many thanks to those who replied to my questions. L-M 7.2 is now installed leaving the Windows section of my HD still there : ) Just a couple of details: There is no way to turn off the PnP OS in the (updated) Bios of my Dell Dimension XPS M166s but Linux installed anyway. Thanks to Jaguar (March 2000 archives) for solving my problem with endless "lost interrupts" due to the zip drive. I may have to always boot with a disk in the zip drive unless there is a way around that. Also, using KDE2, the clock is running in military time (24 hour). So far, I haven't found if I can change that. -Original Message-From: Jacqueline Michell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Date: Friday, November 24, 2000 2:26 PMSubject: [newbie] HD Partition question I’m very sorry if this is a dumb question. My 15G HD now has two partitions: 7.14G (C:) Windows and Windows applications that are already installed--AND--7.13G (E:) reserved for Linux--not yet installed. (I need to be able to dual-boot to either Windows or Linux.) My questions: 1. Is there a way to insure that Linux is installed on the E:\drive? If so, is this choice made in the Recommended, Customized, or Expert class of installation? 2. Or---do I need to remove the E: partition and let Linux make it’s own partitions? [newbie] hd.img won't boot
I have ordered the CDs so this may all be moot tomorrow, but I was impatient... While I was away for the holiday, I set my box off to download the entire linux-mandrake installer (yes, the whole gigabyte of stuff via FTP - and it worked!). Following the instructions in ../i586/INSTALL.txt I created a boot floppy from the image at ../i586/images/hd.img. The problem is this floppy will not boot. When I try to boot the floppy, the console displays: SYSLINUX 1.48 MDK-Cooker Copyright (C) 1994-1999 H. Peter Anvin And then, just hangs there. I've tried recreating the floppy a couple of times with different, new floppies (dd if=hd.img of=/dev/fd0), but same results each time. Any clues what I'm doing wrong?

I have primary 207.217.77.82 and secondary 207.217.120.83 entered in Kppp. Those numbers are different than the ones EL gave me, and they told me that their DNS numbers vary depending on the number you dial into. You should'nt have to touch the rest of the entrys in the list unless they are all in differant directorys -- Phil Connor Emory Booty Co. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registered Linux User # 189889
[newbie] EMU10K1 troubles
When I run sndconfig as root from a command line, this is what happens: First, it tells me about the existing config file being renamed, then detects the sound card as SB LIVE!. When I tell it to continue, it attempts to play a sample and this appears: /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: init_module device or resource busy /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: insmod sound-slot- 0-0 failed then it tries for manual config, and repeats the above upon trying to play a sample. However, I have system sounds (sound is on in startup services). I can play MIDI's through the external interface fine, but none of the four internal midi synths work. KMIX shows a tab for Creative SBLIVE but says "invalid mixer Creative SBLive!". The midi player shows all internal devices as Emu 10k1 wavetable Emu10k1 port 0(1,2,3,) - ALSA Device, and the external midi as External Midi 0 Midi 0-0 - ALSA Device. There is no sound from the internal wavetable at all, although the player is "playing" the file. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I have been trying to get this card to work through numerous Distros of various flovors of Linus for over a year now. I have tried the OSS drivers, and still no internal wavetable. Is it possible that the card is not loading a patch set? If so, wher do I put the SF2 files, and how do I load them at boot? Thanks in advance for any help. John Payne
[newbie] IPCHAINS/MASQ/ROUTING Help!
OK, I setup my linux box using the "Home-Network-Howto" and everything is working great using ipchains and ipmasq. I'm using 2 nic cards, one with a public addy and one with a private addy. What I need to do is pass several of my public ip's thru the linux box to servers on my private network. The servers have to have the public ip assigned to them. Thanks, Mel

[newbie] help with diald and/or alternatives
I have a small lan setup currently (5 computers, 4 running windows 98 and 1 running Mandrake 7.1) and I have been trying to set them all up to use some form of on demand dialing to my local ISP. Re: [newbie] 7.2 says i've got a PIII ?!
> Last question. Do i have to compile the kernel for 586 or 686 then? I assume > 686, isn't it? ;-) If I recall correctly, Mandrake supplies a patched kernel of the plain vanilla 2.2.17 kernel. It is optimised for i586 architectures, which means that any CPU ranging from a P60 to a P233MMX will benifit from it. The K6-family from AMD will also get a small speed increase. But, since CPU's are backward compatible, i686 CPU's, like the PII(I), CeleronI(I) and Athlon will work on it. You could recompile your kernel, but you won't feel much of a speed increase. To get real optimisations for your system, you would have to recompile EVERY program again from the source files for i686. Mandrake already does this for i586 systems, that's why their distro's won't work on 486's or anything lower. So you better leave your kernel as it is right now, and wait for a more mature version of the 2.4 kernel (although 2.4.0-test11 is sufficient for home use). Optimising your kernel for i686 will have limited effect on the speed of your system.

Re: [newbie] Apache dependencies
If you run helix gnome this file will automaticlly be added and kept updated by helix update. If you are a Gnome user anyway then this might be an easier option (assuming you have enough bandwidth to suck in the needed files). *^*^*^* Have the courage to take your own thoughts seriously, for they will shape you. -- Albert Einstein On Sat, 25 Nov 2000, Mark Weaver wrote: > Roger, > > go to http://rpmfind.net and put the name of that library file in the > search box.
