Here's a quick rule of thumb, don't install every
package, especially ones that you don't know or
specifically need, you could be creating security
holes.

Go look around for security documents, it'll show you
things that you need and don't need. Also,
mandrake7.1 (and 7.2) has a security level feature in
in drakconf, set it to maximum.

Speaking of chipsets, the cheapest external modems seem to be those with
Rockwell chipsets, at least here in New Zealand. I'm not too sure what the
story is with this - it seems from what I've found on the web that the older

RE: [newbie] Internet access through MS proxy server

2000-12-14 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

You mentioned that your MS Proxy was running Socks.

Are routing services turned off? Could you route to the Linux box?

I.E. Find some way to give Linux direct access to the internet by utilizing
routing...

If the NT machine only provides access via socks your might be SOL. I'm
unaware of a viable socks client for Linux...

Re:DNS

Socks clients will normally rely on the Socks host to handle resolution
requests, either directly or by forwarding them on up to a full DNS. It's no
surprize that Linux cannot resolve since it is not able to talk to the Socks
host.

Logging in via Samba is not going to help you with this if the system is
hamstrung by Socks.

Agreeably so, but at the moment I am forced to go through the NT machine. I
got samba up and running without a hitch, in fact my boss was amazed that in
37 minutes I had done a complete install of MD7.2, had it up on the network

Another small bit of info is that the Linux box does not resolve names or
get an active ping outside of the network.

RE: [newbie] mounting cdrom problems

2000-12-14 Thread Helsby, James

Any mount entry in the /etc/fstab file, can be automatically mounted, by
calling mount to the mount point.

Ie, you have a nfs mount set up, that isn't currently mounted. Call the
mount point "mount /mnt/nfs_mount" and it will mount. Provided it is in the
fstab file.

I guess everybody's entitled to their opinion, but to put down the hard work of the KDE

The configurability of the KDE interface is clearly deeper than you have cared to go; I

[newbie] kde cdrom icons and 'eject'

2000-12-14 Thread bascule

i have just upgrade to kde2.0.1 and i have found that the 'eject' options off
the right click menu for my cdrom desktop icons no longer work, mount and
unmount still work but the 'eject' option was really handy (mount will still
close the tray)

anyone else found this - got a fix?

[newbie] kdevelop 1.3 not working

2000-12-14 Thread Phil

Hello,

I have kdevelop-1.3-linux-i386 which is a precompiled version that uses a
shell script to start it. Kdevelop starts but fails to build any project
types.

During the create project phase I'm told that there is an error in
configure.in and that the qt 2.2.1 libraries have not been found (I have qt
2.2.2).

If I try to run the created project an error dialog says "makefile is not
found".

I suspect that the problem due to an incompatibility between the system used
to build the precompiled version and Mandrake 7.2, but I could be
wrong.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Re: [newbie] Internet access through MS proxy server

2000-12-14 Thread Jeremy Sudderth

Agreeably so, but at the moment I am forced to go through the NT machine. I
got samba up and running without a hitch, in fact my boss was amazed that in
37 minutes I had done a complete install of MD7.2, had it up on the network
and printing through the NT server. Now if I could just get it on the net
they would be sold on Linux forever.

Another small bit of info is that the Linux box does not resolve names or
get an active ping outside of the network.

Thanks,

If you explore the modem related info there, it's believed that any
hardware modem built around a USR or Texas Instruments chipset are the
best. You needn't have to buy an external modem. They cost more and
what with cable and all, take up space. Plus they deprive you of one of
your serial ports. I have a cheap (actually it was free, very old) ISA
Phoebe (basically a USR clone) built on a TI chipset that's
bulletproof.
There's also recommended PCI internal modems at:
  http://www.kcdata.com/~gromitkc/winmodem.html (about half way down
the page). Many are USR or TI chipsets, and begin at < $40.

huh? why would less options ever be favorable for a linux environment.
It's all about user preference and flexible configurations.

I don't think it's about shoulds and shouldn'ts, I can't imagine any moral
reason why a user should be disallowed from activating double clicking, or
for that matter why a user should be disallowed from activating single
clicking.

FYI, I asked for 6 button mouse for Christmas!

(ps: is unix/linux the home of the three button mouse?)

I guess I failed to make my point. There should be no double
clicking at all. There should be group select and drag. There
should be no nono nonono alt or ctl + mousebutton clicks ever.
Only one mouse button, never two, should bring up a menu. We
don't have this because the people at kde and gnome keep
trying to be like windows instead of better.

Re: [newbie] Making a new SWAP partition.

2000-12-14 Thread Adrian Smith

ya know, truth be told, i didn't really *see* much difference.
of course i have always asked the question "if your computer now opens a program 14
milliseconds faster, do you really know it?" also, i added ram just before upgrading
to 7.2. so that somewhat makes it hard for me to make before/after statements.
actually, in some ways my system seems slower.
example: when enlightenment is starting there is a noticeable pause.
before, there was no pause.
however -- someone on the list a while back mentioned that they had a similar
situation. resolution was that their video card / monitor parameters were not set up
right, so the video wasn't as fast as it could have been, thus the computer *looked*
slower than it actually was. i think i might be in that situation.
so, i can't honestly say my computer is way fast now --
and it's a 250MHz also, not the fasting thing around --
but, at $73 for 128M of ram, what the heck.
i duel boot windows & it doesn't behave any faster either.
my personal opinion, if you have the money, get at least 128M (i have 188M) but i
would say no more that 256M unless you are a power user.
when i did just have 60M my linux box ran just fine on that.

Re: [newbie] AvpLinux?

2000-12-14 Thread bascule

this question will either appear highly intelligent or completely show up my
ignorance, only your replies will tell, oh well, once more...

is it correct that with tcp/ip packets can arrive out of order and are
reconstructed properly at the receiving end?, if so, then how can any
intermediary machine scan for virii since traffic 'passing through' will not
be coherent as it were, unless the intermediary machine either copies all
packets and constructs the resulting file and then communicates a warning if
a virus is found (horse, door, bolted anyone?) or delays delivery until the
whole file is examined and then sends it on (which would - roughly - double
transmission time) how does this virus scanning work?

email scanning clearly is different since it is usually collected centrally
and then passed on

how way out am i on this?

Re: [newbie] NEED HELP SETTING UP MY CABLE CONNECTION FOR MANDRAKE 7.0

2000-12-14 Thread Joseph Red

I had this issue when I first installed. Is it actually loading the module
or crapping out? I have had it recognize the card but not load the module.
My first guess would be that you aren't passing proper IRQ info to module.
Ok, my second guess, my first was DNS :) I'm sure there is a way to check
if a module is loaded, but I don't know it... If you know the IRQ the card
is supposed to be using, go into HardDrake (? I'm not sure what the gui
setup util is called) & check to make sure it is configured for the proper
IRQ.

Most likely you need to enter the DNS server addresses. That is picked up
by DHCP in Win9x, but if I'm not mistaken, Linux needs to have it specified.
If you can't ping www.yahoo.com, but you *can* ping 204.71.200.74 (the

AVPLinux is the Kaspersky AntiVirus Program for Linux. It allows a linux
server to scan incoming internet communications for intruders dangerous to
the DOS/Windows computers it is serving as a gateway. It is a commercial
product with telephone support 24 hours a day to registered users from
Kaspersky Labs and with email support from the Australian Office, also to
registered users. There are versions of AVP for Novell, DOS, Windows, and
linux.

If you have installed from CDs with rpm, check /usr/doc and /usr/share/doc
for an AVP folder. The 36-page *.pdf file available from the web appears to
be in Cyrillic.

observed some interesting problems:

KDE is difficult to shutdown. Sometimes it will take several clicks to the
"logout" to close it.

KPPP docks into the panel and then suddenly disappears but, stays connected.

Complete freez-up. No mouse pointer movement, unable to change to another
consol, unable to kill the xserver with CTRL ALT BACKSAPCE, enormous HD
activity.

...but I still have fun!

Any tips? Thanks.

P.S. I am using the ReiserFS.

Re: [newbie] About GeForce 2 MX

2000-12-14 Thread Terry C

It will not be a problem. nVidia's driver works for
their entire range of graphics processors. I also have
an GeForce2 MX card (terrific video card) and it also
is using the XServer for the GeForce 2 DDR. No
problems. If you want to do accelerated 3D in Linux,
such as for games, you will need to get the latest
Linux drivers from nVidia. Someone has also written a
How-to to install these drivers in Mandrake 7.2, the
instructions from nVidia, and the instructions on
linuxnewbie don't work for 7.2. If you look back
through the archives of this list you can probably
find the URL for it. If you can't find it let me know
and I'll try to get the instructions for you.

An external modem on a serial port is dead easy to configure--no need for
harddrake, nor is it really designed to work with external modems on a serial
port; just use kppp and tell it the serial port the modem is connected to--no
special drivers either. Do NOT buy a USB modem--many of them are winmodems.

Anyway, there is an article about someone who did get a conexant working on

[newbie] A good external or similar modem to use with MD 7.2 / Harddrake + Sounds

2000-12-14 Thread John Carlarne

Hi there,

Unfortunately, my computer came with a conexant win modem with a via
chipset/ chaintech main board. Harddrake has apparently detected my sound
apparatus and appears to work a bit, however very quietly. It chose the via
technology option from the list. I am getting in contact with my computer
builder to find out exactly what sound apparatus is installed - just in
case. Meanwhile I am fiddling about trying to increase the volume on the
thing.

More importantly, I am thinking about buying an external modem so that I can
communicate from within my Linux environment. I know that there are lists of
compatible hardware around, but I would be most keen to hear from anyone who
has bought an external or similar modem that was dead easy to configure with
hard drake and works really well.

On another note. I initially used system commander 2000 to try and manage a
partition in preparation for Red Hat. It was terrible and I thought a waste
of money. Diskdrake is way better so far. I am currently running Mandrake
7.2.

Many thanks and apologies for being long-winded.

But you probably don't need the 2.2.18 to have your scanner working. I
have the 2.2.17 and my epson Perfecto 1200USB scanner is working fine.
The mandrake kernel has the patch to have the USB running.

What is on the CD that you're trying to mount? This is, for instance, the

Re: [newbie] Making a new SWAP partition.

2000-12-14 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

I had 64MB earlier this year. With this, running GNOME 1.1, I constantly had
over 50% usage of my 128MB swap. My HDD was constantly churning, and my
system was pretty slow. After my upgrade to 192MB, things were *much* faster.
I only really needed my swap when running VMware. I did not gain much more in
performance (if any) following my upgrade to 256MB (unless I was running
VMware). From this, I believe 128MB is the sweet spot for Linux with KDE or
GNOME. RAM nowadays is very cheap, so it's worth getting more. It also
reduces power consumption, heat, and wear & tear on your HDD.

Try a different mixer, like aumix (console-only).

Can you upgrade to 7.2 final by downloading it (get the ISOs or use
MandrakeUpdate) or buying a CD from a Linux store (either online or offline)?
If you can do without a big shiny box and a manual (there's plenty of
documentation on the CD and on the Internet), you can get a copy of 7.2
*very* cheaply. And it's legal too! Man I love GPL!

Most problems of this nature involve "upgraded" systems.

I too experienced strangeness until I went back and reformatted and
installed cleanly. This cured all such problems.

7.2 is far more stable and solid than 7.1 in my experience.
