Re: [newbie] gates gets Linux
Here's a quick rule of thumb, don't install every package, especially ones that you don't know or specifically need, you could be creating security holes. Go look around for security documents, it'll show you things that you need and don't need. Also, mandrake7.1 (and 7.2) has a security level feature in in drakconf, set it to maximum. --- Anthony Daniell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Thats true, I believe that linux should not become > like windoze > > windoze sucks and makes people lazy. Speaking of chipsets, the cheapest external modems seem to be those with Rockwell chipsets, at least here in New Zealand. I'm not too sure what the story is with this - it seems from what I've found on the web that the older rockwell chipset modems were semi-winmodem but later ones tend to have hardware error correction. Since suppliers are only telling me "has Rockwell chipset" when I ask to quote for a Linux compatible modem, do I have any need to be worried about compatability? I've looked at the modem compatibility page at http://members.tripod.co.uk/uk_radio_amateurs/modemlin.html but the brands/models we get downunder don't feature on it. Cheers Barry

This is really nutty. I don't get it that a system must have some sort of arbitrary difficulty to be considered legitament. What's up with that? We studied lawsuit cases where system failures caused injury and death, the cause of these failures were do to this "arbitrary" complexity of the system, and the resolutions for those failures were typcially was to understand that the human being was the weakest part of the system; consquently, it was up to the system to reasonably guard against human failure. hmm... -Original Message- From: Anthony Daniell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 14, 2000 6:23 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] gates gets Linux Thats true, I believe that linux should not become like windoze windoze sucks and makes people lazy. RE: [newbie] Internet access through MS proxy server
You mentioned that your MS Proxy was running Socks. Are routing services turned off? Could you route to the Linux box? I.E. Find some way to give Linux direct access to the internet by utilizing routing... If the NT machine only provides access via socks your might be SOL. I'm unaware of a viable socks client for Linux... Re:DNS Socks clients will normally rely on the Socks host to handle resolution requests, either directly or by forwarding them on up to a full DNS. It's no surprize that Linux cannot resolve since it is not able to talk to the Socks host. Logging in via Samba is not going to help you with this if the system is hamstrung by Socks. -JMS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jeremy Sudderth Sent: Thursday, December 14, 2000 1:51 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Internet access through MS proxy server Agreeably so, but at the moment I am forced to go through the NT machine. RE: [newbie] mounting cdrom problems
Any mount entry in the /etc/fstab file, can be automatically mounted, by calling mount to the mount point. Ie, you have a nfs mount set up, that isn't currently mounted. Call the mount point "mount /mnt/nfs_mount" and it will mount. Provided it is in the fstab file. -Original Message- From: Michael zhao [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, December 14, 2000 4:17 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] mounting cdrom problems mount /dev/cdrom -t iso9660 /mnt/cdrom note: /mnt/cdrom should be a existing path - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, December 14, 2000 5:33 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] mounting cdrom problems > In a message dated 12/14/2000 6:35:33 AM Eastern Standard Time, > [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > > > mount /mnt/cdrom > > shouldnt it be 'mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom' > > ~Lance

If I try to run the created project an error dialog says "makefile is not found". I suspect that the problem due to an incompatibility between the system used to build the precompiled version and Mandrake 7.2, but I could be wrong. RE: [newbie] gates gets Linux
huh? why would less options ever be favorable for a linux environment. It's all about user preference and flexible configurations. I don't think it's about shoulds and shouldn'ts, I can't imagine any moral reason why a user should be disallowed from activating double clicking, or for that matter why a user should be disallowed from activating single clicking. Re: [newbie] Making a new SWAP partition.
ya know, truth be told, i didn't really *see* much difference. of course i have always asked the question "if your computer now opens a program 14 milliseconds faster, do you really know it?" also, i added ram just before upgrading to 7.2. so that somewhat makes it hard for me to make before/after statements. actually, in some ways my system seems slower. example: when enlightenment is starting there is a noticeable pause. before, there was no pause. however -- someone on the list a while back mentioned that they had a similar situation. resolution was that their video card / monitor parameters were not set up right, so the video wasn't as fast as it could have been, thus the computer *looked* slower than it actually was. i think i might be in that situation. so, i can't honestly say my computer is way fast now -- and it's a 250MHz also, not the fasting thing around -- but, at $73 for 128M of ram, what the heck. i duel boot windows & it doesn't behave any faster either. my personal opinion, if you have the money, get at least 128M (i have 188M) but i would say no more that 256M unless you are a power user. when i did just have 60M my linux box ran just fine on that. Re: [newbie] AvpLinux?
this question will either appear highly intelligent or completely show up my ignorance, only your replies will tell, oh well, once more... is it correct that with tcp/ip packets can arrive out of order and are reconstructed properly at the receiving end?, if so, then how can any intermediary machine scan for virii since traffic 'passing through' will not be coherent as it were, unless the intermediary machine either copies all packets and constructs the resulting file and then communicates a warning if a virus is found (horse, door, bolted anyone?) or delays delivery until the whole file is examined and then sends it on (which would - roughly - double transmission time) how does this virus scanning work? email scanning clearly is different since it is usually collected centrally and then passed on how way out am i on this? bascule > AVPLinux is the Kaspersky AntiVirus Program for Linux. Re: [newbie] NEED HELP SETTING UP MY CABLE CONNECTION FOR MANDRAKE 7.0
I had this issue when I first installed. Is it actually loading the module or crapping out? I have had it recognize the card but not load the module. My first guess would be that you aren't passing proper IRQ info to module. Ok, my second guess, my first was DNS :) I'm sure there is a way to check if a module is loaded, but I don't know it... If you know the IRQ the card is supposed to be using, go into HardDrake (? I'm not sure what the gui setup util is called) & check to make sure it is configured for the proper IRQ. Most likely you need to enter the DNS server addresses. That is picked up by DHCP in Win9x, but if I'm not mistaken, Linux needs to have it specified. If you can't ping www.yahoo.com, but you *can* ping 204.71.200.74 (the address that www.yahoo.com resolves to on my box) then that's the issue. It will not be a problem. nVidia's driver works for their entire range of graphics processors. I also have an GeForce2 MX card (terrific video card) and it also is using the XServer for the GeForce 2 DDR. No problems. If you want to do accelerated 3D in Linux, such as for games, you will need to get the latest Linux drivers from nVidia. What is on the CD that you're trying to mount? This is, for instance, the message you would get if you tried to mount a music CD (since music CDs don't contain a filesystem). M. Re: [newbie] Making a new SWAP partition.
I had 64MB earlier this year. With this, running GNOME 1.1, I constantly had over 50% usage of my 128MB swap. My HDD was constantly churning, and my system was pretty slow. After my upgrade to 192MB, things were *much* faster. I only really needed my swap when running VMware. I did not gain much more in performance (if any) following my upgrade to 256MB (unless I was running VMware). From this, I believe 128MB is the sweet spot for Linux with KDE or GNOME. RAM nowadays is very cheap, so it's worth getting more. It also reduces power consumption, heat, and wear & tear on your HDD. Re: [newbie] Problems With The Audio Mixer (/dev/mixer)
Try a different mixer, like aumix (console-only). Can you upgrade to 7.2 final by downloading it (get the ISOs or use MandrakeUpdate) or buying a CD from a Linux store (either online or offline)? If you can do without a big shiny box and a manual (there's plenty of documentation on the CD and on the Internet), you can get a copy of 7.2 *very* cheaply. And it's legal too! Man I love GPL! [newbie] mkinitrd problems
I am trying to upgrade my current 2.2.15-4mdksecure kernel to 2.4.0-0.13mdk, and whenever I do a mkinitrd, I get an error: #mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.0-0.13.img 2.4.0-0.13mdk error: -d option is not supported on Linux error: -d option is not supported on Linux Error creating temporaries. Try again I upgraded mkinitrd, SysVinit, initscripts, kernel, and kernel-docs before this with no problem. The strange thing is that I got the same error trying to do mkinitrd on another machine earlier today. Am I using the wrong command syntax? Any help appreciated, Victor

[newbie] mounting cdrom problems
Dear Sir/Madame, I installed the last version of Linux mandrake, but I have problems in mounting my cdrom, model: hp cd-writer 9100 series In particular, I have the following problem when I mount it mount /mnt/cdrom mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom, or too many mounted file systems The first line is OK, and the error is reported in the second line. RE: [newbie] MD7.2 Stability
I hope you did a clean install to a reformatted partition(s). Most problems of this nature involve "upgraded" systems. I too experienced strangeness until I went back and reformatted and installed cleanly. This cured all such problems. 7.2 is far more stable and solid than 7.1 in my experience. -JMS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Hektor Meyer Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2000 7:07 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Michael (Nozy) Falzon Subject: Re: [newbie] MD7.2 Stability Hi. I installed MD7.2 with KDE 2.0 final on my HP Pavilion. Since then I observed some interesting problems: KDE is difficult to shutdown. Sometimes it will take several clicks to the "logout" to close it. KPPP docks into the panel and then suddenly disappears but, stays connected. Complete freez-up. No mouse pointer movement, unable to change to another consol, unable to kill the xserver with CTRL ALT BACKSAPCE, enormous HD activity. ...but I still have fun! Any tips? Thanks. Hektor P.S. I am using the ReiserFS.

Hey all Thanks to all who've replied, but I'm still not there. Updated the locate database, searched again with locate sndconfig in a console as root and searched from Konquerer as root. sndconfig is not on my installation, so can I get it somewhere or is there another tool I could use?
