[newbie] kmail problems

2000-12-15 Thread angus

Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help!
I have logged on to the net but when I try and use kmail to check/retrieve
my email nothing happens. There's definitely mail on the server waiting!
I have added an incoming account. I presumed the correct type to add was
"pop3" rather than "local mailbox". Then I configured the account with my
name, login, password. However I don't know what to put in "host" or "port".
Any ideas. I have presumed that "name" can be anything I want and that the
crucial items are login and password.

Also on the sending side (if I ever get there!!!). Should I use "sendmail"
or SMTP?
On windoze I used to use SMTP but don't want to assume?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Angus

RE: [newbie] gates gets Linux

2000-12-15 Thread Vic

I hope that he does not think its "the os for everyone"
some will like it, some will hate it, and if he
does maek it, I hope hje will consider making
hsi version of the os still configurable and
do what *the user/operator* tells it to do
instead of doing what *it* wants to do.

I choose to use Linux because it obeys me,
runs clean, and gets the job done for me.

My /etc/fstab says

/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

This is from a clean installation of mdk7.2 (not an upgrade). As you can see,
it is no different to your line.

Re: [newbie] gates gets Linux

2000-12-15 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

Have you even *looked* at alternatives that *can* do these things? Before you
start bitching, I can say that I'm sure that Sawfish can do at least half of
these things, and its configurability is getting better all the time. Try
looking at the settings instead of just complaining when all of what you want
isn't there by default and served to you on a silver platter.

My apologies if I sound rude, but there are many other window managers out
there apart from Enlightenment. Sawfish, in fact, is the GNOME default, and
can do (IMHO) everything that Enlightenment can do and more.

[newbie] pcmcia eth0 not started by network script

2000-12-15 Thread Olof Liungman

Hi,

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network fails to start my pcmcia ethernet card, apparently
because I'm missing the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. How
should this file look? I've taken a peek at ifcfg-lo (loopback), but it
contains some data I do not have for the eth0 device, such as IP-address (I
connect via a DSL-modem using Roaring Penguins PPPoE software).

Note that the
ethernet card and my DSL-connection work fine if I start up eth0 manually using
'ifconfig eth0 up mtu 1500'. It is an incovenience, though.

My setup is Mandrake
7.0-2 (kernel 2.2.14-15mdk) on a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop. The ethernet card
is from 3COM and is recognized by the pcmcia software upon booting.

Please reply directly or cc me as I had to leave the list some time back
because of the volume of mail.

Thanks,

Olof

There should not be any problem with the config of eth0. It might fail in
the initial stages for u may not have given the proper ip addrress etc.Pl
go to DRAKECONFIG and do the needful. Try giving the ip of 127.0.0.1 for
the loopback and 192.168.1.1 with netmask 255.255.255.0 Give ilt a local
name llike DHANAPAL and it will start working.

Re: [newbie] No sound from CD

2000-12-15 Thread Jim Crossley

UPDATE: I replaced my sound card and everything finally seems to be
working fine. The old card (SoundBlaster PCI128) was driven by the
es1370 driver; the new one (SoundBlaster Live! Value) by emu10k1. I
don't know whether the card or the driver was to blame.

Contrary to some advice out there, I was pleasantly surprised to find
that I did not have to unmount the supermount'ed cdrom in order to play
audio CD's.

I had this issue a while back when I forgot I had installed without
setting permissions to 'low'. So, first, set your permissions to low
or at least medium. Setting permissions too high will only make your
life more difficult, and add very little protection (unless you're

you'll prob'ly need to run 'chmod a+rx /dev/dsp' to enable audio,

Guess I'll put my 2 pesos in (again ;>. Ram is what'll do. PC66, PC
100, PC133, PC, are just labels. Good ram, is judged best by
its' rating in ns (eg, 8) and it's CL (cas latency rating). Even these
specs are no better than the reputation of the manufacturer and/or
vendor. AND even then, it's still no better than how it actually
performs in the real world. Ask any overclocker.

I've had ancient sticks of SDram (made before the PC66 label was
even invented) that ran flawlessly at 133mhz with -0- errors. I've got
a stick of Micron/Crucial 7ns that'll run at 155mhz, flawlessly ... but
I've also got an old stick of Mosel Vitelic 8ns that was in there right
a long with it at 155mhz during the same test. The Crucial is labeled
as 'PC133 Cas2', the Mosel as 'PC100'. Labels, including 'for Dell' or
'for Compaq' mean very little. Ram is what'll do with -0- errors.

BUT even more important is the stability and quality of the
motherboard the ram (or anything else for that matter) is run on.
Excellent quality boards like Asus, Abit, MSI, and Soyo provide extra
IO support to the ram. A large part of that is by boosting the IO to
3.5 <> 3.7 volts rather than the normal 3.3, trace design, and extra
capacitance. That's why ready mades (Dell, Gateway, Compaq, ...) need
good ram. The motherboards they use suck.

Bottom line is ram might run great on one board, and suck on another,
but even sucky ram is better than swap ;>

[newbie] Default /etc/fstab

2000-12-15 Thread Jim Crossley

In trying to update my kernel, I forgot to include the supermount patch,
so when I booted with the new kernel, an init script disabled
supermount, removing the entries in /etc/fstab! And then like a dummy,
I went and removed the line for /mnt/cdrom from the file thinking
supermount would put it back when I booted from the old kernel. It
didn't, but it would have if instead of deleting the line, I just ran
'supermount -i enable'! I know that NOW.

Can some kind soul please post the correct /mnt/cdrom line from
/etc/fstab for me please?

I got things to work with this line:

/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

but I feel like I remember some other options being put in there by the
Mandrake installer (7.2).

Thanks.

Even MacOS X (yes, the Mac!) is going to have options for multi-button mice.
Even then, people still have the choce to keep their 1-button mouse if they
want. People have the final say in what they want, not some monolithic
corporation that doesn't really care about you, only about their wallets. If
only MacOS X was like that in other departments also. For example, presently
the GUI look is not easily configurable. Also (more as a side note), Apple
recently asked VA Linux to remove Mac-lookalike themes (Aqua, AquaX, eMac and
eMac-GTK) from their themes.org website.

JonYou need to install /usr/bin/xscanimage as a gimp
plug-in by creating a symlink called xscanimage to
/usr/bin/xscanimage in ~/.gimp-1.1/plug-ins. After that a
new item called 'acquire image' will appear on the 'Xtns'
drop-down-menu. Then the 'acquire image' menu choice in gimp
will access your scanner with the xscanimage program.

[newbie] Soundcard permissions

2000-12-15 Thread Roger Sherman

Or at least I think it's a permissions issue. A user on my PC is unable to
use anything that requires sound; every time he does, a box pops up that
says:

Couldn't open audio

Please check that:
1 you have the correct output plugin selected
2 no other programs is (heh...silly) blocking the soundcard
3 your soundcard is configured properly

But, while I was trying to get it to work in his profile, I opened a
terminal window, brought up XMMS as root, and it worked fine, which is why
I think its a permissions problem.

One further note - that grandiose music that playes when KDE opens takes
way longer for this user than it does when I'm logged in as user, and you
hear this click after it finishes, and you again hear the click for the
shutdown tune...

So, what do I change permissions for? This permissions thing is still
really new to me so as much detail as possible would be great...

Thanks!

One more time:
I want to be able to select a rectangle full of files and drag the
lot to another directory using only the mouse. I want to be able to
copy with the right mb, place with the left mb, and paste with the
middle. I want to be able to call up a menu for gnome and Enlightenment
complete by clicking buttons 1&2. I want to be able to start a program
with a single click, and drag with the right mouse button instead of the
left, which was a better way, because it made group select work. I want
to call up the running items in a desktop by clicking 2&3. I want to
delete by clicking 1&3. I want to be able to scroll faster or slower by
using combinations of mb's. I want 1&2&3 to do something. KDE won't do
it because W$ won't do it, and they intend to be able to port stuff to
W$. Gnome won't do it because they listen mainly to W$ users, and W$
users *have* *bad* *habits*.
I don't want to restrict anything. You do.

Hi Roger,

you have to press 'ALT' key and with this key pressed, type a code in the
numeric keys on the right. You can see the code for each character at
http://www.geocities.com/chofeta/Caracteres.html
You have to type first the number in the row and then the number in the col.
ie: if you want to have a '|' simbol, you can get it pressing ALT + 124.

This web page is in Spanish (español). If you have any problem, e-mail-me

You can also buy a Spanish keyboard as mine :-)

For starters, try going through your BIOS and setting "Plug 'n Play OS" to
"no". This worked for my SMC PCI card, which uses the Realtek RTL8029 driver.

Re: [newbie] Modem U.S. Robotics 56K FaxModem External

2000-12-15 Thread s

You probably still need to setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart 16550A port
irq spd_hi

And you probably need to put this in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file to run
each time you boot. I think you still need to do this even if its a
external. Just input the above line when you find your port # and irq # in a
terminial and see. If it works then put in a start up script. You can
probably find your port # and irq # in some config files probably in /etc/
directory. You might find them in Control Panel under information.

hey Rog, glad to point you in the right direction. i wouldn't pay $173 for 128M
either. that's why i have waited so long to upgrade. and i don't normally recomend
companies or products or venders, but crucial did me right, so i'll give 'em a plug
now and then. prices are dropping like flies on hardware (except monitors -- oh how i
drool over a 21 inch screen). i can't believe CD burners are going for $200 these
days - and probably even cheaper now & then on sale.

Adrian, you rule. I went to crucial.com about 6 months, maybe even less,
ago, and 128 meg ram cost $173. I just went now, and it cost $70.16.
Needless to say, I ordered on the spot...I can't freakin wait!!! :-)))

I shall therefore consider that my non-esistant left wrist has been
severely chastised by means of an obscelecent bus ticket...

Actually is not about rules - it's about being able to navigate through
one's system without the need for 'special' techniques. It's about
readability and such.

While I have a disability which limits my use of consoles, and prefer
these days to use point'n'click GUI's, it all depends on whether the
particular chunck of code you using has been organised to recognise
that white-space is not a commandline delimiter, and it's my belief
that few programmers would allow for this senario considering the
extra coding needed.

Meph, just consider this for a moment. You are called out to deal to
a system which you have never seen before. The docs for the system
have been locked away in a secure area (lost??). Some real bright
script-kiddie has this neat security system - he renames certain
important structures in the clients data area by means of inserting
spaces into file and directory names. I've been there a couple of
times, mostly in Win9x systems where the client software is run
to a series of structures by means of called batchfiles.

Referring to filename lengths:
Linux is a *NIX clone - yes?
In many cases software written to Unix specs runs under Linux - yes?
In many cases software written for Linux runs under Unix - yes?

Portability would tend to dictate that there be some conformity.

Jeezz - what a can of worms out of:

>I would have thought that a space was an undesirable if not illegal
>character in a filename let alone a directory name.
>
>Is this not the case?

Which in fact was a question rather than a statement.

Cheers from a severely chastised old fogey who actually really enjoys
messing about with opsys's/opsyses/opsysii

Hi Geoff.

Geoff Thomas wrote:

The hostname is set by the hostname command, /bin/hostname. But usually
that's done by a startup script (/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit) that reads the
contents of a configuration file (/etc/sysconfig/network) that contains
the name you want. In that file, you should see a HOSTNAME variable.
Set it to what you like. Keep in mind, however, that if you're
connecting to your ISP via DHCP (as you likely would with a cable or DSL
line), you'll save yourself some grief by appending "localdomain" to
your hostname. So if for example you wanted to name your box Merle, you
would put this line in /etc/sysconfig/network:

HOSTNAME=merle.localdomain

That should cause your login prompt to "welcome you to merle."

If you have a static IP address, then forget what I just said. :-)

Other questions that begin "where in the startup files...?" can often be
answered by the following command:

# grep -i "text to search for" $(find /etc/rc.d -type f)

Here's the output for a "hostname" search:

# grep -i hostname $(find /etc/rc.d -type f)
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql: pid_file=$datadir/`hostname`.pid
/etc/rc.d/rc:# things, such as setting the hostname.
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:HOSTNAME=`/bin/hostname`
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:if [ -z "$HOSTNAME" -o "$HOSTNAME" = "(none)" ];
then
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:HOSTNAME=localhost
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:# Set the hostname.
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:action "Setting hostname ${HOSTNAME}: " hostname
${HOSTNAME}
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:   hostname ${HOSTNAME}
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: # Reset the hostname.
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: action "Resetting hostname ${HOSTNAME}: "
hostname ${HOSTNAME}

If you take a closer look at rc.sysinit, you'll see that the file
/etc/sysconfig/network is "sourced" near the top.

Switchdesk disappeared here also.
You can check if there is an .xinitrc file that messes things up.
In your .Xdefaults you could write

exec gnome-session

Make sure that your .Xclients file does not kick you into KDE though. You
can put the exec in there instead of in .Xdefaults.

and that should get you back to gnome.

When I installed MDK 7.2 a month or so ago, it came up in Gnome. I swear
that at that point I used switchdesk to change to KDE. Now I'd like to
play with Gnome some more but I cannot find it on the system anywhere.

I've persused the list archives, and found some messages indicating that I
should create a .Xclients file, which I did, but startx still brings me up

Do I also need to modify some other file? Was switchdesk truly removed by
some upgrade I did along the way?

I agree. If you start forcing methods of doing things onto users, then it is
just M$ all over again. The key to Linux is choice. I don't want a
Stalin/Hitler/Ze Dong/Gates telling me what to do! I personally hate single
clicks. I find that I can configure my window manager (Sawfish) to do funky
things with double-clicks, thus giving me much more functionality. If someone
else wants single-clicking, they can have it, but not at the expense of
others like myself.

Come to think of it, you *can* make Sawfish (and hence most of GNOME) to
accept single clicks. If David Raleigh Arnold had even bothered to look at
the Sawfish control centre, he would have noticed that this is very possible.

This is likely a 7.2 problem rather than a RAM-related one. I have had speed
problems with Sawfish/GNOME starting up ever since I got 7.2.

You only need extra RAM if you use your swap often. You will not notice much
of a performance gain if you don't use (much) swap. This depends on how many
and what applications you run at the same time. If all you do is check your
e-mail, then you probably won't notice much of a difference at all. If,
however, you use a large programme like Netscape often, then it could make a
big difference. Your desktop environment makes a difference here too. GNOME
and KDE are very memory hungry, Blackbox and IceWM are not.

Re: [newbie] Hostname

2000-12-15 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

As root, load linuxconf. Go to Networking -> Host name and IP network devices
-> Host name. You can change your host name here.

In versions of Mandrake before 7.2, you could set your host name in the file
/etc/hostname. I have found that this file no longer works, and if you have
it you can even delete it with no side effects.

[newbie] Switchdesk

2000-12-15 Thread The BOFH

When I installed MDK 7.2 a month or so ago, it came up in Gnome. I swear
that at that point I used switchdesk to change to KDE. Now I'd like to
play with Gnome some more but I cannot find it on the system anywhere.

I've persused the list archives, and found some messages indicating that I
should create a .Xclients file, which I did, but startx still brings me up
in KDE.

Do I also need to modify some other file? Was switchdesk truly removed by
some upgrade I did along the way?

Thanks,

S

[newbie] USB Scanner

2000-12-15 Thread Francisco Alcaraz Ariza

Dear Antony; first of all you must be sure you
have the usb module (Mandrake 7.2. install the patch for the 2.2.17-21 kernel
and it is avalaible). Afterthat it is important to know if your scanner is
supported; in the sane page (http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-backends.html)
I can not see it neither in the very interesting http://www.buzzard.org.uk/jonathan/scanners-usb.html;
but in this last page there is a link to two mailing list where you could be
helped by experts; perhaps your scanner it is supported using the appropriate
commands.
I hope this will help
you

RE: [newbie] gates gets Linux

2000-12-15 Thread abramo

whatever. this is a dumb conversation. try playing quake3 or UT with only a single
mouse button.

Mice have more then one button because people use them for more then navigating their
desktop GUI.

Oh yes, in windows everything on my machine is set to single click but in windowmaker
I like double click.

Re: [newbie] AvpLinux?

2000-12-15 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

AvpLinux, I believe, is a version of AntiViral ToolKit Pro (AVP, since
renamed to AVX) for Linux. Since there are no real virus treats to Linux (due
to its better, more secure design and general lack of interest by virus
developers), this is not a programme to detect Linux virii. Instead, this
scans for WinDOS virii as they come through. This is only really useul if you
have a dual-boot machine and you download Windoze files with Linux, or if
your Linux box acts as some kind of hub/server/firewall to a network of
Windoze boxes. The virus scanner will stop all WinDOS virii before they get
to the other computers, so that you won't have to keep an up-to-date virus
scanner on each machine (a nightmare for administrators).

AVX (www.avx.com) is giving this software away for free, so it may be worth
investigating. Apparently it runs as a daemon, scanning all incoming packets.
