[newbie] KDE 2.1 CVS Update RPM's for 7.2 (and 7.1 and 7.0, with some work)
Hello, I have made a set of update RPM's for 7.2 available for KDE 2.1 CVS code. The RPM's are made from CVS code of 12-29-2000. These RPM's are NOT supported by MandrakeSoft. Please report bugs in the code to [EMAIL PROTECTED] using the bug reporting utilities found on Help-->Report Bugs in any KDE application. Please report any packaging problems to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Messages posted in the mailling lists regarding these RPM's will be ignored. You can find these rpm's at: FTP: ftp://nebsllc.com/pub/KDE_UPDATE/ (primary) ftp://us.mandrakesoft.com/pub/kde/KDE_UPDATE/ (mirror) HTTP: http://www.nebsllc.com/KDE_UPDATE/ (primary) The source RPM's are available as well but are 100% unsupported. I will ignore any messages regarding these, they built here but as the code is beta at this time some of them needed some help compiling. (hint: look up the --short-circuit flag). User's of MandrakeUpdate can point to any of the above directories but please remember that MandrakeUpdate can not install dependencies. The directory also includes an update to cups, qtcups, and kups which adds some dependencies. While these are NOT required for the KDE update you may want to consider doing these updates manually. Again, these are unsupported and just provided because I needed to do them anyways. For install instructions see: http://www.kde.org/install-binaries.html Mandrake 7.0 and 7.1 Users: These RPM's should work for you as well but you will need to find several dependencies to get them to install. You can find the directions for these at: http://kde2.newmail.ru/mandrake_rpms.html - I have not tested this, but am told it works. -Chris ---

[newbie] Installation hangs on hard drive detection

I decided to give the new 2.4 test kernel a try out, downloading from a cooker mandrake rpm site, but this kernel crashes my pc after 5 minutes of browsing/ using xmms, machine just locks, anyone guess any reason, Maybe I have an idea. the kernel seems to load some superprobe thingy , This detects my LPT port even though I have disabled it in CMOS set up to gain extra IRQ (my IRQ's are full!) maybe this is interfering with Sound card which is using IRQ 5 & 7, any other ideas?,

Re: [newbie] Flashing BIOS under Linux?
Morning, > But how can I run an .exe file in linux?? Only if the app is actually something that runs in Linux. The extensions, in most cases in Linux, are arbitrary. In this case, not likely. But again, if you can find a way to get it to floppy, you may have a chance. If it's not bootable, as was my bios update, your options are limited to either installing, at least, dos, or asking a friend to run the exe, which would likely ask for a floppy to format & install the bios boot to. > Thats why I like unix (Linux) better than dos or windows, > hehehe. I'll go along with that. All I can find Windows being better for than a nix is as a game platform. Particularly since now with lm7.2 & Enlightenment 0.15, as opposed to RH 6.0 & whatever version of E came with that, I don't have to reboot at least once a day as I also had in Windows (though Windows often required multiple boots in a 24 hour period). -- Forwarded Message -- Subject: SCSI, CD-RW, LS120 Problem Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 22:41:26 -0500 From: Jeffrey Norris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I changed the locations of my CD-RW and LS-120 drives and now the system thinks the LS-120 is my CD-RW. [newbie] Juno ISP in Linux?
Dear friends: I have a dual-boot Linux/Win98 system. In Windows use Juno as my ISP, that is, Juno Premium, the commercial version without the banner ads. I would very much like to use Juno as my dial-up in Linux. Is there any way to do this? Currently, I use Bellsouth dial-up, which doesn't support Linux any more than Juno. Yet, I have no problem connecting to the Internet via Bellsouth. Is that technically feasible in Linux? [newbie] Mandrake Coporate Server 1.0 SSH installation and Frontpage andSamba problem
I have resently installed mandrake coporate server 1.0 on a petium 100 with 48 megs of ram and a 2.1 gig hard drive... It installed fine. and its main purpose is to be a mail, samba and web server for a university residencs server with internet connection. the appache web server that came installed is supposed to come with the frontpage 2000 patch so that I can install the frontpage server extensions which I have already downloaded from microsoft. Does anyone know how to get the server extensions fully installed and running 100%. I also have a problem installing SSH with I got from one of the crypto ftp site on the mandrake web site.. it wants a dependency crypto.so.1 file which I cannot find.. The server has 2 network cards for now. to help seperate the LAN into segments. I got routing working and samba. But the machines on seperate subnets are unable to see each other on the same workgroup. How do I get this working. WINS has something to do with it..but could somebody explain what I should do to get it to work.. Our old server before had redhat 5 on it which seemed VERY vulnerble to hackers because was not updated regularly.. and I want to stop this now. Hello, I don't blame linux for not having drivers or surport for my hard ware. I believe that the company that makes the device should do this not mandrake or any other distro. Like you said M$ put the companies on the spot and they should not be aloud to do this. If only our politations would do the right thing and look after the people. My video card has linux drivers on the cd. But I did not need them as mandrake 7.1 worked first time with no problems at all. I have three distros and am playing around with them to see which one I like. Why use linux cause windoze costs heaps and crashes heaps. I am going to learn linux even if it kills me. I am having fun trying to upgrade kde 1.x to kde 2.01 I have all the files on cd for suse 7 but now the fun begins how do I use them. I did try kpackage but it won't look at the rpm files, I think it might be me not knowing how to use it, but I'm not complaining about this as this is part of the learning curve. A problem I am having and completely fail to understand is that my HP 930 C printer was auto detected and installed on a automagic recommended installation and printed a test page but just sits and stares at me when requested to print by using the print command in a word processor or text editor. No way can I induce it to print. The printer is connected to a USB port and works just fine in windoze. What am I missing and how might I get this thing to print. I like what I am seeing in Linux and if I can get the printer firing will probably only want to use windoze for banking. Have a Compaq Celeron 500, 64 meg Ram, 8 gig h/d. Thanks, Bill

Read /. and you'll hear of people running Linux on a > wristwatch ;) Some bloke got it going on a Dreamcast too. My reasons for running Linux: (1) It's free (as in beer, not speech). And not just the OS, but the software. The GIMP alone saves you $1,000+ over using Photoshop. (2) It's free (as in speech, not beer). (3) "It's more stable". In my experience, what this has meant is that the OS won't glitch or die on you for no discernable reason - but it can and will glitch or die on you for reasons that are obscure at best to the newbie. Essentially, Linux will let you into its guts to fix the problem when something goes wrong while Windows doesn't. I hope to learn enough to take advantage of that. [newbie] Printer support in 7.2
Hi All, I'm using 7.1, printer is a Canon BJC 3000, works fine in standard mode with BJC 600 driver, for high quality work I'm saving SO5.2 and The Gimp files to their windows counterparts and print from there. Question: in MD 7.2 is there better support for this printer? (Cups?) Not willing to change printer, very good quality and because of the separate ink-tanks cheap to run. :-)) TIA, Herman

Use at least 64M of Ram. As far as being faster than Windows, you know, I can't see much difference--but then, I don't see much difference between a P450 and a P200 either. My PIII 733 only appears to be a little bit faster. It's all a matter of perception, I'm sure. The ONLY place I notice the difference is when compiling the kernel--they all do it pretty fast, but the 733 is done in what seems like a minute and a half or so.

[newbie] Grub boot shell
Hello, I used to get a nice boot shell when booting into Mandrake 7.2. While booting the kernel I used to see the Mandrake logo on the upper half of the screen and the Init part used to be on a graphical shell. The grub used to have two entries for each boot option 1. kernel 2. Don't remember :-( Now I have only one line in the Grub and don't see the shell /graph interface anymore. Could someone tell me what the second line (I assume it has something to do with INIT) has to be? Thank you Berthold

[newbie] trouble with linuxconf upgrade
Greetings all, I have viewed my /var/log/message file and I have a few questions about some error messages that I see. The first is as follows : modprobe: can't lcate module char-major-4 The second is : modprobe: can't locate module binfmt- The third is due to my own lack of good judgement after upgradeing Linuxconf, I suspect that I should not have choosen Force instead of Cancel when the warning came up during the installation. netconf: /sbin/netconf: error in loading shared libraries libgd.so.1: canot open shared object file: no such file or directory linuxconf: running linuxconf hooks: failed. I am also getting a warning where sound slot 0 and 1 are not found. I am not surprised by this as the Crystal chip used on my turtle beach sound card is not yet supported by Mandrake and, the IRQ it is using is also trying to be used by a USB device that I do not have. Any help that can be extended in these matters will be greately appreciated. Have a save New Years Eve. Louis
[newbie] Ram seen in 7.2
Hi all, I have a fairly stable installation of 7.2 and KDE2.1beta1. My problem is I just added another 64mb of ram and it shows up on the initial boot before the OS comes up and it shows up on the control center on hda which has 7.1 installed. It also shows on the first pixmap on boot (the one with the rough looking tux) on both hda and hdc where I have 7.2 installed. But, in 7.2 in the control center when I look in information - memory, it is only showing 64mg I have added the append = "mem=128" to lilo.conf but it does not seem to have made a difference to what the control center reports. Any place else I should edit to get the system to see the mem and use it? Oh, I put the append line just as I typed it above and in each of the image sections as the last statement after read-only. Please let me know if I did that correctly. "Running Linux" the book is not to clear on how to put the append line in lilo.conf. Thanks again for all the help this list is so willing to give. -- Dennis Myers registered linux user #180842

Vic, there's only 2 files (< 300k) need to boot DOS, 'command.com' and 'io.sys'. D/l these two files to a DOS floppy, plus the flash utility (eg, something like 'awdflash.exe') and the .bin file for the bios, and you're set to go. MOF, a minimal DOS boot floppy is best for flashing purposes. _Whatever you do, don't_ try flashing your bios using an emulator. If worse comes to worse I'll email you 'command.com' and 'io.sys' (DOS7.1). I do know, that with nothin but Linux, you can make a DOS bootdisk, add the flash utility and the .bin to it, boot it, and flash your motherboard's bios. I also believe that if you don't know, or aren't sure what you're doin. then don't, unless you're willin to trash your motherboard, or at least have to replace/re-program it's bios chip. -- Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay

Hi, Not likely, Mandrake needs a Pentium to run well, you are better off with something like Red Hat 5.2 for this machine. You may want to run lpstat -a and see what printer is set up as the default printer. RE: [newbie] basic question
Hi, Linux will run along with this amount of ram, albeit a bit slow, for a comparisation, what version of windows are you running? A good low resource WM would be Blackbox, needs some getting used to. KDE and Gnome will run much better with more ram. As for the partition, will you run a dualboot (windows) on this machine? If not, I would start with a swappartition of 96mb and everything else to / HTH, Herman On Fri, 29 Dec 2000, you wrote: > Sorry Herman, our machine has 48meg, will linux run ok?.which is the > program manager and what size should i make my linux partition? > > David and Alicia > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Herman Christiani > Sent: 29 December 2000 10:14 > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [newbie] basic question > > > Hi, > Yes, you can and it will run faster then windows, > but you forgot to mention the amount of ram? > Linux likes it's ram, the more the better. > On Fri, 29 Dec 2000, you wrote: > > Dear all, > > > > Can i install mandrake on my (shame) p200mmx 3.3gig machine? > > > > will it run apps faster than windoze bloatware? > > > > David and Alicia
Re: [newbie] basic question
Hi, Depends probably a lot on the machine in question, you need to have plenty of ram for the KDE desktop, but on my machine: AMD K6-2 500, 192mb ram, 18 gb HDD, there is simply no comparisation even KDE is coming up twice as fast as win98se, I'm clearing windows now off my machine. RE: [newbie] basic question
Dear all, I have a 200mmx with 48meg ram with two disks. C is 3.2 gig with wondoze installed E is only 540meg but is empty. How best should I chop up C to give me appropriate partition room for the mandrake install? Or should i skip this and use 'PhatLinux' instead? David and Alicia
Re: [newbie] How do I see my Linux Drives in Win98SE?
Hi Tom & Civileme, Thanks much for your answers - see below... Re: How do I see my Linux Drives in Win98SE? >> http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm >Explore2fs is prob'ly the oldest, most widely used, best Windoze >app to access your ext2 partition. Take the authors warnings to >heart and be aware that sooner or later, even just copying files >from your Linux partition over to a vfat partition may completely >trash your Linux install. So, for all practical purposes, it would/should only be used to please my satisfaction to see my Linux in Windows just for grins since I really can't see a purpose accept for transferring text based files back and forth, and therefore, there is not much use pursuing this any further unless there is no problem with editing text files? I can save in UNIX from Windows, but I noticed Linux can read my Windows files when I am in Linux. I do have Linux on its on partition/drive of 1BG (only did a 325MB install) and have I guess the 128MB swap drive created.
