No, Bascule's not asking about core dumps, but about the core
device, which definitely shouldn't be deleted. A plain english
explaination of /dev (and /proc) files is here.
http://www.penguinmagazine.com/Magazine/This_Issue/0015
"Unlike ordinary files, device entries are actually pointers to device
drivers in the kernel. Each entry has a "major" and "minor" number
which correspond to a particular driver. These numbers correspond to a
map of devices assigned by the kernel developers. The major number
denotes the general class of the device, while the minor number
specifies the exact device"

Core dumps can be deleted, but they wouldn't be in either /dev or
/proc. This line placed at the end of /etc/bashrc, 'ulimit -c 0' will
prevent core dumps from even being written.

[newbie] KDE Fonts Gone Hogwild Large - Solved!

2001-01-03 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Salut,

I finally tracked down the solution to this annoyance with oversized
fonts. As per my previous email, this is caused by attempting to change
the KDE panel clock to am/pm format through the right-click-option
"Adjust Date & Time".

Solution:
EDIT THIS FILE: /home/yourname/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals
GO FIND: [Locale]
AND CHANGE THE CHARSET LINE TO: Charset=unknown

It is this line that the process "Adjust Date & Time" changes resulting
in assigning KDE with an unsupported ISO set.

I hope you made some sense of my above jibberish.

[newbie] Problem between Linux & WinNtServer4

2001-01-03 Thread Claudio Cardenas

I have installed win98 (2Gb-fat), winserver4 (3Gb-ntfs) and linux (3Gb-ext2)
in that order and in the moment to execute them, the one that has boot
problems is the winserver4, it leaves me an error message that doesn't exist
the file ntosknl.exe or has been damaged and in the moment to see the
partitions with the Partition Magic in win98, the ntfs no longer exists, it
is observed that they have united the winserver and linux in 1 single
partition (type85). What is the type85? and How can I install the 3
operating systems in a correct way?.

[newbie] jserv

2001-01-03 Thread Christopher Nallo

I'm trying to install Apache jserv on linux mandrake 7.2. The
installation process install apache for me. First question is where is
the installatoin directory for apache. The path in books and in appache
jserv documentation say the default directory is /usr/local/apache but I
don't have that directory. When I go to
./configure \
--prefix=/usr/local/apache \
--enable-rule=SHARED_CORE \
--enable-module=so
make install
I have also tried this example but I don't know where the path to apache
installion directory is
--with-apxs=/path/to/apache/installation/bin/apxs

I have also tried an example in the book java programming on linux

./configure --with-apache-install=/usr --prefix=/opt/apache_jserv \
--with jsdk=/usr/local/Java/JSDK2.0

and it gives me the error ./configure no such file or directory. Any
help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a problem I have had with Star Office. I have found that Star
Office must sometimes be set to Postscript Type 1, or it will not print. The
default in Star Office is Postscript Type 2. Of course, this assumes that
you are using the Generic Printer Queue.

Change the Star Office "Printer Properties/Device" setting to Postscript 2.

[newbie] Kernel upgrade to 2.2.16 WRECKED USING UPDATEMGR

2001-01-03 Thread Fernando . Proietto

I did a stupid thing. I tried to update the Kernel from 2.2.X to 2.2.16
using the Update manager. Little needs to be said -- it didn't work. In fact
my system won't boot anymore. I get a System Panic can't mount root fs on
08:05. Anyway I need to back out of the Kernel upgrade. Does update manager
move the old Kernel and system.map ..etc to backups or does it overwrite
everything...?

I know I need to run a recovery shell. I'm using 'tomsrtbt ver 2.0.37' I can
boot with a floppy but I can't seem to mount the root (/) sda5 disk where my
original Linux is stored. Any help beyond this point would be great,
especially when I finally get the /boot mounted what do I do to repair the
flubbed-up Kernel upgrade? Anyone have any answers...?

Ok...I have a dumb question. Do the old Cups packages have to exist on the

when the updates are added to the system? Cause I added the updates

Seriously though, when I installed the update packages I had just finished

You weren't being lied to You just happened to pick the
one device file that connects the kernel and your ram. Use konq to
check out some other devices, like hda. It will report -o- bytes.
Google 'linux devices' if you want to find out some more about how
these pretend files work. Also check out 'linux device registrar'

and how come you weren't curious that kong said /dev/core was 95mb
when you have 96mb of ram ? Short answer is prob'ly some hardware
you've got is grabbin 1mb to use as virtual firmware. Sort'a a

Firstly, I suggers you attach the file rather than a screenshot of it. its much
smaller.

As for the problem, the files you might need to change the settings on are
/dev/sd*, /mnt/zip. I would just set the
other permissions on those.

the command is (as root):
chmod o+rwx /dev/sd*
chmod o+rwx /mnt/zip

see if that does anything. This will gice everyone write access to all your
scsi devies as a side-effect.#

And lasty, a problem of mine. Once again kmail is slowing everything down to
the point where there is a 5 second delay between me pushing abbutton and
anything happening on screen. Why? It makes typeing very hard and spelling even
harder/

[newbie]StarOffice5.2 Printer set-up

Dear All, I have Mandrake 7.2 and the cups printing with an Epson Stylus
Color printer. It has been working fine with all applications except for
the StarOffice 5.2 that I recently downloaded.

I followed the directions for setting it up with 5.2 using the spadmin

print it does not print. It says it printed but it does not. What else
can I do to make this work? Thank you for your help. Marcia

to Not just Carl,

Please don't. It's very poor netiquette to post attachments to
mailing lists, _particularly_ anything not plain text or over just a
few K. The number one rule for this group, as with most all mailing
lists, is to use plain ASCII text only. So that precludes binaries,
rtf, html, etc., as attachments or inline.

In some unusual circumstances, a small plain text attachment is
deemed necessary or requested by a large number of the group. In that
rare event, netiquette requires a warning, eg, [w/ATTACHMENT] in the
subject line so most users can just delete the message unread. This is
still poor netiquette tho, as many users have to download their email
before they can delete it.

Re: [newbie] SMB 2.0.6 printing under Mandrake 7.2 w/ CUPS

2001-01-03 Thread Till Kamppeter

Oi,

The config files of the Samba 2.0.7 of Mandrake 7.2 are preconfigured
for usage with CUPS, so if you want to use your old config files you
have to overtake the printer-related lines from the new version. In
addition, it is possible that the the 2.0.6 version of Mandrake 7.1 has
no CUPS support compiled in, because that version of Mandrake was still
using LPD as printing system. So even with a correct /etc/smb.conf it is
possible, that your Samba will not work correctly.

I am not an expert in Samba configuration. So I will forward you mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and he can probably help you in configuring
Samba 2.0.7.

[Fwd: [newbie] SMB 2.0.6 printing under Mandrake 7.2 w/ CUPS]

2001-01-03 Thread Till Kamppeter

I)

>
> You are really using Samba 2.0.6? Mandrake 7.2 comes with 2.0.7.
>

It seems like a good place to start with this before I go into all of my
config files is to explain this section. (I don't know how much I possibly
broke doing this.) I started using Samba 2.0.7 with mdk 7.2 on both my main
Linux box and my brother's main Linux box, but the problems I had where so
severe and made so little sense to me that I de-installed all of the Samba
packages and loaded the packages from mdk 7.1.

II) Here is a brief overview of how the machines where configured:
1. My brother's machine was set up to do file services to 2 Windows ME
clients and a Windows 98 client. (Then I had my Linux box over there using
NFS with his machine as the server for a short period.) He also has two NICs
in the machine and uses it to act as a filtering masq box through a cable
modem (Road Runner). His smb.conf file is configured similar to mine except
that he uses a different workgroup name and he specifies his internal
interface for use with SMB. (interfaces = 192.168.0.0/24 with his subnet
being 192.168.0).

2. My main Linux box has one NIC and at the time of installation I did not
have a printer to configure.

III) Here are the problems that I ran into:
1. On my brother's system I could connect with Windows ME and Samba on my
Linux box, but after making three connections, I could make no more. Also
the Windows 98 box could see the server, but could not access it.

2. On my system at my place (as opposed to my brother's) I could get Windows
ME to connect to my Linux box, but I could not get Windows 98 to connect to
my Linux box. (Different Linux boxes, slightly different config files, and a
different Windows 98 machine. Neither Windows 98 machines had problems
before related to Samba.)

IV) All of problems listed above went away when I went back a revision.

V) The smb.conf files should be attached. (I attached mine first.) Please
note that we do have smb.passwd files set up. I even destroyed and redid my
brother's when we started having problems even though I didn't think that it
would do anything and I proved myself right. (Logic being if Windows ME can
log in then Windows 98 should, but I can't think of anything better to do.)

VI) It seems to me that before I go much further into my printer
configuration that I should really resolve the Samba file services portion of
the problem. When I browsed through the FAQs that you pointed me to, the
CUPS updates looked somewhat interesting, but I did not see anything that
affected me in the Samba update.

VII) I posted a message after the one that you responded to, but here is the
recap anyway: I eventually got CUPS printing to work through Samba. What I
did was to not only switch to 'raw' mode, but also to get rid if the -P
option. ('print command = lpr-cups -o raw # using client side printer
drivers.' instead of 'print command = lpr-cups -P 0 -o raw # using client
side printer drivers.') During this entire period I had my printer named lp.

VIII) I am not really sure what constitutes as a 'Generic Postscript Driver'
For Windows 98/ME. I remember a few years back I used the generic postscript
driver under Linux to get RH 5.0 (brand new revision back then) to talk to an
HP 5000M Color over the school LAN :-)

Also ensure that you're not trying to use /dev/cu(x) (these device points are
now
or soon will be redundant) or /dev/ttyS0 (Com1 for Windows) this last because
it's
most likely that whatever your mousetype - it's going to be linked to
/dev/ttyS0.

My system for Nescape mail is to go to /home/nsmail (or where ever your
current mail is stored) and remove the summary files and then set Netscape
to read from that mail directory.

I've just moved from LM7.0 to 7.1 after 59 practise installs! and I've used
this
method each time.

I'm not sure if this will work with Ver 6 but it's certainly worked with
various
versions of Netscape on Win95/96/MacOS and Linux.

Hi Michael,

I see someone else has already recommended the 8.11 update. It's a good
idea; support for spam blocking and many other things are much improved.
:) But I'm guessing that you're rather new to sendmail and possibly Linux
without previous background in Unix. Logical, since this is the list for
new folks, so don't feel bad.

What I'm going to recommend you try FIRST is to start up Linuxconf and see
if you can successfully get sendmail set up the way you want it from
there. Configuring sendmail is difficult and confusing compiling from m4's
if you're not used to this kind of thing. Ultimately, it's the best choice
for configurability and there are lots of great docs at
http://www.sendmail.org/ and elsewhere online.

If you're willing to do a little more than that, get sendmail 8.11 and
also probably Webmin. You will probably need to install them from the
tar.gz files instead of rpms because you're working with an older kernel,
but someone else can correct me here if I'm wrong about that. Before you
can use Webmin with 8.11, you will need to compile your configuration
file. In Mandrake 7.2, there's a separate package for sendmail-cf that
includes some premade m4s and a moderately useful .mc file. Let us know if
you go this route and I will try to help you with that part.

I can't give you the step by steps for the version you're running,
unfortunately, because I never had that distro and my only <8.10
experience was on HP-UX. But you might also try http://www.google.com and
do a search for install-sendmail. This was a script written for installing
8.9 I believe that should probably work for you with your setup as is.

One final thought for you: you could try postfix instead of sendmail. I
don't have a lot of personal experience with it but I know people who like
it very much because it is easier to configure and maintain for them than
sendmail and is fairly secure without jumping through some of the more
elaborate configuration hoops that are possible with sendmail.

Okay, this is fairly long and I don't know if I've helped get you any
further along. Let us know where you go next or what questions you still
have. :)

Re: [newbie] So far, how's it going with the downloadable ISO?

With the iso you can still mess up your partition table by making three
primary and one "linux extended" partition and ignoring error messages. You
can also kill 3D acceleration during video selection in expert mode by
selecting a color depth other than 16-bit (misconfigured acceleration).

And if you want to do a boot disk or an autoinstall disk, format your
floppies beforehand. The formatting program used depends on the drive
reporing the capacity of the mounted media and the newest floppies are too
cheap for that, even on supposedly reputable computers.
