[newbie] piping directory filelist to tar for extraction, how?

2001-01-27 Thread TY

This is driving me crazy, i've read the man and info files for tar, and
read what little info I could find on pipes.

I have a bunch of filename.tar.bz2 files in a directory that I wish to
unzip and extract all at once.

It doesn't appear that tar lets one use wildcards with -xf, at least to
do what I need. So I'm trying to pipe my file list to tar -xvy

Tried

(ls | grep "*.bz2") | tar -xvyf -

(ls | grep "*.bz2") | tar -xvy

ls | grep "*.bz2" | tar -xvy

ls | grep "*.bz2" | tar -xvyf

bunzip2 *bz2 | tar -xvv

and about 15 more variations thereof, I must be an idiot.

Can someone shed some light?

thank you [:)]

[newbie] Bell answering service and dial-up internet connection

2001-01-27 Thread Pavel Zubkov

Hi to everyone! I was wondering if someone could help me out. Recently
I started using 7.0 Mandrake. The problem I have is : I have a Bell
answering service. If there is a message waiting to be picked up there
is a bisy signal instead of the dial tone. Is there any way to override
the search for the dialtone before the modem starts dialing.? If
someone could help me out that will be super.
Thanx
Paul

Marcia,

I have received a notice that @Home is upgrading their databases. There
is a good chance that they are working on them. I don't remember the
entire message - as I was in Windose. Now that I'm back in Linux, the
email notice mentioned that email will either be interrupted or be
completely down either today or tomorrow.

Here's one for you.

Log in as root, and type up something simple in AbiWord. Save it to

Next, log in as user. Open the same file and add a couple of lines to

Does it crash?

[newbie] Netscape Messenger problems

2001-01-27 Thread marcia

Dear All, I have Linux Mandrake 7.2 and have been using Netscape. Since
last night I can send out mail but not receive. I checked with Cox
Cable, my internet server and they said the problem was not from their
end. I can use the internet but not receive mail. Then this afternoon
for about 5 hours my mail started to come in. I thought everything was
fine but again a few hours ago I discovered I cannot receive mail again.
I have had 7.2 since it first came out and this never happened before.
Does anyone have any ideas about this? Any help will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks, Marcia

[newbie] Wireless Bridge & Cable Modem

2001-01-27 Thread kinpoonc

Hello,

Please pardon me if this has been posted before.

I'm connected to the Internet via a cable modem. Instead of a wired Bridge
(eg, SMC's Barricade) I would like to install a Wireless equivalent (with
NAT, Firewall, single IP, etc).

Has anyone gotten any such device to work properly? If so, may I know which
brand and model?

Thanks very much.

 Wayne,

Try looking for Kernel 2.2.16-10. I found it by way of the Linux
Hardware Database. The version referred to there is in the SuSE
7.0 ftp site (I'm running SuSE, not Mandrake). When I tried the
boot image given there my installer hung, probably because the
DVD drive and boot HD (on the regular IDE dontroller) got
bollixed up somehow trying to run at EIDE66. The stock boot disk worked
better, then I installed the new Kernel rpm and the UDMA 100
controller and disks work fine. I did try installing Makdrake 7
on this machine, but that was when I had some bad RAM
and nothing worked right, so I can't really compare the distros
on this issue. With the 2.2.16-10 installed and UDMA enabled,
and a 1GHx Athlon, it is quick, very, very quick.

You need to manually install the DHCP package.
It is not installed by default.

It is not installed by default.

Re: [newbie] should i get 7.2 over 7.1?

2001-01-27 Thread Mark Weaver

Vic,

Yes...use the URL that Roman posted, only take one the "/" (front slashes)
cause theres a spot in the URL where there are two and should only be one.
I think he was eating expresso beans again.

Your system sounds a lot like mine. Chris's rpm's are good ones and will
treat your system well. I haven't had any trouble at all with the rpm's
that he's posting to the server. In fact, I stopped having trouble when I
started using his packages.

There are likely going to be a couple of packages that when you run the
test on the packages before you do the actualt install you will be
needing. Those will be egcs-1.1.2-40mdk.i586.rpm and
egcs-libstdc++-1.1.2-40mdk.i586.rpm. These two packages you will be able
to find in the dir just above the one that the packages for KDE2.1beta2
are located in. Do NOT take any packages from anywhere else and add or use
with Chris's packages. If you do I can guarentee you will have trouble.

I found out the hard way and scrambled my eggs but good. Since I've used
Chris's packages though I haven't had a lick of trouble.

If you run into any trouble or need any more help getting these installed
feel free to email me offlist if you wish.

have fun and enjoy,

[newbie] Installed ML7.2, cannot find CD-RW and Floppy

2001-01-27 Thread surya

Hi:

I installed ML7.2 on a PIII box. The opted to install as a developer machine.
Everything went of smoothly.

However when I try to access a CD either by clicking on the CD-ROM icon on the
KDE desktop or by doing a "ls /mnt/cdrom" it says that there is an I/O error.

I looked at the mtab file and it had the following line:

/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount rw,fs=iso9660 dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

I tried removing that line, hoping to mount the cdrom manually later. However
when I rebooted the machine, the line was back in the /etc/mtab file.

Like the CD-RW drive (that is what I have), I am unable to access the floppy
drive as well.

Can some one please help me fix this problem

Thanks in advance.

Vic,

Here's the help file that I used:

If you want to upgrade KDE 2 to KDE2 Beta 2, download the files from the
following link:

http://atik.ciril.fr/pub/linux//mandrake-devel/unsupported/i586/kde2.1Beta2

Step 1.
Log on as root and download the kde2.1Beta2 rpms. Copy the rpms to a
new folder i.e. kdebeta and save the folder in your root directory.

Step 2.
Log out of X and log on in "console mode"

Step 3.
Type in: cd Type in: rpm -Uvh --test *.rpm
If everything goes well, remove the -- test. The verbose command will
show if something is missing.
If you are missing certain rpm files or libraries, navigate back to that
ftp site and download the files.

Step 4.
Type in: rpm --rebuilddb
Give this some time and above all do not interrupt it.

Step 5.
Type in: update-menus -v
Give this time. D o not interrupt it.
Reboot you computer. That's it.

[newbie] Mandrake 7.2 not detecting RAM correctly

2001-01-27 Thread Salman H Butt

Hey,

Mandrake 7.2 has the wrong amount of RAM. During the install, it asked me to
put in how much I had, since it often makes an error detecting RAM. I put
'128', and after reading through the list, I realized I should have put '128
MB'. Is there any way for me to fix this? Is this kept in a file somewhere?
Thanks for the help.

Take care,

[newbie] connecting to a DHCP LAN

2001-01-27 Thread Salman H Butt

hey,

has anyone successfully connected to a LAN using DHCP to configure all your
settings? i've been trying with my 3Com 3c905b without any luck. whenever i
try to configure eth0 to use dhcp as its config mode in basic host
information (of linuxconf), it never saves my settings. that is, i put in
info under Adaptor 1 (set it for dhcp, pick eth0, and pick a kernel module).
i then leave and return, only to find the info i entered gone. and also,
when i quit linuxconf and go to activate changes, i get an error saying that
/usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd has taken more than 15 seconds. it asks me to skip the
command, abort the procedure, or kill linuxconf. i just hit skip. does
anyone have any suggestions on what may be going wrong? i should note that
on boot, when my computer tries to setup eth0, it reports a failure to get
an IP from the dhcp. the lights on my card are blinking, so there is a
connection, and the card works fine in windows 2000.

here's my system info:
First off, here's my system info:
AMD Ahtlon 550
Asus K7M Motherboard
Elsa Erazor X (Geforce 32MB SDR)
128MB RAM
Soundblaster live! value

Well-maybe, its just that I have been accused
of posting abuse to the list when it was my
secretaries, in the past.

If Rex makes me a promise to not post every little
blasted comment to the list when I am busy but
need someone to take some dictation.

I guess I have just had bad luck with finding
someone who would know well enough that you
don't type down everything your supe says,
when you say "scratch that" or "don't put that on"
or uses your machine like Allen did and got me a
bad rap with another list.

Well anyway I might give him another chance unless
he blows it again.

I had a similiar problem.

After uninstalling the default CUPS drivers and re-installing the updated
drivers everything worked fine.

Merely "upgrading" the existing RPM's did not work though.

It was not until I performed an uninstall then re-install that things
started working.

Curiously this also fixed my Samba printing problem as well.

Hi Dave...

I created a Linux install CD under Windows using Easy CD Creator a long time
ago and it was quite straightforward. I think all I had to do was
double-click on the ISO in the Explorer and Easy CD Creator "did the right
thing".

CD burning is not difficult in Linux, but it is different perhaps that what
your used to. If you can do the burn under Windows, it might get you of to a
better start.

Hmmm.. I bet you're right. That's not all I have to learn.I use
Nero for burning (which, it seems, has no association with ISO files) and
Direct CD for pocket writing. I have an old copy of Easy CD Creator
(Adaptec) and will download the upgrade so I can follow the instructions I
found this morning on the L-M site in a document called "How to burn a
Mandrake CD from an iso9660 file under Windows? [By Laurent Daniel

This is the reason...you only see one file with an ISO
extension...
it is because you NEVER actually burned it correctly...
instead ...you only copied the iso file to the CD...

[newbie] Double drat..

2001-01-27 Thread Dave Burrows

Hi, John and all;

Early this morning (about 4:11 am), I finished downloading the ISO files
that I began last Sunday evening. It took only 5.5 days to download both
ISO
files with my super duper speedy delivery dial-up connection. ;)

I tried to install this version of Linux-Mandrake, having been burned to CD
but am told by the installer that it doesn't appear to be a Linux-Mandrake
disk. After several attempts including 1 with the purchased CD (which
contains only a beta of KDE2.0 but which initializes correctly) I booted
back to Windows and looked at the purchased disk (showed a number of
directories as expected) and at the one I had just burned (contains no tree
nor even 1 directory, only the ISO file.. which is exactly the correct size
as compared to what I downloaded.)

I decided that I better test the install boot (floppy) disk I made,
thinking that it might be pointing to something it can't find on the CD.
(by the way, the CD device I used to try to install either disk is the
writer not the
CD-ROM; everything works fine with the purchased disk but not the one I
burned) In my BIOS, i changed the boot order to boot from the the cd
device,
then C:\ then A:\. On reboot, I read that CD failed and it booted to C:\.
I tried both CD devices with the same failure resulting.

What must I do to make this file function? A rhetorical question: 4.5
years ago when I was totally new to Windows (had only ever used a DOS
machine before that), I never had this much trouble with that OS nor since;
why do I want this one so much? Rhetoric off, rant on: why IS this such a
bugger to install and configure for someone who is not a programmer and
'only' a user? Wouldn't Linux be more likely to do some serious damage to
the MS market if it were a little more user friendly? Rant off.

Tenacity reigns; I still want Linux. Any suggestions anyone?

[newbie] Perplexing Soundcard problem with Mandrake 7.1

2001-01-27 Thread Richard Kleeman

I am having a tough time getting my soundcard to work under Linux. First
of all I installed Mandrake 7.1 because I have a Promise UDMA/66 IDE
controller which most other releases of Linux do not recognise (I tried
Redhat 7.0 and Mandrake 7.2 without luck). So Mandrake 7.1 worked and most
of the hardware was recognised but the soundcard (Soundblaster Live!
Value) has been a real problem. I used Hardrake and it picked up the card
but all the parameters were set at -1 and no sound was playing on the
test. I tried sndconfig and again it recognised the card but no sound
played. I tried the commercial OSS driver (emu10k1) and something happened
which looked reasonable in the /dev/sndstat file but again no sound. The
support guys there suggested I needed to check cable connections but since
the card works fine under Windoze I am sure that is not a problem. I can
play wav files using the OSS driver and the mixer seems OK just no sound.
I checked the IRQ and it matches that used under Windoze. I have tried
both the regular emu10k1 driver and the alsa drivers without luck. I am
beginning to think that the ide recognition under Mandrake 7.1 did
something to the soundcard recognition (I read something wierd about
UDMA/66 patches under 2.2.x Linux kernels saying that for Mandrake 7.1 the
patch `breaks` recognition of certain other hardware. Any leads would be
greatly appreciated- this problem is very frustrating as everything else
about Linux has more than lived up to my expectations. System Details:

[Fwd: [newbie] A7V and dual boot]

2001-01-27 Thread abe

I'm trying to help my brother get a dual boot going with mandrake and
win98se on an A7V. His windows drive is an ATA 100 drive on the primary
ATA100 controller. His mandrake drive is an ata66 drive on the primary
ata66 drive. I can get mandrake to see the ATA100 drive by passing
ide2=0x8400,0x8002 ide3=0x7800,0x7402
to lilo at boot time. I've set lilo up to include that so that he can
mount/browse his windows drive from linux. However, I cannot figure out
how to configure lilo to successfully boot to the windows drive.

Has anyone done this or does anyone know how to do this? I read the
lilo man pages but I couldn't find an answer to my question.
Please help!

2001-01-27 Thread abe

hey wayne, let me be te first to say that you should turn off HTML mail
as it will enrage some otherwise perfectly coherent people to the point
of insanity. So, if you want to reach the widest possible group of
people for answers to your questions and generally be a good member of
the online community, send all your email as plain ASCII text.

As far as your motherboard goes, my first thought is that those
addresses might not be the ones that are actually in use on your
machine. If this is a dual boot machine you can find those I/O
addresses in the device mangler under windows. You use the first four
addresses and add 2 to the second and fourth. Lke this

8400-8407
8000-8003
7800-7807
7400-7403
yields

ide2=0x8400,0x8002 ide3=0x7800,0x7402

If those numbers are correct for your machine then I don't know what
your problem might be. I have limited experience with trouble shooting
ATA100 controllers on A7V's because I've been lucky so far

good luck!

Glad I could help Roman. After this week I'm hoping that my system has

I've been using KDE 1.1.2 themes pretty much exclusively. For what ever
reason the themes for KDE 2.x don't work at all.

Well Herbertfrom what you wrote above I can only guess that you
are trying to set up your modem in linux on the equivalent of com port
5 because M$ windows indicates it is on com 5?

If this is true? it does not matter what windows calls it...I
have a PCI modem that windows M$ w95a shows on com 5.

In MDK 7.2 I have it set on ttyS3 and it works greatforget
what windows shows...just make sure that you have no conflicts with
the IRQ... I had mine on with a USB controller and it errored "modem
is busy"..until I switched PCI slots.

While in root, copy all of the rpm files to the same folder i.e. Temp.
Next:

Click on Konsole and type in:
Type in: cd Temp

Type in: rpm -Uvh *.rpm
Press the key

Type in: update-menus -v
Press the key

Reboot you computer.

What you're looking to set up is printcap using (I suppose)
postscript (a printer font -- there's more involved, but I don't
know a lot about printers).

> It is an Epson Stylus Scan 2000, and I have tried the main

Hmm. I don't know this printer at all, but I'd fooled with a
couple of different DeskJets before finally having success in
lm7.2 using Cups with a LazerJet. First, I'd recommend checking
the (horribly outdated) hardware compatibility list. Weather you
find it there or not, go from there to the Printer HowTo. You'll
find them both at:

http://www.linuxdoc.org

I can only remember from having read the howto long ago that
most printers can be made to function -- at least minimally --
via postscript. It's just a matter of a little file editing &
all the info is in the howto for copy & paste.

list of files for XFree 86 4.0.2.
Now what do I do with them.
The support directions said to use rpm -Uvh with each package. I get the
error message: such a file or directory doesn't exist.

Can I get some clear directions on what to do?

So lost

Vic,

Have you done any of the KDE updates from the batch that Chris has posted
to the list about? Since coming from KDE2.0 to KDE2.1beta2 I've noticed
Konqueror's stability increasing. That might be a help if you haven't
installed the upgrades yet.

Roman,

You will have to "add" that theme to the lineup in theme manager for root
to use this theme. The themes don't load globally.

Roman,

To tell you the truth the older KDE themes work TONS better then the
themes put together for KDE2.0 and above. In fact, that's all I've been
using are the themes for previous versions of KDE. These work great!

enjoy...

RE: [newbie] 3c905b NIC drivers not installing

2001-01-27 Thread Salman H Butt

It was suggested to me that I get the latest stable kernel which would have
support for the 3c905b. Does anyone know which version that would be and
where I would get the source? Or how I could find this information?

Thanks,

Subject: [newbie] 3c905b NIC drivers not installing

Hey,

First off, here's my system info:
AMD Ahtlon 550
Asus K7M Motherboard
Elsa Erazor X (Geforce 32MB SDR)
128MB RAM
Soundblaster live! value
3Com 3C905B NIC

I'm running Mandrake 7.2. Under Release of the KDE Configuration Panel, it
says 2.2.17-23mdk (which I suppose refers to the linux kernel).

I was trying to get onto my school's network through DHCP. I read through
some messages on the list and found out that Mandrake did not come with
drivers for the 3C905B. So, I went to 3Com's webpage and got the latest
drivers. I tried installing it, but when I did this, I got something like
"these drivers weren't made for this kernel. you will have to recompile
them". So using 3Com's readme.txt file, I tried compiling the 3c90x.c file
into an installable module. But then got a lot of errors. Any suggestions on
what I should do? Thanks a lot for the help.

Sincerely,
Salman

PS here is the compile command I used:

gcc -c
3c90x.c -O2 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strength-red
uce -pipe -m486 -align-loops=2 -malign-jumps=2 -malign-functions=2 -DCPU=486
 -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__

Thanks again.

If you want to upgrade KDE 2 to KDE2 Beta 2, download the files from the
following link:

http://atik.ciril.fr/pub/linux//mandrake-devel/unsupported/i586/kde2.1Beta2

Step 1.
Log on as ?root? and download the kde2.1Beta2 rpms. Copy the rpms to a
new folder
i.e. kdebeta and save the folder in your root directory.

Step 2.
Log out of X and log on in console mode

Step 3.
Type in: cd Type in: rpm -Uvh --test *.rpm
If everything goes well, remove the -- test. If you are missing certains
files or libraries, naviagte back to that ftp site and download the
files

Step 4.
Type in: rpm --rebuilddb
(Give this one some time)

Step 5.
Type in: update-menus -v
(Give this one some time)
Reboot you computer. That?s it.

[newbie] Plustek/Silitek scanners

2001-01-27 Thread Meph Istopheles

  Morning,

Now it's my turn to ask about scanners.

I have two I've yet to get working in either Linux or W2k (I
may be onto something with the Silitek in W2k, but I'm waiting on
a response from someone on that).

In any case, in lm7.2, everything, of course, is rpm. Trouble
is, the module for the Plustek (parallel) requires first
installing the module into the sane directory & then recompiling
sane. Uh, is there a way to do that with an rpm? Otherwise,
which tar version of sane would I get? The doc on the module
doesn't go into that.

Then, for the Silitek (usb), I've come by so little (Silitek
doesn't really know what support is, & their site doesn't open
any longer).

Anyone know how I could get either (or both) of these working?

Only a clue, sorry. I'd recently been at postfix's Web site &
am pretty sure I'd seen something about this in their support
docs...maybe a faq. I think though...

> Do I have to setup something in the postfix configs to allow

...it's something to do with your loopback. I've read of
something which I think was simillar with sendmail that if
in...um, I can't think of the file, but it lists only loopback &
host name in /etc (/etc/hosts?). Sometimes the order of the two
is wrong.

As for a file which ~might~ show something wrong, try
/etc/postfix/main.cf

Not meaning to butt in but if the modem in question is PCI and it is on Com5
in Windows then it needs to be set to ttyS3 in kppp. Cat /proc/pci should be
run, the appropriate setserial commands issued, and /etc/rc.d/rc.local
edited to reflect the settings.

Hi guys, I hope someone can help me with this problem. I am trying to
perform a virus scan on my system, but when I enter (AvpLinux -- / * )I
recieve a message from the terminal that the antivirus database was not
found. When I install LM 7.2 the installation created a new directory for the
databse (/usr/lib/avp-linux/database) I check the avp.ini and the path
for the database was (../database) so I edit the avp.ini to point to the
directory (/usr/lib/avp-linux/database) but I am recieving the same
message. I did updated my database and extracted to the same path for the
database, any suggestions? Does the changes become efecctive immediatly or
I have to wait for the cron to update the changes?
PS Please forgive If I am not making much sense but I am new to linux.:))
(btw With all it's minor difficulties ,I am luv with it , Thanks LM team !
Great job in the installation process, it was a smooth ride..;))

Re: [newbie] Win2000 Partition

Note that it is _not_ recommended to enable NTFS write access.

I always used to use a small FAT partition as a transfer area between linux
and NT.
