Re: [newbie] Correct NIC module for Realtek8029?
It is currently set up as ne2k-pci but I can't get it set up to work. The @home workorder has the following: NIC Provider: @HOME: ISA I think when it was installed last year they told me they had to use a "shared" slot. Maybe that's why it's being detected as PCI? eth0 doesn't even show up when I run ifconfig. I'm gonna switch to the ISA module and give it a try. Thanks for the info. Any hint on filters? I'm using S450 which I've read is really a BJC-6000 with a new fancier case. I think I may try Lpr since mine is not retaining the format from the word processor through the printing process. So any info about the filtering process would help as I've never had to define them manually before. Well, what's the alternative? The 440xx are 66 mhz buses (or maybe a 100). Actually the only problem I've ever had with mine was when 2.2.17 didn't support agpgart for it. Once the new kernel hit. Stable, fast, no probs. I know the problems with the i820 and agree with you there, the i810 is fairly limited, but why the distain for the i815? -s On Wednesday 31 January 2001 02:45 am, you wrote: 'Tell ya right now, 810 (actually i8) is in the 'should > not have' category. Re: [newbie] hosts.allow/deny configuration
Dear Jason and friends: Here is my configuration of /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow. Please not that it's in all caps and make sure you configure the right file. And, of course, you have to be root to configure it. 1) [sher@sher sher]$ cat /etc/hosts.deny # # hosts.denyThis file describes the names of the hosts which are # *not* allowed to use the local INET services, as decided # by the '/usr/sbin/tcpd' server. # # The portmap line is redundant, but it is left to remind you that # the new secure portmap uses hosts.deny and hosts.allow. In particular # you should know that NFS uses portmap! # ALL : ALL [sher@sher sher]$ 2) [sher@sher sher]$ cat /etc/hosts.allow # # hosts.allow This file describes the names of the hosts which are # allowed to use the local INET services, as decided # by the '/usr/sbin/tcpd' server. # # ALL : LOCAL [sher@sher sher]$ What this means is obvious: In the first example, everybody is denied access to your system. In the second example, only local users (i.e. yourself) are allowed to use your system. This, I understand, is the most basic way to secure your system, and it will handle most security threats. I hope one of our gurus can elaborate on this. Benjamin -- Benjamin and Anna Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net

[newbie] dual processor detection?
Hello, I am pretty new to the linux environment, and I have a question. I have installed linux mandrake 7.2 and updated the kernel to 2.4, with SMP enabled. I am using a dual celeron motherboard, hence the SMP. I was wondering if there is any way of explicitly telling if the dual processor support is enabled. My hard drake lists only one processor under the processor type, and that is the only indication I know of. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you Mike Berezowski _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

I almost hate to recommend this 'cause it's so damn easy to make a good set of firewall rules without knowing anything about what it's all about ;) If it's any comfort, I'm lost an' get'n lost'er, the new 2.4.x kernels use iptables, an' I don't have a clue as to how ipchains (2.2.x) gets it done, much less iptables, but scanners can't touch me :) http://www.sdesign.com/cgi-bin/fwtest.cgi?APPLY=Scan+Me+Now > As well, if there are any other things that I should do to secure my > machine, please let me know. Yes, again. Add a sentry, http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/security/portsentry1.html ... and not to be remiss, check your logs regularly. Re: [newbie] How do i configure my xfree86
Oh my. Then that's definately your problem. Best method would be if there are jumpers or dipswitches on the mobo. If none, disable it in the bios and make sure if there is an entry for first video init, set it for pci/agp rather than on-board. You must disable the onboard before you can use the add-on. Do you have the owner's manual for your mobo? If so, look in there and it should tell you if there are jumpers and how to disable on-board video, audio, ethernet, etc. If not, you can go to the manufacturer's web site and probably find that info. Even if you have the jumpers or switches, you'll need to know what to change. -s On Monday 29 January 2001 10:20 pm, you wrote: > all i did to disable it was uninstall the drivers for it and disable it > in all hardware profiles. Since you've just started using Linux, I'm going to assume you don't intend to use it as any kind of server. That makes this rather easy actually. Your /etc/hosts.deny should be nothing but the following line... ALL : ALL (Lines starting with # are okay, too.) And your /etc/hosts.allow should be blank or just comment (#) lines. To be even safer, try running ntsysv and unchecking any services you don't need. Typically, amd, anacron, atd, autofs, crond, cups (if you use it for printing), drakfont, gpm, harddrake, ipchains, keytable, kheader, kudzu, netfs (if you need NFS access - not to be confused with nfs, the server), network, numlock, sound, syslog, and usb. [newbie] hosts.allow/deny configuration
I just started using linux meaningfuilly. I would like to make my machine as secure as possible. The first thing that I would like to do is configure my hosts.allow and hosts.deny files. I am not exactly sure as to how to configure them though. Could someone please send me an example or give me a few good ideas of what I should do? As well, if there are any other things that I should do to secure my machine, please let me know. Thank you, Jason D. Williard

Thanks 'sndconfig' should be run as root ONLY from a level 3 terminal. That means that X (-Windows) must NOT be running. This is very important, and most otherwise well meaning people neglect to mention it. So how to get to a level 3 prompt ? Well, as with most things in Linux, there's lot'sa ways, a couple are: If you're booting up, type 'linux 3'. If X is already runnin, mash . With both, you'll need to be root. If you're user, logout, then log back in as root. Then run 'sndconfig', answer the questions. Done. If this isn't successful, the next step is to admit to yourself that you've got less than desirable hardware. Your only alternative here is to learn somethin about the hardware you have ... and what you should have. 'Tell ya right now, 810 (actually i8) is in the 'should not have' category. Well, yeah. Either, if the file's large (which it likely isn't), send it as an attachment. Or, as the info isn't likely much, open in your favourite text editor & copy & paste into the e-mail. The reason I don't hold much hope for you is that though some may have received responses to e-mails to MandrakeSoft, I've received nothing for those I'd sent due to things not found by HardDrake or the one I'd sent for something else from their site. Dunno, but you may be better off reading all you can find on your reluctant hardware & maybe seeking help here &/or subscribing to the Linux@eGroups (now Linux@YahooGroups) & posting there. [newbie] NFS Not supported
Hello: I was trying, once again, to setup NFS between two Linux boxes. I've tried several times to make this work (they tell me it's easy) and now I have a very important reason to do so now. My boss wants to see Linux in action and part of that means on a network. I'm practicing here at home. Both machines are networked and can share the internet connection of RIKER. I consider RIKER the server and LONDO client. All are Linux Mandrake 7.2. I set up RIKER to serve to the others. RIKER's export file: /mnt/cdrom (ro) /mnt/zip(rw) /home londo(rw) I'm following a book here so not real sure this is as it should look. The FSTAB entry looks like this on LONDO: riker:/home homeNFS I save the changes on LONDO and then type: mount riker:/home then I get the error "NFS not supported by kernel." Souldn't this be built into the kernel. I've added the NFS utilities RPM and PORTMAPPER and nothing seems to help. I'm at a loss and need to get going before my D-Day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If more information is need I will be glad to give it, and if someone would like to help off-list, I would appreciate that even more. :) Riker

Re: [newbie] Is it so much to ask---
If you're talking about using Lpr it will indeed. At this point in Cups' developement, as far as Canons are concerned at least, Lpr is still the method of choice. At least for those who wish to retain more then 70% of the sanity they were born with while they're still under the age of 80! Please don't get me wrong. I think Cups is a good thing...as long as you're not using, or trying to use a Canon printer. Where HP is concerned you can't beat Cups with a stick. Not even a pair of sticks. Drum sticks that is...and you know who you are! Anyway, I firgure it this way. Those of us that are hell bent on sticking with our Canon printers are just going to have to stick with using Lpr until Mandrake version 8.1 is in full release. That would be at least by Summer 2002 easy. By then Cups should be a killer printer support platform. ACtually I think Canon should have stuck with making Cameras and never gotten into the printer market. And I should have my head examinded for friggin buying one. After this it will be HP for me...or an Epson. Now THOSE are printers. O, and by the way. You can very easily and quickly install a printer using Linuxconf to print with Lpr. Only thing is you have to make sure that Cups, Qtcups, Kups and anything else C,K-ups in it is totally uninstalled from the system before you will be able to install and use a printer with LPR. That just da way it is. rpm -qa | grep cups Issue the above command in a terminal to see if you have Cups of any kind installed on the system. This will catch qtcups as well. then issue this command to uninstall those packages from the system. rpm -e -force *use the -force argument only if necessary *where is place the name of the package listed from the rpm query. *package name MUST entered exactly as it appears in the output rpm -qa |grep Kups Do everything for Kups packages that you did for Cups packages. The procedure is the same. Then Open Linuxconf->Miscellaneous services->Printer->Add/Edit printers->Add. You will be prompted to create a printer when you do you will then define that printers properties. When you click on that printers name in the little box you can further define that printer. There is a panel with 3 tabs across the top. On the first tab you define the max file size. On the second tab you choose the device: /dev/lp0 /dev/lp1 /dev/lp2 custom Lp0 is the typical and default choice. 3 and last tab is where you choose the printers filters, resolution, paper size, and quality. The most important of these though is the filter. Choose the wrong filter and you won't see your printer printing...anything! That's really all there is to setting up print services using Lpr and Linuxconf. Quick...cool...and clean! And the friggin thing works with my Canon!!! -- Mark "If you don't share your concepts and ideals, they end up being worthless," "Sharing is what makes them powerful." Mark, I noticed that the file extensions appear to be different. I'll log in as 'root' but I was wondering if I could download some the earlier themes from the previous KDE versions. Will they still work? The search on the kdethemes.org isn't too hot. I was trying to look up themes for KDE2 and KDE2.1 but I could not find any. Any ideas? Re: [newbie] Problems with GLX for LM 7.2
Hi, You didn't mention it in your message, but did you modify your XF86Config and XF86Config-4 files by replacing "nv" with "nvidia"? Based on the output of lsmod it looks like X is still loading the old nv driver and not the new one. Also I have the 0.9-6 drivers working in 7.2 with the 2.2.17 kernel just fine, after I made the modifications from evil3d. But my PC has a Via Apollo Pro chipset. [newbie] Mozilla question
Heeyyy, I just noticed Mozilla is on my computer. I never installed it myself. But there is it, a new addition to my pan's enabled actions. I couldn't resist the urge to use it when highlighting a link and it looks pretty cool. My question is: do you suppose it came with the new kde2.1beta2? It's vs. 0.5, so what the heck, I guess I'll download the newer version. -s

Hi, after a disasterous attempt to install kde2.0 i decided i had to reinstall linux mandrake 7.1 from CD again. in an attempt to keep everything in /home i only formatted the root partition and then reinstalled MD7.1. everything seemed to befine until it was time to boot up, all i get is "stage1" then it stalls .. usually grub boots up at the stage 2 point but no matter how often i try to get it to work it always comes up with the same stage1 then it stops does anyone know what could cause this to happen... btw i also tried to install lilo but its the same? [newbie] Why does my laptop always switches off even when not instructed to?
I have seen many posts on the archive, but could not find any response to this. I have disabled APM from the BIOS, and disabled it from X, from everywhere. But the machine goes off, I don't know by which magic ?? This is really annoying, because on the way, it completely freezes the system. In this case, the only thing I can do is to force power off, reboot, of cource fsck. My current fix : I force from X a suspend after 20 minutes, in this case it's doing fine, I can resume the machine. However, when I am connected to a LAN, it's not even able to restart correctly the network interface, I have to do it manually and try several times at once ! I first suspected my Hardware, but apparentely it's not, since other people seem to have the same problem on other machines with this distrib (7.2). I have a laptop Fujitsu E Series. Sorry to say that, but in this particular case, Linux mandrake (7.2) is unuseable. Don't tell me that I have to go back to that other operating system, since it has not this problem at all ?? Or should I throw away mandrake and try another distrib (since even when you buy it, official support does not even dare to answer, that another thing really annoys me even more). Patrick Diligent

Nope. Be a slob. Change the timeout to 16 seconds and forget about it :) - Original Message - From: nlilly To: Newbie Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2001 5:24 AM Subject: [newbie] CD burning mystery... OK. So I've installed 7.2 on a machine that previously ran 7.1. It has installed an ide Mitsume 2/4x CD rom burner. After causing the the kernal to run the burner under scsi emulation, the cd burner now works! One issue, however. After burning the cd, and during the post-fixing stage of cdrecord, the drive experiences an input/output error which locks up the drive until it times out 6 minutes later. Then the drive is fine and the cd is finished and fine. [newbie] 2nd H/D
On top of my previous question about LM 7.2 install, there is a possibility that I will buy a second H/D . In that case I will use the entire H/D for Linus and the other one for Win. Is there any way I can reclaim the space that Linux used to be on H/D 1 and make it Fat 32 system without having a separate partition within windows, and without loosing any data from my Win partition??
[newbie] 7.2 Installation
Hi there. I have in my box both Win and Mandrake 7.1 at the same H/D. I want to install 7.2 and according to a lot of messages it is better to do a fresh install rather than upgrading. How do I go about this?? I start the installation of 7.2 select new install and when I get to the partition side I just select the existing partition and formate it?? Can you please refresh my memory???

Re: [newbie] How do i configure my xfree86
yeah, I've tried XF86config. I've looked into the mobo and jumpers there are only for resetting bios nothing about a jumper disabling i810. One question I have is BusID. I looked under the documentation and it says something about BusID. It is not very clear on how they setup "BusID "PCI:0:0:0" I thought well the card is in PCI slot #4. so I had it like this --> "BusID "PCI:4:0:0"" still it can't find device. Maybe I should download the latest DrakXtools and install that. maybe they fixed a bug on the XFdrake on 7.2. [newbie] Problem with http links
Hi all, When I click on a link in an email message, Netscape opens up and displays the web page, but all the links in the web page are pointing to a local file on my box instead of the proper file on the web site. Let me give an example to try and better explain; I recently clicked on the link http://www.linuxprinting.org/suggested.html that was included in an email message from the list. Netscape displays the 'Suggested Printer...' page. If I click the 'how to buy a printer' link from here, Netscape points to file:/home/andy/.kde/share/apps/kfmexec/tmp/howto/printers.html instead of http://www.linuxprinting.org/howto/printers.html. [newbie] gnome, enlightenment and epplets (init script?)
I'm running Gnome and Enlightenment and I'm trying to figure out how to control which epplets are started automatically when I reboot/restart Enlightenment. Is there a config file I can edit somewhere? I'm trying to fix an annoying behaviour my Enlightment has with regard to epplets. Whenever I start an epplet, that epplet is added to the list of epplets that get started automatically when Enlightenment restarts. So right now I have many instances of the E-Mounbox and the E-CPU-flame-thingy starting automatically every time I restart enlightenment. As near as I can tell, starting an epplet from the user menu seems to add a call to that epplet to some kind of Enlightenment session init script somewhere, but I can't seem to find where. Here's some version information from my system, in case it matters: Distribution: Linux Mandrake release 7.0 (Air) O.S. Release: 2.2.14-15mdk (686i) O.S. Version: #1 (1/4/2000) Gnome Version: 1.0.51 Enlightenment Version: 0.16.3 (11/22/1999) Any ideas? I checked the newbie list archives for this one, but I didn't find anything. If this issue has been covered already, I apologise. Thanks! - Curt Oh, btw, does anyone know where can I find some good user docs for enlightenment? www.enlightenment.org doesn't seem to have much. [newbie] Printer sharing question
I have a Windows98 box connected to a LM7.2 Box over a crossover Cat5. I connect to the internet from the Linux Box. I can happily surf using both the machines. Unfortunately I bought a Lexmark Z22, which works only with Windows. How do I set up the printer on the Windows box, so that I can print stuff from the Linux box. Thanks Surya

[newbie] Startup services
I am looking into which startup services I should enable/disable via the Startup Services section of DrakConf. I am not too sure on whether I need certain services and their descriptions (as given in DrakConf) are not too helpful. The corresponding section in mandrakeuser.org doesn't seem to have been updated for LM7.2. I shall list my services below and append an asterisk (*) to services that I have enabled. anacron * crond * cups * drakfont * gpm * harddrake inet ipchains * keytable * kheader * kudzu ldap linuxconf * mcserv netfs network * ntpd numlock * oki4daemon random * rawdevices sound * syslog * usb xfs * I have turned off several services, including harddrake and kudzu (since my hardware setup is OK). I don't think I need netfs, since I don't use NFS, SMB, or NCP. I am not too sure about inet, keytable (I have an US keyboard), kheader, numlock (is it really worth having a daemon just to turn num lock on?), and rawdevices. Drakfont slows my startup time by almost ten seconds, and I'm not sure whether I need it. I have converted my Windos fonts via Drakfont to be used by Linux, but do they really need to be checked every time I boot? Similarly, linuxconf slows my startup by a noticable degree, but I assume that I need this (I do use Linuxconf, the app). Thanks for any help. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan. Re: [newbie] Updating KDE 2 to KDE 2 Beta 2
In sort: KDE 2.1 Beta 2 is great! All I did was download the RPMs and install them all at once using gnorpm. After running "update-menus -v" and then rebooting, all was well. Konqueror and Kmail are a bit quicker and more responsive than my previous installation (CVS 20010115). Stability has also improved. I can't wait for the final version! P.S. Does anyone know if there's an official release date for GNOME 1.4? I hear it's due some time in February. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan. "There are two major products that come from Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. Re: [newbie] Problems with GLX for LM 7.2
If I remember correctly, they are for the 2.4.0 kernel. (They got released like two days after I used a patch for the 0.9-5 and installed them, so...) If your using 2.2.17 or 2.2.18, and don't have the the i815 mobo you should probably try the 0.9-5 drivers. If you have an i815 mobo, you will have to install the 2.4.0 kernel for agpgart support. -s On Tuesday 30 January 2001 07:54 am, you wrote: > Hello, List: > > I am hoping someone can help me install these Nvidia > drivers. Re: [newbie] Printer recommendations
Dear Lanman and friends: I HIGHLY recommend Okidata's Okipage 10e LASER PRINTER. I got it from http://www.buy.com for nearly half price ($260 instead of $400). Brand-new. Toners are also only half-price, around $16 (sixteen dollars!) and last 2,000 pages (that's two thousand except the first toner which comes free with the printer, which lasts only 1,000 pages). Prints black on whitel ONLY. If you don't need color, I (let me repeat) VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND this printer for its quality, reliability, etc. And, it is supported out of the box by LM72. Don't waste your money on deskjet printers when you can get a laserprinter that's superior and only a few dollars more. Actually, when you consider the toner, it's much cheaper. And you can use both standard xerox paper and laser quality paper. This GREAT printer was recommended to me by one of our gurus, Ramon Gandia, and that recommendation speaks for itself. I have had my Okipage for nearly two years now. Flawless! Benjamin P. S.
