I second this, if anyone knows of anything please let me know as well.
Something like CUCME open source would be nice. It must be GPL to go into the

Yup! There are some additional files. Mandrake Update does not install new
packages that have been added. Here, do me a favor and drop to a command line
and do:

rpm -qa|grep kde
rpm -qa|grep koffice
rpm -qa|grep qt2

and post the results. This will help us figure it out. Please post to the

I teach some classes for new Linux users. Here is what I tell them for a 5
Gig drive. (OK, I know I am about to be corrected, flamed, etc for this but I
can handle it [sniff] - just remember this is a general suggestion and is not
written in stone).

Do NOT let the installer auto-partition. I have a different opinion about
putting /var onto it's own partition. Don't.

These are in order on how I recommend creating on a 5 gig drive:
/boot = 64 meg
Swap = 2 times the amount of physical memory in your machine. More if a
server (probably 4 times).
/ = 3.5 Gig
/home = remainder of all drive space.

This seems to let them do a full development install and it works.

(OK, let me have it!). Anyways, forgive me mailing list Gods, but if you are
near New Haven, CT USA check out the Mandrake Campus courses at:
http://www.innovationsw.com/training.

[newbie] Setting up NIC under 7.2

2001-02-03 Thread Rick Commo

Hardware:
AT Motherboard / 80MB ./ Cyrix 8x96 chip @ 233Mhz
D-Link DFE-530 TX+

Brand new installation went great except for graphics, which tested fine,
but on the reboot the screen was black. Booted as single and fixed that.

Now, how do I configure the DFE 530 TX+ for eth0? I've tried using
DrakConf/"Network and Internet Configuration". I picked the Via Rhine,
which this card uses. It says that it found one, and then goes away.
Actually it says it finds whatever NIC entry I click on for that matter.

I would like to get this up and running as eth0 using DHCP. Any ideas
welcome!

OK, I've sent in some info b$ on this and nothing works. Let me try it
again.
After numerous tries at setting up this printer nothing happens. Have
tried
PrinterDrake and linuxconf from root.

The most constant error message I receive is regarding lp0. Trying to
run tunelp
"tunelp lp0 -s" gives me "no such file or directory".

Trying to print from a program I get "unable to open parallel port
device file: no
such device"

Checking thru dmesg I do not find any reference to lp0/lp1 etc., a
printer or the
parallel port.

I figured after disabling Plug&Play in my Bios and receiving a previous
reply to
also reset my BIOS to ECP I did that using the AUTO option as well. HP
also says
that it recommends setting this printer up on ECP. Still nothing.

Why isn't lp0 recognized or setup. Where can I find the setup files.
Maybe I can
manually load it?

I've just updated KDE to 2.0.1 using Drake update, which has resulted in
the following problems:

   * I can start Kmix only from root. Starting from other accounts
generates the message "C-Media PCI" (my sound card is a C-Media
PCI) is invalid" or words to that effect. As I can start Kmix in
root I assume this is a file privalege issue, but which files?.
Also attempting to add this devise to Kmix from an account other

   *
   * desktop sounds in Gnome have defaulted to none for all users.
Further I cannot change this using the control centre. After I
change settings, they revert to no sound both for "sounds" and

I'm with you on that, Richard. But then, I don't have a "production"

regularly so I don't have to reset everything if I do a reinstall at the

Let me throw in a little more here. I may not have anything
really useful to add, but my confusing statements may clarify
something for someone (maybe even me). Let's start here:

We're looking at an anacron job. Looking at
/var/spool/anacron/cron.daily tells us only:

20010203

& that isn't the least bit helpful. Then
/etc/cron.daily/0anacron says:

anacron -u cron.daily

Nothing helpful here either.

Can't just delete it though -- it may be important.

> --
> slocate.db is a list of *.dll (obviously Windows files)Why?

> "udf,nfs,smbfs,ncpfs,proc,devpts,iso9660,usvdevfs" -e
> "/tmp,/var/tmp,/usr/tmp,/afs,/net"

Odd that your slocate.db would, if I understand you correctly,
only list the dll files in your Windows partition. This database
is supposed to list all the files on all filesystems on your
system. Mine does this.

We know that db2 is either ~the~ slocate database or is related
to it. We had to manually install slocate, so we have a use for
the locate command (one I use often). We ~could~ just remove the
software & delete the anacron job & be done with it, but, again,
we have a need for locate.

I should think that maybe if we could tell slocate to only do
ext2 instead of vfat partitons, we'd be set. Trouble is, as you
show above, there is nothing about any vfat or related fs -- only
smb, & I don't even have samba installed. What's more, mine
appears to be a little different than yours:

/usr/bin/slocate -u -f
"udf,nfs,smbfs,ncpfs,proc,devpts,iso9660,usbdevfs"

  Do you run samba, Jacqueline?

And what are udf, ncp? I assume file systems, but I'm not
familiar with them, though only the udf (of these two) are common
in both ours.

Again, this isn't helping. No offense to you Jacqeline -- I'm
attacking the coders (as I often do;-).

> At this point, I just want to get rid of the DB2 message!

Heh. If only coders used their own wares, we'd all be
happy:-).

I don't find it at all odd that root, etc have no
crontabs...though I remember in RedHat they had after first boot.
Mandrakesoft had evidently decided to put those jobs elsewhere &
I guess no user -- including root -- has a crontab till they
create one. Good or bad, I can't say, but I agree -- I want that
message to go away too.

You've done a lot of research here, but I'm not so sure it's
going to do us any good short of making you more aquainted with
how lm handles cron jobs (which I find more confusing that when
I'd fist started looking at cron docs to set up my first
fetchmail job back in RedHat).

Well, short of knowing that slocate runs daily & at any bootup
& that we have a need, the material we have available to us just
isn't helping us figure out how to fix it (though I know this
either wouldn't happen in other distros or that it'd be easier to
fix if it did). No complaints in this respect to Mandrakesoft,
as I've said before, I perfer this to RH, but what's the deal?
These cron entries aren't like anything I've seen before.

Maybe if we concentrate on how we get slocate to ignore our
Windows partitions...?

Jacqueline,

Let us start with your slocate problem first. Did you upgrade it to a version beyond
2.2-6mdk? I did and had the same problems. But if it isn't that, let us look at your
/etc/updatedb.conf which is basically what your mail is spitting out to you about:

slocate: this is not a valid slocate database:
  /var/lib/slocate/slocate.db
  --
slocate.db is a list of *.dll (obviously Windows files)Why?
Another file (/usr/bin/slocate.cron) is as follows:
 "udf,nfs,smbfs,ncpfs,proc,devpts,iso9660,usvdevfs" -e
  "/tmp,/var/tmp,/usr/tmp,/afs,/net"
  --
The following files (/var/spool/cron/ directory) consist of numbers that
don't seem to follow the date and time format:
 cron.daily -- 20010131
 cron.weekly -- 20010127
 cron.monthly -- 20010127
  --

Let us break this message down into three parts, first.

slocate: this is not a valid slocate database:
  /var/lib/slocate/slocate.db
  --

I have the same configuration and location as you but when I tried to access an
updated slocate rpm off of Mandrake-devel (slocate-2.4-1) I received the same errors.
Second part:

slocate.db is a list of *.dll (obviously Windows files)Why?
Why? Because it is accessing your windows partition as well as any other partition
filetype that is not being excluded like these: ("*" will wrap the filetypes I am
referring)
Another file (/usr/bin/slocate.cron) is as follows:
"udf,nfs,smbfs,ncpfs,proc,devpts,iso9660,usvdevfs" -e
  "/tmp,/var/tmp,/usr/tmp,/afs,/net"

The second line are the directories that your slocate database is ignoring as well.
You wouldn't want to bloat your database with temp files would you? In other words,
that file is good. Next:

The following files (/var/spool/cron/ directory) consist of numbers that
don't seem to follow the date and time format:
 cron.daily -- 20010131
 cron.weekly -- 20010127
 cron.monthly -- 20010127
  --

I have a link for you:

http://mandrakeuser.org/admin/acron2.html

that should teach you how to properly include and configure jobs for your anacron.

Your last problem, DB2, is not really a problem unless...
This is simply saying that you have one, some or all of the following database
managers installed on your computer and you have not created any database tables or
anything for your database manager. If you don't plan on using these database
managers, I recommend that you remove them from your system with the following command:

rpm -e [database manager name here]

If you do plan on using any of them but you have not "got around to it", turn it off.
It is okay, because the database manager(s) are still there. They're just not included
in your cron jobs. So then you won't receive unnecessarily redundant messages from
anacron in your mail que. It is a problem on the other hand if you have put one
together and installed it into a database manager and you have only one running at
starttime and that is the one you have put your database tables. (unlikely, because
you would have more error messages other than just a missing DB key)

Cheers,

Re: [newbie] Installation of .bin files

2001-02-03 Thread Altoine Barker

There should be one "." (dot) and one "/" (slash) infront of the executable (binary.
we call them binaries in *nix environments). The other way that you can try is:

sh binary.bin

If you still get a permission error that is because you have a program on your
computer that will not allow you to write to certain partitions as anyone, even root!
To write to them, you would have to reboot and hop into single user mode and then log
in as root but that is getting ahead of our self.If that doesn't help you, I have one
question to ask. What level of security are you playing with anyway, by the way?

Cheers,

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.3/8.0 - getting ready

2001-02-03 Thread Richard T. Waters

Whenever a new release comes out I have always been in the habit of doing a full
install, rather than an upgrade.
Of course this entails some backing up and restoring of information.

I have seen some discussions regarding how many partitions is best for an
install, and I notice there are (as usual)
varying opinions.

Is there a general guideline I can follow.  Do I basically want to set up /;
/boot and /usr? What should be a good
rule of thumb for allocating space for the various partitions?

I have a 20 GB HD that in Windows (because of my old BIOS) is recognized as a
8 GB one, but Linux recognizes it as the 20 GB it is and works without
problems. Maybe I don't have any problems because it is my 2nd. HD, and my
boot partition is on the first disk (my root and other stuff is on the 2nd.
one). It seems that the Linux boot loader uses the BIOS in the booting
process, but after that Linux just ignores the BIOS and uses its own FS
routines.

Yep!, that's a problem. I have many pdf files that neither the Xpdf nor the
KGosthview can open, and I just need those files.
Other problem that I have is that I can't print some pdf files (even with
Acrobat). The print engine reports a problem with the postcript sintax. But
if I generate an ps file with Acrobat in my old Conectiva Linux PC, and then
print it in my Mandrake Linux 7.2 PC, it works. Why? I don't know why the
Mandrake version has that problems.

Those can be run approximately two ways.

In either a text or virtual terminal you can type

7.2 isn't exactly *broken* on my box, but I am having relatively frequent
experiences of video problems (technocolor static appearing in frames, around
borders and sometimes only the dot,box and x -like are in the upper right

Besides, if what the KDE crew has done with Konq' and the rest is any

[newbie] More on DB2 and slocate (cron daily problem)

2001-02-03 Thread Jacqueline Michell

Thanks to Meph and others who replied to my original question. I've looked
a little further and can give some more details, so I am going to send this
again. Does anyone know what DB2 refers to? All I want to do is _get
rid_ of the following daily message:
From:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Anacron)
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Anacron job 'cron.daily'
DB2 problem...: Missing or empty key value specified
slocate: this is not a valid slocate database:

slocate.db is a list of *.dll (obviously Windows files)Why?
Another file (/usr/bin/slocate.cron) is as follows:
"udf,nfs,smbfs,ncpfs,proc,devpts,iso9660,usvdevfs" -e
"/tmp,/var/tmp,/usr/tmp,/afs,/net"
--
The following files (/var/spool/cron/ directory) consist of numbers that
don't seem to follow the date and time format:
cron.daily -- 20010131
cron.weekly -- 20010127
cron.monthly -- 20010127
--
I have also found, via the kcron utility (/usr/bin/kcron), that I have no
crontab files for root, bin, daemon, adm, lp, sync, shutdown, halt, mail,
news, uucp, operator, games, named, sympa, gopher, ftp, nobody, xfs, htdig,
postfix, gdm, and my two non-root users. Kcron looks like the way to
make/edit these files after I find documentation.
--
/var/log/cron/info shows that my cron jobs are mostly logging the start/stop
of the process, updating the time-stamps, and the command: /sbin/rmmod -as.

At this point, I just want to get rid of the DB2 message! Thanks a lot
to anyone who can point to a solution.

[newbie] dns quit working

2001-02-03 Thread Todd Wells

For reasons I don't understand, DNS abruptly quit working on my Mandrake 7.2
box. It was working earlier today, then I was trying to configure Samba and
it seemed to quit sometime around then. I don't believe I did anything
related to DNS, but it quit working.

I can ping by IP address all day, but if I attempt to ping by name it fails
unless static resolution is specified in my /etc/hosts. I'm reasonably
certain that the DNS servers are fine (both of them) because my windows
machines resolve just fine using the same DNS servers.

I looked in ummm, Drakconf I think it's called and under the name resolution
section it confirmed I was usings "hosts, dns". Reboots haven't seemed to
help.

I don't know where to start with this, any help is appreciated! Needless to
say, I'm kind of stuck until I get it working (in fact, I'm writing this
email from Windows :-( )

What color resolution? If your running it at 4billion colors or 16million
etc. try going up one step on resolution to 800x640 and dropping down one
step in colors. The problem is overdriving the monitor in one of those areas
it sounds like.

I really need some help getting X to run on my new dell 4000 laptop.
It's an ATI rage mobility video card. I can get video to run at 640X480 but
looks really bad. Any other setting I try just give me a blob of color.
Do i need XFree 4.0.2? If so were can I get it at?

Thanks

Re: [newbie] The new Hearts game

2001-02-03 Thread Michael O'Henly

What you're looking at are the programs' "sources". This means that you'll
have to compile it on your system. Usually this isn't a big deal, even if you
don't understand what's actually happening while you do it.

I'm not familiar with the package you mentioned, but here are the general
steps:

First, you unpack it. From the filename we know that it's been archived with
tar and then compressed with gzip (i.e., filename.tar.gz). (Tar takes a group
of files and folders and archives them into a single file. Gzip makes that
single file smaller.)

Make a temporary folder. Copy hearts-1.2pre1.tar.gz into that folder. Give
the following comand at the command line:

tar -zxvf hearts-1.2pre1.tar.gz

This will unpack the archive and recreate the original "sources", probably in
a folder of their won. In the top level of that new folder should see some
text files with names like README or INSTALL. Read them.

There may also be a file called "configure". Give the following command at
the command line:

./configure

Configure looks at your system and figures out what you have. If it finds
you're lacking things this program needs, it will tell you. Assuming
configure finds no problems, give the following command at the command line:

make

This actually compiles the program. You'll see a lot of text scrolling by and
depending on the size of the program it may take a few minutes to complete.
Assuming it finishes with no fatal errors, become the root user (i.e., "su",
then your root password), and then give the following command at the command
line:

make install

This puts copies of the compiled program and its supporting files in various
places on your machine. After you've done this, become your normal user again
(i.e., "exit") and you should be able to run the program from the command
line:

hearts [or whatever the correct name is]

If you find it works properly, you can run it in future by hitting Alt-F2 and
entering the name, creating a menu item, or with a desktop shortcut...

Cheers.

M.

When you create your new partitions on hdc if the your swap is
numerically in the same position, i.e. hdc2 before and hdc2 after, 7.2 on
hda will have no problems finding it.

BTW you can run 7.2 without a swap partition. How well it runs will depend
on the amount of phyical Ram you system has. I ended up running Mandrake
several weeks in this manner and saw no detriment in performance.

[newbie] Swap file on two hard drives?

2001-02-03 Thread Dennis Myers

Hi all, after two days of shear frustration I am back on line. So after a
major problem with the WD hard drive, not wanting to take an upgrade and
files corrupted etcetc I discovered that the silly thing will take a
complete format and reinstall of 7.2 In the process it saw an old version on
the hdc and formatted the swap on that disk. so it sees swap as hda5 and
hdc5. My question is, if I do an install of 7.2 on the hdc drive and reformat
the whole thing will that mess up the linux installation on the hda drive
since it may not be able to see the swap in the same place on the hdc drive?
I want to do this because the hdc install will be my test bed to try things
while hda will be my hopefully stable version for security and connection to
internet etc. Any help will be appreciated.

Can you go back to the d/l site and get the gpg keys? If so they are also a

[newbie] backing up under mount point / how?

2001-02-03 Thread Tyrone

Hi,

I have 4 mount points

/dev/hda5 /
/dev/hda7 /usr
/dev/hda8 /var
/dev/had9 /home

I wish to backup everything on /dev/hda5 so I can
reformat it, then copy it back.

However since this happens to be the / partition I
know there are a lot of special entries and files
there like /dev /mnt etc...and I'm not sure that a
simple cp -pR is going to suffice...

Can someone hopefully tell me what command I can use
to successfully copy everything on /dev/hda5, then
restore it after I format it?

thank you!!

[newbie] The new Hearts game

Dear Anyone, Have any of you downloaded and installed the new
hearts-1.2pre1.tar.gz?

This is for KDE2. I have LM 7.2 with KDE2 and I would like to install
this however I am a tar newbie.

I have read and studied everything about tar and I still do not get it.

What would be the exact steps to install this new game? The directions
seem so complicated to me. If someone can help with this I will
appreciate.

I know that many of you have kindly given me instructions however I was
told to follow the instructions of the tar file itself and that is where
I am absolutely lost. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

[newbie] problems printing through samba with cups and HP722c

2001-02-03 Thread Fireman71

Trying to set up a box running LM7.2 as a print server for a couple of win98
machines.

Currently i have samba set up correctly as far as i can tell. All the
machines can see each other and talk to each other fine. On the windows
machines i can open up network neighborhood and see the linux box. Open up
the linux box and i can see the shared files and read and write to them
perfectly. Now the problem...

I see two printers, one named "lp" and the other named "printers" but there
is only one printer attached to the linux box. A HP DeskJet 722c. Under
LM7.1 without CUPS i only saw one printer and just set up the windows
machines to print to it and all was good in the world.

Now i have tried to print to both of the printers that samba is showing and
havent been able to get anything to come out of the printer but i am fairly
certain that the print jobs are being sent to the linux box. Reasons i think
this are that all the network lights blink like they did when a print job
was being sent under 7.1 and tcpdump is showing that the linux box is
receiving packets from the win98 box that is sending the job.

So i am fairly certain that windows is sending out the print job and that
the linux box is receiving it but nothing is getting printed. Any one have
any ideas about what i need to do to solve this one?

Thanks in advance,
Ian K. Harrell

type

netstat -a

or
netstat -a -n

this should list all connections. Established and listening.
You are right, I don't see any difference at all. But I bet if you go to
securityportal.com or securityfocus.com and do a scan of your computer, you will find
that what you see in your netstat listening will be all that is open.

Re: [newbie] Mozilla question

2001-02-03 Thread s

Nope on the printer port I guess. Supposed to be local. I told pmfirewall
to leave nothing open. Netstat -l after inserting ALL : ALL. Doesn't seem
any different. (Can that prevent me from rsyncing, telneting, and
minicoming to my Agenda hand held device?)

Re: [newbie] missing swap file

2001-02-03 Thread Goldenpi

Swap partition must be set up in /etc/fstab. If you set it up during install
the installer should have done it.

Windows doesn't come with partitioning tools. 95 and 98 come with fdisk
which doesn't work on ext2 or swap partitions and millenium doesn't come
with anything.
