The Sourcecode are the basic code for the program, and need to be compiled in
order to run. The rpm file are a compiled program made ready for a specific
distribution, for your (and me) Mandrake. The problem is that the Licq-rpm
are made for Mandreke Cooker, which is not the same as Mandrake 7.2.
The sourcecode for Licq can be found at: http://www.licq.com/download.html

I'm trying to setup scsi emulation in mandrake 7.2...

HOW do I do this...?
I tried the redhat approach...but everytime I reconfigure lilo...
it says theres a syntax error.

this is what I did...

at the end of /etc/rc.local
I put: insmod ide-scsi

then at the end of /etc/lilo.conf
I put: append="hdd=ide-scsi"

this was in a how-to for redhat...

I installed a HP cd-rw 9150i as secondary slave
which in linux is: hdd
harddrake recognised the drive

I seem to remember that Mandrake 7.2 does not directly support the Matrox G450

Matrox has a beta driver on their site as well - any tips on getting that
installed?

I am running XFree 4x that comes with 7.2

I know your pain with trying out Linux.   I tried Corel Linux 1rst edition and I couldn't get it past the video card configuration. Most of the forum help I got from Corel was intolerant with newbies. I tried Linux4Windows but I only got as far as a half hour loading of the K desktop. I was informed by many users that Linux4Windows is far too slow, although it shouldn't be that slow, and I was better off with a full blown installation on a dedicated partition.    I bought another harddrive, 30GB WesternDigital, and tried installing the full version 7.2 sadly though at that time I was using my TV as a monitor and I couldn't see very clearly the on  screen direction to install. I bought my monitor now but haven't gotten around to installing it.    My specs with any user who can provide suggestions or hints.    1GHz AMD Athlon 128MB SDRAM 4GB Hddrive with Windows ME 30GB Hddrive intended for Linux or for video editing. Make sure you are logged in as "root".

Ensure that you have the following files installed first:

initscripts-5.27-37mdk.i586
open-1.4-12mdk.i586
glibc-2.1.3-16mdk.i586
then
aurora

If you are using Grub, open the Grub folder and edit the Menu.1st file.
Add the line vga=788 to the end of kernel line. Resave the file and
reboot your computer.

The next time your computer boots up you will see Aurora. That's it.

[newbie] Installing problem...

2001-02-28 Thread Pajunen Lauri Anffi Henrikki

Hello!

I hope this isn't the wrong list to ask this... Well anyway

Stats:
Pentium III 800Mhz
Abit VH6 133Mhz
Seagate 20Mgb
NVidia Geforce II 32Mb
Sound Blstr. Live!
128Mhz of memory
A basic Lan card (listed as compatible, can't remember it now)

Well I started to install Mandrake (newest), and everything went just fine
until it stated that it's "mounting ramdisk". Then I got a message:

"mounting failed, invalid argument"
"error mounting ramdisk. This shouldn't happen, and I'm rebooting your
 system now"

Then it promptly booted my system...

I tried to install a windows install with it (lnx4win), and a normal one.
I have 7Gb free on my second hard disk. BUT I don't have free space on my
primary one, which contains windows (actually theres only 200Mb free
there).

What is the default directory in which to it tries to install it self?

Another fact: I can't install Corel Linux at all. It blurs my screen as if
it woulnd't support my videocard. THUS -> My card IS GeForce II, there was
only "GeForce" on the compatibility list, does "Geforce" mean all of
"Geforce's" or just only "GeForce I"

I would love to have Linux on my computer, but my skill just ran out...
I'm a nerd, but not a Linux guru...

Hey Roman, I don't know how others do it but I use gftp from the KDE desktop
to down load, that way I can save to a designated file, copy to a zip for
future use and do the "rpm -Uvh *.rpm " from the saved file to load the new
rpms. If I ever have to reinstall the zip files are waiting without having to
go through a 56K modem d/l again. gftp also is capable of resume function so
if you loose the connection you can pick it up where you left off.

[newbie] A few more questions...plus a big THANKS!

2001-02-28 Thread Derek Rayne

I am having problems again with my Linux system. Here is the basics
about it...

Linux Mandrake 7.0 is the version
Pentium 133Mhz system
80mb of RAM
Permedia 3000 video card (4mb)
Sony 100SX monitor (SVGA)
10.2gb hard drive for Linux ONLY
Zoltrix external 33.6kbps modem
Zip 100 External Drive (Parallel)
HP610CL Deskjet printer

Now the problems...

Xwindows will NOT install properly due to the screen always going blank
when I select the options given to me while having the # prompt, I
typed in Xconfigurator and a program comes up where I can select, but
then after selecting it goes blank on me, with the only recourse to
reboot my entire system.

Now, I am trying to set up my system to be able to call, using the
modem, to my internet provider (T-Three) and I don't know how to set
this up. I went into the # prompt, and typed in userconf and it came
up with menu selections, but I don't know how to do any of this.

NOTE: I do NOT have any instructions as that someone just gave me the
CD ROMs and the install boot floppy.

If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

Well fortunately they said Tractopel meant "plow" in French.

Unfortunately I am handicapped with struggling with a single language

Is it Trac-too-pell? Track-toupee? or perhaps Tract-opel?

The new rpms should upgrade you if you do the package all at one time or
individually, either way. But, where did you find the mandrake rpms, when I
navigate through the mirrors to the kde rpms under mandrake it comes up
blank. If you are looking at just redhat rpms, i'd wait until the mirrors

Not a problem--nuke em. And, I always change my /etc/logrotate.conf
so that the rotation is "rotate 1" instead of "rotate 4" and change all
references from "monthly" to "weekly"

In a home or small office setup I see no need for all these logs, and if
they are on a small /var partition they can fill it and choke the system

Alanthe package is Aurora-7.2-17mdk.i586.rpm on your
installation CD. After installing it to get it to run all
that is needed is a statement in either lilo or grub setting
the frameuffer to a value suitable for your video (a good
guess would be 785 or 788):

vga=xxx

Colors (depth) 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200

Hi Marcia,

I'm glad it worked. I am not familiar with DOS at all either. But
as long as VMware concerns, make sure the devices are "conected" to the
virtual machine if you're trying to use Fdisk on a floppy. Look on the
"Devices" part of the VMware menu.
If no one on this list is able to help you, you could take a look
at the newsgroups at:

news://news.vmware.com/

I'm sure you'll find there many answers. Good luck.

RE: [newbie] Adaptec SCSI Installation AVA 1505

2001-02-28 Thread Daryl Johnson

Well, the full story is :

Portbase = 0x340this is jumpered on the board
IRQ = 9 this too is jumpered on the board
SCSI ID = 7 which is fairly standard
recconect is enabled
parity is enabled
synchronous is enabled
delay = 500
extended translation is disabled

thus we get the command

insmod aha152x aha152x=0x340,9,7,1,1,0,500,0

and for a glorious half hour last night that seemed to be accepted so that
when I checked KDE/Information/IRQ against 9 it said AHA152x and against
KDE/Information/Ports against 340 it said AHA152x.
dmesg identified the board and wqas suggesting ftape as a tape device - even
though that didn't seem to work.

Anyway, now the command insmod etc no longer works, I have the same error
message I started with:

Using /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/scsi/aha152x.o: init_module:
Device or resource busy Hint: insmod errors can be caused by
incorrect module parameters including invalid IO or IRQ
parameters

and dmesg says:

aha152x: BIOS test: passed, detected 1 controller(s)
aha152x0: vital data: PORTBASE=0x340, IRQ=9, SCSI ID=7, recconect=enabled
parity=enabled, synchronous=disabled, delay=500, extended
translation=disabled
aha152x: trying software interrupot, lost.
aha152x: IRQ 9 possibly wrong. Please verify.

So in the words of the prophet and philosopher Foul Ole Ron - 'buggrit,
millenium hand and shrimp, I tole 'em.' (Explanations upon request :o) )

So if anyone has any valid suggestions for my problem...

regards

Daryl

First off I'm glad you have your memory problem solved and I'll bet it was an
incompatibility, however if any of the Tech's that work for me ever used the
method you just described to troubleshoot a memory problem they would be
in the unemployment line... In my shop we have an SP3000 for testing Simms
and Dimms and as a standard practice if they test good we exchange the
memory with another brand and always make sure we are matching the same
speed..

My advice find a better shop with professional Tech's.

Andyif it's supermounted then closing the Konqueror
window in which you're viewing the contents of the zip disc
should unmount it and allow you to eject the media. If it's
not supermounted then there's a menu item called Unmount in
the right-click menu of the desktop icon that appears in

RE: [newbie] VMware(again)

2001-02-28 Thread Esteban Villeda

Marcia, to install Win on your vmware is as if you were installing on a real
machine. The first thing I recommend is to have a boot disk which may
include fdisk, format and cdrom access (ask someone close to you who has
given tech support).
Start your vmware with the disk in your floppy, and then run fdisk to
activate your partition. Then you can format your virtual disk. Greetings,

Esteban Villeda

[newbie] Can't install because /dev/hda is missing

2001-02-28 Thread Miark

Hi all,

My xfs was hosed and I wanted to try ReiserFS, so I decided
to do a fresh install. Everything seems fine up to the point
of making a boot disk, including formatting two Reiser
logical partitions and a Linux swap partition. I tried the
following:

1) Primary FAT32 partition for C:
2) Primary Extended partition
   - Logical 5 GB Reiser for /
   - Logical 1 GB Reiser for /home
   - Logical 500 MB Linux Swap
   - Logical 20+ GB FAT32 for D:

and then I tried

1) Primary FAT32 partition for C:
2) Primary ReiserFS for /
3) Primary Linux Swap for sway
4) Primary extended partition
   - Logical 20+ GB FAT 32 for D:

but that made no difference, and here's exactly what
happens: when I try to make a boot disk, it says it
can't find mkbootdisk (or something like that). And
then when I try to install lilo or grub, it says

Fatal: open /dev/hda: no such file or directory

which sounds to me like it can't find anything that
it itself already installed (same with the absence of
mkbootdisk). I've tried installing several times, but
to no avail. During some of my attempts, it would
quit at the point where you choose a timezone. It
would say it couldn't find zoneinfo.

What should I do?

Thanks,
Miark

If so, are there any config file changes necessary? Should the ZipCD USB be

I too noticed that the 7.2 installation runs through a lot of options I am

What I did was to simply choose recommended install and then using rpmdrake,
install all the libraries, compilers and help files i required. Not as
simple, but did the trick for me anyway.

Several files on our system appear bright green with a * immediately after
them when a directory listing is performed.

What does this indicate?

Re: [newbie] Installation Error @ step "Setup Filesystems"

2001-02-28 Thread Buzz and Nan

The Neat thing about Linux is you can you boot it from anywhere.

I boot Linux-Mandrak 7.2 on a secondary hard drive without hassle. When I
tried upgrading to Kernel 2.4, however doesn't like it much.

Partition Magic is a good tool for resizing and creating partitions. Also
helps in creating a partition that Linux understands uses rather easily.

Windows 98, Windows 98 J, Windows 2000 and Linux all coexist peacefully.

Good luck!

Re: [newbie] untar commands?

2001-02-28 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Bill:

To uncompress a tar.gz file, simply do the following:

As user, type tar -xzf xxx.tar.gz

For example, to untar (uncompress) the mozilla browser suite, do as follows:

tar -xzf mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-0.8-MathML-SVG-XSLT.tar.gz

It is sometimes preferable to put your tar.gz file into a special directory.

For example, after downloading the mozilla file into your home
directory, you can create a mozilla directory (you can call it whatever
you want). For example, you can call it MOZ

$ mkdir MOZ

Then move the tar.gz file into this directory:

$ mv mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-0.8-MathML-SVG-XSLT.tar.gz MOZ

Now within /home/user/MOZ untar the file as above and you will find a
new subdirectory, in this case, "mozilla" (/home/user/MOZ/mozilla). Now,
either rebuild the tar.gz file (i.e "configure", "make" and "make
install" -- this does NOT apply to Mozilla but to many other tar.gz
binaries). In this case, all you need to do is to go into
/home/user/MOZ/mozilla and type ./mozilla This will launch the Mozilla
browser.

Yours,

Benjamin

[newbie] Aurora hangs showing only left bar

2001-02-28 Thread Timo Hoderlein

Hi evereyone,

I have already tried to install Mandrake 7.2 several times. The install
process goes smoothly, but when the system boots for the first time, the
graphical boot manager Aurora freezes and shows only the left bar. There
is also no reaction of mouse or keyboard.
If I choose failsafe mode, the system starts without any problem.

I am a little disappointed because the Mandrake 7.1 version worked fine.

What can I do to solve this problem?

Here's my hardware configuration:

AMD Athlon 800 MHz on a ASUS K7V board
Matrox Millenium II
Adaptec AHA-2940UW with Quantum Viking II 4.5WLS, IBM DCAS-32160W
Adapter, Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-303 and Yamaha CRW8824S
Adaptec AVA-2904
Soundblaster 128PCI
REalmagic Hollywood Plus-Decompression card

I would appreciate any suggestions

CU

Timo

[newbie] Installation Error @ step "Setup Filesystems"

2001-02-28 Thread Hans N.

I recently submitted a problem with installation to the customer service
(follows). Although I have not received the remedy, I thought I'd pose the
question here since I'm sure I will not be the only one to have this
problem. On a side note, I was wondering how advantageous a secondary hard
drive would be for a dual-boot system. Feel free to send thoughts on a
second hard drive directly to my e-mail account. Thank you.

Original Message:

I am running Windows 98 second edition on a Compaq Presario 7471 Internet
PC. Compaq has my system set up with a partition already made. The C: drive
being the main partition and the D: drive being the second partition. all my
work is done with the C: drive, the D: drive is there for reinstalling
software to factory settings. The D: drive is unneeded since the Compaq
software CD's for my system work better than the D: drive installation.

Now to the problem. I want to have the dual-boot option so that I may keep
Windows 98 working on my system. I wanted to install Linux Mandrake 7.2
Powerpack Deluxe on the same hard drive, I own only one hard drive.
Configuring my set-up worked very smoothly until I reach the step "Setup
Filesystems" Linux recognized both partitions (C: and D:) and asked which
partition I would like Linux to be installed on. My natural choice was the
larger C: partition. The error message I received when selecting the C:
drive is as follows:

Partitioning Failed: The FAT resizer is unable to handle your partition, the
following error occurred: Can't locate object method "new" via package
"resize_fat::main" at /usr/bin/perl-install/install_interactive.pm line 108,
<> line 6

My hard drive utilizes Windows' FAT 16 file allocation. I have ActivePerl
5.6.623 installed on Windows 98. My computer boots my CD-RW before my
floppy, allowing me to boot for CD installation with no problem. I have
noticed no other obvious errors when attempting to install the Linux OS. I
also noticed no unusual problems with the Windows software. However, I am
completely inexperienced with using Linux software.

I have researched the mailing lists and the booklets as well as the
tutorials accompanying the distribution. My limited knowledge points me
towards purchasing a secondary hard drive, deleting the D: drive, and
requesting your aid... I decided to start here first. I thank you for your
time and patience and look forward to hearing something soon. Please feel
free to request any and all information you feel is appropriate to help
alleviate this situation. I still anxiously await my first step away from
the Windows environment :^)

Sincerely and respectfully,
Hans Nielsen

If you are using LM 7.2, you should already have everything you need to
install Acrobat Reader. I have the "Complete" distro, and it is on disk
#3 in the AcrobatReader directory. The installation instructions are in
the index.html file. For information on the tar command, use Konqueror
to browse the location #tar and the usage instructions will be
displayed.

That their 'executable' bit is set.

In most cases that will mean that that file may be run by typing it's
command.

For example the commandline ls -l /usr/bin/s* returns the following
listing of /usr/bin (truncated)

-rwxr-xr-x1 root root14627 Apr 1 2000 /usr/bin/s2p*
-r-xr-sr-x1 root games 21296 May 11 2000
/usr/bin/same-gnome*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 2994 Apr 18 2000
/usr/bin/sane-config*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 122 Apr 25 2000
/usr/bin/savetextmode*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 194 Apr 21 2000
/usr/bin/saveunimap*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 140752 May 12 2000
/usr/bin/sawmill*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root12816 May 12 2000
/usr/bin/sawmill-capplet*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root10704 May 12 2000
/usr/bin/sawmill-client*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root35314 May 12 2000
/usr/bin/sawmill-themer*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root30416 May 12 2000
/usr/bin/sawmill-ui*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root19440 Apr 18 2000
/usr/bin/scanimage*

And so on

run 'man ls' from your console for a detailed explaination

Cheers

John
