Re: [newbie] Partition information?

2001-03-09 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

The problem with df is that it only lists mounted partitions and it
omits swap partitions. I believe there is a programme called gpart
that can identify partitons, even damaged ones.

You know, the dependencies are there for a reason.. Only override if you have
the stuff needed but it's not recognized by rpm.

And now, a little clip from Discworld! :)

Here are what the metioned services do; you decide if you need them:

IRDA = IR communication.  Do you use an IR device?

XFS  = The Xfont server.  Normally required for X windows to
run...

rawdevice =  is used to bind a Linux raw character device to a block
device.

fetchmail = is a  mail-retrieval  and forwarding utility; it
fetches mail from remote mailservers and forwards it to your local (client)
machine's delivery system.  Not nessessary (I don't think, not certain)
if you use a popclient like Netscape.

I agree. This 'was' one of the better groups that I subscribe to. A true
wealth of information by some very knowledgeable people. Now it has proven
to be a chore to receive messages only to delete them because about half are
crap and have nothing to do with Linux. There are many, many different
forums to discuss other topics, I'm not sure why anyone would choose this
group to discuss religion etc.

Re: [newbie] Startup services, which are necessary?

2001-03-09 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

Sorry, I am not trying to answer the question here - I am merely
adding to it. There are some other services I have queries about. I
have looked at the services section at mandrakeuser.org but it hasn't
been updated since Mandrake 7.1, so it is missing a few entries.

* drakfont:
I do use TrueType fonts, but is it really necessary to have a daemon
to check these fonts every time I boot? It adds about 5 seconds to
bootup time and probably uses some memory too.

* kheader:
This looks (from the DrakConf description) like it would be useful,
but is it necessary?

Thanks for any help.

Re: [newbie] My evaluation of New Traktopel Beta Mandrake 8

It can be really rough doing distro beta testing. I couldn't even
consider doing it if I weren't on a cable modem. When you deal with
Cooker/betas, you have to accept the fact that you may download stuff
that may not even be an installable OS. So you try again later in the
day/week and see if the packagers fixed all the problems you hopefully
found and reported from your attempt (assuming an update hasn't already
been released).

Roman this is exactly the way I did it and I had no problem except with
printing, I broke cups somehow. So, the thing is did you really have the
install from KDE2.1beta2 or a lower release? My install of 2.1 final was on
top of the beta 2 and I had to add two other packages I can't remeber and add
"apdm" package. Wait I'll look and see what they were, (into konsole looking
at kpackage) ok, I think it was libg++ and a glibc package. Then I went to
console mode completely out of KDE and used the rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force
*.rpm and then did the rpm --rebuilddb and then upgrade-menus -v and
then rebooted and here I am back with KDE2.1 If this is the same way that
you did it I do not understand the problem except.. Civileme
indicated that you should be sure and do the hdparm -d1 /dev/hd? with the
question mark being your harddrive letter. That optimisation may be the
difference? I have just reached the end of my knowledge base, hope something
in all that mess helps you.

Looks like you missed "kdebase , kdegames, apmd, and you don't have PPP. Do
you use a cable modem or dsl, and thus have uninstalled PPP? Anyway, the
libkdefakes.so.0 is indeed a fake. ignore it. Get the other packages you are
missing and put them with the others in the folder and then do " rpm -Uvh
--nodeps --force *.rpm " and every thing should install. It did for me
anyway. Let us know about PPP cause that is a puzzler. You may have to look
for it in rpmfind.net and add it. Oh, and when you do it with the command
like above the packages don't have to be any any order. Civileme has taught
me much, and yet so much more to learn. Good luck,

Re: [newbie] change animated .gif to open source format?

2001-03-09 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

PNG format does not allow for animation. The best format to use would
be MNG, the multiple-image version of PNG. It does not contain any
proprietry compression techniques (like GIF does). You probably could
convert the image using something like The GIMP.

Hey, thanks for the info. But if you see my post "I seem to have made a
mistaek myself", it's not a good idea to uninitialize xFS, it's needed by X.
You can tell xfree86 not to use it by editting some files, but there's no
need to do this.

I just installed PMFirewall, and found a good Mandrake online tutorial
at http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Networking/IPmasq/pages/ that
led me through the setup. So I got it up and running successfully. I
port scanned myself using http://crypto.yashy.com and had no holes. The
startup services on your list that I had enabled and running during the
port scan were xfs and network. So I guess you can leave those two
running safely if you need them. I'm not sure if they are really needed
though in a desktop situation. I will remove them if I find out they are
not needed. rawdevices I have set in startup services but it was not
running. irda and fetchmail i do not have in my list of startup
services. If you use the self port scan at the forementioned URL, su in
a terminal first and run "tail -f /var/log/messages". Then you will see
all the attempts at getting in, and if they all have a DENY in them,
your door is locked.

Hi everybody,

I'm running the beta on a dual-boot system. Overall, I think it's pretty good
for the first go-round but there are several pieces still missing. Many
people have reported problems with sound, you can't yet burn CDs, there are
some packages still to be added, etc.

I'm booting into 8.0 using GRUB. (I don't know about LILO, but I had no
trouble installing GRUB.) I certainly didn't have to use a boot diskette.

These are NOT official instructions, but they were written for people testing
the Mandrake 2.1-for-7.2 RPMs and they worked for me:

-[ snip ]-

Install instructions:

Download into a Directory like /home/username/tmp/KDE (you do not need static
libs and such nor the devel packages unless you want kdevelop 1.4)
get into root and cd to that directory
urpme qt2
urpme kde
urpme arts
urpme koffice
rpm -ivh *rpm
rpm --rebuilddb
update-menus -v#hit a return after it appears to hang
exit
logout
login under kde
Voila!

Cautions and bugs:

1. it makes the appearance of emacs unbelievably ugly
2. KDevelop will keep asking for a library path even after you give it te
correct one Just hit cancel and it will complete installation (Kde bug of
some sort).

-[ snip ]-

A couple of additional caveats (again, these applied to me and may not to
you):

1. Install the apmd package before the install. You can find it in the 7.2
distribution.

2. When you install the RPMs, you may get conflicts with existing installs of
kdoc, imap, imap-devel, and qt-devel. Remove these packages using the
command, "rpm -e [packagename]" before doing the "rpm -ivh *rpm" step above.

3. This upgrade procedure should work to update any configuration including
and later than KDE 1.99.

Cheers.

DRXif you press the control key and while holding it down

kdf

then either press enter or click the run button. This

To this stupid thread!

I invited a friend over to experience the wonders of Linux Mandrake and
to learn just what it could do for him. I thought, "I will show him the
message list so he can observer, in action, the support he can expect."
Low and behold all this garbage was floating around and he made the
comment, "Wow, can I expect this crap all the time?" I quickly pointed
out that this was not the norm, but I'm pissed that what was a great
support list has become filled with crap that has nothing to do with
Linux. I feel embarrased that new people will sign up and see this kind
of behavior on a list that is for Mandrake support only, not this other
crap.

[newbie] Cable modem: solved

Well, It was easy than I expected. The cable modem configuration from
Drake wasn't successfull because the location of dhcs was impossible. I
runned windows and then winipcfg to know if the IP, DNS and Gateway
where fixed (the advertisment said "automatic") and there where!!.
The next thing to do was in Netconf put the appropriate DNS, Gateway
and IP number, like in a lan, for the correspondent ethernet card (in
my case the eth1 because the eth0 is for connection with my laptop).
Accept everything and click on Do it (changes).
I saw the Activity led running and, great! now my cable modem conexion
is running.

Re: [newbie] So very off topic....

2001-03-09 Thread mark

Agreed, this is the wrong place to talk about it. But I didn't bring it up.
As far as those on the list that are most upset about those of us who may
try to share our Christianity, they never seem to understand that we are
trying to help them. Most seem to think we're trying to get you into it so we
can get money. Why would I care if you send money or anything else for that
matter, since you're obviously not going to be sending us the money.
There's a reason it's called the GOOD NEWS. (Gospel)

But for the sanity of all those offended souls out there, let's just let this
thread die.

Hi everybody,

I just downloaded all of the Mandrake rpms. However, I cannot get the

You can try pmfirewall. It will run as a service on your workstation.
However, for best results and greater security I highly recommend a
dedicated firewall with no other services running on it, and no users
logged into it.

A simple firewall can be made out of an old 486 or low-end Pentium with
8 or 16 MB RAM, floppy drive, and no hard drive. Try www.freesco.org,
it's a floppy-based router and firewall. I have been using it for a
year with no problems whatsoever.

There's man pages for all c/c++ functions.. Type..

open konqueror and type..

#funtionname

..in the address-field.

Re: [newbie] GRUB Question

2001-03-09 Thread -

How does this relate to the subject, 'GRUB'? Apparently, you have
Mandrake 7.2 running so the subject isn't 'GRUB'; it's "drive access
from a working LM7.2".

That aside, ---Most likely, with two hard drives, if you have Windows,
it's on hda1 and LM7.2 is on a second HD alhough it could just as well
be on the same HD as Windows but on a separate partition. Regardless,
you have to know the partition. You did make a note of it during
installaltion, didn't you?

We'll test to see if you can access the Windows HD from LM7.2 . We'll
do all
the work in terminal mode, not by clicking on icons.

Run LM7.2 as root, then do these commands

cd
mkdir winx
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/winx
cd /mnt/winx
ls -aF --color=auto

You should see the contents of your Windows partition.
After perusing Windows, execute these commands

cd
umount /mnt/winx
rmdir /mnt/winx

If you like the way these worked, you can create aliases that use
these commands so you could look at Windows with just a
simple command such as 'win+' and restore back to linux
with 'win-'

Now to look at any Linux partition, we'll use hdb3 as an example

cd
mount -t ext2 /dev/hdb3 /mnt/hdb3
cd /mnt/hdb3
ls -aF --color=auto

You should now be able to navigate through hdb3.

get back with these commands

cd
umount /mnt/hdb3

CDROMs?

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom
ls -aF --color=auto

to dismount

cd
umount /mnt/cdrom

You have a 2nd CDROM?

call it cdrom2 in the above example

Oh yes, click icons? try clicking /dev/xxx

RE: [newbie] Re: Why is 7.2 so much slower than 7.1

2001-03-09 Thread Myers, Dennis R NWO
Title: RE: [newbie] Re: Why is 7.2 so much slower than 7.1

I do not know the root of your problem, but I am running 7.2 with KDE 2.1 and it is lightning fast.
I can open 5 or 6 different functions like Konqueror on line with Kppp in a 56k modem, have rpmdrake going,
open a console and run kedit or kpackage and be downloading a file off the net, while at the same time installing
another file previously d/l'd. Why you might ask? Just to see if I could. Anyway, I saw no difference in the speed
of the various actions as opposed to if they were working by themselves, except of course for the downloads, which
individually slow down due to the bandwidth available. Something else is eating your lunch, it is not LM 7.2 or linux.
I have seen it suggested that you may not have the monitor optimized, or you might need to tune your harddrive.
Keep looking for the culprit cause the Mandrake is well worth the effort. Dennis M.

You know, I understand all this but you'd think that you could run all
typical daemons without adversely effecting the performance of your machine.
At home I run both 7.2 and W2k, I counted 40 services running on W2K and the
machine works fine.  However, my 7.2 is a bit sluggish.  I tried to disable
as many daemons as I could but it had little effect.

My impression is its the window manager/environment.  It's kind of like you
can't have your cake and eat it too type of thing - you can't have a wm/env
that is both full featured and spunky. I'm sure they are working on it
though...

take a very close look at the programs that are running automatically at

now it works fine...but there's a bug fix once you re-install
that needs fixingit's located here:

just re-install linux...but do NOT format your /home partition

My KDE 2.1 install failed also, breaking X with a "cat: broken pipe"

Sure, it's an option right in the install of Mandrake 7.2

When it asks if you want to automatically start X answer yes.

Then when it asks you if you want it to automatically log in a user say yes

FWIW, the 24hr clock is used by many who work shifts, such as
medical staff (like my mother) and railwaymen. I guess growing up
with it, I never figured counting to 24 caused such discomfort.

For reasons unknown to me, French Canadians also seem to prefer the
24hr clock.

[newbie] Question about zope default username and password

2001-03-09 Thread Gary Nielson

I recently installed Mandrake 7.2 and want to use Zope. However, you need
the username and password to log into the admin screen. I found the file,
access, that contains the username, but the password is encrypted. The
username for the root user is superuser. But nowhere can I find the
password. Can anyone tell me since it must be a default for the new system
that I will need to change after gaining access?

[newbie] Grub startup delay is not working !

2001-03-09 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!

I'm using mdk72 & grub. The problem is that i've got an startup delay
of 5 seconds in /etc/lilo.conf, but on startup the default OS won't
start until i press Enter.

My lilo.conf has the following line: "timeout=50"

Also when i type #lilo it works but "Warning! BIOS drive 0x82 may not
be accessible" appears 8 times 8-?

Lilo stays in MBR of hda and Linux uses sda and sdb...

THANKS! 8-)

The from the ensuing menu choose drakservices and tag xfs to

ITs NOT the irq.. U have to call your cable modem
connection company and talk to them. They can give u
the settings you need. If this is @home, you have to
convice them to send you to senior tech support.
Also you dont need dns stuff for setting up your cable
modem. All you need is hostname.. (ur computer name)
an ip, and subnet mask.. talk to the cable company to
get this.

I run a dual boot win98 Mandrake 7.2 system.

I used to run a Randish Boot manager on my MBR to boot between different
OS's.

I installed Mandrake 7.2 putting GRUB on my root partition. However once I
realised that now my root mandrake partition was now /hda6 and hence not
bootable by Randish boot manager so I decided to install GRUB onto my MBR.
Which I did succesfully but now it just spits me straight into windoze (the
default) without any delay so I can't select a difference choice. I have
changed /boot/grub/menu.lst and added 'timeout 10' to it (it wasn't there
originally)first below 'default 0' and then moved it to the top to no avail.

I have also tried to install LILO but it comes up with the error partition
not found and dies.. so I had to reinstall GRUB again.

RE: [newbie] Re: Why is 7.2 so much slower than 7.1

2001-03-09 Thread Mark Johnson

You know, I understand all this but you'd think that you could run all
typical daemons without adversely effecting the performance of your machine.
At home I run both 7.2 and W2k, I counted 40 services running on W2K and the
machine works fine. However, my 7.2 is a bit sluggish. I tried to disable
as many daemons as I could but it had little effect.

My impression is its the window manager/environment. It's kind of like you
can't have your cake and eat it too type of thing - you can't have a wm/env
that is both full featured and spunky. I'm sure they are working on it
though...

take a very close look at the programs that are running automatically at
boot time. That could be the source of your problems.

[newbie] Partition information?

2001-03-09 Thread DRX

I have gone and lost the paper on which I had written down what
partitions on the hard disk contain which Linux partitions. Is there some
way to get informaion about this in Linux -- some kind of command I can
give, or some kind of application I can run?

The best thing would be if I could get that information in a form that
I can understand, preferably something like this:

 /dev/hda5 / 1.2 GB
 /dev/hda6 /usr 1.2 GB
 /dev/hda7 /home 650 MB
 /dev/hda8 /swap 500 MB

I understand that this is probably asking way too much though, so I'll
settle for information about how big the partitions are, and what they are
called (/dev/hda?). I can probably figure out what they contain just by
getting information on how big they are.

For Commodore 64 you should use The VICE, which gives 99,99% accurate
emulation.. The VICE is a system-independent emulator system that also
emulates Vic20, C128, PET and CBM-II :)

You can get it at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dsladic/vice/vice.html

After installing it, the c64-part is called "x64". Just run that one, and
you're off :) .. btw, you need to have some disk images as well if you want
to play anything.. www.c64.com has thousands of c64-games just waiting to be
downloaded!

Hi,

GRUB doesn't use lilo.conf, it uses a file called menu.lst in the

You may need to run install.sh to install grub onto your MBR, if it isn't
there now.

[newbie] Hi-res bit depth on Nvidia cards

I have been playing around with the 7.X and 8.0 Mandrake distros on two
machines. One has a Riva TNT card, the other has a GeForce 2 MX. Under
Mandrake, I can't get either to run in true color at higher than 1024 x 768.

I thought this was a problem with X but the current Red Hat beta will allow
both of them to run at 24bit at 1600 x 1200. Both betas are using XFree

really concerned about 3d acceleration. Anyone know how I can fix this?

[newbie] Gnu-pop3d problems...

2001-03-09 Thread Arlé Mooldijk

Hi All,

I've got a problem with gnu-pop3d in combination with Linux Mandrake 7.2
(I don't know if it also happens with other Linux distributions). Gnu-
pop3d is installed from gnu-pop3d-0.9.8-3mdk.i586.rpm.

What happens is the following:
gnu-pop3d is started with 'service gnu-pop3d start', this starts 11 processes
of gnu-pop3d. In time the number of processes of gnu-pop3d decrease. It may
happen that in one day there are only 6 processes of gnu-pop3d left, while
there were 11 processes the day before.

It seems that processes are killed when users try to get mail with wrong
passwords entered in their e-mail programs. When the user is away for some
time the mailer may be trying to get mail over and over again, which may kill
gnu-pop3d processes, although I'm not sure.
I am also using stunnel (installed from stunnel-3.13-1mdk.i586.rpm) to provide
secure pop3 connections to my users, which are outside the local LAN. What
stunnel does is that it tunnels port 995 to port 110 and all connections are
encrypted. Port 110 is not available outside the local LAN. I don't know if
stunnel has anything to to with this problem.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this problem?

PS. I have also send an e-mail to the gnu-pop3d mailinglist, but it seems to
be down because I receive no messages from it (I'm subscribed with two e-mail
addresses and none of them receive any mail from it).

With Kind Regards,

did require a fresh 7.2 install to accomplish successfully :)

Generally, if the conflicts you get are only with existing files that
you're fixin to upgrade anyway, this is a situation that warrants the use
of --force. Many are reporting that 'rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force *' is
required to get the 2.1 rpms to install. I did, after fulfilling the few
dep fails I got, and I also had the conflicts with existing pkgs much the
same as yours. I've had no problems since upgrading last Sat morning.

Be cautioned tho that YMMV. I'm not advocating the use of either
--nodeps or --force unless you understand what's involved and are willing
to accept the consequences if it goes wrong. Actually that applies to any
operation that requires root privilege to run.

You could also uninstall the existing pkgs that are reported as
conflicts till you get no 'conflicts' mesgs, but that's basically what
--force does. 'Course if you uninstall some kde pkgs, you then must
install the upgrades, or re-install the old ones during that KDE/X session.
If you're unsure about all this, I'd suggest that 8.0 will be out soon
enough, and it includes kde2.1, 2.4.x kernel, a new gcc, etc.

Re: [[newbie] Linux PDA: would you use one?] Not based on . . .

2001-03-09 Thread donald hinds

I wouldn't based on my experience with LM-7.2. I can only boot in graphical
mode, even FAILSAFE crashes with a Kernel Panic. I can't install a USB (model
supported by Linux-USB.org) modem, can't install Wordperfect 8 (2 CDs &
download tried), I can install Corel Photopaint 9 (1 CD and one download
tried), but it won't run (fonttastic is missing).

And no one knows any answers as to why any or all of these things fail.

One might presume a Linux PDA has a good Linux installed, but what of 3rd
party applications? Who is going to get those working when they fail?

  Don

Just curious, if it was affordable would y'all go for a linux PDA over a
palm or ce PDA? I wonder if running linux on PDA would make it a lot more
customizable and more extensible than the other PDA OSs on the market?

I've been looking for a PDA that was more than just a glorified organizer.
I don't care about storing 5 years worth of appointments or 100,000 email
addresses. I want a PDA to be general purpose computing device. I want my
PDA to be a thin client to my linux server so I can turn the coffee maker on
and pull up my MP3 playlist from my couch.

[newbie] SB32 is not working

2001-03-09 Thread Joan Tur

Hallo!!

I'm using mdk72. I use harddrake to set up SB32 -sndconfig is not
installed by default (i'm using su)-. It plays 8 and 16 bit samples
with no problem but when i reboot it no longer works. And i cannot use
harddrake again: i cannot choose the IRQ and DMAs i choosed before (they
aren't available)... so i have to edit /etc/modules.conf to remove any
line referring to sb... then i restart the system and i can start again.

Any idea?? 8-?

[newbie] RPM Updating

2001-03-09 Thread John Rye

Sometime ago there was a series of posting regarding upgradeing/updating
RPM to current versioning (4.???). I haven't been able to locate those
posting.

Could someone point me in the right direction, I remember there was a
progression involved.

I'm currently running L-M7.1 and rpm-3.0.4 and keep running into
versioning problems as I attempt to upgrade some of the packages I use.

Cheers

[newbie] I seem to have made a big mistake myself. [resolved]

2001-03-09 Thread Paul Rodríguez

Phew!

Ok, folks.
I've learned the XFS is very essential to running X.
I've also learned
how to start the XFS from the command line.  I turns out I was able to just
"ctrl"+"c" the "sending all processes the TERM signal", bringing me to a login
prompt at runlevel 3.  I logged in as root and typed:

"/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start"

I saw that the X
Font Server was started, and I typed "init 5", bring me to the graphical
login.

From there I went to
Startup Services in DrakConf and ethusiastically renabled
XFS.

Have I learned my
lesson!

(Namely, that Linux
is a great platform to learn the intricacies of your
computer.)

And, to never touch
a live wire, toast always falls heavy side down, XFS is important to X, and the
basics of run-level scripts!

[newbie] Can ADOM run on Linux-Mandrake?

2001-03-09 Thread Kipling Cooper

Hi there!

The short question is in the subject, here is some detail:

Compiling adom from source seems to go fine, but then when I run it,
it dumps core (which I do not yet know how to analyze) Is this
easy to do?

Installing adom from the rpm (adom-099g15-3.i586.rpm) seems simple
enough, requires libc.so.5 (libc-5.3.12-34mdk.i586.rpm) but then
when I run it, I see "Error opening terminal: xterm-color." strace
reveals that adom is looking for ~/.terminfo/x/xterm-color and
/usr/lib/terminfo/x/xterm-color. I did an rpm -ql of xterm* and
found that I have an /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm-color
which I then copied to the obove locations (changing XTerm to
xterm:-) but that gives the same error message from adom, and strace
says:
open("/root/.terminfo/x/xterm-color", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No
such file or directory)
open("/usr/lib/terminfo/x/xterm-color", O_RDONLY) = 3
read(3, "! $XFree86: ", 12) = 12
close(3)= 0
write(2, "Error opening terminal: xterm-co"..., 37Error opening
terminal: xterm-color.
) = 37
_exit(1)

Is that enough information to identify the problem?

Re: [newbie] KFM problem

2001-03-09 Thread Thomas Adam

Hello,

I have had the same problem as you... here are a few
things that you could try:

1. Make sure that your Win98 partition is mounted
before you browse the directory. I know that LM mounts
these folders automatically but that sometimes can
cause it to hang

2. Failing that, make sure that in "/etc/fstab" and
"/etc/mtab" that the path to mount your win98 folder
is after the mount point for /dev/hda3

I have recently upgraded to KDE 2.1 following civileme's instructions and
noting other information on the list.

I have a problem with sound:
Previously it worked fine with KDE 2.0,
I have a Soundblaster live player 5.1,
I get no sound on start up,
System sounds do not work, however directly playing the wave files works,
Real Player plays real audio files,
The microphone works.
The mixer shows 'Creative SB live, the volumes are turned up,
Trying to configure in Hardrake, the wizard opens showing the correct card
but when trying to play the sound file, no sound is heard,
I've tried sndconfig, but that gives a message which I can't remember, but
says something including modprobe and resources being used,
System sounds work in Gnome.

Help!!!

Jeff,

If you installed and setup Cups then you could check for your printer in
the Cups admin tools that are under the configuration menu and printers.
But that might have little or nothing to do with Gimp acting strangely.

Besides..uninstalling and reinstalling Gimp isn't going to have any
effect on your printer.

When I clicked on the link to download libXaw.so.7 the download

XFree86-libs-4.0.1-28mdk-i586.rpm package again. This seemed unnecessary,

to download _only_ libXaw.so.7, _separately_? I was unable to find any way
to do that, but I'll check again.

I'm not sure that I am "upgrading multiple packages." All I am trying
to do is to install XFree86-libs-4.0.1-28mdk-i586.rpm. That is only one
package. Granted, it can't be installed unless it has first been
installed, but the libraries needed to install it are not available except
as part of this package. I'm afraid that I don't understand what you mean
by "BUT, not neccesarily, when upgrading multiple packages for something
like XFree86 it's a good idea to..."

If there were several packages and several libraries to download and
install, I could place them all in the same directory, but as it is I have
only one package. I can place this in a directory by itself, but will it
help to do the 'rpm -Uvh *' thing when you have only one package?

startup services on your list that I had enabled and running during the
port scan were xfs and network.

It should come back when you run "kpanel"; right-click on the desktop, go to
the menu-item "run command" and put kpanel in the space provided.

I had the same problem an could not connect to the internet via a modem
after the installation. Following your install were you able to connect
via ppp? If you could then I must be doing something wrong.

Hmmm, not sure what I did differently, but I've been running
1.4.2 for a couple of weeks now w/no problems. Just downloaded
the tar.gz file, untarred and unzipped, read the docs, followed
the straight forward directions and that's all.Perhaps
you got a bum tar.gz file?? Wny not download again and try again?

Jackedit (as root) the first line of /etc/lilo.conf to
read:

boot=/dev/hda7

and save it. Then in console mode as root, execute lilo,
like this:

/sbin/lilo -v

[newbie] no postscript printers in linuxconf

2001-03-09 Thread Rooms Frédéric

Hello,

I try to print with lpr under mandrake 7.2. I installed the rhs-filters,
printtool, control-panel and of course the lpr rpm. When I add a printer
with linuxconf I can't choose a postscript printer. Has anyone a solution ?

PS: I have installed once again the ghostscript package.

[newbie] Where are the KDE Header files?

2001-03-09 Thread - Ron -

Hi all..

When trying to compile knapster (among others) I often get the message below.
I have check my CD distro (7.2) and the KDE 2.0 upgrade cd to no avail.

I seem to have all the other development stuff okay and can usually compile
and install without problems. What RPM do I need?? I checked the Mandrake
page for requirements but no joy.

Thanks...

checking for KDE... libraries /usr/lib, headers /usr/include
checking for extra includes... no
checking for extra libs... no
checking for kde headers installed... configure: error: your system is not
able to compile a small KDE application!
Check, if you installed the KDE header files correctly.
