hi jeff,

this is what worked for me :

1) enable pnp on your 3com card
2) set irq and io with the 3com utility according to the free resources on
your machine
3) set "pnp os=no" in your computers bios
4) on next bootup your bios will init the 3com card and linux will
recognize it with the parameters u have set before in your 3com config
utility, upon loading the 3c509 module.

try this (it HAS to work) and come back if any problems occur...:)

parameter
parm_io/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/net/3c509.o: insmod/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/net/3c509.o

Is the drive actually mounted? If so, do ordinary CD-ROMs work in it?
What are your /etc/fstab settings, and what is the make, model, etc.
of your drive?

Re: [newbie] Good word for Mozilla .8

2001-03-11 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

ASP is a script format for web pages, not unlike PHP. The main problem
with ASP is that it is a Microsoft format. I will not even pretend
that I am an expert on the topic, but I suspect that this M$ format
breaks W3C standards in some way. If not, then those who use this
format would be less likely to comply to standards since they are
writing on a Windos system with Windos users as a primary audience
(since most users use IE).

Re: [newbie] MODEM Com port?

2001-03-11 Thread Dan LaBine

Charley; What type of motherboard do you have? Some of the new
motherboards allow you to assign an IRQ to a specific PCI slot. Take a
look for that in the BIOS, and if it's there, check your M/B to see
which slot your modem is installed in. Make sure that you use an IRQ
that isn't in use, and assign that IRQ to the proper PCI slot.
Otherwise, right under that "Plug and Play" entry in your BIOS is
something that should read "Reset Configuration Data". Enable it. It
will probe your IRQ's and determine if it can automatically assign a
different IRQ to your modem. Next suggestion,...try relocating other PCI
devices, and/or installing them one at a time (Modem first right after
the video card). One word of caution though. This is a last-ditch
exercise. You may have to re-do your install if you try that. Hope that
helps.

I'm guessing that you want LinNeighborhood, the gui interface for
mounting samba shares?

If so, go to http://www.google.com and do a search for LinNeighborhood
(note the two "N"s). You will find the program. By the way, it is a
good one--I can't live without it.

After installing it, if you have trouble configuring, post again to the
list and one of us will help you.

ASP is MS technology (as Micheal wrote below) - similar in idea to PHP, Coldfusion
etc. It's basically server side scripting (ie all the code is executed on the server
and the output - usually straight HTML but can also include all the other things you
find on web pages - is delivered to the browser) and should be viewable across all
browsers/platforms if properly used

.ActiveServerPages ( i think) is proprietary microsnot technology designed
to hide scripts and zoomy stuff so you have to pay for it.

Re: [newbie] Aureal sound card problem

2001-03-11 Thread eryl

The Aureal chipset is not "officially" supported by linux--even though
drakconf detects it. However, excellent drivers are available. Do a
search on sourceforge or go here:

http://www.geocities.com/bofh_666/aureal.html

There is an excellent set of installation instructions there, also. I
have a Turtle Beach (Aureal) in one of my machines, I use the bofh
drivers, and the sound is outstanding, I assure you.

I am having problems...I would like to know what this error message
means.

NOTE: I am not centering some of the lines as it orginally appeared,
but each line appears as it appears.

What I did:

1) Set up a POP account for my ISP
2) Used the correct username and correct password

ADDITONAL NOTE: This is the way that my ISP said it was to be set up,
with no special functions or things to setup in my preferences.

Now the error (trying to goto ANY web site through Netscape)

Warning: The following hosts are unknown:

 home.netscape.com
 home6.netscape.com
 internic.net

This means means that some or all hosts will be unreachable

Perhaps there is a problem with your name server?
If your site must use a non-root name server, you will
need to set the $SOCKS_NS environment variable to
point at the appropriate name server. It may (or
may not) be necessary to set this variable, or the
SOCKS host preference, to the IP address of the host
in question rather than its name.

Consult your system administrator

[OK]

Please help!
kPPP works fine, it is just I would love to go surf the web using
Netscape

[newbie] Good word for Mozilla .8

2001-03-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

For the record, the mozilla .8 rpms in Mandrake Cooker/unsupported are
for i686. They will not install in LM7.2. When I tried to install them
in LM7.2 I got the error message: "for a different architecture." That
was that.

I finally found a version of Mozilla .8 with a Preferences box that
works. In all the other versions I tried (and I think I'd tried them
all), when clicking on OK in the Preferences box (on any item), would
cause Mozilla to crash. This problem did not exist in Mozilla .7 but it
does exist in most Mozilla .8 versions.

Well, I went back to Mozilla's home page (www.mozilla.org) and
downloaded the latest nightly build (20011105) for Linux. This time, the
bug seems to have been fixed. The Preferences configuration went off
perfectly.

Now, my own feelings as a USER about Mozilla are very mixed: I am very
pleased with its feature richness, reliability, stability, etc. However,
I find much of it aesthetically, i.e. (interface design) to be plain,
unimaginative and, in the case of the mail client, downright ugly. If
you compare the interface in Mozilla to that in KDE, Gnome or
WindowMaker, you have the strange feeling that Mozilla belongs,
aesthetically speaking, to some antediluvian, DOS or even pre-DOS (if
that is possible) generation. Let's hope that after Mozilla is
completed, the Mozilla folks will completely redesign the Mozilla
interface.

Now, for the good word I promised in my subject header:

I tried a page that was mentioned earlier by someone else. The URL is:

http://www.pcquest.com/june00/linux_spam.asp

Netscape 4.76, the latest Konqueror (in KDE 2.1) and Opera all rendered
it wrongly or as a real mess.

But Mozilla .8 renders this .asp format SUPERBLY, at least on this page.
Really astonished. What, by the way, is this .asp format that eludes
Konqueror and Opera? Whatever it is, Mozilla does a great job at
rendering it.

Yours,

Benjamin

jhunSorry, leave that change in place and instead of
whatever is now in the options column of the win98 entry or
entries in your /etc/fstab file try the below string there:

exec,user,nosuid,rw,umask=0,conv=binary

Dave,
I thought since TCP/IP was being used for the internet connection on
both PC's (with 2 different IP addresses and subnets) that I couldn't use
TCP/IP to network them together too.
I guess I need to do some more reading on what samba can do. I went out
and bought a book today so I'm going to give it a try. Thanks.

I'd disagree. Most users will never install their own operating system. It'll
either be already included on the computer when they buy it, or they'll pay
someone to reinstall should they ever seriously screw up their computer. Now
with Linux it would be more important, since most people will have to
install. But once Linux becomes mainstream and easy to get pre-installed,
then it should become lower on the priority list.

[newbie] KMail problems

2001-03-11 Thread Robert L Parker

I have newly installed Linux-Mandrake 7.2

My internet connection is successful, and I can browse using Konqueror.
I can also send mail using KMail but i can not read the mail on the server
at all.

I really want to aviod using Netscape if at all possible - it's the only browser
that i prefer IE over. I am getting by booting into 'doze at the moment but the
sooner i can let that go the happier.

Any help appreciated

Re: [newbie] Wordperfect 8

2001-03-11 Thread Dan LaBine

Marcia; You're looking for "http://linux.corel.com" . Slide your mouse
over the grey bar at the top to "Download", and click on Wordperfect8.
Follow the prompts and your done. BUT,...sometimes when you install it
you may not be able to start it. In that case, you'll be looking for an
executable file called "xwp". Do a search for it using Konqueror if
that's the case. One more thing. When you start the program, it'll ask
for a License key. Check out the last question at
"http://linux.corel.com/support/wp8_faq.htm"
If that does'nt solve it, you'll have to call Corel (1-800-77-COREL) or
(613) 274-0500 to get the free license key. You'll notice when you start
WP8 that it opens 2 boxes. The small is the one you use to close WP8.
When you close it, it closes the large one. Hope this helps.

Re: [newbie] MODEM Com port?

Sure, been doing that from the git-go. It's the BIOS that assigned Com
5, IRQ 10. Dunno why, I have Com 2 disabled; AMI BIOS usually looks
there first.Already done as you suggest. No commo device recognized
as such in the /proc/pci directory table.
Also found more detailed info on my particular MODEM thru MUO. I'll
follow up on it.
Meanwhile I'm RTFM'ing. (BG)

Re: [newbie] Disk usage

2001-03-11 Thread Neville Cobb

If you are using KDE2 you can obtain that data by right clicking on the
directory and choose properties. It will then calculate the space.

Another is a program called xdiskusage which graphically presents the
data for you in a bar chart that allows you to setp through each major
section and continues to break it down.

Hmm, there are probably easier ways to do this, but this should get you
started : go to a random dir and type 'du >> filexyz.txt'.

Edit this textfile to get the requested numbers. After giving you the size
of each subdir in a subdir, it eventually gives you the entire size of that
subdir with its own subdirs.

I hope this will help you,
Mathias

[newbie] Tape config & backup

2001-03-11 Thread Andrew Lazarewicz

I've been trying to configure a tape drive and backup

1. I have a Seagate TR-4 ATAPI/IDE tape drive

2. I have Mandrake-Linux 7.2 Powerpack Deluxe

3. Linux boot recognizes the tape, as does HardDrake -- at /dev/hdb

4. I don't know which of /dev/hdb# devices applies to the tape drive

5. I found documentation for KDAT with MD 7.2 Complete. but cannot find the
executable or configuration file.

5a. KDAT documentation discusses a special format -- is the standard TR-4
tape format valid?

6. I found "flexbackup" script on the distribution CDs. It installs OK, but
tells me that the device needs to be defined (it is in the script as /dev/hdb).

7. I found Arkeia, but it applies to a client-server, and a SCSI tape drive.
I have a stand-alone system with an ATAPI/IDE tape drive -- so it won't work.

Can anyone help with 5, 5a & 6? How do I configure the device so that Linux
sees it as a valid device? Where can I find KDAT?

Thank you! - Andy Lazarewicz

Also, do you use this for anything other than games?
I'd love any tips you've accumulated.

For Commodore 64 you should use The VICE, which gives 99,99% accurate
emulation.. The VICE is a system-independent emulator system that also
emulates Vic20, C128, PET and CBM-II :)

You can get it at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dsladic/vice/vice.html

After installing it, the c64-part is called "x64". Just run that one, and
you're off :) .. btw, you need to have some disk images as well if you want
to play anything.. www.c64.com has thousands of c64-games just waiting to be
downloaded!

(i really love that old machine :)

Ron, there is a "network install" for StarOffice. I haven't used it and don't
know the details but I believe it's designed for precisely this situation.

How about checking Sun's SO website?

[newbie] OK, another problem "su" is unresponsive

2001-03-11 Thread Paul Rodríguez

I upgraded the glibc libraries on my computer from glibc "2.1.3-16mdk" to
"2.1.3-18.3mdk" for glibc, glibc-devel, and glibc-profile. I tried doing
this from within MandrakeUpdate, but the install would stall, not giving me
any error messages. So I downloaded them from rpmfind.net (not the cooker
version, the normal mandrake ones). I exited X, from a virtual desktop I
typed (a la mandrake website):

rpm -Fvh glibc-2.1.3-18.3mdk-i586.rpm
rpm -Fvh glibc-devel-2.1.3-18.3mdk-i586.rpm
rpm -Fvh glibc-profile-2.1.3-18.3mdk-i586.rpm

Everything seemed normal, except, after re-entering X, I found I couldn't
access the "su" command. I get the following error:

"error in loading shared libraries:libxalflaunch.so.0:cannot open shared
object file:no such file or directory"

This only happens in Gnome. Trying to open DrakConf, rpmdrake, or anything
that would normally open up a password dialog window, doesn't do anything.

What happenned? How can I fix it?

[newbie] Configuration of a network adaptor

2001-03-11 Thread siham benabbou

Hi all,
I have trouble configuring my network board under
mandrake7.0. Here are the steps I followed:
1. I ran netconf and gave it the information needed
regarding hostname, the request for DHCP, and DNS
address.
2. I did "ifconfig eth0 up" in order to configure the
the interface eth0. But this gives me a message that
the device is busy.
3. I ping with 127.0.0.1 and it seems to work.
4. I run the "dhcpd &" and it gives me a message:
dhcpd.conf not found.

Could any one help me by telling me whether these
steps are ok or not and if not what should I do?

Thanx

Hi all,

I've been trying to find a way to get, for each sub-directory of a given

all its sub-sub-directories.

Is there a way to do this with du ,

Or any other way ?

I dont need/want the breakdown with all the sub-sub-directories listed, only
the total for each first-level sub-dir.

For users of Netscape 4.x, the following will get you up an running:

Log in as root and download the .bin Unix/Linux Realplayer binary file
from www. real.com
Open a console, and type in chmod u+x
Press the key
Type in: ./rp8*
Press the key

This will start up the installation. Proceed with the installation.

You must add several entries for streaming media/video and audio.
Hopefully, in the future real.com will improve their support(I wouldn't
hold my breath) for their Unix/Linux binary and rpms. For now, their
support is extremely poor or nonexistent for a "mega buck" company.

does anyone know of an app that can take a sendmail.cf file and configure

Hi, I believe that the audio has to have the cdrom unmounted. If you can't
umount from the desktop icon, you would have to be root and then from command
line umount the cdrom. Your cd should play music then, assuming I understand
what you are wanting to play.

I'd searched all over last year. I remember a few which
purported to work in Linux, but they wanted some unrealistic
amount of money for the app. I really don't get that -- don't
those of us who aren't made of money have to file too? Oh, no
money -- no privileges; I remember now.

Looks like. I'd actually gone the phone-in route this year, as
I'd only worked round six months last year -- as far as taxable
income is concerned. I rather liked that, & I'm getting back a
damn site more than I've ever.

While I've not been using Linux more than a couple of years,
I'd started back in later '94/early '95 with shell accounts in
either SysV or FreeBSD boxes. Each had talk, & I liked it.
Later, I found ytalk. It works a little better & supports a few
more features.

Maybe I'm getting old (though I've always been a bit
misanthropic;-), but when it comes to communication, I prefer a
text-based deal. I don't chat much, but I've tried some of the
gui apps, & some of the avatar systems on the Web. All in all, I
prefer ytalk.

But I've not taken the time to figure out why talk isn't
cooperative either in lm7.2 or in RH 6.0. It wouldn't be so bad
if talk actually worked -- primitive as it is -- but I, for one,
haven't figured out why it just sits & times out even when set up
on the boxes where the people are.

Anyone use DHCP to connect to your cable ISP? I do, (optimum online)

Oh, and when eth0 is initializing at boot, it hangs, and then says
something along the lines of timing out because it can't find a valid

What can I do about this? The java applet works fine in Netscape 4.76
(with its built-in Java VM) and even Netscape 6.01 (which uses the same
Java2 v1.3 I installed). With Mozilla 0.8, the page won't even load
though. Is it because https unsupported in Konqueror?

Wayne, did you try it this way
append="mem=128"
and, of course, this must be done as root. Then
run /sbin/lilo as root.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 and Netbeui

2001-03-11 Thread Dave

Just out of curiosity, why don't you just use TCP/IP for all your network
needs? Running NetBEUI will slow both systems down, because it's a very
"chatty" protocol.

[newbie] Soundblaster live !

2001-03-11 Thread Olivier Coulon

Hi all,
I have just installed Mandrake7.2 and met the following problem: my
souncard (Soundblaster Live!) is detected properly both by HardDrake or
Sndconfig, but it does not work and I got the following messages during
the sndconfig test:

The following error occurred running the modprobe program:

  /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: init_module:

  /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: insmod

Does anybody have any clue to solve that ?

Re: [newbie] Futura Monitor

2001-03-11 Thread Dave

If you search the documentation (or simply your Windows display
properties), you should be able to find the information you need to make
your monitor work under X. What I am talking about is things like:
- refresh rate, in kilohertz (KHz)
- maximum resolution
- maximum colors

If you can't get X to work properly during your initial install of any
Linux distro, just run xf86config from a command prompt. It will allow you
to manually specify your monitor settings.

Solved it! here's how to run ADOM on Linux Mandrake 7.2:
cp /usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm-color /usr/lib/terminfo/x/xterm-color

and optionally:
cp /usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm-color ~/.terminfo/x/xterm-color

2001-03-11 Thread keldmar

Was wondering if anyone new how i could set up
my monitor for mandrake.  I have tried to custom config to the specs on the
spec sheet my monitor came with, but mandrake doesn't seem to like them.  I
have also tried some general driver settings that mandrake offers, but i can not
get better then a refresh rate of 70hz, which is a pain in the ass, since an
85hz refresh rate is what i am after to get a pretty much flicker free screen,
so i can actually use the computer for a longer period of time without my eyes
getten sore.

any help that i can get on this would be
great

Hi,
yes I really meant that highly-compressed video format based on
Microsoft's old MPEG-4 format :).

Any ideas on Noatun? Seems like nobody I know have tried it yet (since
they haven't yet installed KDE 2.1).
