Before you go mad and edit your files try running the following command
as root
#Xconfigurator

You will know what to do after that,a grade 1 could use it,and it works
like a charm.
if not let me know and I will take you through the steps of installing
it in commandline.

You don't have to reinstall linux to fix the default fonts error. I have
a fix. Here are the many methods you can use:

/sbin/service xfs restart

or the long way;

/sbin/service xfs stop
/sbin/service xfs start

you can do another method but I will have to post that one later as my
daughter is demanding my attention. BRB.

[newbie] Sympatico and the D-Link 530-TX problems

2001-03-26 Thread paul pianta

I live in Quebec, Canada with high speed internet
provided by Bell Sympatico.  I installed Mandrake 7.2 on my PIII - 733mHz
machine and my D-Link 530-TX ethernet card (supplied by Sympatico) was not
detected.  After a couple of reinstalls it was always the same thing with
this error message when i try to configure the DSL connection:

"insmod'ing module via-rhine failed at
/usr/bin/perl - install /modules.pm line 479"

The via-rhine i know is the correct driver, but a
manual "insmod" or "modprobe" hasn't worked for me either.  The card is not
detected by hardrake and the configure option is not available to set it
up.

If you know of my problem or have a solution please
get back to me coz linux is not much fun without an internet
connection.
THANX

[newbie] HP 9350i Hangs system on bootup, reboot, drive access

2001-03-26 Thread DJW

I just install a HP 9350i (used to have a Memorex
1622) and it has totallymessed up my 7.2.During the boot, it hangs for
about 5 minutes during the mnt drives section(with or without a cd
init).  When I access the cd in the mnt directory after it
finallystarts it locks that program up  for several minutes before it
shows the contents.
If I turn the drive off in the bios (ide secondary)
everything works fine.I have gone into config andtold it not to mnt the
drive at bootup, but it still hangs up if the idesecondary is turned
on.I have completely formatted the drives and reinstall 7.2 (install
goesfine). It also will not shut down properly with the drive on.For
whatever reason, I installed Corel Linux and it works fine with thedrive,
but I prefer Mandrake's.Any ideas, suggestions, etc?
Also, the drive works fine in Mandrake 8 Beta 2,
but is a flaky system (hence beta, duh ;-)  )Thanks in
advance,Donald WrightP.S.  No I don't want to give you the drive
and put my 1622 back in, sodon't suggest that!

You could get one of those iddy bity little distros that fit on a floppy.
I've tried several and muLinux is great. You can even dial up and surf the
internet with lynx and do email and ng with mutt if it has a modem. You can
run it from the floppy (in ram actually), but with 4 megs...hmmm. But you
can install to run off of that little hdd. It even has X support with some
little window managers (that I haven't got to work yet... but many have).

[newbie] emailing the ifconfig file

2001-03-26 Thread Jennifer Davis

I seem to use my computer as much remotely as I do locally. In addition, I
use PPPoE to run my internet connection and there are times when it gets
wonky. I was just wondering if there was a perl script or something out
there that I could set in my crontab to mail me me ifconfig file every 15
minutes or so to tell me what my ip is. I also use a dynamic dns service
dnsq.org, but if let's say my hotmail account got these messages, then I
would know then network connection was okay. Will puting a .forward in my
/root directory do the trick?

Dear Barbara,
The simple way is to look under the shutdown menu at the
graphical
login. You will find access to the console mode there. Note that you may
have to press carriage return once to get a login prompt but after this
all you have to do is login. To start an X session from this prompt
either type "startx" or init 5 to get to your normal run level.

That is the sad case. RPM4 uses a different library practically guaranteed
to break any flavor of 7.

A new library and packaging policy went into effect with 8 so that future
enhancements can always be backported if they depend on new libraries and all
packages are not only rpm4 but also apt-get capable.

7.1 is a beautiful distro and one that will remain a classic for many
reasons. However, do give 8 a look when it is out. And I do have an article
on MandrakeForum.com (Two Mandrake Versions) explaining how to set up your
machine for more than one Mandrake as separate boots with a common home space.

But, no there is no workaround that has proved long-term viable using RPM4
for the rpm3 distros.

i don't remember the whole story with this, but i can give you the short version.

mandrake does not do RPM 4 yet.
stick with version 3
you can somehow force 4 to work, however the person who posted how to do this also
pointed out that it will trash your system. so the point is what? =)

if you want the detailed version, i'm sure someone here can provide it, or you can

What is your default run-level when you boot into

is so by looking in "/etc/inittab". This should then
laod up all your networking devices.

Does this answer your question??

Yipes!

What IS your configuration? get into rescue again, put a DOS-formatted
floppy in the drive and

# mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt
# dmesg > /mnt/dmesg.txt
# lspci -vv > /mnt/lspci.txt
# sync
# umount /dev/fd0
Boot back into windows (with the floppy out) Put it back in and attach the
files to an email directly to me.

Re: [newbie]RealPlayer

2001-03-26 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Marcia:

You need to install it as root:

$su
root password

then install it as follows:

#./nameoffile.bin

Then go back as user and install it as user:

$realplay

This will bring up the RealPlay dialogue box for you as user. I think I
am right. I may be wrong since I am still using Real Player 7.

The RealPlayer 8 ./bin version will install and play standalone files
but won't play embedded files. RealPlayer 7 does. But due to an "rpm"
installation conflict you can't install the RealPlayer 8 rpm file in
Mandrake, which would play all files. Just wait a few weeks and Mandrake
8.0 will be out. Then you can install RealPlayer 8 and have everything.

Yours,

Benjamin

P. S. Unfortunately, there is no way to get your hands on RealPlayer 7.
