Re: [newbie] java in Konqueror web browser
Urm I'm not sure - I'd installed the RPM for IBM's Java2 JRE without incidence, and the files have been placed into /opt/IBMJava2-13 so I'd set Konqueror 2.1.1 to use Java at the following path: /opt/IBMJava2-13/jre/bin/java and Java applets (finally!) worked for me. Maybe check whether it's been placed into /opt after all? Hope this helps. I use the SB Live Value too. But I can't seem to get MIDI playback working at all, and nothing's listed in the "MIDI" section of the Control Center. RE: [newbie] Linux is draggin' A$$
If you haven't set up "networking" properly (even if you don't have a LAN card) everytime you start up a program, linux queries it's resolver to find out if the terminal is authorized. Since DNS/Resolver is unconfigured it takes 2 minutes for things to time out waiting for the response that never comes. You need to fix this! Remember to assign the machine a hostname and domain and add an entry for it in /etc/hosts, etc. You might want to check the FAQ and erratta for complete instructions as this is a common "newbie" mistake. -JMS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Kelly, Christopher Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2001 2:03 PM To: 'Newbie' Subject: [newbie] Linux is draggin' A$$ What would cause pauses in Linux? Dan: There's nothing wrong with the software -- most of the people on this list are using the software that came with one or another Mandrake distribution for their net connections. [newbie] NEW LINUX VIRUS ALERT!!!
ALERT! A DANGEROUS NEW WORM IS SPREADING ON THE INTERNET March 23, 2001 7:00 AM Late last night, the SANS Institute (through its Global Incident Analysis Center) uncovered a dangerous new worm that appears to be spreading rapidly across the Internet. It scans the Internet looking for Linux computers with a known vulnerability. It infects the vulnerable machines, steals the password file (sending it to a China.com site), installs other hacking tools, and forces the newly infected machine to begin scanning the Internet looking for other victims. Several experts from the security community worked through the night to decompose the worm's code and engineer a utility to help you discover if the Lion worm has affected your organization. Updates to this announcement will be posted at the SANS web site, http://www.sans.org DESCRIPTION The Lion worm is similar to the Ramen worm. However, this worm is significantly more dangerous and should be taken very seriously. It infects Linux machines running the BIND DNS server. It is known to infect bind version(s) 8.2, 8.2-P1, 8.2.1, 8.2.2-Px, and all 8.2.3-betas. The specific vulnerability used by the worm to exploit machines is the TSIG vulnerability that was reported on January 29, 2001. The Lion worm spreads via an application called "randb". Randb scans random class B networks probing TCP port 53. Once it hits a system, it checks to see if it is vulnerable. If so, Lion exploits the system using an exploit called "name". It then installs the t0rn rootkit. Once Lion has compromised a system, it: - - Sends the contents of /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, as well as some network settings to an address in the china.com domain. - - Deletes /etc/hosts.deny, eliminating the host-based perimeter protection afforded by tcp wrappers. - - Installs backdoor root shells on ports 60008/tcp and 33567/tcp (via inetd, see /etc/inetd.conf) - - Installs a trojaned version of ssh that listens on 33568/tcp - - Kills Syslogd , so the logging on the system can't be trusted - - Installs a trojaned version of login - - Looks for a hashed password in /etc/ttyhash - - /usr/sbin/nscd (the optional Name Service Caching daemon) is overwritten with a trojaned version of ssh. The t0rn rootkit replaces several binaries on the system in order to stealth itself. Here are the binaries that it replaces: du, find, ifconfig, in.telnetd, in.fingerd, login, ls, mjy, netstat, ps, pstree, top - - "Mjy" is a utility for cleaning out log entries, and is placed in /bin and /usr/man/man1/man1/lib/.lib/. - - in.telnetd is also placed in these directories; its use is not known at this time. - - A setuid shell is placed in /usr/man/man1/man1/lib/.lib/.x DETECTION AND REMOVAL We have developed a utility called Lionfind that will detect the Lion files on an infected system. Simply download it, uncompress it, and run lionfind. This utility will list which of the suspect files is on the system. At this time, Lionfind is not able to remove the virus from the system. If and when an updated version becomes available (and we expect to provide one), an announcement will be made at this site. [newbie] Linux is draggin' A$$
What would cause pauses in Linux? When ever I try to open something, be it a program or a directory, it always pauses and it will take 2 mins to open. My system is a PII 233 with 64megs of RAM. This should run fine from what I've heard. Let me know what to check. Thanks, Moose
Re: [newbie] Floppy flopped, Linux hosed
Hello again, I went in as single user and deleted about 250 Mb of files, and it booted up fine. When I got in, I ran a df command and it said I had 660Mb left on / and about the same on /home. Now, when I rebooted yesterday, I get the exact same error messages as before and I have not installed anything since the clean-up. How can I have 660Mb free one day and be out of space the next, without installing anything, or even doing anything outside of some html editing and checking email? ( BTW, for those of you using Grub, which I am, you have to boot into failsafe mode and then into "maintenance" to get in as a single user. ) This took me a while to figure out. Re: [newbie] Coffee Coaster
You know, I burned a copy of LM7.2 once and had install problems as well... CD-ROM burned fine, but the installer froze up on some syntax errors (missing end of if/right bracket BS) in the perl installer... [newbie] Installing blackbox
I'm sure there are loads on sources online to tell me how to do this, but i can't find a one that works for me, for whatever reason. I'm running Mandrake 7.2 with kernel 2.2.18 on a compaq LTE 5380 laptop. I've got a pent133 with 80 meg of ram and a 2 gig hdd. My problem is that KDE 2 that comes with mandrake 7.2 is so huge my ram is almost all gone as soon as KDE loads up. So i want to try blackbox. I've got it downloaded and extracted and all that fun stuff, and i've done all the .configure things i could find to do. but how do i set up X to load Blackbox instead of KDE? i can't get it to load for the life of me. If anyone has a link or howto or anything, i would appreciate it. thanx _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Civilme; Where in Quebec? I'm in Montreal. There have been similar complaints from other people in the LUG I belong to. If you're D-Link continues to give you problems, get back to me. I can arrange to have the card checked, and replaced with something more reliable. We've seen lots of the D-Link's screw up and there was a bad batch of them around Montreal for a while. Sympatico was replacing quite a few a couple of months ago. If the card is good, and still won't work, we can replace it with a DLink 538TX, which will work fine. In the mean time, make sure that your BIOS has the "Plug 'n' Play O/S" option turned off, and then "Reset Configuration Data" is enabled.
