[newbie] Re: Supermount problems

2001-04-21 Thread Jay DeKing

Hmm, I didn't mention my cd-roms. But, I do have a problem with the one
that's a burner; if I try to access it my machine locks up. Hard. The
only way to break out of it is a cold boot (power switch). Civileme
tried to help me with it but I never did get it to work.

As far as the fd* entries in /dev, there are a lot of them. I only have
one floppy, and it's called /mnt/floppy, linked to /dev/fd0. It is the
only device attached to the floppy bus, so you would think that fd0
would be correct. The fstab entry for the floppy and zip are as follows:

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
/mnt/zip /mnt/zip supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/zip 0 0

/dev/zip is a link to hdd4. Is that correct? I know that the zip drive
is connected to the EIDE bus at hdd, but why would it be hdd4?

Thanks
Jay

Ditto on the SSH recommendation. One wonders why telnet is still used,
except on MS platforms where telnet.exe is touted as "new technology the
gods invented" or some such :).

Luckily, there is a *very nice* set of tools for Win32 platforms that do
telnet/ssh, scp and sftp, called PuTTY. These are very small utilities that
can fit easily on a floppy and are free to use. It doesn't do X, though.

PuTTY can be found at: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

Luckily also, with Unix there is little need for hacks like PC Anywhere.

[newbie] Is my hosts.deny working??

2001-04-21 Thread ai4a

Hi:
I use my system as a simple desktop machine & connect to the internet
through a ppp line & a 56K modem. Does this mean that I connect to the
internet and no one needs to connect to me??

In my hosts.deny file I have:
  ALL: ALL: DENY

In my hosts.allow file I have nothing:
# there are no entries in my hosts.allow file

I can still connect to the internet and all works fine. Is my hosts.deny
file working? Do I have a deamon turned off? How can I test if
hosts.deny is working?

See the file 'config.log' for further diagnostics.

[newbie] Modem Busy

2001-04-21 Thread Lee

Hi Folks,
Ok..the specs 1st. Zoom isa 5919. I have 2 drives w/grub as a bootloader. I
have 98se on 1 drive and LM7.2 on the other. Modem is fine in 98.

I still cannot get this modem to be seen by LM7.2. I've tried moving to
different irq's,com ports and I get "modem is busy" This is with the modem
set to com2,irq3. Tried initializing it in harddrake, kppp, control
center,and probably a few others.
When I had the modem set to com 3, irq 5 I got the message "modem is not
responding" I need to have this modem working in both 98 and LM7.2 Is this
being done by anyone here ?

I'm not sure where to go from here as I'm going in circles. Any
tips, suggestions,or free external modems :) to try will be greatly
appreciated. Thank you and hava great wknd !!

Adam,

For the beta's plus rc1 i used expert mode for
install.  I was then able to choose which boot loader, Grub LILO with
Graphics, LILO with regular menu, or other.

Hopefully this will work for you too.

The betas of 8.0 have been using lilo as a
bootloader... but one of the things I liked about LM 7.2 was that it used grub
as it's primary boot loader and all I had to do was tell it where my other os
was and it loaded neccesary files with a chainloading system.  Lilo
cannot do this.  So did they switch to grub for the full
  release?

Also, it looks like they completely re-vamped
bootdrake making it completely worthless.  Is there anyway that I can
install GRUB from the getgo during the install process and use the same
easy-to-use front-end that the 7.2 install had?...  for me it was such an
easy way to dual boot rather than copying all of these image output files and
  what not.

  Any help is greatly
appreciated.

No, Grub was included in the betas, I don't know if it was an option with
"recomended" install but I used it every time with "expert" install

..
Yes ,if it isn't an option during "recomended" install just use DrakConf to
configure your bootloader post install, Grub & Lilo are there (also Aurora is
in there), if you are using a beta, the boot options in DrakConf don't work
but it is straightforward to resolve:-
Download (I got mine from rpmfind.net) the latest versions of DrakConf and
it's dependencies which are:-
drakfont
drakfloppy
harddrake
drakxtools
drakxtools-newt
upgrade these first, then upgrade DrakConf, it's straightforward as they are
rpms

Re: [newbie] more upgrading madness ...

2001-04-21 Thread Tim Holmes

You can go with the route the other guy mentioned, or you could do
what I do at times.

First step, find out what's installed.

rpm -qa | grep kdelibs

>From that output, then uninstall those RPMS.

rpm -e kdelibs-

After it's done removing those packages, you don't have that crazy
mess about "failed dependencies" since you no long have them.

You can then do your rpm -ivh kdelib*.rpm to install your software.

I would say this more of a boarder line expect move. So if you're not
comfortable with removing something like sound and devel-sound packages,
the I would not go with this. But I will say I've had good success with
doing that.

Hope that was helpful.

[newbie] 7.2 install problem - Cdrom & X-server

2001-04-21 Thread John Rye

I finally took the plunge and installed 7.2. Installation was uneventful
other than the soundcard not being found. that was fixed without hassle.

However. there are two problems ..
Problem A) Cdrom is inaccessible despite running through the Cdburner
tutorial pages.
Error message as user or root:

[john@john john]$ ls /mnt/cdrom
ls: /mnt/cdrom: Input/output error

brw-rw1 john cdwriter 11, 7 Sep 27 2000 scd7

I don't understand why user john should own /dev/scd(?), so far I
haven't dared to change the ownership

Fstab as follows:
-
/dev/hdc5 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hda7 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda9 /home ext2 defaults 1 2

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat user,exec,umask=0 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat user,exec,umask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0

/dev/hdd5 /usr ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda10 /usr2 ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda11 /usr3 ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
-

Problem B) X-Server (I think) - I cannot see where the issue is:

My Vidcard is an S3 Virge DX with 4mb Ram, the monitor a CTX 1451,
resolution 16-bit 800x600; these two have been working together without
fault thru LM6.x and until I installed LM7.2, (and obviously with that
other opsys).

I think (grin), that I selected XFree 4, can't be sure as I have both
XF86Config AND XF86Config-4 in /etc/X11.

I cannot start X automatically (init 5) as the monitor (Or vidcard) goes
directly to a ?powersave? mode.

When I login to the CLI (init 3), I can startx and run KDE without
problems, however if/when I exit from KDE I have the same problem as
above and the only way I can regain control is either a
three-finger-salute or hard reset. Ctrl-Alt-Del restarts without causing
me any hassles.

Can someone point me to some help here, I know I've seen it covered
before but haven't been able to find the references.

Cheers

John

Re: [newbie] Windows hates Linux

2001-04-21 Thread Tim Holmes

Why are you trying to install 7.0? Just curious.

I have heard and experienced once myself, where the CD will not eject and then
wouldn't let me do it manually. I had to reboot the machine and start the
install all over again.

I do not *THINK* this is caused because of lack of HDD space. It should give you
an error when you select packages if you don't have enough space. I'm starting to
think it's due to slow CD-ROMs, but I'm not entirely sure of that.

I was first having this problem with a 6X DvD drive, that later spritzed out on me,
so I think it was reading things really weird, and caused that problem. The other
CD-ROM I saw it happen with, it was a 12X I think... if that.

If you go with 7.2, KDE and GNOME should be installed automatically. If you wait
for Mandrake 8, which is coming this month I believe, you will have the updated
KDE and GNOME.

Mandrake 7.2, and higher now auto-mounts file systems. 7.1 may have as well, but I
don't remember it doing so off the bat. Windows however, especially Windows9x, can
not, and does not read any other file systems other then FAT. (16 or 32.) I have
heard of applications that will allow Windows to read EXT2 file Systems, but I have
never tried them myself. I don't even think Win2K will read EXT2.

But as the other gentleman mentioned, you can install Tweak, or TweakUI. You can
search for a "NEWER" version at www.download.com/ or you can use the one that comes
on the Windows9x CD that you have. Just search the cd for tweak and you should find
a *.inf file I believe. RIGHT-MOUSE click it, select Install and it will do the rest.
Check your Control Panel and you can then use that to hide the drive all together.

Hope that helps you out!

Re: [newbie] Telnet

2001-04-21 Thread Tim Holmes

Well you have a few options.

1) Remote Connections:

You can find shareware, freeware, or purchase some sort of remote connection
software. There are tons of them. Personally, I use SecureCRT. They make
software that will allow you to SFTP from a Windows machine to a UNIX/Linux
box, as well as it supports SSH very well. (I would suggest you move to
SSH for various reasons.)

There's QVT/Term, which was my first VT100 emulations software when I first
started working at an ISP almost 4 years ago. It's very customizable, and I
believe it is FREEWARE.

There's also Hummingbird, which makes create software, and even comes with an
X Serve app, but is very pricey. Last I heard it prices around $700. SecureCRT
is about $50 I believe, check their website for information. www.vandyke.com/

But those are some options for connecting to other UNIX/Linux boxes. If you
can't find QVT/Term, let me know. I may have it stored some place and can make
it available via my webserver.

2) Remote Control:

There are applications like VNC that will give you access to other OS systems.
I have installed and tried VNC, and over all it's a good application. But I think
it's more for somebody trying to control an Windows machine from a Linux box. You
can control a Linux box from the Windows box, however it doesn't let you take over
a current X session. (Or if it does, I'm not sure how to do it.) You are given
TWM by default, but you can comment that out an add startkde to run KDE instead.

However, it sounds like you just want a way to access a command line from a
UNIX/Linux box. So applications like SecureCRT and QVT/Term are the way to
go.

If you would rather stick with telnet, then I think QVT/Term will be great
for you, however I strongly suggest you visit www.openssh.com/ and start
working with SSH. At which point SecureCRT would be a better application.

Hope that helps!

Have you tried using HardDrake? You may be able to configure it further
there so it will then recognize your modem.

However, is it possible this is a configuration problem in the dialer yo'ure
using? When I was dialing in via modem, I used kppp. In kppp there's an
option to test the modem, and it will tell you if it will be able to dial
and send the appropriate commands. Have you attempted something like that?

[newbie] Epson 600 printing prob -CUPS in Mandrake 8

2001-04-21 Thread Sam

Hello all,
I have just installed Mandrake 8 and have set up an SMB printer (the printer
is on a networked Windows 98 machine). The printer is an Epson Stylus Color
600. It is detected fine and I can send print jobs. However, I am facing 2
issues with it right now that I hope somebody can help me:

1) the printing comes out very jerkily. This is to say that the printer would
print 1-2 lines and then halt for a few seconds before printing another 1-2
lines and so on. I am using the "CUPS+GIMP-print v4.1.5" driver with dither
set to "very fast" and resolution at 180 DPI.

This did not happen with Mandrake 7.2, nor with printing from windows (my PC
dual boots at times).

2) The print output is simply sub-par even if I switch to 720dpi and toggle
between the different rendering options. It has been like this in Mandrake
7.2 but it irks me now as I'd hoped to print something other than "drafts"
from linux. Moreover, I'd also been convincing friends to give Mandrake 8 a
go. A problem like this would turn them away from linux most definitely. :(

I hope somebody can advise me here. Thanks in advance! :)

[newbie] kapm-idled, 8.0, can't rebuild kernel, locking up.

2001-04-21 Thread abram olson

what is this kapm-idled thing and why can I not kill
it? Why can I not disable it? Why is it absolutely
there against my will? It takes up between 50 and
100% of my cpu on all monitoring progs making them
USELESS and eventually causes my system to lock and
crash. I uninstalled ALL kde packages since I don't
particularly like kde and still there is kapm-idled
mocking me.

How can I make this go away? Oh yea, the system
kernel panicks off of ANY newly built kernel and in
most cases is actually unable to complete rebuilding a
kernel. So don't tell me all I need to do is uncheck
a box in make xconfig and recompile. I've read the
kernel devel mailing lists and the mandrake expert
lists in regards to this. "Just rebuild your kernel"
is not an option on a system that is incapable of
rebuilding a kernel if you use any of the default
install options.

I'm really pissed off about 8.0 right now. It's a lot
faster then 7.2 when it works but hardly anything that
I do with linux works in 8.0. I did an expert install
and installed everything (20 gig HD the whole disk got
installed) and I still had to hunt down extra packages
just so I could rebuild RPMs. WTF is that? Then the
kapm-idled thing starts up and my system starts
locking up. ug. Why did all the install options go
away? Does it have to be only "Expert" or "I'm an
idiot" options? "I'm an idiot" won't even let me name
a partition anything but what is in the drop down box.
WTF is that? Why is the "Expert" install basically
the normal install from 7.2?

Anyway, if anyone can help with my questions I
appreciate it and if anyone actually read this whole
email I congratulate you on your perseverence. Sorry
to bitch so much but I traded a functioning mandrake
7.2 for a worthless 8.0 today and I'm pissed off about
it. I've been working on this for almost 12 hours
now.

Marcia,

I think the latest release of Mdk8.0 is beta 3. Last I heard the final
release was scheduled for June.

[newbie] VIA 686B southbridge problem

2001-04-21 Thread Maureen L. Thomas

Hi all,
I recently installed a new motherboard from FIC. It has the VIA 686B
southbridge chip and according to the Register it has a bug in it. I have
found fixes for windows on the FIC and VIA websites but cannot find a way
to fix the bug for Linux. My Mandrake is acting strange and I haven't
changed anything except the motherboard and cpu (AMD 850Mhz) . Any help
would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get rid of windows but
can't until I can fix the bug.Thanks
Below is the article I read. Sorry this is so long. VIA, as of today,
has not posted anything regarding a fix. Either that or I was looking in
the wrong place on there web site.
 Data-corruption bug hits VIA chipsets
 By: Tony Smith
 Posted: 12/04/2001 at 11:52 GMT

VIA has confirmed a data-damaging glitch in its 686B
Southbridge
chip - a major part of the Taiwanese company's KT-133A
chipset -
and is working with mobo makers to prepare BIOS
updates to fix the
 problem.

The southbridge part is used in the vast majority of AMD
Athlon-oriented mobos, primarily the KT-133, but it
can be used with
northbridge parts from the Apollo Pro 133, KX-133A and
AMD-76x
chipsets too. VIA said it is investigating the problem
to see how
 many chipsets are affected.

The bug was uncovered by German hardware site Au-Ja!
It's not
exactly a common problem: the date corruption affects
large, 100MB
and up file transfers between two hard drives
connected to separate
IDE channels exchanging the data by DMA. Having a
Creative Labs
Soundblaster Live card in place seems to exacerbate
the problem.

VIA's BIOS fix works by adjusting a number of PCI
settings, which,
according to Tecchannel, suggests the problem is a
result of
 competitive PCI access.

VIA told The Register that it is a BIOS issue, and it
will be posting a
fix on its Web site sometime next week. ®

[newbie] System sounds with LM 7.2 and KDE 2.1

2001-04-21 Thread Richard Bozzato

I've just installed LM 7.2 with KDE 2.1 from Mandrake Freq. All is OK
but I cannot get system sounds to work in KDE. They do with Gnome, and
I can play CDs etc with no trouble. I had to download and install
"arts-2.1-2 mdk.rpm" as it wasn't on the CD but this hasn't fixed the
problem . Also arts does not start on KDE start up, even though this
option is selected in the KDE sound server control centre.

[newbie] ok, so mandrake 8.0 is out, need info

2001-04-21 Thread Adam Willcox

[newbie] disk quota and ftp welcome message.

2001-04-21 Thread Luc Martineau

Hello all
I have disk Quotas for some of my users. I was wondering if there was
a way to insert a line in the FTP welcome message that would let the
user know how much diskspace they are using and how much is left?
(sort of like geocities and similar hosts do)
I am running mandrake 7.2 and the default ftp client
thanks for any help.
