[newbie] Looking for a Notebook to run dual boot LM 8.0 and Windows

2001-05-20 Thread Scott Canady

Hey everyone.
Have any of you installed a dual-boot Linux Mandrake
8.0/Windows XX on a notebook? If so, and if the
install was fairly painless (or if you could describe
the pain), would anyone be able to recommend a brand
to me? I'm fairly clueless about notebooks in general
(this will be my first one), so any info. you could
give would be helpful. Thanks.

I just installed Linux-mandrake 8.0 on my second hard drive. I am running

this drive in mandrake and if so, where will I find it?

Re: [newbie] No sound

2001-05-20 Thread s

What version, what sound card, what type? What have you tried?

Things are almost automagically configured in 8.0, but in 7.2 and back you
could start by trying (or even in 8.0 too) typing /usr/sbin/sndconfig
into a console and see if it gets set up. If it shoots you and error, come
back with it and some specifics. Troubleshooting depends on type of sound
card it is really. Is it recognized at all anywhere: in harddrake, in kde
systems control, in cat /proc/pci (if pci card), etc, etc,

Thanx to everybody that replied.

I bought the mother board and I'm currently running on that machine now.
The only problem I had was making sure the NIC and the soundcard didn't
conflict with the other hardware, after I got that worked out, the machine
is up and running. Quite I might add! I didn't have any problems that I
had with isntalling Mandrake 8 this time that I Did the first time.

It may be me as well, but it seems that the drives are accessing a lot
faster on the Promise controller then they did previously with out! And
to think I could add another 5 IDE devices if I choose! :0)

When I bought the processor, I asked for the 850 THUNDERBIRD, but the

Tuan; If you know the IP number of your Jetdirect card, you should be able to
browse to it using ANY browser. Once you get there, make sure that the IP and
SubNetmask of the jetdirect card is set up within your network's IP range and
subnetmask. Then, use the CUPS - WWW Admin Tool under Configuration/Printers
to set up the printer. Assuming that CUPS includes the proper drivers for
that exact printer, you should have no problems getting it to work!

Marciathe KDE Archiver is activated by right-clicking the
icon of an archive file and choosing Archiver from the
resulting menu. The archiver works as a front-end for
different programs that actually do the work. If the program
that is needed for handling a certain archive isn't found in
your path it's probably not installed and you'll get a
not-in-path error. In your case you probably need to install
zip-2.3-6mdk.i586.rpm which is on one of your 8.0
installation CD(s).

Re: [newbie]printing with Cups in LM8

2001-05-20 Thread Lanman

Marcia; I've read about your problem, and I'd like to offer the following
suggestions:

1) Go to the ftp site below, and download ALL the files to a separate folder,
then run the software updater in Mandrake control Center. It's a fast site,
and usually not busy.

ftp://ftp.twoguys.org/pub/linux/distributions/mandrake/updates/8.0/RPMS/

2) Check to see if your running "lpd" or Cups. Go to Mandrake Control
Center/System/Services. Your NOT looking for "cupsd", but rather plain old
"cups". "lpd" is great if you want other PC's to be able to print on your PC,
but may not be needed by your Epson printer to work "locally", or directly on
your PC ( assuming that the printer is connected to the PC in question). Try
disabling "lpd" and just run "cups". When needed, it should run "cupsd" .
Run the updates first, and delete your Epson printer, then do a fresh config
for the printer. Assuming that Mars and Venus (?) are in proper alignment,
and even a small piece of good luck, you should be in business.

As Always,...Good Luck!

Marcia; Your Archiver must have been screwed up on install. Use "kpackage" to
uninstall archiver and any associated dependant packages, then reinstall from
your CD's. I don't beleive that theere's an update for archiver yet, so the
one you have is probably the newest . You'll find it in "/usr/bin/".

Marcia,
do you mean using Archiver with .ZIP files in LM8? You'll first have to
install the zip package using Mandrake Software Manager - it isn't
installed by default.

I was in the same boat as you. I bought 7.2 thinking it was a full and
complete package and only later found out it wasn't. At the time I didn't
have an high speed Internet connection, so purchasing was my only recourse.
This time, however, I downloaded it first and checked out what I was supposed
to be getting and then bought it. It's all there. I believe this to be a
"complete" package. And, I'm not sure if they did this or not, seems a little
more stable than the version I downloaded. Not sure if it could just have
been a better installation.

Hello, John! The package "kernel-source-2.4.3-20mdk.i586.rpm" is in the
"Mandrake/RPMS2" directory on the extension CD (the one in which the complete
directory listing starts with the "7colors" RPM). I got mine from Linux
Central .

I hope experienced Linux users are not going to laugh in *Mandrake's* face
when they notice that, although "ncurses-devel" is among the dependencies
listed for "kernel-source," it isn't easy to locate the "ncurses-devel"
package for Mandrake 8.0 (unlike 7.2, which had "ncurses-devel" right after
"ncurses" as one would expect). You're going to need "ncurses-devel" (unless
you can get by with a "--nodeps" installation of the kernel sources), and I'm
going to need it too. Let me take this opportunity to ask this question one
more time, in hope that somebody on this list can answer it for you and me
both:

*** Where is the ncurses-devel package for Mandrake 8.0?! ***

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer this question!

The changes will activate after you open a new Konqueror

You can download this program:
http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86/
It is a stand-alone test program -doesn't need Windows OR Linux to run.
Start it up and let it run overnight. If there are problems with the memory

it should find them.

Try going to control centre->look and feel->style and check anti-aliasing,
then choose your fonts from the font tab

RE: [newbie] Computer Freezes under Linux 7.2 & WindowsME

2001-05-20 Thread Franki

I don't think the PC100 or PC133 thing is the issue,,,
Unless your CPU needs PC133 (ie it has a 133 or 266 FSB or front side bus),
it will only use 100 anyway, so it doesn't matter what you set it as...

One thing to try, is upgrading your bios to the latest version,, Some
motherboards don't know what to do with a 256mb dimm, or they do it wrong,,
so upgrading your bios is the way to fix it..

Its not that hard to do either...

find out your motherboards brand, model, and revision (if applic)
then go to their web site, and download the new bios for your board...

Make a dos bootable floppy, (with nothing else on it.)
then unzip the file you got from the manufacturer, and copy the files to the
floppy..

usually the files will be awdflash.exe and a file with the extension .bin

the bin file is the actual bios file...

boot from the floppy, and when you get to a dos prompt, type: awdflash

Then just answer the questions,, it will ask if you want to back up the old
one,, and then it will ask for the filename of the new one, enter that, (and
the extension .bin) and continue,, and it will write the new bios,, (do not
reset the computer or cause a powerdown until it tells you its ok to you
can waste your mainboard if you stop it in the middle of writing)

If you did that, you will have a new bios (see the new date on the start
screen), so then go back into your bios, (hit delete on boot and you will
get it.)
and set the defaults again,, then change whatever is necessary for your
setup, then save and exit,, and you'll be off and running. It may fix your
issues... and it can't hurt anyway,, I do it all the time with all my
systems.

The instructions above are for Award bios's (if you want to know what type
you have, cold restart you PC and read the start screens.)

AMI and the others are very similiar for updating the bios, and it can often
fix alot of issues that you normally wouldn't have attributed to a bios
problem.

one last thing you can try... is slowing down your memory to see if it
helps,,, go into bios as described above, and I think its chipset settings
that you want, in there, set you memory for lower performance, (higher
numbers generally mean lower performance.) if that makes no difference, all
you need to do is select "setup defaults" to change things back again.

hope this helps

Frank

[newbie] Default Viewing Font - Kwrite/Konquerer

2001-05-20 Thread Ed Kasky

How does one change the default font for viewing files in Konquerer and
Kwrite? Mine is right now set to a very small courier and nearly
impossible to read unless I open the file in another editor. I would
like to be able to view files using Konquerer but can't seem to change
the default font for view a file's contents...

In settings/configure konqueror/appearance there is a tab for appearance
which lists fonts for various things but none make any changes to the
font in the viewer or in Kwrite.

[newbie] (the sometimes) infuriating Mandrake menus...wish

2001-05-20 Thread Sam

Thankfully, I haven't had the problem of manually-added menu items Not
appearing, be it for user or system, since LM8.

However, what I'd like to ask is why is it even necessary to have to do
this in the first place? I mean, menus are added automatically after
installing applications in Windows, so why doesn't this happen with
(non-Mandrake packaged) RPM packages in Linux? If the program icons
simply can't be created in the menu system automatically under the
appropriate menu categories, then maybe they could all be "dumped"
under an "Unfiled" category for later sorting?

I know I might sound picky here. But I recall being so confused when I
first started out with LM7.2, trying to figure out where the icons of
new apps are supposed to be. This just might scare off Windows users
trying out Mandrake. Just a thought. :)

Hi,
Launch the Software Manager, click on Define Sources

selection that you want, i.e. ftp, http, Security, or

wait while that list downloads to your list of

toggle to All and Updates only and then click on Flat

[newbie] Port forwarding...

2001-05-20 Thread Franki

Hi all,

I have a rather perplexing problem,,

I have a server on a static IP DSL conection, this machine is among other
things a primary domain server...

We have a number of servers running behind this machine, all on private IP's
(ie 192.168.0.5)

I need to have two way comunication between ports on the internal machine,
and the outside gateway

The internal machines are running all sorts of different operating systems,
from Win2000 server to win95, and linux.

The gateway machine is running 7.2 with EVERY patch loaded, including the
2.2.19-4 kernel.

Anyway I have searched the internet left right and center,, and found
hundreds of pages about port forwarding. and thats the problem,,,

There are hundreds of methods available and all sorts of different kernels,,
(in fact most of the pages I saw required patches to 2.0 kernels...

So at the end of it all, I am left wandering what is the newest fastest
method of doing this

Mandrake is no help, and the only reference I could find on thier site, was
about packages. which was less then useless...

Assuming I have Mandrake 7.2, and kernel 2.2.19 What is the easiest way I
can have several ports on internal servers transparently communicating 2way
through the gateway machine.

like Http, SSL, smtp, ssh, and some ports specifically for special servelets
and stuff...

No machine on the entire network has less then 64 mb of ram, and a 233mmx
cpu so horsepower is not really an issue, since most of the machines,
have at least a pIII 450, and most are 600 or more.

The gateway machine has two network cards, one to the dsl connection and the
other to the internal network.

I am more confused now then I was when I started looking into this

Can anyone help.

Frank

Thanks Tom, that was the clue I'd been seeking.

I bounced around for several days looking all over the net, I didn't look at
Config>Printers in detail because the first few entries referred to printers I don't
have (Lexmark, Oki and Epson Stylus), I assumed (mistakely)from those entries that
that section was to setup "Non-Standard" or "Special-Case" devices.

Wouldn't it be nice if the CUPS web interface made some reference to Kups? After all
it does sortof come from or with the same stable.

[newbie] rebuilding redhat src package for a mdk system. (netcfg)

Hi everyone,,

I really miss redhats netcfg package, having used RH from version 4.3 up
until 7 when I switched to mdk7.2 I have used netcfg for nearly everything
up until now...

and now I don't have it anymore.

I personally think it is far better then mandrakes effort on 7.2 (dunno
about 8 yet) particularly with things like dialup and stuff, netcfg lets you
see what you have already, something missing from the "Network and Internet
configuration" from Mandrake

I want it back, so I was wondering if I downloaded the rebuildable rpm from
redhats site... and rebuild and install it on a mandrake system,,, will it
work??

I find myself wanting to try this, but I don't want to risk it either...

I am not writing this to put down mandrake, I just want netcfg back

can anyone help??

has anyone tried this?

Re: [newbie] LM 8.0 + Cyrix 150Mhz

Hi,
the early Cyrix processors generated lots of heat. When I went through
my Socket 7 CPU upgrades, the largest heatsink/cooler I'd ever bought

Randy,
what I did was follow the prompts using the "KUPS - CUPS

"Add printer" from your SMB network. Scan the network and double-click
on the PC with the printer. Then click away.

I'm writing this from memory. I wish I could be more specific, but for

[newbie] Computer Freezes under Linux 7.2 & WindowsME

2001-05-20 Thread PENA FAMILY

I just recently added an additional 512MB (2x256MB DIMM PC133) for my video
editing needs. Both Linux and WindowsME recognized it and life was good and
my video editing dreams were coming true.

BAMM! Then Linux starts freezing up and so does WindowsME. Couldn't figure
it out then I checked BIOS and realized that it was set to PC100 by default.
I checked on my motherboard for jumpers but this motherboard does these
changes through BIOS. So I changed it and then for a week everytime I
playback one of my videos the system freezes even in LINUX! I went back to
the store where I got the RAM and they told me it was probably a
compatiability issue. I exchanged them for premiums and still get the
crashes but this only happens when playing back any .mpeg or .avi file.
Under WindowsME I am used to this but until recently LINUX never gave me
that trouble nor have I seen it freeze before.

Any help would be appreciated since I have looked everywhere else.

Thank you
