THere must be a way to automatically add addresses to the

Re: [newbie] microsoft hassling Aussie Charity.

2001-07-15 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

Please don't post HTML to the list. As you can see below, it looks like
unnecessary junk.

This is about a *charity* that is giving computers to *poor* people. Chances
are that these people have hardly ever touched a computer, leave alone owning
one (no insensitivity intended). Do you think they can afford a copy of
Windos, when they can hardly make ends meet? I don't think so. The computers
these people are given would either be very cheap or (more likely)
second-hand. Adding the price of a copy of Windos on top of that could easily
double the cost of the machine. And that's excluding the cost of any
applications.

Using GNU/Linux is not hard to use at all -- almost everything can be done
graphically. Most problems people have with GNU/Linux arise because they have
grown used to Windos, not because it is hard.

Re: [newbie] kernel doubts

2001-07-15 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

Mandrake patches a few little niceties like Supermount into its kernels. They
may have also included some ac patches. If you can go without those, then
you're fine.

If you get Mandrake's kernel-linus package you'll have an unpatched kernel,
just like Linus Torvalds' official release. Alternatively, you can get the
kernel-doc, kernel-headers and kernel-source RPMs from Mandrake and compile
those. That way, you may be able to get your winmodem to work and still keep
Mandrake's patches like Supermount.

Jhun,

In that case, I'm pretty sure you'll have to recompile from source. The
latest apache is available from
http://httpd.apache.org/dist/httpd/apache_1.3.20.tar.gz, and the php module
is available from http://www.php.net/downloads.php.

You should also make sure if you want to database driven web pages, to get
either postgresql (http://www.postgresql.org) or MySQL (http://www.mysql.com).

A step by step guide is available from
http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/PHP/SoothinglySeamless/ .

Perfect! Now I can access files on my Linux box using AppleTalk.
If you want to know how there are some references included.

found the rpm here

http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/sourceforge//netatalk//netatalk-1.5pre6-1mdk.i586.html

/etc/rc.d/init.d/atalk start

and it worked! :)

I had to do a pwconv for it to work properly.

[newbie] Sounds In Yahoo! Messenger???

2001-07-15 Thread Curtis Matthiesen

Hi there,

When I first installed Yahoo! Messenger I had sounds for my events (when
people logged on, sent me messages, etc.).

But now when I reinstalled it I don't have any of the above, I was wondering
if someone could help me so that I can get these sounds back, as they're
really useful for me.

FYI, I'm using KDE and Mandrake 8.0.

Jhun,

In Mandrake 7.2, there is an Apache rpm that is preconfigured for php. All
you need to do is install the correct apache package, then install the
appropriate php package(s) as well, and do the final configuration per the
documentation.

I would assume Mandrake 8.0 has a similar set of configured packages, if
you are at that version.

Re: [newbie] Dial-up error "pppd daemon died expectedly" modem settings

2001-07-15 Thread Carroll Grigsby

Minhaz:
1. Something went wrong with my Mandrake 8.0 installation, and I'm still
trying to sort it out. As a result, I'm having to access e-mail from the
Windows side of the house which means that my Linux stuff isn't currently
available. (Besides, do you really want a configuration file from a bad
installation?)
2. Please try the M1L3 thing. For some reason, the kppd dialer sets the
maximum volume to M1L4, and that is wrong -- at least for some modems. When
I first encountered this problem a year or more ago, it took me a while to
figure out why all of those dead pppd daemons were accumulating on the
floor. Once I made the correction, my world became a much better place.
While I'm not positive this will resolve your problem, it certainly worked
for me.
3. Since it has been a while since I went through the kppp initialization
process, I may not have this quite right, but I believe that there is an
option to have a logon window opened during the dialup process. I strongly
recommend doing so, as it can be an invaluable aid in sorting out these
kinds of problems.
Regards,
Carroll

[newbie] I need an easy-to-install VPN client for Mandrake 8.0

2001-07-15 Thread Jim Lynch

Hi all,

I just got Mandrake 8.0 and I'm having trouble
figuring out how to set up a VPN connection to my
corporate network. I telecommute most days and I have
been using the built-in VPN client in Windows 2000.
But I would rather use Linux instead.

Please remember that I am NOT trying to set up a VPN
server (I posted in a forum and somehow people assumed
I was setting up a VPN server). All I want to do is
figure out how to get connect to my corporate network
via VPN.

BTW, my company's VPN concentrator currently supports
both PPTP and IPSEC. Not sure if that helps but there
it is just in case.

Thanks in advance if you can help me. I'm a newbie and
not well versed in the command line. I'm looking for
something that is relatively idiot-proof. ;-)

There should'a also been adapter and chipset drivers that needed to
be added to /etc/rc.d/rc.local also. For example, mine currently are

# I2C adapter drivers
modprobe i2c-viapro
modprobe i2c-isa
# I2C chip drivers
modprobe lm75
modprobe eeprom
modprobe via686a

for my BX based board they where:

# I2C adapter drivers
modprobe i2c-piix4
modprobe i2c-isa
# I2C chip drivers
modprobe eeprom
modprobe w83781d

Hope this helps, 'cause I'm fixin to go to St Loui in the mornin for

Is there a way to setup Appltalk (or something) so I can

I have apache setup on my linux box but the macs won't connect but, I
can ping the Macs from the linux machine. Not really sure whats going

I changed the hangup strings so that the file could be sent to you. You
will need to put them back the way they should be. They should look the
following but with '+' signs instead of the '&' signs as shown here:

EscapeString=&&& < this is 3 '+' signs>
HangupString=&&&ATH < this is 3 '+' signs followed by ATH>

I use Mandrake-Linux 8 and it correctly uses 'M1L3' to set the maximum
speaker volume, so you should set yours to 'M1L3' as the other email
suggested.

Be careful about copying lines from my kppprc into yours - things like DNS
numbers and so on will be completelt different.

My /etc/ppp/options is exactly as sent previously, but here it is again.

I noticed that in an earlier posting by you that the maximum modem sound is
set to M1L4. Change it to M1L3. In (at least some) modem command sets, L

[newbie] kdesu problem

2001-07-15 Thread Michel Clasquin

Hmm, kdesu is no longer accepting my root password. Opening up an xterm and
using su - in the normal way with the same password works just fine, so I can
still get root access to my apps, but I'd like to know what is causing this.

Xinerama was designed to support this feature basically I think it
creates two simultaneous Xservers. You might want to try looking for an
Xinerama package, I'm pretty sure it's available somewhere in RPM. Good
luck, hope that helps.

I guess that's what the generic SVGA driver is for. I don't know how to

Re: [newbie] kernel doubts

2001-07-15 Thread Tim Holmes

That was a real helpful response.

What makes you think you need to recompile your kernel to install your
WinModem? The drivers for the modem say that's required?

Basically the difference between the 4.4.3-20mdk and the 4.4.3 is that
the -20mdk is more customized for Mandrake.

As far as gaining and loosing functionality with a new kernel of any
kind, that all depends on what you compile it to. If you check out
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386 there's a file in there called defconfig. From
what I understand that's the basic kernel that comes with. The "Out of
the Box" kernel.

When I recompiled my kernel I used this documentation.

http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/install/kupgrade3.html

It worked pretty well. However the src for the present kernel should be
on the Mandrake CDs you purchased or downloaded. As well as you can get
them at www.kernel.org/.

Personally... you may save yourself the heartache in just purchasing a
hardware modem. I've recompiled the kernel in 3 distrobutions so far,
and honestly, Mandrake's process did not go well. I don't know if that's
because of me, or the distro itself, but I spent two weeks working on it
before I basically gave up. It may be worth your time to spend the $60
or so for a new hardware modem. However, that's just a suggestion from
somebody that didn't have the greatest of luck with the Mandrake
recompile.

[newbie] RE: SNF install woes

2001-07-15 Thread jason-snyder

The latest thing that I have done is to dig up an old P100 system and
stick
the harddrive into it along with two network cards. (Used DFE-530TX+
instead of eepro100.) After changing modules.conf to load the right
modules, everything came up happy. I then tried ripping out the hard
drive
and both NICs and sticking it back into 1 GHz Athlon system. It did the

same thing as it did before. Moving everything back to the P100 lead
back
to everything being happy again. Under clocking 1 GHz system to 950 MHz

also didn't seem to make a difference.

Windows ME and mdk 8.0 seem to come up on my 1 GHz system without a
problem.

Any insight on what is going wrong with SNF on my 1 GHz linux test /
windows system?

Tim,

This looks like what happens when you edit something in Joe--it
automatically creates a copy of the file being edited as filename~. This
is basically a backup file, and it will stick around until you delete it.
I seem to remember reading that there is a way to turn it off in one of
joe's config files, but can't remember which one.

Acouple of things.
First, you are likely to get more answers 9and some might even be correct) if
you and whom ever you are conversing with will hit the reply to all, so the
messages go to the whole list, then we all can benifit from your problems and
answers. and go ahead and quote the mail that you think is important in the
reply.
Secondly, don't be afraid to modify a script at a text console this
really is one of the best ways to learn and control your system. And you will
become a real linuxer soon too.
if you do include demand in the conf file, make sure you also include an
idle=300 ( or some number, it is seconds of inactiveity before the modem
drops the connection).

Re: [newbie] sorting a file/list in a special way

2001-07-15 Thread Tim Holmes

Personally I like using vi or vim. But that's because I find it faster
then any other editor. Now it's not the only one that I use, but it is
the main editor that I use. If I'm editing really large files, I'll use
nedit, but I honestly use nedit more for viewing then anything.

But with typing over 80 words a minutes, and vim being all keyboard
strokes I fan fly through doing what I want with no problem. I just
don't find that the others are quick enough for me.

It was also the first editor that I was introduced to. I saw that before
I saw pico. And I can't stand pine or pico. I only install them on
network servers for those that don't know/like vi/vim.

But I'm interested in this script that's being written. I've taken some
scripts and modified them for my own use, or for other *nix systems. All
the scripts I've written from scratch, are for work and would have no
practical use to the rest of the world. But keep up the good work. We
all give to the cause! :0)
