[newbie] Linux in schools
Hi Everyone, I think this is good. Esp. the one about Mexico City. Paul http://www.wired.com/news/linux/0,1411,43737,00.html Argentina Embraces the Penguin By Agustín d´Empaire 10:40 a.m. May 11, 2001 PDT BUENOS AIRES -- Salta is an Argentinean province located in the country's northwest, a desert area near the Andes. Not surprisingly, no penguins live there and most Salteños have never seen one before. However, the penguin named Tux is starting to draw a lot of attention, because a professor at the Universidad Nacional de Salta (UNSa) is distributing the Linux OS -- whose mascot is Tux -- throughout this region. -- http://www.wired.com/news/school/0,1383,45862,00.html Penguin Enrolls in U.S. Schools By Angel Gonzalez 02.00 a.m. Aug. 20, 2001 PDT Tux the penguin may become the preferred mascot of America's financially strained public education system - for Linux represents a way to avoid paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for software. More than 98 percent of the schools in the U.S. have Internet access, according to a recent Department of Education report. But software costs can be prohibitive, especially now that Microsoft is stepping up efforts to stop license infringement in schools, forcing them to pay for every single copy of Windows they run. http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,42456,00.html Mexico City Says Hola to Linux by Julia Scheeres 2:00 a.m. March 16, 2001 PST Mexico City's municipal government announced plans to switch city computers to the Linux operating system and to use the money it saves to fund social welfare programs. In an interview with the Mexican daily Reforma, the city's technical coordinator, José Barberán estimated that the municipality would save millions of dollars "that are spent, in my opinion, unnecessarily on software." [newbie] Konquerer, php, and fonts
Hello- I am making a little database browser with php and mysql. When I use it in Netscape it works normally, but when I use Konquerer all kinds of code is echoed to the screen when a php page executes (or rather doesn't execute). Does Konquerer have to be configured to handle php correctly? Or what? While I'm complaining about Konquerer, how come ms fonts are not available? I have imported them and they're available in other apps, but they do not show up as a choice in Konquerer config. Can anything be done about the fonts that scale so poorly? Anyway, the problem I'm having occurs before I log in. What used to happen before I had this problem was that the machine would boot up, and when it was done I would see the graphical user/password login screen with the cartoon penguins representing users. If I remember clearly, there was also a dropdown chooser that I could use to select KDE, Gnome, etc. on that screen. (There was also a shutdown button, which is what I really miss most.) NOW what happens is the exact same thing, only instead of the login screen I describe above I get a KDE login screen. Remember, I haven't logged in yet, so putting anything in my home directory isn't going to help me -- what I need to know is what's the system equivalent of the .xinitrc or whatever, and how I need to set it to get the old login screen back (along with the ability to choose window managers and shut the machine down without logging in). This is LM7.2 if that helps. Mark Shaw Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://.mandrakestore.com

Some modems are real hardware and some are cheap, glorified sound cards that need hundreds of kilobytes of code to do a modem's job. Since that software is usually written only for windows, we call those "winmodems" though that is also a trademark of USR. You probably successfully installed both times It is loaded as a binary in some directory, likely /usr/bin, so scroll through that using the file manager untilo you find it (It won't be /usr/bin/netsacpe cause that's taken by 4.77) Once you have the executable in sight, then open up Mandrake Control Center and click on System - Menus - Configure System Menus. Add it using the directory path to the netscape6 executable as the "Command" line. Then Save and exit. Now you can use netscape. But, I must ask this. "Why bother?" Mozilla is on the distro and updates are readily available from Freq and Cooker and is likely to be a more recent iteration of the gecko engine than Netscape. What you get for using netscape is all the glitz and hype and popups and ways to expose your email to spammers that AOL can possibly think of. Plus of course you get the underlying Mozilla, probably not as recent as is available from other sources. [newbie] Coding resources?
Hi everybody, I installed Mandrake 8.0 on my old P166, 64M because I want to do some portable C code. Maybe my question will be a little bit off-topic, but I'd like to know if there are websites for newbie programmers on Linux. I knew how to use the display under dos by accessing the memory directly or using the dos libs, but the functions I knew so well were only available under dos also. I heard that you have to use n/curse to do the same things, but I don't know where to start. Any help would be great. Re: [newbie] Mailing list in Spanish.
I am not sure if is a good idea to make a mailing-list just in Spanish; I had a look to the italian and french list and I think that there are lot of very good knoledgers of linux mandrake that don't know Spanish, Italian or french, so the mailing-list with more interesting participation is the English one. So I think the Spanish list could works, but it could never reach the level, interest and speed to give solution that has the English one. [newbie] booting windoze
I sent this yesterday but did not see it appear in my newbie list mail, so here it is again. Because of reasons of my own making I had to do a fresh install of mandrake 8.0. I set up Grub to make Linux my default OS. When I attempted to boot into windows, the bootup made it to "chainloader +1" and wouldn't progress beyond that point. I tried using LILO, it made it to "Loading Windows" and wouldn't progress any further. I am using an ABIT KT7A Raid MB with an IBM hard drive plugged into ide2. [newbie] Install lockup problem reposted
In the 'welcome to newbie' post you received after subscribing, one of the first things it says is to post with plain text only. Sorry about that. Here's my question reposted as plain text. I'll make a point of checking the format each time before posting. Here where I work they require us to send html email and I simply forgot about it. Hello all, I recently purchased an A-Bit mobo (KT7A) along with a 1.2GHz AMD and 512MB. I performed an LM 8.0 install using the "Recommended" selection and at the point near the end of the install when it configures XWindows the system locks up hard. By which I mean the mouse ceases to respond, no keys work, I can't switch to different consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F), etc. I thought maybe it was the graphics card (S3 Trio3D/2X, a fairly new, low cost 3D Graphics/video accelerator card), so I replaced it with a known working card, to no avail. I then tried a known working PCI graphics card (name/mfg escapes me at the moment) and experienced the same problem. Has anyone had a similar experience and found a solution? This is driving me nuts :-) Thanks, Tim Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] IBM Netfinity 5100 with ServRAID controller
I am trying to install Mandrake 8.0 on an IBM Netfinity 5100 with a ServRAID 4L controller. There are six 36GB drive attached to the 4L in a RAID 5 configuration. The system, controller, and drives are all at the lates level of their BIOS. Problem #1 When I start the install process, Mandrake recognizes the on-board Adaptec SCSI controller, but not the ServRAID controller. If I pick it from the list, everything appears to be fine. Problem #2 After I have configured my partitions on that big logical drive, Mandrake attempts to format the partitions. It will format my swap (512MB) and / (3GB) partitions, but when it tries to format /home (166GB) it eventually bombs out. The activity on the drives will stop and about five minutes later, I get the following message: An error occurred mkdir: error creating directory /mnt/home: input/output error When I click the OK button, I get the following error: An error occurred An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem. I have tried this same install on an IBM Netfinity 5500 with the same internal setup with similar results. I am wondering if there is a problem with IBM's ServRAID controller and MDK 8.0? I noticed on Mandrake's hardware site, the ServRAID controller is listed as having been tested by users, but not certified by Mandrake. By the way, RedHat 7.1 works fine. I would much prefer Mandrake, though. -- Best regards, Brent mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] Which Linux?
Adrian: I'll let others sing the hymns of praise about the obvious superiority of Mandrake over other distributions, and just point out one big advantage of Mandrake that isn't often mentioned in the reviews: Support -- between this mail list, the Mandrake Forum, the online tutorials and MandrakeUser.org, you can usually find an answer in a short time. Here's a short (and incomplete) list of recommendations that will make the transition easier: 1. Buy one of the boxed sets for your first install. The extra CD's and the manuals are very useful. 2. Check your hardware against the compatibility lists. Based on the postings here, the major troublemakers are winmodems, sound cards and video cards. 3. Before you pop the Mandrake CD in the drive, be sure that you have a valid Windows boot disk, and that you have an adequate backup of your Windows data files. Sometimes stuff happens. 4. You mention that you've used Mandrake before. Any chance on getting some help from that source? I know that Suse is popular in Germany, it has a good setup and stable base also. I fought redhat a few times and did not get it to see my ISDN card. Mandrake told me "Ah, ISDN. I've been a recovering Windoze-holic for almost two weeks now. I had installed but only sparingly used Mandrake 7.0 a year ago. I had tried and failed to install Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2 (display problems mostly), plus another local (Denver, Colorado) release based on Red Hat. Now I'm on Mandrake 8.0 8.0 proved to be the easiest install, with the most built in functionality. 7.0 didn't have Star Office and kmail, istr. With 8.0, I've had to do very little searching out of feral rpm's to install - almost everything that I really need came with the original package. That convenience was a major plus, and let me drop windows as soon as I was satisfied that I had my basic system working. Part of this may be my own improved ability to find sources of support that I didn't know about a year ago, too. Both the newbies list and a similar local list have proven useful, as has usenet. You definitely want to seek out your local LUG as well though - they tend to provide solid knowledge and assistance. Since you're in London, check out http://gllug.linux.co.uk/ I'm taking my machine to a local install fest in a couple of weeks (CLUE - Sept 15, if any Denver locals are reading this) to resolve a couple of low priority configuration issues. - -- "One Code to rule them all, one Code to bind them In the land of Redmond where the Shadows lie" - Joe Thomson, ASR. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: PGP 6.5.8 iQA/AwUBO4ES0H+bkeP849+WEQJlggCaA/6NxtwdXcman5IRMVCpbPYhvxoAnAvZ 3CTJUQQHVIdvQT3kE8oSbUr7 =2kYR -END PGP SIGNATURE- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Which Linux?
I'm new to Linux but I'm ready to make the giant leap forward and chop my HD up to make room for Linux. My question is, I've used Mandrake, 7.2 I think, and I would like to know if this is known to be easy to use. I liked what I saw, but does anyone have a better suggestion. I liked the installation process, nice and easy. Is there any reasons to choose this over Corel, Red Hat ect Thanks, and go easy on me, it's my first post :o) Adrian Lynch -- United Kingdom http://www.thoughtbubble.co.uk/ Ph: +44 (0) 20 7387 8890 -- Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
