Re: [newbie] new linux drivers for nvidia cards Version: 1.0-1512 (LONG POST)

2001-09-06 Thread Robert MacLean

Hi

I downloaded and tried the new drivers last night, as well as the very
impressive PDF file that is now available.
My System (for reference I 'm only listing things related to the speed
of graphics):
AMD k6-2 550Mhz
384Megs of Ram
Fujistu 14 Gig HDD
GA-5AA (Gigabyte ALI) Mobo
Geforce 2 MX

I'm using the out the box Mandrake 8 kernel.
Install of the drivers was fine.
I used Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, Reflect, Gears, Morph and
glTron before and after the upgrade as tests and they all worked fine.
I used Gears to do a small before and after bench mark as well.
Before (12.41 Version Drivers) (FPS are taken in 5 second groups for
the first 15 seconds)
642.5 FPS
779.4 FPS
857.0 FPS.
Which gives you an average of 759.6 FPS over the 15 seconds.
After (15.12)
709.8 FPS
889.2 FPS
878.8 FPS
Which gives you an average of 825.93 FPS over the 15 seconds.

That means there is a 66.33 FPS increase between the different
versions.

There are also 2 new features that I found that I really liked.
First there is now support for a hardware cursor shadow, I tried to
get a screen shot of but northing takes screen shots of cursors,
which looks really good. It takes time to get use to it.
The other feature is now the ability to get your refresh rates
straight from your monitors EDID, instead of the XFConfig-4 file.Which
means you should not have refresh rate problems anymore, or problems
with going into a resolution that your monitor doesn't support.

On the whole it is worth the upgrade ;)

Managed to get the SmartDisk FlashPath adapter for SmartMedia. Neat.
However, there was a bit of a problem getting the Linux driver from
the www.smartdisk.com site. The driver page was inaccessible, and a
message to the Webmaster revealed that the driver is no longer
supported, so the link to the download page was an oversight. Also
included in the kind response were three attachments; the driver
itself, and PDF and HTML documentation. SmartDisk can no longer
spare the effort to keep the driver up to date - it is only expected
to work on 2.2 systems. They specifically state that it will not run
under kernel versions 2.1 or 2.3. It works for me, albeit rather
slowly (20 seconds for the transfer of an 800K image file). If it
works under 2.4 kernels maybe somebody could post a note about it?

Jeez, I wanna get rid of Windows too. However, our business accounts are
in Windows and although I'm planning on using GnuCash, I don't want to
re-key in all transactions for the current financial year so have to wait
until April next year! Other than that, I have no need for Windows
whatsoever. I don't even play games on my pc. What makes it worse is
that I have to boot Windows _every_ day to access our accounts. And while
in there, if I urgently need to send an email or look something up in the
net, I have to boot back into linux because I refuse to connect to the net
with Windows - I most certainly agree with Tom on that one!

A while back, I got Wine to work with our Windows accounting software but
after reinstalling linux I can't seem to get Wine to work anymore :-(

I'm _really_ looking forward to getting rid of Windows and if I _really_
need to use it (would have to be an emergency), I have the entire
partition on CDRs (image file) which only takes minutes to copy back onto
a hard drive. After all, why take up hd space with something you're not
going to use?

Congradulations.
You should be able to see it from mandrake, cd = change directories,
/mnt/win_c/=first windows partition on mine (cd /mnt && ls to find yours),
cp = copy, -r = recursive (descend into directory),  -f = force (don't
confirm). So an example:
cp -rf /mnt/win_c/Archives/mp3 /home/s/ (that would copy my mp3 folder
from the Archives on windows C:\ to my linux home directory) or
cd /mnt/win_c/Archives/mp3(to change to that directory) and
ls (list what's in that directory for browsing) or
ls -hal (list all, even hidden, and attributes in human friendly terms)

Howdy gang! Quite an evening. Got Linux installed, X-windows working,

So, I need to access some large data files on the DOS side of this

I remember in another life using a doscp commmand (SCO Unix, I think,

Any suggestions?

I've been a 100% Linux user now for a year and half. I was an "advanced
newbie" when I converted from a dual boot machine to a full time
Mandrake box. I'd done UNIX administration even before that.

But after all that time, I've still found a use for Micro$HAFT products!

MSN sent me a disc about 8 months ago I think. The one with the kewl
stylized butter fly on it. It's the coaster I use on my end tables! lol
When I watch a movie, that's where I place my beverage! Looks pretty
sweet actually.

Other then that, I have no use for Micro$HAFT in my life. Meanwhile my
girlfriend still uses Windows98, I'm working on getting her switched
over to Linux as well. I've already switched my 19 year old sister
over. She's been on a Linux box for 8 months now!

Re: [newbie] Choosing flavors and Window Managers

2001-09-06 Thread jennifer

Randy...I just read the first few sentences of that article and knew i had to
respond. I work for a good size company (5000 or so users) and will tell you
that not all of them are secretaries who use word, excel spreadsheets and the
like. I also think it is condescending to subrscribe to that articles implied
knowledge that "secretaries are dumb, so secretaries would not know the
difference" I am an experienced windows user/professional desktop supporter
and I have trouble with the basic functionality of linux. I can only imagine
what it would be like to be desktop support for such an O/S. I wouldn't know
where to begin let alone be a new user to all the programs that linux offers.
I am here to learn the O/S, not how to create a spreadsheet in Koffice. Do
you know how to do that with absolute proficientcy? Why expect your users to
do so when they are the ones making million dollar investments so your
comapany makes money and can pay you your salary?

In mine line of work, the end user is the my money maker. Keep them in
business and I get paid. Enable them to do what they do best is my job. Thier
downtime hurts business. I work for them, no the other way around.

That is not to say that linux is not right to rollout comapny-wide. It takes
time, patience and knowledge. Could you imagine rendering a company useless
to perfor high dollar trades on wall street becuase they couldn't recreate
their all important calculates with Koffice?

In my book the customers are all important. i work for no moron, no idiot, an
no I D 10 T. I support a business and the people who run that business no
mater what their "staus"

Now mind you, I want to learn this O/S as well as I know windows. Challanges
intrigue me. But, as a newbie, I must concede with Mark that

As far as I know, for most users, there is no use aside from gaming,
and even for gaming, there are native Linux games, and apparently
quite a few Windows games run under Wine. The other exception is that
there are quite a few applications that can ONLY run on Windows for
some specific purposes. Perhaps you need Autocad, or some other
specific app which is Windows only.

But if you're just an ordinary user who surfs the web, does word
processing, this kind of thing, you don't need Windows at all.

yes this helps! i take your point about using * like that, the backquote

Look for a package called "libc". This is needed to run some old apps like WP8.

Re: [newbie] paste in console?

2001-09-06 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

The main aim of the LSB is compatibility across _distros_, not across multiple
platforms within a distro (BASH, X, GNOME, KDE, etc.). What you propose would be
covered by other bodies such as freedesktop.org.

BTW, directory structures are covered in the FHS (Filesystem Heirarchy
Standard), which has been adopted as part of the LSB.

[newbie] Using Visioneer USB scanner?

2001-09-06 Thread Peter Rymshaw

I have a Visioneer 6200 scanner and not only that
model, but no Visioneer scanners seem to be supported
by Linux (or SANE). Is there any "generic" software
that might work? Would something besides SANE be
difficut anyway?

I also have a Umax Astra 1220P , which is supported by
SANE 1.05 (I have 1.04, need to check that). But I
replace this parellel port scanner because it was so
slow and don't really want to go back to it (and
besides, I reinstalled it and am having problems with
SANE/Linux with this too. If I've got to struggle, I'd
much rather expend my energy toward getting the USB
Visioneer working.)

Any clues?

Sorry, not familiar with unzip syntax. However, a
couple of comments on your script that might help.
Firstly, never safe to just do * like that, as there
may be other files there that you DON'T want
processed. Far better to use backquotes and the ls
command, viz:
for file in `ls *.zip`

Secondly, if the -d option isn't working, how about
doing this: for each file, create a unique
subdirectory, move the zip file there, go there and
run the unzip there. Script might look like:
for file in `ls *.zip`
do
  set base=basename_$file
  mkdir $base
  mv $file $base
  cd $base
unzip $file (or whatever the syntax is)
  cd ..
done

Not elegant, but simple (I'd test it first on a couple
of files copied somewhere safe to play). Elegance is
over-rated if it means impossible to understand
oneliners that try to do everything!

Hope this helps,
Ron.

[newbie] Gator for Linux?

Is there a program like Gator that works on Linux? I'm

ID and password.

The latter is part of Netscape 6.1, but I miss the
convenience of filling out forms without typing.

Well, when I loaded bash-2.05, I didn't have any hostname issues as such, but

Re: [newbie] Switching to KDE 22 usual look and feel

2001-09-06 Thread Joseph Braddock

You need to run the Login Manager (in KDE it's under the control center, I'm
not sure where it is in Gnome). Select the Sessions tab and at the lower
part of the window, type KDE for the new type and click the Add new button.
KDE must be in all caps. Save the settings and log out and see if selecting
KDE now works. Assuming it does, go back to the Login Manager and remove the
entry for KDE 22.

RE: [newbie] SiS 630 on Notebooks

2001-09-06 Thread Navin Daryanani

exactly. Somehow after many many tries I got these steps (IN THAT ORDER) and
finally got it to work. I do not mind booting into the console first. Rather
I prefer that.

BUT the problem with me still remains that once I get into X there is no way
I can get back into the text only mode. I mean, if I do get out I can
restart X by grovelling in the dark. It is not too much of a problem, and it
certainly does not deter me away from linux, but it would certainly be nice
to get it working in the proper way.

oh! one more thing. I tried watching a dvd movie with xmovie (I think) and
the window which came up showed the movie in SPLIT up DIAGONAL everything
was slanted. But if I took it to full screen I could see it working
properly. Again, not a very big problem but it would be nice to have it
working in the proper way. MAYBE if I go about starting from scratch, like
compiling a kernel, would help. But till this moment I have not tried it so
it is kind of an awe. :-)

If u can please redirect us to some indepth secrets of how to tweak it (like
the steps u have laid down below) it would be certainly helpful.

thanks

8.0 Video will work

First install and let the recommended configuration be made for the SiS.

Next, go to console and login as root (select NOT to have X start at boot)

from a console use your favorite editor to edit

/etc/lilo.conf

add the line or change the vga line for the linux boot to

vga=791

remove the lines for linux-nonfb booting

save & quit

when the root prompt comes back up

# lilo

#
then reboot

Once you are in console, startx will get you to X and you can use Mandrake
Control Center to modify how you boot. Some folks are happy to boot to
console all the time and then modify various fikles to choose the
WindowManager they use, and several seem to like the Xtart rpm in cooker.

You might try to pop your ISP that your sending through first then try

believe me, I am the last person to defend microsoft,, I really don't like
them much at all..

HOWEVER, keeping your servers up to date and patched is imperative,
regardless of wether you are
using NT/2000 linux/unix or pretty much anything else...

The problem is that M$ convinced people somehow that their server os is a
plug and play system,
they set it up, turn it on and forget it..

That is far from the truth,, we have several linux servers (my doing) and
several NT/2000 servers
(the other tech guy) and the whole lot of them are as patched as we can make
them.

I think our network is pretty good, not the best but certainly not the
worst..

and we work hard to make sure that all the patches micro$haft see fit to
"endow" us with because of
their apparent decision to do their bug testing after realeasing their
software, are loaded..

We missed Code Red I and II and a good many others, (according to the logs.)

also, the Windows box's sit behind linux boxes using port forwarding to get
connected.

We will NEVER buy XP, and any system that comes to use with XP preloaded
will be wiped and have linux loaded.

works great :-)

I'm the first one to recommend to newbie's (or oldies's) that they
keep Windoze around, just don't EVER connect to the Net with it (ASAP).

'Specially if that's with Win2k, any other NT, or the soon to be XP
(assuming anybody's dumb a'nough to buy it). This deal with raw
sockets is nothin new. Most of the problems (slow) currently being
experienced by all Net users (including Penguins), are cause by
ignorant Billy OS users flooding the net with Billy's B$ OS's crap.

Many Win2k-NT users don't even know they've got servers running, or
that M$ email programs, or other 3rd party email apps that run on M$
OS's are killin the NET with all their inherent virus, worm and trojan
propensities and capabilities.

Windoze is still good for playin games on tho, don't microwave
Billy's CD's just yet ;>

Any Linux distro is only as secure as the USER makes and maintains
it. Deb's claim to fame isn't security, it's being a step or two down
from the latest to provide stability (or so they claim). Mandrake is
the cutting edge of security as far as most leading distros go. YMMV

I don't know how you came to this conclusion. My take is you can
switch Linux distros with little notice. Ask a IT manager about
switching Windoze versions.

As far as functionality and command structure, basically none.

The binaries and the library calls are different. Oracle is bdependent on
some by now ancient linux libraries which have to be added to most distros to
get it to run.

Does anyone know how to add menu items to Enlightenment? I have recently
installed StarOffice, and would like to add a menu item to be able to run it,
rather than having to open a terminal window everytime I wish to run it.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I meant "konsole", the X term in KDE. I understand the mouse can
be run in true console mode, I've never done it, I think it has

[newbie] Choosing flavors and Window Managers

2001-09-06 Thread Mark Johnson

I'm not sure I truly understand the advantages of all these different
flavors of linux. I understand that Debian is the super secure, and
Mandrake is the super friendly, and Redhat is enterprise oriented. But what
I find is that flavors mean non-standard directories and other nuances. The
only "linux" part of a flavor is the kernel. This is actually pretty
annoying because one can never truely say "I know linux" in a deep sense;
all one really knows is one's particular flavor of linux. My impression is
that if you switched flavors on somebody they would be nearly as lost as
they would be if you switched their PC for a MAC even though it's still
"linux". Is this flavor thing good for linux in a long term sense?

This goes for window managers too: if the Window Manager is the gateway to
the system switching WMs on somebody is pretty close to switching the OS on
them.

One of the main reasons that I bring this up is if you were to choose to
deploy linux desktops for your company, you should probably think long an
hard about the flavor and the WM that you are going to standardize on
because if you let people run different WMs willy nilly (much less flavors)
it would be a adminstrative nightmare.

You can't really count (never will be able to count) on any baseline
functionality of access points amongs WMs can you...?

Has anyone deployed linux desktop company-wide before? Do you have any
juicey stories to tell about what worked and what didn't?

[newbie] ksmserverrc and kde session start

2001-09-06 Thread bascule

i am a bit concerned at what i believe to be unnecessary processes that i see
when i run ksysguard, i believe they may be related to the entries for kdesu
that are in my ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc file, if i start kde and do
nothing but launch xmms, kmail and everybuddy and ksysguard i still see lots
of kdesu processes running, is it safe to manually delete these entries or
are they necessary for kde to operate?

a couple of kde cooker updates ago kdesu seemed to be broken and i had to
restart a few times so the above situation seems to have arisen from that,
but i don't wish to break kde if i am wrong,

my ksmserverrc is as follows:

another thing that confuses me is that everybuddy starts every time i start
kde - since i chose 'save session' on logout with it running, but it doesn't
show in the above file, is there another file that kde uses to save session
details?

i know this file at least is involved since i manually edited it to add ',-p'

[newbie] NVidia Drivers 1.0-1512 and newer kernels works for 2.4.8-17mdk

2001-09-06 Thread civileme

OK, folks, I can't really help you on this one. I think closed source
drivers are the quintessence of evil and I'll have to put a wreath of garlic
on my computer, and sprinkle it with holy water after this cross-post.

But here it is FWIW

Hi

Here is how I did it, on an older installation that already had the old
drivers installed and patched for devfs.

This is basically based on this mail:
http://www.mail-archive.com/cooker@linux-mandrake.com/msg41917.html

I went to:
http://www.cyber.com.au/users/ashridah/

>From which I downloaded the file:
 nvidia_devfs-patch_1.0-1512.patch

I renamed the file to:
 nvidia_devfs-patch_1.0-1512.diff

and used the the command, in the directory above /NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1512, the
result of unpacking NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1512.tar.gz:
patch -p0 < nvidia_devfs-patch_1.0-1512.diff

Then I entered the above directory, and "make install".

I opned the NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-1512.tar.gz and subsequently "make install".

If you are doing it on a fresh install the above mail adds two things to do.

I don't have a good answer for that Matt other than I'd put in in
the USER, not OS column. For a long time now I've just used one or the
other. If hi-lite and the middle click fails, Ctrl+c and Crtl+v works,
or a combo of both. One way or the other I get it done across all
apps, any OS.

Since I rarely use Windoze anymore 'cept for flying airplanes, I
only vaguley remember the situation is the same with that OS also. It's
not a Linux, Windoze, or any OS deal. It's differences in the software
apps they run, and/or USER deftness and intuition.

Unfortunately only some of the time. Other times you need to use the middle
mouse button which is a bit unintuitive (and has no equivalent key command).
Still worse is cutting and pasting is dependent on the app, and cutting and
pasting between apps sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

I'm very interested in resolving this and setting up universal cutting and
pasting across all apps in my linux environment, I just haven't found the
time to look into it. As it stands it makes working in Linux rather
inefficient.

Update to Freq2 or Freq3. There was a fix for people who had USB mouse and
PS/2 keyboard (on all sorts of computers) that broke the IBM TrackPoint
facility. The updates in Freq fisx it. You might also try the Updated
kernel-2.4.7-12.3mdk, but please do _NOT_ not even during an air raid ever
update a kernel. ALWAYS install them. That way the old kernel is still
there and you can return to it if the newer one causes problems.

Furthermore, do nto attempt to get your laptop to show battery power through
linux. In particular, do not load lm_utils. We are the only distro not
putting that in by default and the reason we don't is to protect IBM laptops.
If you use the lm_utils and lm_sensors facility to monitor your hardware,
you _will_ overwrite the I2C bus Prom and will have to return your notebook
to IBM for a new motherboard.

What resolution are you running at?
If your color depth selection is not 16-bit, you have very little chance of
acceleration.

Civileme

The fact that dri and glx weren't there suggests you chose another color
depth.

2 ways to copy from a terminal. hi-lite the text and Ctrl+c, or
just hi-lite, and then use middle mouse button to paste, or use Ctrl+v

You can also copy from a teminal output, and paste it back in on the
CL in that same or even a different terminal.
EG, when I d/l a src.rpm to /home/tom/dl and rebuild it from there,
the rpm(s) are written to /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686/
Rather than cd'ing to that dir I just stay right where I'm at and
hi-lite the rpm that was written, then I type 'rpm -Uvh and then paste
in /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i686/.i686.rpm and hit
.

[newbie] Squid + https, cannot connect to https url's

2001-09-06 Thread DStevenson

HI all,

Can anyone help with the above subject please?

I have Squid and DansGuardian installed. DG is listening on 8080 which
connects to Squid on 3128. The SSL connection is directed to 3128 as per DG
website FAQ. I am expecting Squid to tunnel directly thru the proxy with a
CONNECT statement. When I connect to any https url, Squid denies the
connection as access denied. My squid.conf file is as default except for the
listening port (8080 default -> 3128 ). I have played arounf with the
settings:

#Defaults:
acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
acl manager proto cache_object
acl localhost src 127.0.0.1/255.255.255.255
acl SSL_ports port 443 563
acl Safe_ports port 80 21 443 563 70 210 1025-65535
acl Safe_ports port 280 # http-mgmt
acl Safe_ports port 488 # gss-http
acl Safe_ports port 591 # filemaker
acl Safe_ports port 777 # multiling http
acl CONNECT method CONNECT

The access.log shows the following:

192.168.0.1 TCP_DENIED/403 1023 CONNECT ibankon.barclays.co.uk:443 - NONE/- -

I have tried to include the 403 in the SSL_ports line and restart, but no
diff seen. I dont understand what I need to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dave.

Basic config:
 192.168.0.1 Mandrake 8.0 Celeron 466 256MB
192.168.0.10 Mandrake 8.0 P120 160MB exports all home ares via NFS

Expanding on what Matt said, there are some applications or combinations
of circumstances in which v works, and others where only the
middle button works. In KDE, with Klipper running, I can use v in
many applications, but in console only the middle button works, and I
usually have to have the (mouse) cursor very close to where I want the
paste to occur.

Hope this helps,

Are you refering to true console mode where X isn't running at all? I can't
get the mouse to work in the console. I could with RedHat. Is this supported
in Mandrake?

Michael, did you install 8.0 before or after you bought the Voodoo? 8.0
finds
the Voodoo 3000 (is it AGP or PCI, btw?), and will automagically install 3d
acceleration. You did pick XFree 4.03 and hardware accel. when it asked,
right?

If you added the Voodoo after your 8.0 installation, you can still add
acceleration. Click the Mandrake Control Center icon from your desktop, then
pick "display", pick your settings, and use expert mode. That -should- set
your card up.

Hope this helps, and let us know! ;-)

That's what I tried first. Altho I know they're only tar.gz
wrappers around precompiled closed source secret binaries. Part of the
problem, besides having a kernel version that nVidia didn't use, is I
also have upgraded glibc, among other things, to newer versions.

The src.rpm's are nothin more than the same thing as the tarball's,
but are made to be more distro compatible than the tarballs.
The nvidia src.rpms rebuilt without a hitch and produced
 NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1512.i686.rpm and NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-1512.i686.rpm
both of which installed with no problem. I keep two versions of
XF86Config-4 in /et/X11. I switched to the one appropriate for the
nvidia drivers, checked it against nvidia's current README, and
restarted. X came up fine, but no 3d accel.

I didn't fool with it any further. I really don't like using
closed source binaries, and I don't need 3d accel with Linux. AND
since 2d is better and a touch faster with the Linux developed open
source drivers, I switched XF86Config-4 back to the open source version.

I wasn't surprised by any of this, I didn't expect nvidia's closed
source drivers to run properly on anything but a system similar (ie,
kernel, gcc, glibc, etc) than what nVidia used to make 'em. I just
tried 'em out'a curiosity. I was surprised that nVidia used a 2.4.3
kernel, since 8.0's had a MandrakeUpdate for security and bug fix
reasons to 2.4.7 for some time now.

[newbie] MDK 8.0 and IBM ThinkPad T21

2001-09-06 Thread González

I instaled MDK 8.0 on an IBM ThinkPad
T21 and every thing works properly
with an exception, the mouse. I tryed to
activated the PS2 device
(dev/psaux) using the MAKEDEV and mknod
programs, without results of any
kind. When i did a "cat" over
the device it answer me "the
device don't exist".

Somebody have an idea of how make it
works?

Thanks...

Title: Message

is your USB
daemon up ?
test is with
'modprobe usb'
anyway, if
it doesn't run (as root ): '/etc/init.d/rc.d/usb start'
this will
start your usb, then you'll have to look for some driver for your
cam
If you has
an SmartMedia or something, like mine - Toshiba PDR-M5, then
it's very
simple, you just mount the smartmedia to /mnt/camera, and access it

like any
other regular directory ...

Hope I
helped ...

[newbie] SiS 630 on Notebooks

2001-09-06 Thread civileme

8.0 Video will work

First install and let the recommended configuration be made for the SiS.

Next, go to console and login as root (select NOT to have X start at boot)

from a console use your favorite editor to edit

/etc/lilo.conf

add the line or change the vga line for the linux boot to

vga=791

remove the lines for linux-nonfb booting

save & quit

when the root prompt comes back up

# lilo

#
then reboot

Once you are in console, startx will get you to X and you can use Mandrake
Control Center to modify how you boot. Some folks are happy to boot to
console all the time and then modify various fikles to choose the
WindowManager they use, and several seem to like the Xtart rpm in cooker.

Alex, have you tried logging into Gnome. You may find that logging into
Gnome will actually log into KDE - that's what happened when I upgraded to
KDE2.2.

Try that first, if that doesn't work then you can edit /etc/x11/prefdm
making kdm your preferred desktop manager:

preferred=kdm
#if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/desktop ]; then
#       . /etc/sysconfig/desktop >/dev/null 2>&1
#       [ -n "$DISPLAYMANAGER" ] && DESKTOP=$DISPLAYMANAGER
#       if [ "$DESKTOP" = GNOME -o "$DESKTOP" = Gnome ]; then
#               preferred=gdm
#       elif [ "$DESKTOP" = "KDE" -o "$DESKTOP" = "KDE1" -o "$DESKTOP" =
"KDE2"
]; then
#               preferred=/usr/bin/kdm
#       elif [ "$DESKTOP" = AnotherLevel ] ; then
#                preferred=/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm
#       fi
#fi

Good luck.

[newbie] Switching to KDE 22 usual look and feel

2001-09-06 Thread Alex K

Hello,

I finally installed KDE 22 on my LM8 box.
Unfortunately
I got a problem. Each time I am starting the system
the login manager is displaying a list with only two
windows managers:

One is 'Default' which in my system is Ximian Gnome
and another one is KDE 22. The point is when I log on
using KDE 22 the windows manager is ICE.

I don't like this windows manager at all. It looks
very primitive and I would like to use KDE 22's normal
(usual) configuration of the desktop. Clean KDE 22.

Can someone give me a hint which file should I modify
in order to disable this windows manager and enable
the standard KDE 22 look and feel ?

Thanks a lot,
Alex

This happens to me all the time, but I am finnaly going to put the
question
to you guys no matter how embarassing it is.

When I'm using bash, I sometimes hit the ' (comma) key instead of
enter and
then get brought into a loop I can't get out of. I imagine this is
some sort
of feature that would allow you to enter extra long command
sequences but the
key does not activate the command, nor can I find anyway to
get out
of the loop. (or shall i say in the loop because I don't have a
clue
All i get is the > charactor no matter what monkey
business I try
with the key bored.

RE: [newbie] Kernel Make Commands

2001-09-06 Thread FLYNN, Steve

Bill,

I think maybe you have misunderstood what the make command actually
does.

I think you were attempting to roll your own kernel, and you were
calling 'make menuconfig' and suchlike, but with no luck. Probably getting a
"No rule to make menuconfig" or similar...

What 'make' actually does is read a file, usually called "makefile"
(note lowercase) which contains instructions on how to compile a particular
product. It specifies which compiler to use, what flags to pass to the
compiler, what the files to compile are, which files are dependent upon
other files and so forth. You could issue all of the these commands
yourself, but when you have, say, 3000 files to compile which all have to be
done together to cerate a fully linked kernel it's a major problem.
Makefiles were invented to take the tedium out of compiling large complex
programs like the linux kernel.

Anyway, make doesn't care what it's compiling, it just wants to know
HOW to compile it. Therefore, if you want to compile a new kernel, make must
be ale to see the makefile which defines the method of compiling that new
kernel. If you want to compile your own version of Konqueror, make must be
able to see the makefile which defines how to compile Konqueror and so on.

All you were doing wrong was telling make to make a target called
"menuconfig", but you weren't in the directory which contained the makefile
which defined HOW to build menuconfig.

In your post below you say that O'Reilly's "Running Linux" says the
subdirectory for make is something different. Do you mean that "Running
Linux" used a different directory than /usr/src/linux/ to compile a kernel
from?

Alex, thank you very much for your help. In fact, I was not sitting
in the correct directory as you politely pointed out in your note.

One point of confusion that I've had is how to reconcile differences
between distributions with regard to where pieces of the system are located.
I've have the O'Reilly Running Linux book which says that the subdirectory
for 'make' is something different; there are a lot of these distribution
differences that really get in the way of efficient learning. I've scouted
the on-line Mandrake documentation for a similar information about 'make',
but, if it is there, clearly I missed it and I apologize in advance for
doing so.

While I suppose the economics aren't yet with Mandrake, talking one
of the computer publishing houses into doing a Mandrake-Linux book [having
an author would be good too :-)] which points to these distribution
differences would be a really big help.

I really like the Mandrake product and approach to customers. I
hope that the company has a business plan that makes a profit for the
investors and keeps the company viable.

Bill

I assume that you mean the subdirectory for the linux source. I have the
second edition of that book and it has the source located in
/usr/src/linux

the man page for make is one of the worst that ther is, try the info page
type "info make" at a command line. O'Reilly also publishes a whole book
on make.

I have seen one book specifically for Mandrake, IIRC, it was one of those
"Learn xyzzy in 24 Hours" books (substitute xyzzy for the technology du
jour), and was aimed at newbies. I believe that it was for an older
Mandrake distro also, possibly 7.0. As for where things are located,
Mandrake is pretty close to RedHat, and very different from Suse, so take
a look at a RedHat book (of which there are plenty), and with Linux
Standard Base coming along, hopefully all distros will be looking in the
same places for the same things.

[newbie] "nice" command help needed

2001-09-06 Thread Andrei Raevsky

I understand the basic usage of the nice command. However, I did not find
any documentation on the possible uses of this command. For example, I
would like to find several examples of what can be achieved with this
command, what type of priority should or should not be given to any one
process, in what circumstances it makes sense to adapt the priority of a
process, etc.

ideally - I would like to find some e-book in pdf format discussing process
management under linux.

any help would be most welcome!

thanks

More specifically, you'll need a symlink in /etc/rc.d/rc[3-5].d/ .

The usual link for mysql in Mandrake is S90mysql which should be a link to
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql -- so you'll do 'ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql
S90mysql' from inside /etc/rc.d/rc3.d, /etc/rc.d/rc4.d, and /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
without the quotes.

Finally, you'll need to add two kill links (so that when it reboots or goes
into runlevel 1, it'll correctly stop mysql), so you'll do
'ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql K90mysql' from inside /etc/rc.d/rc1.d and
/etc/rc.d/rc6.d without the quotes.

Needless to say, you'll have to be root to do so.

Michael

Re: [newbie] Setting up for autorun

2001-09-06 Thread Incubus

I tried dragging the mysql.server file into the rc3.d directory and making
a link to it but it didn't autostart on the reboot. I also tried rc5.d to
no avail. I did notice that when i drug the file and linked like that, the
link is missing the S01, S02, etc. tags at the beginning of the actual link
like others in those directories. Is this something that Mandrake should
add? I'm unclear on that issue as I just got everything all honky-dory on
my machine with a brand new apache 1.3.20-php 4.0.6-mysql 3.23.41 install
and don't want to have to start over and recompile, etcblah, blah, blah.

Thanks again.
