Re: [newbie] Let's play a game!

2001-09-10 Thread Nathan Oliva

hey, try Unreal tournament, i just switched to linux, am running a linux
unreal tournament server... buy the game for windows retail about $20,
download linux binaries at lokigames... it rocked in windows, my server runs
unbelievably well under linux well enough that many of the game server
admins i know are jealous and finally considering at least dual booting to
linux.

have fun,

tannji

Hi, I'm looking for some games that will run under Mandrake 8.0. I
have a reasonably fast machine, with some kind of usable graphics card
and a fairly good soundcard. I'm looking for a 3D first-person
shooter game. Something like Counterstrike would be absolutely
perfect. Any sugestions? I would also take sugestions for Windows
games which are known to work well with wine. I don't have any access
to a Windows box, so if it can't run on Linux, I don't want it.

I have never really played computer games before, but I want to give
it a try now.

Thanks!

Re: [newbie] Let's play a game!

2001-09-10 Thread Robert MacLean

To get UT to work you need the windows version of the game.
Then go to http://www.lokigames.com/products/ut/ and download the
Linux installer.
Follow the instructions for the installer and voila.
I found that for some reason the game didn't run if I installed it off
the CD, or if I copied the files on to the hard drive under Linux.
What I ended up doing is copying the files under windows and then
installing off a fat 32 partition which worked fine. Other people I
know have been able to install straight off of CD. go figure :)

To Q3A to run you also need the windows version.
Then go to http://www.quake3arena.com/ and download the latest Linux
point release.
Install the point release (this had me confused for a while, the logic
of installing the update first then the game is weird), next go to the
q3a cd and find the pak0 file (if I remember right, it's the very big
pak file on the cd) and copy that into the base3q directory. and
voila, it's frag fest time ;)
This will works exactly the same for team arena, only difference is
that you need to copy the pak0 file off the team arena disk ;)

Personally I haven't found too much speed increase between windows and
Linux on my machine. Lower end machines Linux is faster, especially
with quake. I haven't had a chance to try it networked yet either,
will do that this weekend.

Re: [newbie] new linux drivers for nvidia cards Version: 1.0-1512

2001-09-10 Thread Robert MacLean

Matrox has some 3d capibilites (lack the advanced instructions the
others have), and there GPU is relatively good.
There biggest problem is there Duel Head System (this is also a
problem with the Geforce 2 MX cards, but can be switched off on them)
runs all the time and everything has to be sent to both outputs
(pointless if you have 1 monitor). This uses extra RAM,and GPUU
especially if the screen is "stretched" across the 2 monitors. This
causes the card to suffer a bit.
It performs about the same as a low end Geforce 1 in the end. The
Geforce 2 MX is better choice if you have to have deul head output.

Pretty much the only way to that I could find. It took me a while to figure
it out. I was trying to write scripts to change the gateway at dialup,
messing with the setting in kppp and linux conf before dialing and all of
that never worked. just the simple ifdown eth0 was the answer (I felt so
silly). :-)

Well, samba's pretty much the way to go if you want to file share with
windows machines. Here's the site I used, it's alot simpler (easier to
understand) than some of the howto out there.
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/csamba.html
There is also a little app called LinuxNeighborhood (or linneighborhood) that
is pretty cute. Search for it on sourceforge.net or google. It's similar to
network neighborhood, but you have to have samba configured first.

I loaded a different printer driver using spadmin. I browsed to etc/cups/ppd
and found a driver that seemed to match my printer. It seems to work. I'm
testing it now, but I forgot to change the resolution from the default 180 x
180 (or whatever). It's taking about 5 minutes to print the test page. I
did this before, and after changing to a properly supported resolution (360
or 720) it is printing quickly and beautifully.

Try changing your resolution to something higher. It might just work.

You might want to try looking for material on 'bootp', I seem to remember
that was the first incarnation of dhcp on Linux...

yes my main machine connects no prob,

both mandrake linux, and windows have no problem connecting to the net

okay the slackware that i am using is JUST A INSTALLER... nothing full
just three disks loaded into ram... the problem i have is trying to get a ip
address assigned to that machine.

and seeing as it didnt work on my main machine... i think it would be the
router, the nic card in both my machines work fine.

ill try a static config... hope it works, but im not thinking it will

Re: [newbie] Linksys router.

2001-09-10 Thread jennifer

Can you get connectivity to the internet with any machine or just the
slackware? You might want to go into the router config (software based) and
turn off DHCP and test a static IP config. If you get connectivity via a
static IP address then the problem is most likely not the router. The linksys
routhers i am familiar with will accept a DCHP assignment from your ISP via
the WAN link and and the LAN links stay seperate. Lan links can be DHCP or
Static and it has no affect on the WAN link to your ISP.

I don't have a PCTel modem, but I was trying to help another newbie find
an answer to his problem by showing him where he could get accurate and
up-to-date information. If I remember, he had been told (incorrectly)
that his modem would not work under Linux. If you follow the urrl that
was given in my earlier post, you will see that it is not a simple
procedure, but one that can be accomplished with care and diligence.

In the future, please reply to the newbie list rather than to persons on

I just downloaded Ximian GNOME and it seems to be pretty easy to use. I
don't like the term "user friendly," because that usually means limited
configuration. Ximian seems to be as simple or as complicated as you
want it to be. I took the option to download and install from the
internet and it took 9 hours, but the installer did everything, with
only a few questions. You can't beat that for making it easy for
newbies. Thanx once more to Sridhar for posting the info about Ximian.

Not correct. The WPA (Windows Product Activation) only sends a unique
code, dervived from your specific mix of hardware. Your name and address
is not sent to MS. It does not read "unique" serial numbers of your
hardware. There have been studies done, which have broken down the code
that Win XP sends out. Do a google search for the exact breakdown of
this combined code.

Ain't no need in all that. Here I'll repost it, and it includes the
instructions:

"You can download the program Xtart as well. There is an Xtart rpm at

http://perso.mandrakesoft.com/~civileme/

If you install that with

rpm -ivh Xtart-1.0-4mdk.i586.rpm

then thereafter when you type Xtart in console, it will give you a list of
window managers you can log to, and all you have to do is correctly type the
number.

Civileme"

There is also just the file called Xtart at that address, all you have to do
is type as root: cp Xtart /usr/bin/

or you could as root type: kdm (or gdm) and that will take you to a log in
screen from which you can choose different window managers. I would be glad
to tell you the individual commands for each window manager if I knew them.
But due to these aforementioned methods (and the fact that I prefer kde), I
never learned them. startgnome maybe, startsawfishprobably not... I
don't know 'em.

I had this same problem with my floppy drive and my CD-Rom drive. The
solution that worked for me was to delete the desktop icon that mandrake
supplied and create a new floppy device, then under the device tab I selected
my floppy device and it worked fine.

He may have configured X during install. I had the same problem with mandrake
8.0. For some reason x would just crash even though I configured it and it
picked up the right graphics card and monitor. I ended up just doing a
reinstall and after about 3 reinstalls it finally worked.
I have reinstalled since then and have not had that problem. Go figure.

[newbie] Trying to automate aumix

2001-09-10 Thread Robt. Miller

I'm trying to automatically set my volume where I want it in KDE when the system
comes up with the command..
aumix -L
..which works from a command line but it doesn't do anything in the rc.local file. Is
there some special syntax that
differs from the command line or am I putting it in the wrong place?

This might be a good time to download that file of Civileme's he mentioned in

Lanman,

I have not yet decided on a cable modem or DSL. I have heard pros and cons

I am gathering the necessary hardware and software to build an
infrastructure before I go online - what an idea, huh? :)

So, over the next few weeks I should be in a position put everything
together. I am sure I will have many questions as I progress.

Thanks,

My SO5.2 printer options does not include "raw Postscript". It only has
"Generic Printer". Is this what you recommend?
I have an HP870Cxi defined to CUPS and "Generic Printer" using xpp which
works ok. The test page prints very slowly (almost 2 minutes) on a printer
rated at 4 color pages per minute. The quality is fine but printing is very
slow.

okay, for the next part in this saga with my getting a webserver online...

1. how could i setup a ip address on the 486, using
the slackware disks (bare.i color.z network.dsk),
and without rebooting the machine?!

2. or... what is the slackware equal to dhcpcd cmd in mandrake to have the
machine talk to my dhcp server?

3. is there another disk i could use... that would have dhcp client utils on
it?

Remember in 8.0 3d for the Radeon is still experimental.

If you can hold out for 8.1 I think you will be quite pleased
with both your card and its performance with Mandrake.

I am using the 8.1 Beta3 and the Radeon now has full 3d hardware
acceleration and tuxracer runs flawlessly.
I think this is a combination of X 4.1.0, better drivers from ATI,
and updated DRI instructions.

I can't get rid of ppp0, this is automatically started by rp-pppoe. This
something like point to point over ethernet ?

I always use the browser for configuring the firewall box. But yes it's
very tempting to do just that.

> On your local machine, just make the default gateway 10.0.0.1
Was forgotten about that, thanks.

Having done all that, my connection still can't get thru.
While configuring with the secure connection (https://10.0.0.1:84433) a
test with the www.linux-mandrake.com icon still gets me nowhere - just
keeps waiting. Same thing when I'm not using the secure interface.
I noticed that the certificate was outdated, something like the 18 of
January. Hope this is not the problem.

I see a lot of things like the following in var/log/messages
/usr/bin/sudo: httpd-na : TTY=unknown ; PWD=/var/www-naat/html/en/admin
; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/share/naat/scripts/pingtest.sh

BTW naat-backend was updated.

I can also add that the route tabel and ifconfig output look the same on
my local box (on this very moment), except for the eth1 interface
ofcourse, wich is my physical connection to the internet.

I realy appreciate some help on this.
I've captured the output for route and ifconfig in the hope that this
helps. I'am sorry but the formatting went down the drain when copy/pasting.

Has anyone a similar experience or a trick to succede?

PS Under Redhat 7.1 it works fine, so i presume the problem
can be related to the kernel or to Mandrake hardware detection!

KDE needs a pretty peppy machine to run well.

I'm not sure about the error. But if you're interested in a window manager
that doesn't use too many resources, try iceWM or blackbox. Both are quite
basic. IceWM has somewhat of a resemblance to windows/KDE, while blackbox is
super simple.

IMO, neither iceWM or blackbox serve well as environments you'd use
constantly in linux. On my laptop I run in console mode most of the time and
head over to iceWM just when I need to run netscape or something.

In your menu should be cdplayer (under multimedia > sound) which is a basic
player, and there is xmms which is a kinda neato app with equalizer,
playlist, plugins and changeable skins. Both are standard and should be
installed, but if not search your software manager.

Re: [newbie] Uninstalling Mandrake 8.0 & install on small machine

2001-09-10 Thread Mr Cripps

Thanks Matt - sounds fine to me, although scary. I guess I'm just going to
have to go ahead and install.

I did try and install on a smaller machine (as a pre-test) that I managed to
salvage from work - 500m hard drive, AMD200 processor, 49MB ram, - which was
going to be a dedicated LINUX machine

However, KDE installed fine, but was terribly slow (unworkable). I tried
installing Gnome, as I'd heard that it was a lot less needy of resources,
but I've always got an error. There was an error with the file''. - could
this be a problem with the CD that I bought?

Matt and original poster,

In a single word--no.

Actually, you won't be able to remove the ext2 partitions with windows
fdisk--what you've done if you clear the mbr first is provide yourself no
way to get into linux (other than via a boot disk) to remove the ext2
partition information. What needs to happen is boot using something
similar to tom's root / boot disk (link should be off the "distribution
page" of linux.org) or into your linux install, run linux fdisk as root,
remove all ext2 partitions. Boot into windows, run 'fdisk /mbr' (note,
this is windows fdisk), reboot using the floppy, and repartition the drive
using windows fdisk, setting up partitions for a FAT16 or FAT32 partition -
if it is a large drive, choose FAT32 (FAT16 has a limit of 2 GB per
partition), then format.

This is, of course, the same set of instructions that have been sent to the
list countless times either by civilme or myself or others for that matter.

When you install mandrake, it will replace window's MBR with lilo. Lilo will
allow you to choose whether you want to run windows or linux at boot.

When removing mandrake, one thing you'd need to do is restore your windows
mbr. The mbr is the master boot record, which is what the system looks to in
order to load an OS when the system is booting. To restore your windows mbr,
type in a DOS window:

fdisk /MBR

Now, to kill of mandrake, just run fdisk from a DOS prompt, and reclaim the
partition as fat32 (or fat16, whichever you're using). When rebooting
Windows should recognize the partition, when you try to access the drive
Windows will say it needs to be reformatted. Just reformat it as Windows
directs and the drive will be back to what it originally was (sans any files
it had on it).

[newbie] Uninstalling Mandrake 8.0

2001-09-10 Thread Mr Cripps

I'm looking to install Mandrake 8.0 as a dual boot system. I've got 2 hard
drives -one which is 1Gb - which has Windows98 on it and is currently
called C: and another 6Gb one which has been partitioned up into 2Gb
partitions (so that my old Win95 could use it). This HD has partitions D: E:
and F: - I'm planning to install on F:.

Here's my main question - if I install on F: and the disk is reformatted by
Linux, how will I get Windows to eventually claim it back? Will it be easy,
or am I committed? Will Win still recognise the HD as F:?

Any help appreciated - I'm trying to wean myself off Microsoft and this is
one of my first steps.

Thanks in advance.

You can download the program Xtart as well. There is an Xtart rpm at

http://perso.mandrakesoft.com/~civileme/

If you install that with

rpm -ivh Xtart-1.0-4mdk.i586.rpm

then thereafter when you type Xtart in console, it will give you a list of
window managers you can log to, and all you have to do is correctly type the
number.

Do you haev the kernel source code loaded? Often there are includes in
/usr/include/linux and /usr/include/asm that symlink to /usr/src/linux/
include, and if so, you'll need the kernel source - or at least the
kernel headers installed.

Can't help with your Nvidia problems, but as far as eterm goes, you can do a
(or ) to temporarily change the font size (and eterms
screen size). Do a "man eterm" and you can learn more about the configuration
file, there are a kazillion (I kid u not!) things you can do with eterm,
including esoteric things like letting the desktop shine thru the eterm screen
(some kind of translucency mode). Hope this helps!

[newbie] 8.1b3 upgrade and Remote SMB printer invocations

2001-09-10 Thread Rick Commo

Just put 8.1/b3 up.

Did an upgrade to 8.1b2 and things appeared to go smoothly except when it
was time to reboot it hung (running a Duron on an Asus A7V133 mb with 12MB).
Waited over 10 minutes at the same screen and didn't see any disk activity
so I reset the machine. The next boot brought me to a "maintenance" login
to fix disk problems so it looks like it hung with an outstanding "sync" in
the queue. So I ran fsck and just said yes to every "Fix it?" prompt.
We'll see what if anything comes back to haunt me.

My Canon BJC4300, direct connected to LPT, seems to have died. It didn't
work under 8.1b2 or Debian. It had been working under Debian and SUSe 7.1.

So I tried to connect to either/both the HP855C or Lexmark Z22 served out by
my WIn2K box. No amount of playing games with the printer set-up wizard
would allow me to print. This leads to a question. Should the SMB server
name have been entered in the form of "server_name" or "\\server_name" or
"//server_name"? Similarly should the printer share be "share_name",
"\share_name" or "/share_name"? I tried connecting with both
"Administrator" and another local user name. Nothing seems to work. When I
tried printing the test pages I could see the briefest bit of activity on
network - the LEDs on the Netgear switch would blink once or twice.

I was somewhat surprised that the package manager ran out to CD1 (which just
happened to be in the drive) and brought a package - CUPS I think. When I
thought about it for a second it made complete sense since I had skipped
printer installation as part of the upgrade.

Any hints greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
-rick

Re: [newbie] hostname: bash-2.05

2001-09-10 Thread Tim Holmes

I can't find the original email sent on this topic, but it says that the
hostname was replaced with the bash-2.05$. Are you simply referring to
the prompt? Or is the hostname actually saying it's bash-2.05$?

As for the request for a standard /etc/skel/.bashrc and
/etc/skel/.bash_profile, here's what I have. I have edited mine a bit
since I do have a few users that log on remotely to this machine.

==
[root@r2d2 skel]# less .bashrc

# .bashrc

# Source global definitions
if [ -r /etc/bashrc ]; then
. /etc/bashrc
fi
[root@r2d2 skel]# less .bash_profile
# .bash_profile

# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
USERNAME=`id -nu`
USERID=`id -nu`

export PATH USERNAME USERID BASH_ENV=$HOME/.bashrc
==

On some of my machines I actually have a simple /etc/skel/.aliases and I
add a line in /etc/skel/.bash_profile that reads:

souce $HOME/.aliases

I'm pretty sure I just misunderstood what you were talking about with
the bash-2.05$ for a hostname, but if that's the case, edit
/etc/sysconfig/network to have all your correct information.

Hope that comes in handy.

RE: [newbie] Linksys router.

2001-09-10 Thread Mark Johnson

hmm... all I can tell you is first make sure that the machine is setup for
DHCP. If it is, then remove the router from between the machine and the
internet and see if you can get an ip address that way.

If all else fails give the machine an ip address and tell it were the router
is that hopefully should work... I've had really screwy problems with
individual machines. For example, I had originally install a netgear card
and for some bizarre reason would not get an ip address from my linksys
router, I pulled my linksys card out of my other machine and tried it in the
linux machine and it worked great. So I borrowed a 3com card and tried that
and it worked great too... I don't get why the netgear card was giving me
such a hard time.

u'r right jay.
what might be helpful is if someone could mail me a fairly standard
/etc/bashrc , bashprofile and /home/.bashrc, to see what it looks like and
does.

I would like to learn, how to install Advanced Extranet Server (1.3.19 or 1.3.20) with
Frontpage2000 support (mod_frontpage and FrontPage2000 server extensions). Or where I
could read about this ? Thank you.

I wish I had read the other answers before sending that last one. Sorry :o(

I will be installing LM8.0 on two PCs as soon as I finish downloading
it. I know I need to get more RAM, but how much is enough?

Box 1 is a Celeron 366 MHz with 32 MB, box 2 is a K5 100 MHz with 16 MB.
Both will be used for public Internet access: IceWM, Konqueror and/or
Netscape, KOffice and/or StarOffice, a messenger program... and no doubt
a whole bunch of other stuff I don't even know about yet.

Thanks,
Warren

Sorry about the lateness of this post, but £30 buys you 256Mb of SDRAM and
even DDR! Whats the problem? Unless of course you're after some older memory
type!

Yeah, I hear ya'. That's what I been doing. Just have to put up with the
quirks and hassles every new version I guess. Small price to pay I guess for
using linux.
