[newbie] Going nomail

[newbie] cups
U. I am starting to think that cups is pretty crummy. I changed the printer driver to see if this would affect the page margins (since I had no problems with the postscript driver before) The printer is now simply spilling out blank pages, even though the job has since been deleted and the printer has been stopped. Everything on my pc says the printer is inactive, if it weren't for the printer spitting out paper I would believe them. What is the point of having a print manager that does not manage the printer?? Any help appreciated. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] printing
Hi all. Im having trouble with my printer. (again) Its now working but the left margin is too small, cutting of the first letter of every line. CUPS has no way to change this and the printer icon on the desktop (I am using lm 7.2) has a margin that appears to make no difference to the actual printed page. thx Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Disconnect every 24 hours
Normally logrotate drops all the services temporarily to archive and recreate the log files. This issues an IF-DOWN and IF-UP command to your network devices, disconnecting you from your ISP. Check to see what time it happens. I'll bet it occurs between 4:00am and 4:30am every day. You could prevent logrotate from running, but you'll then need to manage your logs manually. -JMS |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Admin |Sent: Saturday, September 29, 2001 9:28 PM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: [newbie] Disconnect every 24 hours | | |Hello: | |I have a peculiar problem. Also I have bought the 3cd sets and the last two times the Powerpack and I will take the power pack any day. Thanks... Fetchmail by itself will not, fetchmail + pop3 or imap will. Fetchmail is a client that connects to an e-mail server -- to the best of my knowledge, it will not forward such messages to your outlook express client. The basic setup would be to create a user for e-mail. In that users crontab, you'd add a line to call fetchmail to check for new e-mail every x minutes (where x is how often you want it to check for e-mail on the remote e-mail system). The next step would be to enable the pop3 or imap server for your linux server, such that outlook express can connect, and download new messages on a regular basis. Make sure that you turn off HTML e-mail in Outlook Express (I seem to remember that it is enabled by default) and that it is not set to delete e-mail from the server. Depending on how much security you want in place for this, you can also enable ipchains (or iptables depending on kernel / distribution versions), adding a rule to only allow pop3 (or imap, depending on which one you choose) access from the IP of the Win98 box. This will prevent anyone outside your LAN from connecting (or attempting to connect) to the pop3 / imap server on your linux box. I'm sorry that I'm being so general on this post, but without knowing the specifics (ie, kernel version, distribution version, and so forth), I can't give you much detail. [newbie] mouse stops pointing correctly
Hi all, I recently built a computer with a K6-2 500 Mhz processor, MVP4 chipset, shared memory graphics, chipset-integrated AGP, LM 8.0, and a weird persistant but infrequent mouse problem. Basically, the mouse stops pointing to the correct spot on the screen. What I mean is, when moved to a button, the mouse pointer hovers over the button, you click the mouse button, but the effect of the click is about an inch to the left in the x-axis. y-axis is ok. OK, the integrated AGP is one possible culprit. How do I determine what level of support Mandrake has for these integrated AGP graphics? What parameters might I try to change to eliminate the mouse problem? Is driving voltage tunable somewhere? I think power supply might be another possible culprit. Installing the K6 eliminated weird x-windows behaviour during boot-up, where the pixels appeared to scatter a bit, and fonts were fuzzy. I think the 145 W power supply may have been marginal for the P200 installed then, operating at 3.3 V. The K6 works at 2.2 V, and the problem is gone. The infrequent mouse-drunkeness persists though. Suggestions? TIA, Ben Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] LimeWare Install issue
I finally got it installed and working, but a tip to everybody real quick. Make sure, if you're running the script as a user, that you have the correct permissions on the directory that you chose to house the downloads. Running it as root, I had no problem, I downloaded two songs I was looking for, then I quit out of it. I then tried to see if I could run it as a user, since it didn't really install the app at all, and it would just say, can't download. It then hit me, the folder that it was putting the files, was NOT accessable by the user. So I could run it, but I couldn't actually download anything. So keep that in mind! Make sure, if you're not running it at as root, and you never should run that as root, that you have the correct permissions on the download folders. tdh -- T. Re: [newbie] fetchmail
Fetchmail does exactly what it the name implies. Nothing more. It fetches mail, from a remote server, and puts it on the local machine. From there you can do anything you want with it. What you can do is, set up the Linux box to download mail vial fetchmail, and put the mail in $MAIL for each user. From there, you can set up Outlook Express to download mail from your Linux box. I did this for a while, before I got my cable connection. I had one Windows machine, that was not on the Internet, and one Mandrake 7.2 machine that was on a DialUp connection. I'd download mail to the Linux box over the modem, and via the network, I'd send mail out from my Linux box, and get the email my Linux box would download. But fetchmail on a Linux box, will just put the mail in Outlook Express' mail folders, you'll still have to download the mail, even if it just from a server on your local network. tdh -- T.
