There is a tiny firewall built into the Mandrake Control Center. Bastille is an interactive tool which teaches you about security as you bring it up, but it can cut off your printing (port 631), so be careful. iptables is a system for interpreting firewall rules. It is _stateful_ unlike its predecessor ipchains. This means that if a packet comes in looking like a response to a querry, the stateful rule will check to see if a query was indeed sent to that address. If not, then the packet gets bounced or dropped. If you want a log of activity, then portsentry is an OK tool to use. With Nimda and CodeRed all over the internet, make sure you have /var set up as a large partition by itself to handle the load of messages you will store. [newbie] iptables
Hello: Toda my linux box would act as the internet gateway to the lan. In the process, I found out mandrake also installed iptables. I now understand a firewall must be installed for masquerading, don't know why, but it has to. Now, I have been trying to figure out how to use iptables and I am truly confused. What in the world is a chain? I read the man file and the how-to, but either I am being a bit dense, or the subject matter is difficult. I have used firewalls in windows, specifically, conseal, but I am in need of help. I found a script called iptables in my etc/init.d directory. Is this script suppose to be moved to the etc/sysconfig directory? I have read from this list, about a program called bastille. Would bastille be an easier program to use and would I have to remove iptables before installing bastille? If so, how do you go about removing iptables without affecting your masquerade? In a way iptables seems to be what I am looking for, which is a firewall executed from the terminal mode, but I would also like to have the ability of "seeing" who/what is probing my system. Does iptables has this ability? Thanks in advance. Regards, Dexter Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

This isn't quite as bad as it looks, IMHO. I don't believe that Tim Berners-Lee would lend his name to something repressive. His stated vision has always been for a free and open WWW. I think that the W3C is simply waking up to the disturbing reality that just about anything can be patented in the USA. It will become increasingly difficult in the future for the W3C to create their own standards without accidentally stepping on the toes of some spurious patent. Their RAND licensing seeks to address this. The first time I installed a Linux distribution (SUSE 6.0) I asked for help in its list. Most of the answers were "read man something", "read howto something", and more than once somebody laughted at my ignorance related to unix enviroment. The result was that I get rid of SUSE installation. I know that for Linux gurus a lot of things are more than obvious, but for the newcomers Linux documentation is rather like a maze, since for understanding a doc, you always have to read something else. So when the only answer is "read this or that" or "you'd better buy a real modem" they don't help at all. Specially when you live in South America and the hardware is not as available and cheap as in USA or Europe. I've been in this mailing list for a while, but I didn't dare to post anything until knowing a little about the idiosyncrasy of the list. Anyway, I have no right to critisize anybody and I have to say that, from my point of view, the great majority is very helpful in the list. Even though I couldn't put my modem SM56 on line yet ;-) And I wanted to say that Mandrake 8.0 is the most user friendly Linux distribution I have ever seen, too! [newbie] Starting Ximian Gnome from Login Manager
Hello, I installed KDE 221 on my LM8 box. After installing I got some problems in accessing the Ximian Gnome. In fact after the initial install the menu options on login manager were: 1. default --> Ximian Gnome 2. KDE 22 3. Failsafe I wanted to rename "default" to Gnome but couldn't be done. So I delete it, then I added it under the name of Gnome using login manager. The issue is that the new Gnome session is pointing always to ICE WM. Meantime I solved the problem regarding the access of KDE 221 from login manager by setting the prefered manager to KDE. But I still can't make the login manager to start the Ximian Gnome. I am wondering which files I must modify in order for login manager to start the Gnome session. Maybe someone can give me a hint, I will apreciate. I want to thank to Civileme for his help. [newbie] CD Sound
Hi All, Well, I spend 2 days off and on downloading 8.1, but I got it and it installed almost flawlessly. Except for a problem that has plagued me since I bought my PC. I have a BlasterPC from Empac, and it uses a motherboard pretty much designed by Creative Labs. My DVD drive that is in my box (my CDRW is USB external) has the audio cable running through the digital port instead of the analog due to the fact this board is based off of having the SoundBlaster Live 5.1 Platinum integrated into it. When I try to play music CD's under Mandrake using CD Player, it recognizes the CD drive and it recognizes the fact there is an audio cd in the drive, but no matter how I set the mixers throughout KDE, I still get no sound. Any ideas on what I can do to make mandrake be able to play digital audio, or do I have to hook up the analog cable as well. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. [newbie] Nimda Related question again.
Hi!... What I've got is this. I'm got a machine running "Samba" on a Windoze Network. There are a few Windoze machien who have mapped the share on the Linux box. Ive now had a few ("*.eml) files appearing on those shares in the Linux box. I've been clearing them out a few times a day, no problem. No all steps have been taken to make sure all machine are properly virus protected, what I want to know is..is there a log file on the LNX box which will state which machine (either IP or NB-Name) wrote these files to the share?... Re: [newbie] GUI Pls.help!
If you're hesitant to edit /etc/inittab, you can, while in KDE or Gnome, run the Mandrake Control Center (should be on an icon on the desktop). From their, select Boot Config (under Boot) and uncheck the box that says "Launch the X-Windows system at start." Doing so will have Mandrake make the change to the /etc/inittab for you. If you are just needing to go to the command line while in one of the GUIs, you could just open up a terminal window under Terminals on the menu. There are several to choose from. When through, type exit, to close the terminal or shell. I think overall it is a great improvment. I'm having some Kmail and password problems but that is just a small problem. I think the thing I like the most about it is the fact that it comes with htmldoc. I used this program for my .pdf creations up till the 8.0 version when I had problems getting the FLTK installed. Edit (as root) the following file: /etc/inittab. Replace the line id:5:initdefault with id:3:initdefault Next time you boot, you will only get to command prompt and X-Windows will not start. I hope this helps. I experienced strange problems when I upgraded to a K6-2 450. Most the time it wouln't even boot. Turned out the old 250W PS developed -5V @ .25A. A new 250W PS pumped out -5V @ .5A. RE: [newbie] Dual Boot with XP?
I don't really understand microsofts thinking on that one.. Since we know that unix and linux (mostly unix) hold a large portion of the high end server market, wouldn't it make sense for M$ to make ntfs read and writable by unix/linux? seems that there would be alot of sysadmins who have server farms of unix machines who would not let the bean counters try XP or 2000 on servers (not that they should anyway...) The pain that non readable/writable would cause for things like unified backup and stuff would be a complete pain in the ass... dumb decision that one,, then again, who can honestly say that they are surprised... If someone asked M$ why, they'd say that the recommended method involves bining the unix, installing 2000 or XP on everything, get 50 extra servers to do the same work as the unix systems and use M$ Task scheduler to schedule reboots every 5 hours under load... (or not under load, much the same with M$ on servers...) (I know cos we have a couple,,, I loaded a software firewall on one of ours, just for some extra piece of mind, (its also behind other firewalls) and the 2000 machine core dumps on a regular basis, when the firewall is loaded, yet the same firewall runs perfectly on win2000pro. its almost like win2000 server doesnt want protection.. ) The firewall was Tiny Firewall for anyones interest... I put it on more for the checksom on files more then the firewall itself but I can't use either without a core dump... bloody Winblows!!! just my rambling for the evening... :-) rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of civileme Sent: Sunday, 30 September 2001 11:47 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Dave Sherman Subject: Re: [newbie] Dual Boot with XP? Is it possible to use a win98 floppy to partition the disk to the partition you want XP to use and then load XP and mandrake after that??? that should work shouldn't it?? rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of civileme Sent: Sunday, 30 September 2001 11:42 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Charles A Edwards Subject: Re: Fw: Re: [newbie] Dual Boot with XP? If they have installed with FAT32 filesystem, then there is _NO_ problem at all, Mandrake will make room for itself and install without disturbing XP. XP is not difficult to install, but the manufacturer may supply you only with a system restore disk which will simply put XP the way the manufacturer wanted it right ion your disk taking up all the space with an NT Filesystem that linux cannot read because it is a Microsoft trade secret. There is no particular advantage to XP, and like all win systems, it is suicidal to operate it connected to the internet. My tests showed it was smooth enough, and would cooperate well with mandrake's bootloaders if it was either NTFS and installed on only part of the disk or FAT32 and installed on all or part of the disk. COSMOS engineering supplies hard disks with linux preinstalled, and I think it is pretty much to order as to what system you have. That may be the necessary workaround if you buy a cheap, mass-produced system with a "System Restoration" CD. Much the same statements apply to Win2K which also has an unreadable filesystem that is probably "illegal" to reverse engineer. Civileme Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Dual Boot with XP?
windows2000 and presumably XP can handle Fat32, I know that for a fact as my entire drive on my win2000 pro laptop is running on Fat32... (great for testing CGI applications as you never have to worry about permissions..) Diskdrake will not resize your NTFS partition, since that requires writing to it, and as far as I know, linux can't do that reliable as of yet.. you are better off to remove the default XP and reinstall it yourself.. and set the partitions that you want before mandrake makes an apprearance.. rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Dave Sherman Sent: Sunday, 30 September 2001 9:59 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Dual Boot with XP? -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On Sunday 30 September 2001 08:11 am, Doug Anderson wrote: > Does the Linux utility that creates the partitions when LM is installed > over an existing Windows partition care what is in the Windows > partition? To answer your question, DiskDrake (the partitioning utility) should have no trouble working with your Windows hard drive, as long as the existing filesystem is FAT16 or FAT32 (DOS- and Win9x-formatted). If you get a system with WinXP preinstalled, it may have the NTFS filesystem ("NT-formatted", since XP is based on Windows NT/2000), and I don't know if DiskDrake can play with NTFS. I know in the past Dell has offered NT workstations and servers with FAT16 partitions as an option (usually, C is FAT16 and is only used for the OS, and D is NTFS, used for data and applications), so you may be able to get your XP system setup the same way. I don't know if Gateway will do this. Last time I checked, NT4 could not handle FAT32 partitions, thus the FAT16 option offered by Dell. I don't know if Win2000/WinXP has been improved to handle FAT32. Even if DiskDrake *is* able to work with your NTFS partition to resize it, you may run into problems later because at this time, NTFS write support in the Linux kernel is experimental, and I think Mandrake is still only including read-only support for NTFS in their stock kernel. What this means is, you will be able to read from your NTFS partition, but not save files to it, when you are in Linux. Or, you can recompile your kernel with full read-write support for NTFS, however this is considered experimental, and you could actually damage your files by trying to write/save them to the NTFS partition. This is because most browsers are incapable of resuming downloads if the connection is broken. If you have spent the last 24 hours downloading a 650MB ISO over a dial-up and than have the connection break with only one meg to go, you will have to start _all_ over again. For most files, a download manager like Downloader for X is the most appropriate. For a _huge_ file like an ISO, rsync is the best way to go. Make sure you have the rsync and rcp packages installed, and then try the following line in a console: $ rsync -auv --stats --compress -P --exclude '/.*' carroll.cac.psu.edu::mandrake/iso/ .
