RE: [newbie] How do I protect my CDs?
One way some manufacturers use to protect cdroms, is to put errors on the CD.. They stamp all their CDroms so it doesn't matter to them, but if you use a burner on a PC (regardless of OS) it will report an error and won't burn it, or it will burn it, but will ignore the error. The software can then check to see if the errors are on the CD... if not its a copy and won't run. Playstation I did that, thats why you needed to add a chip to the playstation to use copied CD's... you are out of luck if you are burning CD's on a PC. rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Tuan Tran Sent: Monday, 29 October 2001 1:39 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [newbie] How do I protect my CDs? One of the greatest things about GNU/Linux is its configurability. For example, if KDE is too heavy, you should try something else, like GNOME, XFce, Enlightenment, IceWM, WindowMaker or Blackbox. GNOME can be quite fast if you turn of Nautilus, and it is even more configurable than KDE. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan I strongly believe that trying to be clever is detrimental to your health. -- Linus Torvalds Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Dear all, I have an "OldWorld" MAC: a Gray G3 with 64MB of RAM and a 266MHz CPU. Which Linux distribution would you suggest for transform my Mac in a dual boot Linux/Mac machine? [newbie] Mandrake-Linux 8.1 installation problem
Hi All People, I tried nearly 2 weeks but still could not solve the installation problem of Mandrake-Linux 8.1. Detail as follows : Configuration of the PC for Linux box CPU AMD K2 350 Hard Disk3.6G ATA-33 RAM 128 MB ISO Images were download to a Windows ME box with Anti-Virus and all protection programs closed. Burning software : Tried both Easy CD Creator 4.0 and 5.0 respectively Burning speed : Tried 2X, 4X and 8X respectively md5sum : matched (Remark : I have Mandrake-Linux 7.2 version also downloadrd the same Windows ME box and burnt with Easy Cd Creator 4.0 at 4X. The CDs thus burnt can be installed in the abovementioned Linux Box, running great without problem) Installation went through without problem but the PS/2 mouse died after re-booting. It was alive at time of installation. KDE could be started after re-booting and worked normally. The mouse was found in HardDrake under the list. It is a A4 3-button wheel PS/2 mouse. But during installation I was not allowed to select another mouse, otherwise the PC would re-start automatically. During logout (Re-boot/Halt) the PC hanged with following warning ; /dev/pasux : no such device or address Mainloop returned consoleInit : nor such device or address INIT : no more process left in the runlevel Then the PC hanged. On terminal window Type ls -l /dev/misc It prompted .. total 0 crw - - - - - - rootamp_bios crw - r - - - - rootrootpsux crw - r - - - - rootrootrtc Any guy on the list has encountered the aforesaid problem previously please advise. Re: [newbie] The MSN.com access
That's a great idea. Blocking IE makes us just as bad as M$, but a little user education can go a long way. You should probably put a link in the warning to another site which explains _why_ using IE is bad. This keeps the actual warning small and readable (and less annoying as well). [newbie] Apache Proxy server problem + httpd error message

I know I ran Comanche and edited httpd.conf, but didn't modify anything. Now, whenever, I type "http://10.0.0.3:8080/"; in my browser, I get the following error message: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Apache/1.3.9 Server at linux.company.domain.mu Port 80 Furthermore, when running "httpd" in a terminal, I get the following message: Warning: NetMask not supplied with IP-Addr; guessing: 10.0.0.0/8 Here is an excerpt from "httpd.conf": ServerType standalone Port 80 ... Re: [newbie] Win Partition
If your errors are only on creating files, you are probably using the default settings in /etc/fstab, your windows partition is mounting with nosuid which means it shouldn't try to change the userid of any files it creates. Unfortunately, it appears to ignore this and tries to change the owner and errors. Even if you are in a group listed with access, it will still use your user id as the owner and generate the number.LM mounts it originally as root, so that is the owner. If you umount /mnt/windows and then mount /mnt/windows, it should work. You could also set it to not auto mount and then manually mount it. Hmmm much though I agree.. if only things where that simple unfortunately around 85% of web users use IE4 already and much though it pains me to say so (maintiaining a commercial site with around 2000 lines of javascript) I like a lot of developer have no option but to occainsionally write stuff especially for >IE4 (I am getting to a mozilla version but it aint ready yet) by simply commercial restraints. I suspect that the whole msn issue is something similar although I should imagine their reasons for not supporting the moz are somewhat different to ours (ie lack of programming resources) and rather more politically motivated. The KDEBase plugins work fine for me. You may want to launch Konq from a command line, Xterminal, so you can see what is actually happening to prevent it from launching. I've found that some window decorations seem to screw it up. Find out if the camera is connected and copy the files to a certain directory: --- #!/bin/bash if [ -d /mnt/fuji/dcim ]; then echo Transferring files cp -v /mnt/fuji/dcim/100_fuji/* ~/foto/camera else echo Camera not connected! fi --- Did look at the Linux Hardware Database (lhd.datapower.com)? The best way is use latex. Latex come with all the linux distributions, and if it is actually difficult to learn when you start, in a few days you will be very glad with it. Re: [newbie] Word processor
StarOffice 5.2 is a great piece of work. Its problems are bloat and the integrated desktop (although I've grown used to it over time). Other than that it is incredibly solid - I've written large documents on it over the period of a week (i.e. open the entire time) and it never crashed on me. OpenOffice.org (that's its official name, since somebody has already copyrighted "OpenOffice") is shaping up to be a fine successor to StarOffice 5.2. I've always preferred StarOffice to MS Word, and OpenOffice.org is even better. Release 638C has some stability problems, but otherwise it is almost complete. Most importantly, it is actually usable. RE: [newbie] The MSN.com access
well, a standard way of testing is is to use Javascript... document.all generally means IE document.layer generally means Netscape document.getElementByID usually means Mozilla, NS6.0-6.1 and all the most current browsers... I have written some rather large scripts in JS that do some pretty cool things... and often the way those things are done in IE, is different to NS4 is different to NS6/mozilla and so on.. So I test for the existance of the object I want to work with before I try, if it doesn't exist, I test for an alternative and go with that if it exists... and so on and so forth.. It depends how MS is blocking browsers, is it redirect via JS? is it redirecting via headers and the server? I am off the opinion that anyone running apache, should add a javascript to their page, that tests for IE and pops up an alert to this effect: "You are using Internet Explorer to view this site. Although this site should work fine, we cannot guarantee that you will not lose some functionality because of your choise of browser, Microsoft do not always follow standards with the internet and as such we can not know for sure if it will work or not..(and neither can anyone other then Microsoft themselves.) we suggest you download Mozilla (free) mozilla.org This is a more standards compliant browser then Internet Explorer. Pentium (something) with 64 MB ram. That's really not enough for Mandrake and KDE. Also, IMHO, Linux tends to be oversold at this point in time. Depending on your requirements, Linux might not be for you yet. I personally would rather see you back away from Linux now if it's not meeting your needs so that you are more ready to come back to Linux in the (near) future when it is ready to meet your needs. I'm going to look now for the other emails you sent about what you want to do in Linux. OK, here it is: "The box will primarily be running KDE (or GNOME if I get completely fed up with the latency of KDE), act as a light file server, and maybe an internet gateway. Nothing major." Running KDE (or GNOME) is major, you will not get satisfactory performance (IMHO) with less than 128 MB of RAM, and even so it will be slower than the same box with Windows 95 or 98 (I can't speak for more up-to-date versions of Windows). IE will be faster than Konqueror or Mozilla. I think mail (like KMail) will be compatible in speed. You mention running an internet gateway -- does that mean you have some other computers? If so, you might consider setting this box up as the internet gateway and file server (it will do a terrific job) and also serve as your learning box for Linux in general and KDE (or GNOME) in particular. Then keep one of your other computers running Windows for the tasks than Linux is not as good at (yet). I don't know what else you might intend to do under KDE or GNOME, I jumped to the conclusion that you want email and web browsing. If you want file editing and light duty word processing, you will find what you need in KDE (or AbiWord), and, I think, aside from loading times, the response will be adequate. StarOffice has almost as many capabilities as Word (AFAICT), but takes 1 to 2 minutes to load on my machine (~200 Mhz, 128 MB). Other than StarOffice, I don't think there is a word processor on Linux that has all the features of Word97 (for example), including styles, collapsible outlining, collaboration, etc., although a Linux advocate might suggest that some of those capabilities don't belong in a word processor but should be done external to it. Hope this helps, Randy Kramer If you do decide to set Linux aside temporarily, feel free to lurk on this list and occasionally ask for an update on the state of Linux. Unfortunately versions 5.1 and 5.2 were bloatware, taking hours to load and monopolising the CPU. The beta of 6.0 looks very good, though - they ditched the browser and email client and the integrated desktop, and went for KDE integration instead. Of course, being beta it crashes occasionally, but no more than MS Office does normaly, in my experience. Robin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Or do I need to set up some mirrors manually? Any update on that site is available to you. I am not aware of mirrors that carry security updates but not bug fixes. Seems to work for me so far :-) Note that Mandrake do not release new versions of packages unless there is a problem with the old ones. So for example there will be a new kernel next week to fix the supermount problem in 8.1 (DO NOT use upgrade on a kernel. There will be special instructions on how to do the kernel upgrade) As new versions of packages evolve they go onto cooker first for people to experiment with, and then when they are validated as good, they will be merged into 8.2 If you simply want the latest and greatest of packages, then you could add individual ftp sites or play with cooker. > > What about my CD-ROM sources, can I delete them, and wouldn't that be a > good idea, so I always update from the net? Yep Select Define sources > New Select Type of Source > Security Updates Update the list of mirrors. Pick one near you Click OK It takes quite a long time to get the list of all the packages on the mirror. Now any package you have installed for which an update is available will show up in bold in the search list. If you press the 'Mandrake Update' button you can now automatically update security fixes, normal updates, or bugfixes, by selecting the radio buttons. If the updates have other dependencies they will be installed as well. You can add any ftp site or Mandrake cooker using the same procedure. NOTE: Accepting any and all updates from cooker is risky. Re: [newbie] And more questions.!
I think the player you are referring to is mplayer 0.50 I went through that experience last week. The developers really DO NOT like gcc 2.96. They are not that keen on 3.01 either, but have now included it, and mplayer will compile with 3.01 now. MPlayer also requires glibc 2.2.4-8mdk which if you install it from Mandrake Software Manager requires gcc 2.96. So you have to force gcc 3.01 with glibc 2.2.4-8mdk Then it compiles OK You dont need any compiler switches. MPlayer was a tough one for me to get going. Trouble is the developers insist that RPM's are unlikely to work as it is so very dependent on individual machines. The manual on the mplayer site contains all this info. As for your path, add to the statement in .bash_profile Enjoy Derek On Sunday 28 October 2001 06:36, you wrote: > Well, i started installing one movie player after another, and > found that mplayer was the one i liked best. This is proof that Microsoft are deliberately targeting browser ID strings rather than testing for browser capabilities. Both Mozilla and Galeon use Gecko. This _should_ mean that both browsers are treated in the same way, but only Mozilla was blocked. This would be because Galeon has a different ID string, and MS isn't specifically targeting it. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan "So fix the stupid API. An ext2 partition can be mounted as ext3 to get journalling, and an ext3 partition can be mounted as ext2. Ensure that you have Mandrake's gcc3 and egcs packages installed. Then you need to change compilers before compiling anything. I'm assuming that you use bash for your shell (if you don't know what bash is, then you're most likely using it). To switch to egcs: $ export CC=egcs CXX=egcs++ To switch to GCC 3 (only in Mandrake 8.1, not 8.0): $ export CC=gcc-3.0.1 CXX=gcc-3.0.1 > and another question yet! i think this one is the most stupid. > I've noticed that some commands and binaries should be in my path, but > they are not. ... uhmmm.. how do i change my path settings?? http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/admin/ashell3.html#Path This is a great site. A better option, however, would be to adjust the mouse acceleration in GNOME itself. Running ./configure --help on the old gcc and finding out the directive for no gcc checking would have made things work well. Can you still go back to the old gcc, then this will work.
